New Delhi. The month of October 2024 proved to be very special for the Indian automobile sector. Major automobile manufacturers recorded record breaking sales figures this month due to festivals. Let us know which company recorded how much sales and who was ahead of whom.

Maruti Suzuki India recorded its highest ever monthly sales in October 2024. The company sold a total of 2,06,434 units, which included 1,63,130 units in the domestic market, 10,136 units to other OEMs, and 33,168 units in exports.

How were the sales of Hyundai, Mahindra and Tata Motors?
Hyundai Motor India sold a total of 70,078 units in October, which is its third best performance. This includes 55,568 units in the domestic market and 14,510 units exported, which is 2 percent more than October last year. Specifically, the company's exports recorded an increase of 6.7 percent.

Mahindra & Mahindra also recorded its highest ever sales in the SUV segment in October 2024. The company sold 54,504 units in the domestic market, which shows a growth of 25 percent year on year. Mahindra's total vehicle sales reached 96,648 units, which also includes exports. The company achieved growth of 20 percent on an annual basis.

Unlike other companies, Tata Motors faced a mild decline in October. The company's sales in the domestic passenger vehicle segment stood at 48,131 units, which is 0.42 percent less as compared to the same month last year.

Kia and Toyota also registered growth
Kia India sold 28,545 units in October 2024, which is 30 percent more than last year. The recently launched Carnival Limousine Plus model caught the attention of customers, and 54 customers purchased it on the occasion of Diwali. There was also good demand for Kia's exports and 2,042 units were sent abroad.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor sold total sales of 30,845 units in October, which is 41 percent more than last year. 28,138 units were sold in the domestic market and 2,707 units were exported. Encouraging growth was seen in the sales of all the models of the company.

MG Motor India's contribution to NEV segment
JSW MG Motor India sold 7,045 units in October 2024, of which New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) contributed more than 70 percent. The recently launched electric crossover Windsor performed brilliantly and sold 3,116 units in the first month.

23% decline in Honda Cars India sales
On the other hand, Honda Cars India faced a decline in sales this month. The company's total sales were 10,080 units, which is 23 percent less as compared to October last year. 5,546 units were sold in the domestic market, which is a decline of 41 percent. However, exports improved and 4,534 units were exported, which is 23.1 percent more than October last year.

Hyundai stock goes beyond market dynamics to shed light on future India plans

Hyundai Motor India made its debut on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on Tuesday. The largest public offering in the history of the country, shares closed that day 1,820, down from the listing at 1,931 per share. But for a company that has called India home for nearly three decades, estimating the starting fare on D-Street may be like jumping the proverbial gun.

And this potential long-term value can probably be estimated from Hyundai's mega plans for the Indian car market.

Hyundai will increase production capacity

Hyundai officially started its India journey with a massive plant near Chennai. Operations here began in September 1998 and over the next several years, popular models such as the Santro, i10 and Xcent rolled off the manufacturing lines. Sriperumbudur The facility still remains the largest manufacturing center for the company, serving as a manufacturing base for both domestic and overseas markets.

The Santro Xing model took Hyundai to great heights in the past. Its present is all about SUVs but the future will depend on how well the EV game is played.

But to head off growing competition, the country's second-largest carmaker (after Maruti Suzuki) also acquired a facility in Talegaon, near Pune, which was previously owned by General Motors. Hyundai is looking to increase its production capacity by 30 percent from the current level by 2028. Garg says this will allow the company to grow at a faster pace than the overall industry while striking a balance between growth, profitability and market share.

Hyundai's fortunes in its early India years were driven by the popularity of its smaller models like the Santro and i10. Over the past decade or so, the performance of the Creta and Venue models has underlined how the company has understood the changing preference towards SUV body types. Garg says that SUV models contribute about 68 percent to Hyundai's total sales in the country.

But relying on body type alone may not be enough in the changing world of the Indian and global automotive landscape. And Hyundai is aware of the changes the electric movement is bringing.

Currently, Hyundai is a marginal player in the Indian electric vehicle (EV) sector, offering the capable but premium Ioniq 5. Tata Motors, a formidable rival, has a number of recently launched models ranging from the Tiago EV to the Nexon EV and more. Curvav e.v. These models can be priced anywhere 8 lakh more 22 lakh (ex-showroom), and cut across different body types.

But the fight continues with Hyundai confirming the launch of the Creta EV in 2025. After this, four more EV models will be launched by 2030. While critics may argue that the Koreans are late to the game, Hyundai is not willing to leave any stone unturned. And while the EV revolution is well and truly underway in India, it is not yet driven by four-wheelers but instead by two-wheelers.

Is localization the real mantra?

Hyundai is one of the largest car manufacturers in the country and is also the largest car exporter from here. Its offerings mostly come feature-loaded which top the priority list of potential customers. Local manufacturing has helped in this regard but will the same formula work for the Hyundai EV?

The company plans to set up a battery plant in Chennai at a cost of approximately Rs 700 crore with the stated aim of localizing battery packs to wage a price war against more established EV players in the market. The plant will initially have a capacity of 75,000 battery packs per year and this figure is likely to increase further.

On paper, Hyundai is committed to playing stronger than ever in India. Perhaps, there is also tacit acceptance of growing rivalry. But with ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) models as well as upcoming mass-market EVs, the company is bracing itself for a major strike. And the ultimate fate of Hyundai's shares will directly depend on this.

Hyundai Motor India has received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for a $3 billion initial public offering (IPO) and is all set for a launch in October. All eyes are on what could be India’s biggest IPO ever, possibly surpassing Life India Insurance’s (LIC) $2.7 billion listing in 2022.

Hyundai Motor India had filed a draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) with SEBI in the month of June, targeting a valuation of around $18 billion to $20 billion. “The offer is an offer for sale of up to 142,194,700 equity shares of face value Rs. “The sale of 10 per cent of equity shares by the promoter selling shareholder each will be done and the benefits of listing of equity shares will be received on the stock exchanges. Further, our Company expects that the listing of equity shares will enhance our visibility and brand image and will provide liquidity and public market for equity shares in India,” DHRP said.

According to a Hindustan Times report, Hyundai Motor India is being advised by Citi, HSBC Securities, JP Morgan, Kotak Mahindra Capital and Morgan Stanley. Law firm Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas is the counsel for the company.

A look at the journey of Hyundai India

Hyundai Motor India Limited or HMIL is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company of South Korea. HMIL was established in 1996 at a time when only a few companies were present in the Indian car market – Maruti Suzuki, Hindustan, Premier, Tata Motors and Mahindra.

Despite being relatively unknown in a very small market at the time, HMIL gained a strong foothold by setting up a factory in Tamil Nadu and targeting the small car segment, rolling out the Santro, launched in September 1998. The success of this model was such that it established HMIL as the second largest car manufacturer in the country.

Over the years, Hyundai has become the country's largest car exporter and has diversified its portfolio for the domestic market. So even though cars like the Santro, i10 and Xcent are no longer available, the focus is on SUVs.

The company's current portfolio in India ranges from the Grand i10 NIOS, Aura sedan and i20 hatchback to the Alcazar, Tucson and the all-electric Ioniq 5. However, the Hyundai Creta is the company's best-selling model and dominates the mid-size SUV space. First launched in 2015, the Creta has over 1.1 million units on Indian roads.

Hyundai Creta N Line is all set for its official India launch on March 11. The Creta N Line from Hyundai will be the company’s third N Line model, after i20 and Venue. The N Line, essentially, refers to models that are sportier versions of the original model with several visual enhancements on the inside as well as outer body while having minor technical updates as well.

HT Auto has learnt that Hyundai Creta N Line will be offered in two trims – N8 and N10, and with only the 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine that was introduced in the 2024 Creta. This engine is paired with both a manual gearbox as well as a DCT unit. The Creta N Line colour options include three monotone shades – White, Black and Grey Matte, as well as three dual-tone hues – Blue with Black roof, Grey with Black roof and White with Black roof.

How to book a Hyundai Creta N Line?

Hyundai opened bookings for Creta N Line from Thursday onwards and there are two ways to reserve a unit. The first is by simply walking into any company-authorised dealership in the country and paying a reservation amount of 25,000 which is refundable if the booking is cancelled.

 

The other option is to make a booking online. An interested customer can follow the steps below:

  1. Log on to Hyundai Motor India’s Click2Buy online platform.
  2. Choose the model. In this particular case, it would be the Creta N Line. Next select the fuel type which in this case, would be petrol only.
  3. Next, select one from the eight available variants of Hyundai Creta N Line. Follow up by opting for the body colour option.
  4. Now comes the most important part about selecting the preferred dealership. For this, select your state, city and the dealer name. The dealer name, on obvious lines, usually is the one closest to your location.
  5. Click on ‘Proceed’ and complete the transaction for the ₹25,000 that is charged as the token booking amount.

Do note that there is a likely waiting period of six to eight weeks that is expected on delivery of Hyundai Creta N Line from the date of launch and then from the date of bookings.

This is Hyundai’s second donation to the state government after the previous contribution of 3 crore made in the immediate aftermath of the cyclone. The company says it is already working with the government authorities to distribute essential relief kits comprising dry rations, tarpaulin, bedsheets and mats in districts such as Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu.

Commenting on the additional contribution, Un Soo Kim, MD & CEO – Hyundai Motor India, said, “Tamil Nadu, our home state, has faced the brunt of Cyclone Michaung, and the aftermath has left many in distress. The resilience and unity displayed by the people of Tamil Nadu in the face of adversity are truly inspiring. To contribute tangibly to the recovery efforts, Hyundai Motor India Foundation has extended an additional fund of INR 2 crore to Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority, which will be utilized to provide necessary flood relief and support for the affected communities.”

Tamil Nadu has been home to Hyundai Motor India since the South Korean brand arrived in India in 1998. The company operates three plants located in Sriperumbudur that produce cars for domestic and export markets.

The automaker also revealed a dedicated medical camp will be established to address the immediate medical needs. Hyundai also plans to offer special counselling sessions to the affected people, while undertaking village cleaning initiatives to address the post-cyclone sanitation challenges.

Hyundai Motor India on Friday stated that it is looking to close the calendar year 2023 with a personal best domestic sales milestone of six lakh units. The previous best of 5.5 lakh units was achieved in calendar year 2022.

Hyundai Exter has received over one lakh orders since its launch.

Underlining the success of new models launched this year – Ioniq 5 electric vehicle and Exter sub-compact SUV, Hyundai highlighted that it has enhanced production capacity at its plant in Tamil Nadu by 50,000 units to 820,000 units. This number is a combination of units manufactured for both the domestic as well as overseas markets. This combined figure is also eyeing a new personal best for the Korean brand in India, at 7.60 lakh, up from the previous best of 7.10 lakh achieved in 2018.

While the likes of the Venue, Creta and the updated Verna remain strong performers for Hyundai in India, the company specifically points to Exter which was launched in June and has received over one lakh orders since.

Hyundai has now completed 27 years in India and has managed to increase its share in the global Hyundai sales pie, from 15.6 per cent in 2019 to 18.6 per cent in 2023 (January-September). The company officials are now targeting a 20 per cent share in the times to come.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) has launched the updated i20 N Line facelift in the country bringing substantial updates to the sporty hatchback. The new Hyundai i20 N Line facelift is priced from 9.99 lakh for the manual, 20,00 cheaper than the older version, while going up to 12.32 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top-spec DCT automatic N8 trim. The i20 N Line now exclusively gets the 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine, which was recently discontinued on the standard i20 earlier this year.

Power on the new Hyundai i20 N Line comes from the familiar 1.0-litre Kappa Turbo GDi petrol engine tuned for 118 bhp and 172 Nm of peak torque. The motor is paired with a new 6-speed manual transmission and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) that’s now available in both N6 and N8 trims. The IMT unit has been given a miss this time in favour of a proper manual, which should appeal to enthusiasts, and also brings a lower asking price on the model.

Visual changes include the revised grille and headlamps on the i20 N Line inspired by the recently updated standard i20 hatchback. The new LED headlamps also sport a new signature LED DRL design. The bumpers have been revised as well, while the rear gets minimal changes. The cabin gets black interiors with contrast red inserts for a sporty look. On the safety front, the 2023 Hyundai i20 N Line packs 35 standard features including six airbags, ESC, Hill Assist Control (HAC), Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Highline. You also get disc brakes for all four wheels and automatic headlamps as part of the standard kit, along with three-point seatbelt and seatbelt reminders for all seats. Furthermore, the sporty hatchback comes with 40 additional safety features including a burglar alarm, Emergency Stop Signal, rear parking camera and headlamp escort function.

In related news, Hyundai India recently announced its decision to acquire General Motors’ Talegaon facility in Maharashtra. The company signed an Asset Purchase Agreement (APA) in August this year. The new facility will see a major revamp in order to produce cars with a significant capacity expansion planned taking the installed capacity from the current 130,000 units per annum.

Hyundai plans to increase its annual production from India to 10 lakh units with the new facility. Hyundai has already announced a commitment of 5,000 crore to the state over the next five years with production slated to commence in 2025. The new facility is expected to create about 4,500 direct and indirect employment opportunities once it begins operations.

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has announced that they have received more than 50,000 bookings for the Exter. Bookings grew from 10,000 to 50,000 in just 30 days of launch. Hyundai has also revealed that more than one-third of the bookings are for the AMT variants. Hyundai Exter’s main rival is the Tata Punch. The Exter is currently priced between 6 lakh and 10 lakh. Both prices are ex-showroom and introductory.

The Exter is being sold in seven variants. There is EX, EX(O), S, S(O), SX, SX(O) and SX(O) Connect. Hyundai Exter is offered with a 3-year (unlimited kilometres warranty) along with an option of 7 years of extended warranty. The micro SUV is available with 6 Monotone and 3 Dual tone exterior colour options.

The Exter really made a mark in the market by offering several segment-first features. It comes with footwell lighting, metal pedals, a shark-fin antenna, a smart electric sunroof, a dashcam with dual cameras, a wireless charger, rear AC vents, premium floor mats, paddle shifters, on-board navigation and support for multiple languages.

Powering the Exter is a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine that is doing duty on other Hyundai models. It produces 81.86 bhp of max power and 113.8 Nm of peak torque. While running on CNG, these figures are reduced to 68 bhp and 95.2 Nm. The max power arrives at 6,000 rpm while the peak torque output arrives at 4,000 rpm.

The Petrol powertrain comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT. The CNG powertrain only gets a 5-speed manual gearbox. The engine is quite smooth and refined. Moreover, the manual gearbox also slots in with a positive feel and while the AMT gearbox shifts with a minimal head nod, making it one of the best AMTs in the market. Interestingly, the Exter AMT is also offered with paddle shifters.
