Maruti Suzuki Dezire won the title of best-selling car in 2025 by selling 2.14 lakh units, while Creta and Tata Nexon lagged behind in the SUV segment. These sales figures are very special for Dezire because these days there is a huge demand for SUV cars in India. In such a situation, it is very special in itself for a sedan model to become a bestseller.

New Delhi. Maruti Suzuki has won the SUV segment at a time when SUV cars were at the peak of their power in the market. The compact sedan has won the title of best-selling car in the calendar year 2025, while SUVs have been the first choice of buyers in the market. This is considered a big achievement for the model, because it came at a time when SUV cars were dominating the market trends and had the largest market share. 30 percent of Maruti Suzuki's total sales come from SUVs. At the same time, SUV body type has captured 55 percent of the total passenger vehicle market.

2.14 lakh units of Dezire
If we talk about figures, Maruti Suzuki Dezire has topped the list of best-selling models with sales of 2.14 lakh units. This was followed by Creta in the SUV segment, which sold 2.01 lakh units, and Tata Nexon also recorded sales of 2.01 lakh units. Maruti Suzuki WagonR and Maruti Suzuki Ertiga were at fourth and fifth position. WagonR sold 1.94 lakh units, while Ertiga sold 1.92 lakh units.

Family's first choice
Maruti Suzuki Dezire has always been a favorite among family buyers and is also very popular among fleet operators under the Tour S variant. Dezire's strong features have played an important role in attracting family customers. Its latest generation model was launched in late 2024, due to which it remained relevant in the market and was successful in creating its own identity apart from the Swift hatchback. It is also special that the new generation Dezire is continuously leaving behind its nearest rivals in the segment – Hyundai Aura and the new Honda Amaze in sales.

changing automobile market
These figures show a big change in the Indian automobile market. Even though the SUV segment still accounts for more than half of total industry sales, the most popular model remains a compact sedan, reflecting the importance of value, efficiency and ownership costs in consumer purchasing decisions. Additionally, the company said that its hatchback segment cars have also contributed significantly to the total sales. Baleno became the best-selling model in December 2025 with sales of 22,108 units, thereby maintaining customer interest in the premium hatchback segment even though the market is dominated by SUVs.

Mini segment market share
Maruti Suzuki said that the recovery in the entry-level and compact segments has been possible due to increased affordability and better financing options after GST adjustment. The mini segment now accounts for 6.2 percent of total sales, with new buyers coming into the market once again.

New Delhi. Something amazing has been witnessed in the Indian Passenger Vehicle (PV) market. Only once in the 40 years from 1985 to 2024 has a sedan topped India's annual car sales chart. This happened in 2018, when Maruti Suzuki Dezire became the best-selling car in the country. Sedans are going to top the sales charts once again in 2025. Once again this model is Maruti Suzuki Dezire. Even after so many years, no other sedan has been able to compete with it.

Creta left behind
The country's largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki India has sold 1,95,416 units of Dezire in the domestic market between January and November this year. This is 7,448 units ahead of the second model, which is Hyundai Motor India's popular SUV Creta, which has sold 1,87,968 units. Dezire is going to become number one at a time when the sedan segment is facing tough competition from the SUV segment. The PV market share of sedans is less than 10%, while SUVs contribute about 55%.
