Hyundai started hope for cancer with IIT Madras to promote pediatric cancer care

Hyundai Motor India Foundation has participated with IIT Madras to initiate an initiative of 56 crores to increase pediatric cancer care in India.

Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF), Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) CSR Arm, in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), has launched 'Hyundai Hope for Cancer', which aims to improve children's cancerful care in India. A supported by one 56-crores social impact investment from HMIF, this multi-year-old program has been anchored by the newly installed Hyundai Center for Cancer Genomics.

Located in the main campus of IIT Madras in Chennai, the center will have the facility of India's first community-based cancer tissue biobank. This feature is designed to enable advanced genomic research in pediatric leukemia and lymphoma. By identifying genetic mutations through genomic sequencing, the Center aims to manufacture national childhood cancer genome database and enable more personal treatment protocols. It will also serve as a collaborative hub for physicians, researchers, pharmaceutical experts, and International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) and WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

Extensive research:

As part of its mandate, the Hyundai Center for Cancer Genomics aims to collect and sequin 1,600 samples, provides free treatment to 30–50 children, and trains 100 technicians in genomics. HMIF has additionally installed a dedicated 3-crore cancer care funds to ensure that economically disadvantaged families can use timely treatment.

In the next four years, the program will organize 225 awareness and screening camps in Tamil Nadu, Haryana and Maharashtra, target 1.27 lakh persons and manage HPV vaccination to 5,000 girls.

Cyclone Michaung: Hyundai donates additional ₹2 crore to Tamil Nadu State

This is Hyundai’s second donation to the state government after the previous contribution of 3 crore made in the immediate aftermath of the cyclone. The company says it is already working with the government authorities to distribute essential relief kits comprising dry rations, tarpaulin, bedsheets and mats in districts such as Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu.

Commenting on the additional contribution, Un Soo Kim, MD & CEO – Hyundai Motor India, said, “Tamil Nadu, our home state, has faced the brunt of Cyclone Michaung, and the aftermath has left many in distress. The resilience and unity displayed by the people of Tamil Nadu in the face of adversity are truly inspiring. To contribute tangibly to the recovery efforts, Hyundai Motor India Foundation has extended an additional fund of INR 2 crore to Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority, which will be utilized to provide necessary flood relief and support for the affected communities.”

Tamil Nadu has been home to Hyundai Motor India since the South Korean brand arrived in India in 1998. The company operates three plants located in Sriperumbudur that produce cars for domestic and export markets.

The automaker also revealed a dedicated medical camp will be established to address the immediate medical needs. Hyundai also plans to offer special counselling sessions to the affected people, while undertaking village cleaning initiatives to address the post-cyclone sanitation challenges.
