Stocks in BMW AG and Porsche AG declined on concerns over potential US tariff hikes, with BMW falling 6.8 percent and Porsche hitting a two-year low. German automakers may face challenges from US trade policies amid competition in China and Europe.
Shares of German automakers led by BMW AG and Porsche AG fell on concerns that the US might raise tariffs on imported cars after Donald Trump returns to the White House.
BMW, which earlier Wednesday reported disappointing quarterly earnings, fell as much as 6.8 percent in Frankfurt. Porsche, maker of the 911 sports cars, fell to its lowest intraday price since the stock began trading more than two years ago.

Additional tariffs would hurt German automakers, which ship more vehicles to the U.S. than any other country. The market is becoming increasingly attractive to them due to strong demand for large sport utility vehicles and a slower shift toward EVs than in Europe, allowing them to sell more of their higher-margin combustion-engine models.
During his campaign, Trump said he planned to impose tariffs on foreign-made cars shipped to the US to protect local jobs.
Mercedes-Benz Group AG declined 4.9 percent. Volkswagen AG fell as much as 4.4 percent.

German automakers operate several factories in the US where they produce cars for both local buyers and exports – meaning any European retaliatory measures could compound the damage from the trade dispute.
The conflict with the US would create another problem for the Germans, who already face stiff price competition in China and lower demand in Europe.
“Trump is pursuing a distinctly protectionist agenda that relies on higher import tariffs and more restrictions on international trade,” Clemens Fuest, president of Germany's Ifo economic research institute, said on Wednesday.

The German automotive sector condemned the recent tariffs, calling them harmful to business and employment.
The German government on Wednesday urged the EU and China to reach a compromise, a day after Brussels announced additional tariffs on Chinese-made electric cars.
“Both Brussels and Beijing are being urged to find sustainable and creative solutions through ongoing dialogue,” said Stefan Habestreit, a spokesman for Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in Europe's biggest economy, whose key auto industry is beset by problems. .
Germany voted against additional tariffs, measures which Habestreit said would “naturally draw a reaction from the Chinese side”.

“These kinds of trade disputes are not something we should even aspire to,” he told a news conference.
New tariffs of up to 35 percent were announced by the European Commission on Tuesday after an EU investigation found that Chinese state subsidies were undermining European automakers.
Beijing said on Wednesday it had filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization, with China's commerce ministry vowing to “take all necessary measures to firmly protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies.”
Negotiations are ongoing between the EU and China and the tariffs could be lifted if both sides reach a satisfactory agreement.

On Tuesday, Germany's Automotive Industry Association, which represents car giants such as Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes, called the tariffs “a step backward for free global trade and thus a step back for prosperity, job protection and growth in Europe.” told.
Volkswagen warned on Wednesday that “painful” cuts were on the way as it announced a fall in third-quarter profits due to falling sales in China, its biggest market.
At least three German VW plants are at risk and thousands of jobs at the namesake brand could be lost, labor representatives said this week.

BMW AG is recalling about 700,000 vehicles in China due to coolant pump malfunctions, the latest blow to the German carmaker that has been grappling with other vehicle malfunctions.
China's State Administration for Market Regulation said in a statement on Friday that BMW will recall 499,539 locally produced cars and 188,371 imported vehicles from March 1, 2025. The agency said faulty coolant pump plugs installed in some models could rust or corrode, causing a short circuit and, in extreme cases, a fire.

Affected models include locally produced 3 Series and 5 Series vehicles, as well as several imported X Series SUVs.
This recall has been done after a huge decline in deliveries in China, the largest market in terms of revenue. In the third quarter, shipments of BMW and Mini brand cars in China fell 30 percent, the sharpest decline in more than four years, the group said last week.

In September, BMW issued a profit warning due to the global recall of 1.5 million cars related to faulty braking systems supplied by Continental AG. Fixing those defects is expected to cost the automaker about €1 billion ($1.1 billion).
The fault was discovered in August and BMW alerted Chinese authorities while it investigated, a spokesperson said in a statement. The spokesperson said the repairs in question should take about three hours and that vehicles in Europe will not be affected. They were not immediately able to explain why the recall would not begin until March.

ADAC's survey revealed that about 60 percent of Germans prefer to buy cars from Chinese automobile companies. Especially in the case of electric vehicles, the inclination of German buyers is clearly inclined towards Chinese-made cars. According to the survey, among those who are planning to buy a fully electric car, 80 percent of German consumers are showing interest in electric cars manufactured in China.
Chinese cars are being liked by the youth The popularity of Chinese cars is increasing rapidly, especially among the youth. About 74 percent of Germans aged 30 to 39 are willing to buy Chinese brand cars, while the figure is 72 percent in the age group of 18 to 29 years.
Increased craze for Chinese high-end cars Even in terms of high-end models, Chinese cars are popular among German consumers. BMW is said to be working on a new five-seater SUV that will replace the current iX3 in the company’s portfolio and is likely to pack around 600 bhp. This will be joined by the BMW i3 saloon, which will be based on the Neue Klasse concept showcased at the 2023 Munich Motor Show. More models will be added to the portfolio in the second half of the decade.
The upcoming Vision Neue Klasse X will take on the upcoming Porsche Macan EV and the newly introduced Audi Q6 e-tron. India is one of the fastest-growing electric vehicle markets in the world. Over the last few years, both legacy players and EV startups have been drastically transforming the landscape of the Indian EV industry. Electric two-wheelers dominate the Indian EV market, but car manufacturers too are introducing interesting products. While homegrown car manufacturers have been launching new electric cars in the country, foreign brands are also bringing their respective products into the segment.

Interestingly, like the fossil-fuel-propelled passenger vehicle market, the Indian electric car market is witnessing the rise of SUVs. In 2023, the majority of the electric cars launched in the country were SUVs.
Here is a comprehensive list of the electric cars that were launched in India in 2023.

BMW’s high-performance car division, popularly known as BMW M has no intention to follow its arch-rival Mercedes-AMG’s strategy of offering downsized engines for its sporty cars. Also, the German automaker plans to continue selling its V8 and inline-six engines, claims a report by CarExpert. This revelation comes despite the build-up of pressure due to stringent emission norms.
By: HT Auto Desk | Updated on: 17 Dec 2023, 10:52 AM
In an interaction, BMW M’s boss Frank van Meel said that the automaker’s high-performance division has no plan to introduce three and four-cylinder engine-powered cars alongside the future electric vehicles. He said that putting a smaller engine under the hood of a full-blown M model in combination with big batteries simply would not be the right way for the auto company.
Meel reportedly said that BMW M wants to have a strong base engine and going to smaller engines in combination with bigger batteries wouldn’t be the right way for the automaker. “That’s not the way we see it because we want to have a strong base engine anyway. So, for us, going to smaller combustion engines in combination with bigger batteries would not be the right way. For us, then the step will be to go purely electric right away. And do that in a proper way,” van Meel reportedly said.
BMW M is working on pure electric cars as the demand for EVs is rising. However, such cars are not coming anytime soon, claimed van Meel. He believes that the electric propulsion technology is not ready yet for a track-focused machine, which can provide continuous power output in a significant way. “It has to do one or two laps of the Nurburgring Nordschleife at full speed, actually, then with the battery, if you go, let’s say over 250 kilometres per hour, you won’t get any much further anyway. So that’s currently the restriction,” the CEO added.
BMW is working with a Michigan-based energy storage technology company named Out Next Energy (ONE), which announced that it used a battery on a BMW iX test car, which achieved nearly a 1,000-kilometre range on a single charge. Interestingly, BMW is one of the major investors in the company, which makes us think that the German luxury car brand that is aiming big with its EV strategy may introduce a new battery to the future iX electric SUVs, which will enable the cars to run nearly 1,000 kilometres on a single charge.

BMW is one of the leading car manufacturers globally that has been aggressively working on electric vehicles. The automaker has already launched multiple electric cars across different segments globally, including India as well. One of the BMW electric cars is the iX SUV, which is available in India alongside some other global markets. The BMW iX currently offers a 372-kilometre range on a single charge. However, ONE claims that with its Gemini dual-chemistry battery, the electric SUV can get a massive boost, enabling it to run nearly thrice the range compared to the current model.

The battery technology company has claimed that its Gemini battery is rated at 450 Wh/l of volumetric energy density, while the energy content is more than 185 kWh in the same space allotted to typical passenger electric vehicles’ packs.
Meanwhile, BMW has applied for a trademark for the iM3 nomenclature, which fuelled speculation that the automaker is working on a performance-focused electric vehicle under its M division, possibly an all-electric M3. However, BMW M boss Frank van Meel has revealed that despite the trademark filing, the automaker will not make an electric performance car named iM3. On the other hand, he also said that an electric M3 is a viable option for the automaker.
BMW 7 Series sedan is all set to receive the Level 3 autonomous driving technology. The German luxury has revealed that the 7 Series flagship sedan will receive the BMW Personal Pilot L3 system from next year, which is essentially a hands-free driver assistance technology. The L3 autonomous driving technology is capable of controlling the car at speeds up to 60 kmph. Also, the addition of this new technology increases the price of the car significantly.
By: HT Auto Desk | Updated on: 12 Nov 2023, 09:55 AM
BMW has revealed that the 7 Series and i7 models will receive this advanced autonomous driving technology in Germany initially. However, it is not sure when the India-spec model will receive this feature.BMW will offer this hands-free driving technology as an option to the customers of the 7 Series and i7. This technology works with the help of multiple sensors and cameras that are fitted to the front of the car. BMW claims that the technology can work in broad daylight as well as in the dark.
Watch: BMW i7 electric sedan: Luxury on wheels
The current generation BMW 7 Series is already a more opulent and tech-friendly sedan than before. The addition of the Personal Pilot L3 will further enhance the capabilities of the car. The i7 comes as the all-electric alternative to the 7 Series and takes on the Mercedes-Benz EQS. BMW India launched both the 7 Series and the i7 in the country earlier this year in January.
While the BMW Personal Pilot L3 would essentially make driving easier for the 7 Series and i7 drivers, the technology doesn’t help the luxury cars’ design. To get this technology, both the BMW 7 Series and i7 get ultrasound sensors, radar and 3D lidar. Some of the hardware required for this technology is fitted into the upper part of the massive kidney grilles. There are now inset trapezoidal areas with rectangular sensors positioned on each side of the grille, which add some extra clutter to the grille. The addition of these sensors makes it look like small kidney-shaped parts are on top of larger kidney grilles.
German auto giant has teased the upcoming M Sport version of the X4 SUV in India ahead of its launch. The carmaker has confirmed that the X4 M40i SUV will make India debut on October 26. The latest iteration of the X4 M performance model has already been introduced globally. In India, BMW had launched the facelift version of the X4 SUV back in March last year. However, earlier this year, the German carmaker had delisted the SUV from its official websites.
By: HT Auto Desk | Updated on: 20 Oct 2023, 14:07 PM
The new X4 M40i SUV is likely to come to India through the completely-built unit (CBU) route. It is expected to carry the same 3.0-litre M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine under the hood that is used for global models. The engine is also mated to a 48V mild-hybrid technology. The transmission job is handled by an 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission with Sport and Manual shift modes and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and Launch Control. The engine is capable of churning out 382 bhp of maximum power and 502 Nm of peak torque. The SUV can sprint 0-100 kmph in under five seconds and has a top speed of 210 kmph.
The mild-hybrid powertrain helps the SUV to boost its output by around 11 bhp. It helps the X4 M40i run for up to 50 kms purely on electric power.
In terms of looks, the BMW X4 M40i will sport a different kidney grille than the ones seen on other models. It is larger and a single-piece frame instead of the standard twin grille setup with a black bar. The front headlights feature full LED technology as standard. The SUV sits on 20‑inch M light alloy wheels. There are M Sport badging s all around to differentiate the SUV from its standard X4 version.
The interior of the X4 M40i is also sporty. The dashboard is dominated by a free-standing, central digital display which houses the 10.25-inch touchsreen infotainment system as standard. There is also a 12.3-inch version of the touchscreen display which is likely to be offered as an option. The upholstery has been updated with new sports seats. It also gets a three-zone automatic climate control.
The price of the BMW X4, before it got delisted in India, used to start from Rs. 71.90 lakh (ex-showroom). Expect the X4 M40i SUV to cost at least ₹90 lakh (ex-showroom) when launched.
BMW has been actively teasing the second-generation X2 crossover over the last few weeks and now, the German luxury car brand has taken the wrap off the car. The new generation BMW X2 comes with fresh styling, two powertrain options and a wide range of new technologies onboard. Slated for public debut at the upcoming Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo later this month, the X2 could come to India after launching in other global markets.
By: HT Auto Desk | Updated on: 11 Oct 2023, 14:33 PM
The new BMW X2 gets a styling that makes it significantly different from its previous iteration. The new X2 gets a coupe-like roofline that flows seamlessly into the rear. The upright front profile, flared wheel arches and muscular rear profile give the crossover a strong and bold visual appearance compared to its predecessor. The car also comes with updated LED headlamps and taillights. The optional illuminated kidney grille is another design element that sets the X2 apart from its smaller sibling X1. The new X2 is also the first compact crossover from the automaker to come with optional 21-inch wheels.

The car comes with a clean surface thanks to minimal dynamic lines at the side profile. The door handles too come integrated with the body enhancing the aerodynamic efficiency of the car. BMW claims that the new X2 has grown by 7.6 inches in length to 179.8 inches, while its wheelbase comes 0.9 inches longer than the outgoing model.
Moving inside the cabin, the new BMW X2 offers more space to the occupants than to the dimensional upgrade. With more focus on touch and voice control through the BMW Curved Display and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, the car comes equipped with BMW iDrive 9. The curved display combines a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch touchscreen infotainment display into a single glass panel. Among the new features inside is a cabin-facing camera that can take photos and record videos.

This is the base variant and it can churn out 237 bhp peak power and 400 Nm of maximum torque. Also, it can reach 0-96 kmph in 6.2 seconds. Powering the top variant X2 M35i xDrive is a more potent 2.0-litre engine that pumps out 307 bhp peak power and 400 Nm peak torque. Wireless charging technology has become one of the prime features offered in modern cars. While all the luxury cars come with this new-age technology-driven feature, mass-market cars too get the same. However, the wireless charging technology in certain BMW cars appears to be causing the Apple iPhone 15 models to permanently lose the ability to use NFC functions such as Apple Pay and Apple CarKey, reported Mac Rumors.

The report claims that the problem is connected to the NFC chip inside the Apple iPhone 15 models. The NFC chip works on an ultra-low frequency and allows the iPhone 15 users to perform certain functions wirelessly. These include paying for a product or service using Apple Pay or unlocking their cars using Apple CarKey. However, the report claims that charging the iPhone 15 using the wireless charging docks of certain BMW cars may damage the phone’s ability to use the NFC chip permanently.

One of the BMW models that have caused such a problem for a user is the 3 Series. An iPhone 15 user has reportedly written on Reddit that the BMW 3 Series acted like an oven heater. The user reportedly claimed that barely charging the iPhone 15 using the wireless charger onboard a BMW 3 Series resulted in the smartphone becoming super hot. However, the report didn’t specify what other BMW cars are causing this issue for iPhone 15 models.
The wireless charging function in a car cabin is powered by a separate charging coil and it uses induction technology. The system works when the dock and the phone’s back are located close to one another. It is not clear, what is causing the malfunction in this case. The report has not revealed whether the iPhone 15 has some issues with the charging coil or the components used in the BMW cars are causing the problem.

The all-new BMW iX1 comes with fast charging technology. Using a 130 kW DC fast charger its battery pack can be topped up from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in 20 minutes. BMW claims the battery pack can ensure a 120-kilometre range with 10 minutes charge using the fast charger. An 11 kW AC charger tops up the battery pack fully in about 6.3 hours.
The BMW iX1 comes with a standard two-year warranty for unlimited kilometres. Also, the battery pack is covered by an eight-year or up to 160,000 kilometres warranty.
The electric luxury SUV comes with a bold and muscular design, in line with BMW’s contemporary styling philosophy. Other design elements include segment-first adaptive LED headlights, square wheel arches, 18-inch M light alloy wheels, a large surface diffuser at the back and L-shaped LED taillights. The BMW iX1 is available in Alpine White non-metallic paint and Space Silver, Black Sapphire and Storm Bay metallic colour options.

The first thing that catches attention inside the cabin is the fully digital BMW curved display. The automaker has used M Sport leather on the steering wheel, while the blue ring finisher logo also adds distinctiveness. It sports ambient lighting, dual-zone AC, a 12-speaker audio system, and multiple massage options for the front seats.
Tech-loaded cars may offer a lot of convenience to owners, but can also become a data privacy nightmare. Study by a California-based agency reveals that modern cars with connected features through apps and satellite collect massive personal data of the user and share externally. The agency, called Mozilla Foundation, reviewed 25 car brands operating in United States and European countries and found all of them breaching data privacy. The study has raised a debate whether cars should also be monitored for practically spying on the owner.

Nissan, Tesla, Kia, Hyundai Motor, Toyota, Volkswagen and BMW are some of the global brands who have been found breaching data privacy. The study says vague data security standards while using in-car apps, telematics, digital controls can steal personal data. These may include sensitive personal information to sexual activity and more. Almost every car manufacturer studied have admitted that they are collecting such personal information which they share with government or law enforcement agencies.
The survey, called Privacy Not Included, has raised a big concern given that these vehicles are also susceptible to hacking. Jen Caltrider, the study’s research lead, says, “Cars seem to have really flown under the privacy radar and I’m really hoping that we can help remedy that because they are truly awful. Cars have microphones and people have all kinds of sensitive conversations in them. Cars have cameras that face inward and outward.”
The survey also says that cars have the worst data privacy record among dozen other products ranging from connected home appliances like Google or Alexa, fitness trackers to even smart speakers. The survey marked Nissan as the worst among all the brands studied. The survey says the Japanese auto giant is “probably the worst car company we reviewed, and that says something because all car companies are really bad at privacy.” Nissan says it can draw inferences from the data to create user profiles which reflect the the person’s ‘preferences, characteristics, psychological trends, predispositions, behavior, attitudes, intelligence, abilities, and aptitudes’. The carmaker has also admitted that it can even collect ‘genetic information’ or ‘genetic characteristics’. However, Nissan did not explain how it collects data on sexual activity of its users.
Kia and Hyundai are not too far behind either. Caltrider says, “Kia mentions sex life. General Motors and Ford both mentioned race and sexual orientation. Hyundai said that they could share data with government and law enforcement based on formal or informal requests.”
Tesla also scored high on Mozilla’s “creepiness” index. According to the survey, opting out of data collection in a Tesla car is difficult as its privacy notice says the EV maker may not be able to notify drivers “in real time” of issues that could result in “reduced functionality, serious damage, or inoperability.”
Out of the 25 brands surveyed, 19 said they can sell personal data, while half of them are ready to share these information with governments on request. Renault and Dacia are the only two carmakers who offer drivers to delete all data collected by their cars.
