Hyundai plans to launch SUV in India amid rising domestic competition ahead of IPO

Hyundai plans to launch SUV in India amid rising domestic competition ahead of IPO

The rollout of SUVs will begin early next year with the first India-made electric vehicle and at least two gasoline-powered models ready for market from 2026, three sources with knowledge of the company's plans said.

Hyundai's first listing outside South Korea, as well as its strategy to add higher-margin offerings, signal its positive outlook toward the world's third-largest car market, as its presence in China is shrinking and domestic sales are declining.

Hyundai's sales in India trail only Maruti Suzuki, though in a fast-changing competitive landscape, homegrown giants Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra have dented its market share with new SUVs that are now the top-selling vehicles, replacing the once-favourite small cars.

This has pulled down Hyundai's Indian market share to 14.6 per cent from 17.5 per cent four years ago, while Tata's share has nearly tripled to 14 per cent in the same period. Toyota, the next-largest foreign rival, has seen its share rise from four per cent to six per cent.

“Hyundai is in a difficult position,” said VG Ramakrishnan, managing partner at consultancy Avantiam. “Its primary focus should be on how to maintain its market share and the only way to do that is by introducing products rapidly.”

Hyundai did not respond to requests for comment on its plans in India.

'Lively Market'

India is the third-largest revenue-generating country for Hyundai after the US and South Korea, and the company has already invested $5 billion in the country, with a commitment to invest another $4 billion over the next decade.

“We are proud to consistently achieve the second largest market share in this vibrant market and will continue to lead Hyundai as a premium brand,” Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chairman Euisun Chung said during his visit to India in April.

Hyundai's launch of an India-made electric SUV in 2025 will be followed by the introduction of four more EVs by the end of the decade as it evaluates plans to make the country a regional EV export hub, three sources not authorised to speak to the media said.

Hyundai on Wednesday announced it will launch hybrid cars in India as part of a broader strategy to increase global sales to 30 percent by 2030, boosting its plan to sell higher-priced vehicles in the country to boost margins.

Its share of cars priced at least $18,000 – considered upmarket in India – is set to double to 15 per cent between 2021 and 2023, according to its draft IPO filed in June.

Hyundai, which plans to sell its 17.5 per cent stake in the Indian business to the public, said it will continue its “premiumisation” strategy that has helped it post the highest profit margins among peers in India, but the gains have come at the cost of volumes.

Ramakrishnan said the auto maker will have to maintain a good balance between market share and margins after its listing.

“If any of these deteriorates, shareholders may question the company,” he said.

Hyundai's sales in India were at an all-time high last fiscal year, despite its market share declining.

intense competition

Hyundai Motor had initial success in the Indian market due to affordable hatchbacks like the Santro, while the i10 and i20 models also continue to enjoy similar success.

Hyundai entered India in 1996 and its initial success in the country, which has been a graveyard for automakers such as Ford and General Motors, was due to affordable hatchbacks such as the Santro, which has now been discontinued.

As customer preferences changed, Hyundai launched its first locally produced SUV in 2015. The mid-sized Creta, priced between $13,000 and $24,000, was an instant success and became Hyundai's biggest grossing car.

Hyundai's 13-car portfolio now has eight SUVs, but its share of India's total 25 lakh SUV sales last fiscal declined to 19 per cent from 24 per cent three years ago, IPO documents show.

Of the two new gasoline-powered SUVs that Hyundai is planning for India, the first will be based on the Bayon crossover currently sold in global markets and will compete with Maruti's Frontx crossover and Tata's Nexon SUV, three sources said.

The second car will be bigger than the Hyundai Creta SUV and will compete with the Mahindra XUV700.

These two SUVs are expected to boost Hyundai's sales by around 120,000 units annually, a source said. Industry data shows the carmaker sold 615,000 cars in India, of which 63 per cent were SUVs and the rest hatchbacks and sedans. The company exported 163,000 vehicles in the last fiscal.

However, Hyundai's rivals aren't standing still.

Tata, India's top-selling EV maker with a market share of over 75 per cent, has said it plans to launch five EVs in the next three to four years, taking its total to 10.

Mahindra has said it will launch seven electric SUVs and six new gasoline-powered SUVs by the end of the decade. Market leader Maruti is doubling down on SUVs and hybrids and plans to launch six EVs by 2031.

“What has taken Hyundai this far will not necessarily take it into the future. Competition is even more intense,” said an Indian supplier of Hyundai.

Lotus slashes delivery targets due to tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles

Electric carmaker Lotus Technology Inc, owned by China's Geely, has slashed its annual delivery target by more than half because of the tariffs.

Electric carmaker Lotus Technology Inc., majority-owned by China's Geely, has slashed its annual delivery target by more than half amid tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles and weak demand.

The company, which listed in February after being spun off as the EV arm of the British sports car maker, said on Wednesday it now expects to deliver 12,000 vehicles this year, down from a previous target of 26,000.

Shares in Lotus Technology fell 4.3 percent in early trade in New York, having lost nearly half of their value since listing.

Also read: Chinese EV makers suffer setback in Europe as tariffs begin

The lower target comes after the U.S. and the European Union planned to impose tariffs on EVs imported from China, where Lotus Technology is based and makes some models. The EU, which has accused China of unfairly subsidizing carmakers, has raised the prospect of imposing tariffs as manufacturers such as BYD Co. have begun to enter Europe more aggressively with cheaper EVs.

The outlook cut is a blow to investors who backed the company when it listed in February. At the time, Lotus said its range of luxury EV models and an alliance with luxury goods giant LVMH would help it avoid the same struggles as rivals.

Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, the automotive empire of billionaire Li Shufu, rescued Lotus in 2017 after the carmaker suffered as consumers turned to SUVs. The company is building electric models priced between $80,000 and $150,000, including more SUVs.

The British sports car division is separate from the listed entity and is wholly owned by Geely.

Geely has faced similar problems with other brands it supports amid a broader slowdown in EV demand. Polestar has lost about 90 percent of its value since it was spun off from Volvo Car AB two years ago.

Geely also has stakes in Mercedes-Benz Group AG and Aston Martin Lagonda Global Holdings PLC.

Ola Electric's products including spare parts and electric vehicles will be available on the ONDC network, allowing customers to get spare parts directly through the open-source platform.

The Hyundai Creta EV is one of the most awaited electric cars in India and is expected to debut at the 2025 India Mobility Expo in January next year.

The Hyundai Creta EV is one of the most awaited electric cars in India, and is expected to make its debut at the India Mobility Expo in January next year. Hyundai has already introduced the Kona Electric and Ioniq 5 electric cars in India. However, the Kona Electric could not achieve the desired sales numbers, while the Ioniq 5, being a premium offering, also did not bring in much numbers for the automaker. In this situation, the Hyundai Creta EV could be a crowd puller for the South Korean auto major.

The Hyundai Creta has been one of the most successful SUVs ever since it was launched in India. The automaker aims to capitalise on this successful SUV by bringing the electric Creta. Since the automaker is currently working on the Creta EV, here are some key details of the upcoming electric SUV.

Hyundai Creta EV: Design and platform

The Hyundai Creta EV will be built on a modified version of the K2 architecture. Interestingly, the current ICE-powered Hyundai Creta is based on the K2 platform. Taking inspiration from the design philosophy of the Hyundai Kona Electric, it can be expected that the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV will share a wide range of design elements with its ICE sibling. However, it will also have a fair number of distinctive styling bits.

The Hyundai Creta EV will ditch the traditional front radiator grille in favour of a closed panel. There will be aero-alloy wheels to enhance aerodynamic efficiency, which plays a key role in ensuring optimum range for electric vehicles. Expect some distinctive EV-specific styling themes as well.

Hyundai Creta EV: Interior and Features

Given that Hyundai will position the Creta EV as an upmarket offering, the electric SUV will come with an interior that will carry the same vibe as the current ICE-propelled Creta. However, just like the exterior, it will have EV-specific styling features. The Hyundai Creta EV is expected to get a dual-screen setup combining a touchscreen infotainment system and instrument cluster. Other features will include a 360-degree surround view camera and a Level 2 ADAS suite.

Hyundai Creta EV: Powertrain

There is very little information about the powertrain and specifications of the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV at the moment. However, it is expected that the upcoming Creta EV will be available in two different battery pack options. Also, it will offer a range of up to 500 km on a single charge.

Launched in early August 2024, the Tata Curve EV is available with two battery pack options – a 45 kWh unit and a 55 kWh unit, promising a range of 502 km and 585 km, respectively. The Hyundai Creta EV is also expected to match these figures.

Appeals court revives Tesla's fight against Louisiana auto sales law

Appeals court revives Tesla's fight against Louisiana auto sales law

  • The Tesla lawsuit is part of a broader effort to circumvent laws in various states that prevent automakers from also being retailers.
The Tesla lawsuit is part of a broader effort to circumvent laws in various states that prevent automakers from also being retailers.

Tesla's challenge in federal court to a Louisiana law that bars automobile manufacturers from selling directly to consumers has been revived by an appeals court.

The lawsuit filed by the electric car company owned by billionaire Elon Musk is part of a broader effort to circumvent laws in several states that bar automakers from also being retailers. The effort has included court challenges and, in some cases, opening showrooms on sovereign Native American tribal properties where state laws don't apply.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in a 2-1 decision, overturned a lower court ruling that rejected Tesla's claim that it was being denied constitutional due process. The appeals court said Tesla had a reasonable claim that the Louisiana Motor Vehicle Commission, which regulates car sales in the state, was biased against Tesla, given that it is dominated by licensed third-party dealers.

“The Commission will always be incentivized to prevent new business models from entering the market,” Judge Jerry Smith wrote for the majority in a decision issued Monday.

The ruling sends the case back to federal District Court in New Orleans.

Smith was appointed to the court by former Republican President Ronald Reagan. Judge Katharina Haines, appointed by former Republican President George W. Bush, concurred with the outcome. Judge Dana Douglas, appointed by Democratic President Joe Biden, dissented.

“The Supreme Court has made clear that regulatory boards are not unconstitutional simply because they are composed of competitors of the entities they regulate,” Douglas wrote.

NASCAR upholds decision to cancel Austin Dillon's playoffs after win at Richmond

Austin Dillon's overly aggressive win at Richmond Raceway won't earn him a spot in the Cup Series playoffs.

A NASCAR appeals official on Monday upheld the sanctioning body's decision to revoke Dillon's automatic postseason berth, which came with his controversial win at Richmond on Aug. 11. Dillon intentionally spun out Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano exiting the final turn to take the checkered flag for his first win in two years.

Three days later, NASCAR declared that Dillon's win had “crossed a line.” Officials allowed Dillon to keep the trophy and prize money, but stripped him of his spot in the 16-driver playoff, saying his actions were “detrimental to stock car auto racing.”

Dillon and Richard Childress Racing were deducted 25 points in both the drivers' and owners' rankings. Dillon's spotter, Brandon Benesch, was suspended for three races because he yelled over the radio “Wreck him!” as the driver drove with Hamlin in the race.

RCR appealed, and National Motorsports Final Appeals Officer Bill Mullis said in his ruling Monday that the race data indicated “it is more likely than not that the rule was violated.”

The decision could cost RCR millions in losses, as NASCAR's charter system pays out based on final points standing.

However, Dillon has one final chance to reach the playoffs; he must win Sunday at Darlington Raceway to make the field.

According to NASCAR, Dillon's actions at Richmond went beyond the hard-racing ethos that has been part of the Cup Series' DNA since its inception in 1948. Dillon said he was trying to get around Logano's car but had a quick reaction to hit and turn Hamlin.

“I've seen Denny and Joey make moves that put people on the line to win,” Dillon said. “This was the first time in two years for me to get a win. I've seen a lot of things over the years in NASCAR where guys put people on the line, and that's just part of our sport.”

It was his first win at Daytona since Aug. 28, 2022. He had only two top-10 finishes this year. Dillon emerged from the chaos in his No. 3 Chevrolet and was met with fierce booing. That car number was often driven aggressively by Dale Earnhardt.

“This is not the way we want to end our races,” said Elton Sawyer, the competition's senior vice president. “This is not the way we want to decide a champion. This is not the way we want to decide an event.”

Maruti to focus on Tier II and III cities with new Nexa Studio

Maruti to focus on Tier II and III cities with new Nexa Studio

Maruti Suzuki says that 30 per cent of its total sales come from the Nexa channel and this is reason enough to take Nexa to customers in smaller towns.

,

Some of the more premium or exclusive models like the Jimny are offered by Maruti Suzuki under its Nexa retail channel.

Maruti Suzuki on Friday announced that it will open a network of Nexa Studio outlets in smaller Indian cities and towns that did not have Nexa retail outlets till now. While there are 500 Nexa retail outlets across the country since the first one was set up in 2015, Maruti Suzuki says the Nexa Studios will be smaller versions of these retail outlets that will still offer the same premium sales and service benefits to customers in tier II and III cities and towns.

Maruti Suzuki Nexa was set up in 2015 as an alternative retail outlet and currently co-exists with the Maruti Suzuki Arena sales channels. Slightly more premium or even niche vehicle offerings from the Maruti Suzuki camp – such as the Jimny, Grand Vitara, Invicto and even cars like the Frontex, Baleno, Ciaz and XL6 are offered under the Nexa umbrella, while models like the Vigor, Swift, Ertiga and Brezza are sold under the Arena brand.

Also read: Maruti Suzuki's Nexa sold more than 27 lakh cars in 9 years, Baleno is the best selling car

But while Arena outlets are widely spread, Maruti Suzuki says Nexa will now be closer to more potential customers and this is the driving factor behind setting up Nexa Studio.

What is Maruti Suzuki Nexa Studio and how is it different from Nexa?

The Nexa Studio outlets will essentially be two-car-display-showrooms, but will still offer the entire product portfolio that exists under the Nexa umbrella. Maruti Suzuki officials say that the vehicle buying experience at the Nexa Studio will be exactly the same as at a Nexa outlet. Moreover, just like a Nexa service centre, the Nexa Studio will also offer after-sales support and service assistance.

So, while Nexa outlets are so far located in the big cities of the country, Nexa Studios will be set up in smaller cities and towns to bring the Maruti Suzuki brand closer to customers. “As we reach closer to customers, their trust in us increases. So our aim is to provide a better Nexa experience to customers in smaller towns. Each Nexa Studio has the potential to sell 20 to 25 cars every month,” said Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer, marketing and sales, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL), during an interaction with members of the press.

Why is Nexa Studio important for Maruti Suzuki?

Banerjee highlights that about 30 per cent of Maruti Suzuki's sales in the country come from Nexa channels. And within the Nexa channel, about 37 per cent of sales come from tier II and III cities. “If we want these customers to visit our Nexa outlet, sometimes they have to travel 100 km. Now we will take Nexa closer to them. Our focus is on expanding our presence here (tier II and III cities and towns),” he said.

Maruti Suzuki has a wide presence across the Indian landscape and has the largest sales and after-sales network for any car manufacturer in the country.

The Reserve Bank on Thursday amended its e-mandate framework and allowed auto-replenishment of Fastag and National Common Mobility Card (NCMC). The existing e-mandate framework requires pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before the actual debit from the customer’s account.

In June, the RBI had announced that auto-replenishment of balance in FASTag and NCMC, which is recurring in nature but without any fixed periodicity, would be facilitated under the e-mandate framework.

“It has been decided to incorporate automatic replenishment of FASTag and NCMC whenever the balance falls below the limit set by the customer under the e-mandate framework,” RBI said in a circular.

It said that since payments for auto-replenishment are recurring in nature but do not have any fixed periodicity, they will be exempted from the requirement of pre-debit notification.

India-made Maruti Suzuki Fronx to get ADAS, AWD in Japan

India-made Maruti Suzuki Fronx to get ADAS, AWD in Japan

  • The Suzuki Fronx for Japan will feature several changes compared to the India-spec version, especially in terms of the equipment available on it.
The Japanese-spec Suzuki Frontx features more equipment than the India-spec model, including ADAS, AWD and revised interiors

Suzuki is preparing to introduce the new Fronx subcompact coupe SUV in Japan later this year and the model is being exported to its home market from India. In fact, the India-made Fronx is the second model developed by Maruti Suzuki after the Baleno to be exported to Japan. While the first batch of shipments of the Japan-spec Fronx was recently dispatched from Gujarat, more details have emerged about what will be different in the car compared to the Indian version.

Japanese-spec Fronx: what’s different?

The Suzuki Fronx for Japan will feature several changes over the India-spec version, especially in terms of equipment on offer. The model is being produced at Suzuki Motor Group’s facility in Sanand, Gujarat, and shares its underpinnings with the Baleno. While the model sold in India gets 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol and 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine options, the Japanese model will get a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.

The cabin of the Frontex in Japan will feature a dark grey and plum-themed colour scheme, while the Indian model features a plum and black theme

This is not surprising as there are no specific restrictions in Japan except for the kei segment. Moreover, Maruti Suzuki is already exporting the Fronx and its rebadged Toyota cousin (Starlet Cross) to South Africa with the same displacement engine.

However unlike the Indian version, which has only a front-wheel drive configuration, the Fronx for Japan will come with Suzuki’s AllGrip AWD technology for better traction. Most parts of Japan experience snowfall, which makes AWD an essential safety feature in such conditions. The AllGrip AWD system comes with multiple off-road modes including Auto, Sport, Snow and Lock. The rear suspension system on the Japanese Fronx has also been reworked with a rear torsion beam setup with a unique layout to accommodate the AWD system.

Additionally, the Japan-spec Fronx features a different interior with a dark brown and plum-themed layout. It is also a more plush cabin with soft-touch material on the door pads, and piano black finish on the door handles, steering wheel, and centre console. The seats are made of fabric and faux leather for a premium look.

One of the major differences in the Japanese Fronx will be the addition of Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), which will offer lane-keeping assist, auto emergency braking, front parking sensors, auto cruise control, heated seats, electronic parking brake with hill hold, and more.

Bookings for the new Suzuki Fronx have begun in Japan, while the launch will take place sometime next month. Deliveries will begin later this year.

Mahindra is working on a slew of new electric vehicles for the Indian market. The homegrown manufacturer showcased new concepts back in 2022 and is currently testing them on Indian roads. One of the five electric SUVs was the XUV.e9 which was spotted recently while it was charging at a Tata Motors dealership.

One of the first things that we can notice is that the charging port is located on the rear left-hand side. We have seen from the earlier spy shots that there is a plastic piece that covers the charging port. There is a C-shaped LED tail lamp that wraps around the charging port.

We also get a close look at the front-end design of the SUV Coupe. The LED headlamps are the same ones that are doing duty on the XUV.e8 so they are vertically stacked and have copper elements in them. There is also a slim air dam in the bumper for the airflow required for electrical components. There are also newly designed alloy wheels on the side with flush sitting door handles.

The Mahindra XUV.e9 will have dimensions of 4,790 mm in length, 1,905 mm in width, and a height of 1,690 mm. It will be based on the INGLO platform and feature a wheelbase of 2,775 mm. The XUV.e9 does look rather imposing and dominating because of its size which will be larger than the XUV700 for reference.

Mahindra has already revealed that the XUV.e9 will be launched in April 2025. It will be the second ‘Born Electric’ vehicle to come from Mahindra’s stable after XUV.e8 which will be launched by the end of 2024. The XUV.e8 is essentially an electrified version of the XUV700 and the XUV.e9 is the SUV Coupe version of the XUV.e8.

Interview: Jeep India reveals product strategy & what an electric future holds

Interview: Jeep India reveals product strategy & what an electric future holds

In the nearly decade-long presence in India, Jeep SUV models have competed in both the mass-market space as well as the luxury space. But the performance in terms of sheer volumes has not been much to write home about. So what makes the Jeep brand tick in a country which now has the world’s third-largest vehicle market in terms of sales? Is the business about number of units sold or is it about establishing and maintaining a premium image? And what does the future hold for a brand that prides in the rugged credentials of its offerings at a time when electric vehicles (EVs) are fast becoming a rage?

Watch: Jeep India strategy ahead: Will continue to be premium, lifestyle statement

HT Auto recently caught up with Jeep India Brand Director Priyesh Kumar to get an inside view on the sidelines of the unveil event of the 2024 Jeep Wrangler. Here are excerpts from the interview:

HT Auto: What does the Wrangler brand mean to Jeep and to, specifically, customers here in India?

The latest Wrangler from Jeep gets subtle style updates on the outside, feature additions within and is powered by a 2.0-litre petrol motor.

Priyesh: Wrangler is a product which has been known for its off-roading (capabilities). But what’s going to happen maybe time to come is that Wrangler is going to be equally good for the on-roading. New features that are getting added, like ADAS, Nappa leather seats, better navigation screens, six airbags, all those things are also going to give you an equally good on-road experience.

HT Auto: Wrangler has always been a bad boy. So what you are saying is it will be a bad boy but now with a good heart?

Priyesh: To some extent, yes. It is a bit poetic but it is correct.

HT Auto: How much has the Indian car-buying audience evolved to the whole concept of adventure driving, and what does it mean for a brand like Jeep and a model like Wrangler?

Priyesh: When it comes to the evolution of Indian customers towards experiencing lifestyle products, and maybe off-roading-capable products, they (customers) are still evolving. To further promote it, we are doing a lot of things like Jeep Camps, Jeep Trails, where we invite our customers to actually experience the product. So what I am saying is that it (fondness for off-road driving) is gradually coming up and it will help us as a brand.

HT Auto: But then help me understand what does Jeep stand for as a brand. Because on one end of the spectrum, you have the Compass and then the Grand Cherokee on the other. So does Jeep want mass appeal or have an aspirational aura?

Grand Cherokee
The newest version of the Grand Cherokee was launched in India in 2022. It sits on the top of the Jeep product pyramid in the country.

Priyesh: We are going to be more accessible to all segments of customers. The Compass, Meridian, Wrangler or the Grand Cherokee are all premium products, and we will maintain that premium-ness. Going forward, it will be a lifestyle statement as well. But as I mentioned, the customer base itself is evolving, the customer thought process is evolving. So that’s going to definitely help Jeep as a brand.

HT Auto: But let’s be honest, are you also chasing volumes because frankly, cars like Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, as capable as they are and as much as they may carry the aspirational tag, won’t bring in the numbers and volumes (in terms of sales)?

Priyesh: I will not say that we are not in that number game. But we are not going to compromise on the quality of customers or the profile of customers which we are looking at.What we’re looking at is to expand that base altogether. Network expansion is on the cards so our cars are more accessible. A key pillar of our strategy is going to be corporate sales. So, there are a couple of things which we are looking at.

HT Auto: So volume, but not in the actual definition of volume?

Priyesh: We are not going to be in that rat race. But yes, we have also aspirations and we will pick up the volumes with all the things which I mentioned to you.

HT Auto: Jeep has products in the global markets that are positioned below or at par with Compass in India. Why not explore the idea of getting some of those products , like the Renegade for example, to the Indian market?

Jeep Renegade
Jeep Renegade sold in several foreign markets has smaller exterior proportions than the Jeep Compass.

Priyesh: We are evaluating everything to be very honest with you. It’s not being limited to, let’s say, Compass on one side and Grand Cherokee. We are also evaluating the ever-changing customer expectations and market dynamics. On the basis of these, we will come with those products, whatever we find is appropriate for the market and makes business case for us.

HT Auto: Jeep CEO Antonio Fulani recently said that in India, a fair degree of localisation has been achieved but also hinted that more is required. You have 500 suppliers in the country. In your view, what more can possibly be done to bring down costs?

Priyesh: We have around 70 per cent localisation and are looking to take it to 90 per cent. If we have to grow, we can’t be limiting ourselves to our current numbers. So localisation makes the overall ecosystem more friendly to the Indian market. And that’s what is one of the priorities we have.

HT Auto: Going back to the product portfolio, can you give us a look into what is next after the 2024 Wrangler?

Priyesh: So I will start with what we did recently. We launched the Compass Night Eagle special edition which is a fully loaded variant. Then obviously, now is time for the new Wrangler. Then we have the Meridian 2.0. Again, we are looking at which all features should be part of the Meridian so that it isaligned to the market. It has to be something which appeals (to buyers) and it has to maintain the core DNA of Jeep. So all those things are being evaluated, post that also we will have a couple of product launches. But at this point in time, I am not in a position to share that.

HT Auto: What about electrics and what does battery technology and adoption hold for a brand that is about lifestyle, about adventure, about off-roading like Jeep. How do you not just stay relevant but stay ahead of the curve?

Priyesh: Globally, we have also got electric vehicles. Going forward, there are going to be some big ones like Wagoneer S and Recon. So globally, we are already there. In the domestic market, we are still exploring which products suit the market here. We are closely monitoring customer expectations, government policies, infrastructure development and regulations. We are very serious about this and we will come out with an option soon.

British Columbia has banned all cars with Level 3 ADAS in the province, directly impacting the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Mercedes-Benz EQS.

At a time when the global automobile industry is thriving towards adopting ADAS in an increasingly wide range of cars, the Canadian province of British Columbia has banned all cars with Level 3 ADAS. The province has recently updated its Motor Vehicle Act, prohibiting the use of vehicles with the Level 3 systems, which comes as a major clampdown on using such systems. The updated law makes it illegal to merely drive any Level 3 driving assist-equipped vehicle, even if the technology is not used.

The British Columbia government introduced the new rule on 18th March and enforced it into effect on 15th April. With this rule, driving a car in the province that comes equipped with Level 3 or above becomes illegal. However, currently, there are only two cars that come with Level 3 ADAS, which include the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Mercedes-BVenz EQS. This technology allows the drivers to go hands-off and eyes-off at a speed of less than 64 kmph.

This means if a person owns the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class or the Mercedes-Benz EQS, he or she will have to think twice before visiting the province. If caught, the person will be fined with a hefty amount ranging between CAD 368 and CAD 2,000 or even six months in jail as well.

Interestingly, while the British Columbia government has banned the cars equipped with Level 3 ADAS, future use of the technology is not ruled out. In a statement, the government has stated that new and emerging transportation technology needs further testing and policy adjustments before widespread use. The government also said that these new regulations will keep people safer on the roads and encourage even more use of active transportation, which is another step in modernizing the rules to keep up with new technologies that are changing how people are getting around.

The fourth-generation Maruti Suzuki Swift is ready to hit the Indian market in May 2024 with a revamped design, new features and a new 1.2-litre Z-Series three-cylinder petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology.

Maruti Suzuki Swift has been making headlines over the last few months. The popular hatchback is all set to receive a completely new generation avatar in May this year, which will come with a revamped design, new features and a new 1.2-litre Z-Series three-cylinder petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology. This is going to be a major update for the Swift after a long time and is expected to boost the appeal of the hatchback further.

The new generation Maruti Suzuki Swift made its global debut at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show. Since then, the hatchback has gone on sale in global markets like Europe and Japan. Now, India is going to be added to that list. The India-spec next-generation Swift would be similar to the global model. However, the new generation Swift sits on the same platform as the current model.

2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift: Exterior

The new Maruti Suzuki Swift, also codenamed YED, comes with a significantly distinctive visual appearance compared to the outgoing model. It gets a new front profile featuring an updated radiator grille flanked by sharper and redesigned LED projector headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights. The top variant would get LED fog lamps. The bumper too looks different. Moving to the side profile, the hatchback gets new design alloy wheels, and relocated rear passenger door handles. At the back, the new Swift sports redesigned LED taillights and a revamped bumper. The new Swift is expected to come available in new colour options.

2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift: Interior

Moving inside the cabin, the Swift gets a significantly updated dashboard layout sporting a free-standing touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital instrument cluster. Seat and upholstery materials too come refreshed.

2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift: Safety

On the safety front, the new Swift would come with six airbags, ABS with EBD and ESP as standard, a three-point seatbelt for the second-row centre passenger, reverse parking camera. The India-spec Swift may miss out on the 360-degree camera and ADAS that are available in the global model.

2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift: Powertrain

The new generation Maruti Suzuki Swift gets a new Z-Series 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, which replaces the current model’s K12 four-cylinder petrol unit. Expect the power and torque output of the new engine to be similar to what the K12 unit generates. The current engine churns out 89 bhp peak power and 113 Nm maximum torque. Expect a five-speed manual unit and AMT option to be available for the new Swift. The biggest highlight would be the mild-hybrid technology that would be available across all the variants.

The FIA and Formula 1 have announced the calendar for the 2025 season, which will see the championship kick off in March next year. The 2025 F1 season will see the Australia Grand Prix as the season opener instead of Saudi Arabia, which has been the championship opener in recent years. The switch has been made owing to the holy month of Ramadan which will take place between March 1-30 next year.

This puts the Middle East venues including Saudi Arabia and Bahrain out of contention to host the early rounds. This takes F1 to the land down under the 2025 campaign set to kick off at Melbourne’s Albert Park between March 14 and 16.

Will a Tesla owner buy a Tesla again? Here’s what survey finds

Will a Tesla owner buy a Tesla again? Here’s what survey finds

  • Tesla enjoys a massive following the world over and many of its offerings find a place in the list of top most-selling EVs in the world.
File photo of Tesla Model S electric vehicles. (REUTERS)

Even though the growth in sales of electric vehicles (EVs) is slowing down the world over, Tesla can perhaps rely on a majority of its existing buyers to once again buy a car from the brand. At least this is what 87 per cent of current Tesla owners in the US said in a survey conducted by Bloomberg Intelligence.

Tesla enjoys a massive cult following in markets where it has a presence. And while early adopters and affluent buyers are now making way for more gradual – and cautious – EV buyers, many of those who drive a Tesla appear happy with their ride. A brand loyalty of 87 per cent is impressive considering that Lexus finds itself second in the survey results with 68 per cent existing owners saying they would return to the Japanese brand. Toyota is third at 54 per cent.

The survey also found that 81 per cent of potential Tesla owners are those making their way in from a rival EV brand. The survey had 1,000 adult respondents who confirmed they had plans of either buying or leasing a new car within a year. The report observed that 42 per cent of those surveyed were willing to buy a fully-electric vehicle while 23 per cent were willing to purchase a hybrid. “Tesla, GM, and Stellantis’ slew of affordable EV models, set for debut by 2026, may tap more mass-market buyers,” said Steve Man, global lead director for auto & industrial market research at Bloomberg Intelligence and the lead author of the report. “Despite this, the market still has a long way to go to mature, with charging network inadequacy, range anxiety, and extended charging wait times topping the list of concerns for all car buyers.”

Tesla EVs like Model 3 and Model S are extremely popular in markets such as the US and China, and repeatedly find a place in the list of most-sold EVs in the world, as well as most-sold vehicles overall.
