Considering that Tata Motors usually offer CNG in their lower-mid all the way to top variants, we should see the CNG option available in Pure and higher trims.

Nexon CNG Expected Price Logic

Tata Motors have the upper hand in offering a CNG-bifuel option in the B2-segment along with a usable boot space. The Nexon CNG will also become the only turbo petrol car in India with CNG bi-fuel option. Since the other carmakers don’t have a turbo CNG engine, the Nexon CNG should offer remarkable drivability even after experiencing some drop in performance.

Still, we expect them to follow the industry standards and maintain the status quo. While they will become the only one to offer CNG and a usable boot with a turbo petrol engine, they don’t have a strong grip in the CNG market. Thus, we expect them to follow the norm of charging Rs. 95,000 for the lower running costs of CNG cars. Limiting the reach of the CNG powertrain to Pure and higher variants will also help Tata position the Nexon CNG as a premium alternative.

Thus, we expect the Nexon CNG to come with the manual transmission and cost between Rs. 10.75 lakh and Rs. 14.55 lakh.

There are only 2 variants of the Tigor currently offering CNG, petrol-manual as well as petrol-automatic powertrain options. Considering this information, we expect only these trims to offer the option of CNG and automatic transmission together.

Tata currently charge Rs. 95,000 for the CNG kit in the Tigor and Rs. 60,000 for the AMT automatic transmission. Since the new model is combining these two features, our estimation suggests that they will simply add the two prices up and make the new CNG-AMT variants Rs. 1.50 lakh pricier than the petrol-manual trims. Although, the sum comes to Rs. 1.55 lakh, we expect them to carry the same premium as the Tiago CNG-automatic powertrains.

Tigor CNG-AMT Expected Price Logic

Considering that they are the first ones to offer a clutch pedal-free option in a CNG car, we’d usually say that they might be priced rather well. This would help them establish a market before proceeding with upward price revisions.

However, considering Tata’s recent pricing structure, we’re pretty confident that they may not keep the prices lucrative. After all, they are the only ones in the country bringing such a unique and city-friendly powertrain option. This comes on top of the fact that their CNG cars have a fairly usable boot space because of the use of 2 smaller cylinders to store CNG fuel.

Thus, we expect the 2 Tigor CNG-automatic variants to cost Rs. 8.35 lakh and Rs. 9.55 lakh (ex-showroom).

There are only 4 variants of the Tiago currently offering CNG, petrol-manual and petrol-automatic powertrain options. Considering this information, we expect only these trims to offer the option of CNG and automatic transmission together.

Tata currently charge Rs. 95,000 for the CNG kit in the Tiago and Rs. 55,000 for the AMT automatic transmission. Since the new model is combining these two features, our estimation suggests that they will simply add the two prices up and make the new CNG-AMT variants Rs. 1.50 lakh pricier than the petrol-manual trims.

Tiago CNG-AMT Expected Price Logic

Considering that they are the first ones exploring the market for a need for clutch pedal-free option in a CNG car, we’d usually say that they might be priced rather well. This helps them establish a market before proceeding with price revisions. However, considering Tata’s recent pricing structure, we’re pretty confident that they may not keep the prices lucrative. After all, they are the only ones in the country bringing this unique powertrain combination. This comes on top of the fact that their CNG cars have a fairly usable boot space because of the use of 2 smaller cylinders to store CNG fuel.

Thus, we expect the Tiago CNG-automatic to cost between Rs. 7.90 lakh and Rs. 8.90 lakh (ex-showroom).

Kia Sonet 2024 Facelift Expected Price Range With Logic (Updated)

Kia Sonet 2024 Facelift Expected Price Range With Logic (Updated)

Update (Dec 21, 2023): After carefully analysing the brochure and variant wise features of the Sonet 2024, we have updated the expected prices of the Sonet facelift. Please note that these are our estimations based on the information available as of December 21, 2023. We’re not expecting to modify these prices anymore. So, you can consider this as the final revision from our side to the Sonet 2024 expected prices.

2024 Kia Sonet Facelift Expected Price

As we saw with the Seltos facelift, we’re not expecting any significant price revisions. At the time of the launch, even the Seltos facelift didn’t add too much to the old Seltos price. Even with the addition of ADAS, dual-zone auto AC and a larger sunroof, the prices were only mildly higher than the older model.

We’re not expecting Kia to disrupt the market with the Sonet facelift either. So, we should see a marginal increase at best in the Sonet facelift’s prices over the outgoing model. However, we also have to keep in mind the feature revisions. Every single variant of the new Sonet gets a few extra features. The 2024 Sonet price expectation following table takes all of these factors into account:

The only notable thing here is that the Sonet facelift is getting a new diesel-manual powertrain, which wasn’t available earlier. This will help them keep the starting prices for Sonet diesel buyers under control as it won’t get the auto-clutch manual transmission.

Even with the addition of ADAS features in the 2024 Sonet top model shouldn’t increase the prices too much. We noted with the Seltos facelift that even with so many extra features in the top model, the launch prices still respected the Rs. 20.0 lakh price barrier. While Tata have already breached it with the Nexon diesel-automatic, we still expect Kia to mind it. Unlike Tata, we have seen sensible pricing from Kia in the past and we’re confident that even with the Sonet 2024, we should get a reasonable price tag for most of the variants.

Thus, we expect the Sonet 2024 facelift to cost between Rs. 8.0 lakh and Rs. 15.0 lakh (ex-showroom).

Now, let’s evaluate each variant one by one to see how much it could cost. For this estimation, we’ll use the old Sonet’s prices as the baseline. Then, we’ll see the feature changes and add the appropriate perceived value for the features. Here, we’ll also take into account any other considerations like round figures and Kia’s historical pricing strategy to get to a final price. 2024 Kia Sonet HTE Expected Price Logic

In the base model, you get almost Rs. 35,000 worth of features but you also lose some basic features. Net, the new Sonet base model adds about Rs. 30,000 worth of features over the outgoing model. To keep the prices under Rs. 8.0 lakh, we expect Kia to ask for another Rs. 20,000 for this model.

As for the HTE diesel-manual, this powertrain is new for the Sonet. But the Sonet diesel-ACMT was earlier available for Rs. 9.95 lakh (ex-showroom). With the lack of auto-clutch manual, we can expect it to make up for the additional features and maintain a sub-Rs. 10.0 lakh starting price.

Kia Sonet 2024 HTK Expected Price Logic

The HTK variant adds almost Rs. 40,000 worth of features. So, we’re expecting the new Sonet to deliver better value here by only asking for Rs. 30,000 more. This way, the petrol variants price will remain (barely) under Rs. 9.0 lakh while the diesel-manual can respect the Rs. 11.0 lakh psychological barrier.

Here again, the older 1.2L petrol to diesel price gap can remain at Rs. 2.0 lakh. The lack of auto-clutch (IMT) will help compensate for the costs of adding extra features.

Kia Sonet Facelift HTK Plus Expected Price With Logic

The Sonet 2024 HTK Plus variant adds about Rs. 12,000 – 15,000 worth of features. But the price gap could be higher than that. The Sonet HTK Plus 1.2L petrol could cost Rs. 9.90 lakh and remain below the Rs. 10.0 lakh psychological barrier.

Meanwhile, the jump to the turbo petrol is easier to justify as it may only cost Rs. 80,000 more. Not only does it offer more power and better drivability, it does so without compromising on the fuel efficiency. Not to mention, the inclusion of auto-clutch manual transmission makes it almost as good as an automatic in crawling traffic.

This variant may maintain a turbo petrol to diesel price gap of Rs. 1.0 lakh. While it was only Rs. 90,000 before, we expect Kia to keep this variant a little pricey so that the jump to diesel-ACMT comes across as more reasonable. With this strategy, regardless of whether the buyer chooses HTK Plus diesel-MT or the HTX diesel-ACMT, Kia will stand to make a better profit.

The HTX variant of the Sonet 2024 could cost Rs. 11.70 lakh with the turbo petrol-ACMT powertrain. This price is Rs. 25,000 higher than before as it also gets almost Rs. 30,000 worth of additional features than before.

The gap from petrol-ACMT to petrol-automatic will be higher than before as it also gets some Rs. 25,000 – 30,000 worth of additional features. Similarly, these extra features are also available with the diesel-ACMT and diesel-automatic powertrains but not with the diesel-manual. This move will also encourage buyers to skip the diesel-MT and go with the diesel-ACMT for better value.

Kia Sonet Facelift GTX Plus Expected Price With Logic

The GTX Plus variant is where you can expect to see some real fireworks. Because of the ADAS features, the value proposition just jumps through the roof. Since they are using cameras to enable ADAS, the cost of implementation is low. But, the real-world benefits are immense if it ends up working as intended.

We feel like this variant will offer a perceived value of almost Rs. 1.0 lakh with the ADAS features while costing only a little more. Keeping the prices per our expectations will also allow Kia to keep the GTX Plus variants under the psychological barrier of Rs. 14.0 lakh for the petrol-automatic and Rs. 15.0 lakh for the diesel-automatic.

Why 2024 Sonet Facelift Won’t Cost More Than Rs. 15.0 Lakh?

It’s worth noting that the Nexon was the first car in the B2-SUV space to blow through the Rs. 15.0 lakh psychological price barrier. It offers such poor value and feature distribution that we couldn’t recommend even a single variant of the car.

So, it’s not unrealistic to expect the Sonet to also do so. However, we’re still betting on Kia to approach the Sonet 2024 with a sensible pricing strategy and bring it back in the game with a bang. We’re pretty confident that this pricing will help the Sonet achieve consistent 5-figure monthly dispatch numbers and turn on some heat on the low value-for-money offerings like the Nexon.

The previous version of the Seltos came with a 1.35L turbo petrol engine but it was discontinued when the BS6-2 norms came into effect. Meanwhile, Kia were waiting for this moment to introduce the more powerful 1.5L turbo petrol engine to replace the 1.35L engine. Hence, we don’t have the most recent turbo petrol variants’ prices of the Seltos to form a baseline.

When it comes to the prices of automatic transmission, Kia are pretty consistent and quite fair too. The normal petrol CVT is available in the HTX variant and it costs Rs. 1.0 lakh more than the manual. In the case of the diesel variants, we don’t have a variant with manual as well as automatic transmission options. So, I referred to the prices of the Carens, where the automatic costs around Rs. 80,000 – 1.0 lakh over the auto-clutch manual transmission. This is the tentative price premium for the automatic transmission over the turbo petrol as well as turbo diesel engines.

2023 Kia Seltos Price — Petrol Variants Expected Price

With the knowledge of older Kia Seltos prices, we can assume that the automatic transmission should cost Rs. 1.0 lakh more than the comparable manual or auto-clutch manual variants.

The rest of the table is fairly self-explanatory with respect to the petrol variant prices of the Seltos 2023. Now, let me answer some of the questions that came to my mind while estimating the price list.

Why Do You Think The Starting Price Of The Seltos Facelift Will Remain More Or Less Same As Before?

While the new Seltos 2023 brings new style even to the base variant and also adds features like rear sunshade, it also removes front and rear armrests. So, it looks like the Seltos facelift is giving the business-as-usual vibe.

Moreover, it’s now facing stiffer competition. The Grand Vitara and Hyryder offer a more complete base variant. I personally love cars that offer a rich experience with their base variants even if they cost a little more. The Grand Vitara and Hyryder’s base variants feel more complete and more competently priced. The addition of Elevate will further make things difficult for the Seltos if it carries a value pricing.

When the Seltos first arrived in India, it had little competition. Kia officials know all of these points quite well too. Defending their market share in the C-SUV segment is just as critical for the Seltos as it is to maximise profits. So, adding nominal price premium with the facelift seems reasonable.

Why Do You Think The Seltos 2023 Will Top Out At Rs. 20.0 Lakh And Not Cost More?

The new Seltos adds panoramic sunroof, ADAS features and a new design among major features. But if you look closely you’ll notice that these are not enough to warrant a significant price jump.

Features

The panoramic sunroof is not necessarily a feature addition but keeping up with the segment standards. The Hyryder, Creta, Grand Vitara and Astor already offer this feature. Coming to the ADAS, the Astor already offers this feature for a small incremental price. The Honda Elevate will also follow a similar approach as we have seen with the City sedan.

Finally, the design update was long overdue. The Seltos is getting its first major overhaul in 4 years since first launch. The typical product life cycle for a high-value model is 6 years. So, the design update is already a year late by industry standards.

All things considered, the Seltos is adding incremental updates to remain ahead of the major players in the C-SUV space — not enough to break the norms.

Psychological Barrier

Price Then comes the point of breaking the Rs. 20.0 lakh psychological barrier. It makes sense to decisively breach that level when you have the enough ammunition to justify blowing through the 20-lakh mark. And when you do, it’s best to plough through it like it was obvious and price a car at Rs. 21.0 lakh while making it an easy upgrade by offering enough features to justify Rs. 22.0 lakh price point. So, breaching it for a price of Rs. 20.25 lakh makes little sense since the current feature upgrades make it difficult to justify a price jump of more than Rs. 2.0 lakh over the current Seltos X-Line diesel-automatic.

Let Someone Else Do It

Eventually, someone will have to price their C-segment SUV beyond the Rs. 20.0 lakh mark. But doing so first also brings the responsibility of justifying it. It’s best to let someone else be confident enough (or arrogant enough) to break that psychological barrier for the C-SUV segment. Then the others can jump in later safely, walk over this level like it doesn’t exist and use the value card while doing so.

On the flip side, I agree that the Rs. 20.0 lakh mark is not as critical as the Rs. 10.0 lakh level. Buyers in this segment are less sensitive to price than budget buyers. Currently, the most expensive C-segment SUV tops out at Rs. 19.90 lakh (ex-showroom), and that tells me something about the existence of this barrier even if it’s not too big to cross. But, in the meantime, I’m reserving the right to be wrong.

Why The Turbo Petrol Could Cost Rs. 2.0 Lakh More In HTK Plus Variant?

I have 2 reasons behind this thought:

  1. Carens: In the Carens, the Prestige 7-seater 1.5L turbo petrol costs Rs. 1.60 lakh more than the 1.5L normal petrol manual.
  2. Panoramic Sunroof: The HTK Plus turbo petrol gets the panoramic sunroof, which is only available in higher variants if you buy any other powertrain (petrol-MT or diesel-ACMT). It counts for something on top of the Rs. 1.60 lakh Kia think the more powerful turbo petrol engine and the convenience of the auto-clutch manual transmission deserve.

Together, the Rs. 2.0 lakh comes across as a good value and justifies upgrading to the HTK Plus turbo instead of buying the HTK Plus normal petrol-manual.

2023 Kia Seltos Price — Diesel Variants Expected Price

As for the diesel variants, the same engine with transmission options will power the Kia Seltos 2023 facelift. So, the changes will mostly come in the form of variant-to-variant feature changes. Here too, I’m expecting the prices to remain about the same as before and only witness a nominal hike.

The diesel-auto-clutch variants of the Seltos 2023 could cost between Rs. 12.50 lakh and Rs. 18.0 lakh. Meanwhile, the 3 diesel-automatic variants of the Seltos facelift could cost Rs. 18.0 lakh, Rs. 19.75 lakh and Rs. 20.0 lakh.

Why Do You Think The Diesel Variants Could Cost Same As Turbo Petrol Variants?

Once again, I have 2 reasons for this:

  1. More Powerful: The new 1.5L turbo petrol engine is more powerful than the diesel engine while offering about the same torque as the diesel engine. So, the only reason to still pick the diesel engine would be better fuel efficiency.
  2. Maintaining Relevance: While the Seltos is one of the few C-segment SUVs to offer a diesel engine, they need to achieve enough sales to justify keeping it in production. A reasonable price (compared to the turbo petrol engine) gives them enough volume to keep addressing the needs of high-mileage customers.

How Could The HTK Plus Turbo Petrol-Auto Clutch Of Seltos 2023 Cost Less Than Diesel-Auto Clutch?

One word: Sunroof.

The current HTK Plus diesel variant gets a sunroof, while the same variant in the Seltos facelift won’t get this feature. The only way to get a sunroof in the HTK Plus variant is to buy the turbo petrol ACMT variant. Moreover, it’s a HTK Plus turbo petrol’s larger panoramic sunroof, while the diesel-ACMT engine doesn’t get any kind of sunroof at all.

How Could The HTK Plus Diesel Variant Of The 2023 Seltos Be Cheaper Than Before?

Again, one word: Sunroof. The HTK Plus diesel currently gets sunroof while in the Seltos facelift, this feature is missing.

The X-Line Was Earlier A 30,000-Rupee Upgrade. Why Should It Cost Rs. 25,000 After The Update?

In the older Seltos, the X-Line variant added cosmetic features over the GTX Plus. The most important ones were larger alloy wheel size and a matte grey exterior colour.

This time around, even the GTX Plus gets the 18-inch alloys. So, it isn’t an upgrade for X-Line buyers. Besides the matte grey colour, the X-Line variant of the new Seltos 2023 offers a head-up display, which was earlier part of the GTX Plus. So, a Rs. 25,000 price gap seems reasonable against the Rs. 30,000 price difference between the older GTX Plus and X-Line variants of the Seltos.
