Hyundai, Kia sales fall short of target in 2023, expect to make up in 2024

Hyundai, Kia sales fall short of target in 2023, expect to make up in 2024

Hyundai sold 6.02 lakh units in the domestic Indian market between January and December of 2023. Kia, its partner in global markets, also clocked 2.55

Hyundai and Kia will kickstart the year with the launch of Creta 2024 facelift SUV and Sonet 2024 facelift SUV. While Creta is Hyundai’s best-selling model in India, Sonet is Kia’s second best-seller after Seltos.

South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co and affiliate Kia Corp forecast on Wednesday that their combined global sales will rise about 2% in 2024, even as last year’s sales fell short of target.

The duo sold 7.3 million vehicles in 2023, about 3% less than their combined target of 7.52 million, largely due to a difficult economic environment, including rising interest rates and inflation that pushed vehicles out of the reach of some buyers. The companies said they would target global sales of 7.44 million vehicles this year.

“Hyundai plans to take a lead in electrification and focus on optimizing profitability by strengthening its global electric vehicle (EV) production infrastructure, establishing flexible business strategies to adapt to market changes, and reinforcing preemptive risk management capabilities,” Hyundai said in a statement.

Kia sold 3.09 million vehicles globally in 2023, posting a new annual global sales record, it said in a statement. Kia’s previous best yearly performance was in 2014, with sales of 3.04 million units.

Analysts said this year’s sales targets for the two companies appeared to be achievable, but that economic issues, including high interest rates, as well as rising incentives would have an impact on auto demand and profitability.

Hyundai is aiming for a 0.6% rise in annual global sales to 4.24 million vehicles, while Kia set its sales target at 3.2 million units, up about 4% from last year.

“It seems that Hyundai’s goal appears to be more conservative than Kia’s … Kia is set to launch new electric vehicles this year, but we need to factor in how the recent slowing growth of global EV sales would fold out,” said Shin Yoon-chul, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities.

Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung in his New Year address on Wednesday emphasized customer satisfaction and called for a corporate culture of “preparation” to make swift decisions.

“The best strategy is earning the full trust of our customers, not quickly following our competitors … In order to turn these external challenges into opportunities and achieve long-term sustainable growth, we must be prepared,” Chung said in the address.

Shares of Hyundai Motor and Kia closed down 3.3% and 3.9% respectively, versus a 2.3% fall in the benchmark KOSPI.

Updated Hyundai Creta to launch on January 16: What does it mean for segment?

The updated Hyundai Creta is ready and raring for its official launch in the Indian car market. But unlike in times before, the champion is now threatened by a longer list of very competent challengers.

Hyundai Creta has been the undisputed champion in the mid-size SUV space. But the Creta model available at present has not received any major update – barring special editions – in the past few years. It is a time period in which rivals have entered and carved out some space for themselves. While the crown may not have been under threat yet, the 2024 Creta is more than likely to extend its lead in the Indian automotive market.

First launched in 2015, Creta galvanised the mid-size SUV space which at that point in time had the likes of Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster. Both EcoSport and Duster have since disappeared, replaced by options like Kia Seltos, MG Hector, Tata Harrier, Mahindra Scorpio-N, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq. Each of these models are power players in their own right but Creta continues to sell by the truckloads and the updated version is likely to further prospects.

2024 Hyundai Creta launch

The update to Creta has been awaited for quite a long time. Once Kia drove out the updated Seltos earlier this year, it was only a matter of time before Hyundai fired back too.

Spy images of a camouflaged Creta have repeatedly surfaced in recent weeks as the SUV undergoes testing in India. What is evident from these is that the new 2024 Hyundai Creta will sport an updated grille and other minor design tweaks on the outside. In the cabin, the dashboard layout has been refreshed while the screens are likely to be updated too. There will also be dual-tone seats on offer while a 360-degree camera and ADAS technology are almost certain too.

In terms of engine options, Hyundai is likely to push out the model with three choices – 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol motor, 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol unit and a 1.5-litre CRDi diesel unit. There will also be multiple transmission choices.

2024 Hyundai Creta vs rivals

What is likely to hold the new Creta in good stead is the enormous popularity it has enjoyed for nearly a decade in the Indian market. Backed by Hyundai’s extensive sales and service network, the SUV could be the biggest blockbuster of 2024. But unlike previous times, the competition is red hot. The likes of Grand Vitara and Hyryder offer strong hybrid technology. The Seltos is still quite new and has been received well by potential buyers because of its catchy new styling and updated feature list. Taigun and Kushaq underline their safety credentials while Harrier has assumed an even more macho exterior style in its latest update. As for Scorpio-N, it continues to boast of a very solid road presence that is quite liked by those who prefer an SUV body type.

Year Ender 2023: Cars for India that passed GNCAP crash test with flying colours

India’s automobile industry is constantly evolving. People’s demands keep changing and manufacturers try to ensure that they are fulfilling the demands. The latest push in the industry has come in the form of safe vehicles. People are now well aware of the safety rating of the vehicles. What has helped in pushing safe vehicles is Global NCAP’s #safercarsforindia initiative. As part of this campaign, every year several cars that are being sold in India are crash-tested. This year also several cars were crash-tested and here are five cars that passed GNCAP tests with flying colours in 2023.

Tata Harrier and Safari SUVs have secured five star rating at the Global NCAP crash tests and Bharat NCAP becoming two of the safest cars in India.

Tata Safari and Harrier

Tata Motors was the first automobile manufacturer that really started the movement about safe cars in India with the Nexon. However, they took a long time to crash-test the Harrier and Safari. With the facelifts, the manufacturer finally sent the SUVs to Global NCAP for a crash test and they scored the highest rating in the crash test. Not only this, the Harrier and the Safari are also the first vehicles to be tested by Bharat NCAP. Both the SUVs are based on Land Rover’s Omegarc platform so it makes sense that both SUVs also share the same safety rating and features.

Hyundai Verna

Well, this came as a surprise to everyone. Hyundai Verna scored 5 stars in the Global NCAP crash test. It is the first made-in-India car from Hyundai to achieve five stars in the crash test. The new generation of Verna was launched in the Indian market this year and has been doing decent in terms of sales. The voluntary test for the Hyundai Verna was one of the last tests to be done by Global NCAP for India.

This is the same platform that is being used on the Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq which also scored 5 stars in a crash test.

Hyundai India is betting big on SUVs to boost its sales in 2023

Hyundai Motor India Ltd is on track to achieve more than 60 per cent of its total domestic sales from SUVs this year with models like Creta and Exter. Hyundai is betting big on models like Creta and Exter.

The Indian market has been witnessing a rapid surge in demand for SUVs and MPVs over the last few years. Several automakers present in India, including Hyundai, have been trying to encash this demand for SUVs. The automaker has launched the new Exter in India. Besides that, the Creta has been one of the consistently well-performing SUVs in India.

Speaking about the automaker’s strategy, Garg said that, with exports accelerating in the last three months, Hyundai is confident of sustaining its overseas shipments momentum despite concerns over the global geopolitical situation, while the brand is hopeful that SUVs will contribute to more than 60 per cent of total sales in the domestic market. “We will end up with more than 60 per cent at the end of the year which is what we said at the beginning of the year. We are now almost reaching there,” Garg reportedly said.

The Hyundai COO has said that SUV contribution to the automaker’s total passenger vehicle sales in India has moved up to 63 per cent in October. Also, in this financial year, between April and October, sales of its SUVs have been up by 59 per cent as against the industry SUV percentage of 48 per cent. “For us, the good thing has been that SUV contribution has moved to 63 per cent in October and year-to-date at 59 per cent as against industry SUV percentage of 48 per cent. So that has really helped us to outperform the industry in terms of January to October numbers,” he added.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) clocked a total sales of 68,728 units in October 2023 as compared to 58,006 units in the same month a year ago, registering a growth of 18.48 per cent. Hyundai Motor is gearing up to launch the facelift version of its popular hatchback i20 soon. The carmaker took to social media to tease the first look at the upcoming model ahead of its launch, which is expected to take place later this year. The new Hyundai i20 facelift model is likely to come with several updates in terms of its features. When launched, the 2023 i20 hatchback will renew its rivalry with the likes of Maruti Suzuki Baleno among others in the compact segment.

Hyundai Motor has teased the upcoming facelift version of the i20 hatchback which is expected to launch this festive season.

Hyundai i20 facelift hatchback is expected to come with several design changes on the outside. The new-look i20 has already been spotted testing a number of time on Indian roads. The spy shots hint that the front face of the i20 will be updated with new elements like the grille and LED headlight units. The side and rear profile of the hatchback is expected to remain largely similar to the outgoing version, except for the taillight design. The alloy design too may get minor updates.

The interior of the new i20 is also expected to come with additional features.Hyundai may introduce dashcam as a first-in segment feature in the i20 facelift. It could use the same dashcam that was introduced in Exter SUV earlier. Besides this, Hyundai may also add other features like an electrically adjustable sunroof, 360-degree camera, front parking sensors and a larger touchscreen infotainment system. The i20 already offers features like digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, cruise control, wireless charger and ambient lighting.

Hyundai is unlikely to make any changes under the hood. Expect the new i20 to come equipped with the same 1.2-litre petrol or the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit as options. The 1.2-litre unit is capable of generating 82 bhp of maximum power and 114.7 Nm of maximum torque. The turbocharged unit can churn out 118 bhp of power and 172 Nm of peak torque. The transmission job is handled by either a five-speed manual, an IVT or a seven-speed DCT gearbox.

The current generation i20 hatchback is priced between 7.46 lakh and 11.88 lakh (ex-showroom). Expect the new facelift version to cost slightly more than that.

Maruti Suzuki aims to make 40 lakh cars annually by 2031, focusing on new tech

Maruti Suzuki aims to make 40 lakh cars annually by 2031, focusing on new tech

Maruti Suzuki plans to invest a whopping 45,000 crore to double its annual production capacity in the next eight years, reported PTI. Maruti Suzuki India’s chairman RC Bhargava reportedly said on Tuesday that the automaker plans to produce 40 lakh cars annually by 2031 with the influx of investment it is making to double production capacity. This comes at a juncture when the Indian auto industry like the rest of the global automobile industry is witnessing the introduction of new technologies and Maruti Suzuki is aiming to take a lead in that.

By: HT Auto Desk
| Updated on: 29 Aug 2023, 15:25 PM

Besides focusing on doubling production capacity to 40 lakh cars annually by 2031, Maruti Suzuki is also emphasising on development of new technology for its vehicle fleet.

Despite being the largest car brand in India, Maruti Suzuki is yet to penetrate the EV segment, while Tata Motors, Hyundai, MG Motors and Mahindra along with several luxury car brands have already launched their respective products in the country’s electric car segment. Speaking about this, Bhargava accepted that the company is late in the segment but believes that it will not impact the brand by damaging its ability to get an adequate market share in the space.

He also said that Maruti Suzuki aims to launch six electric cars by the decade’s end, which would give it a strong position in the market. “Yes, we are behind some companies in launching EV but that does not mean that we are late in the market or that when we are coming in 2024-25, we will have in any way damaged our ability to get an adequate market share,” he added.

As Maruti Suzuki is thriving towards greener and cleaner powertrain technology, it will increasingly focus on a wide range of new technologies including electric vehicles, hybrids, CNG, ethanol and compressed biogas in the coming days, said Bhargava. Speaking about these technologies, he also said that it is difficult to predict what will happen in the next eight to ten years.

Bhargava also said that Maruti Suzuki has reached the 20 lakh units annual production and sales milestone. Now, it is aiming to double that figure by reaching the 40 lakh units annual production and sales milestone, he said. The plan will be part of the automaker’s ‘Maruti 3.0’ strategy, under which the company is targeting to add another 20 lakh units of production capacity with about 28 different car models in the market by FY 2030-31.

The Maruti Suzuki chairman said that the era ahead is going to be a very uncertain and challenging one. “The era before us is going to be a very uncertain era, a very challenging era. Putting up these two million cars itself will cost us something close to 45,000 crore. It depends how inflation goes but at the moment we estimate the cost about 45,000 crore for two million cars,” Bhargava said.

Hyundai stares at big wage war, strike in home base. How it could affect sales

Hyundai stares at big wage war, strike in home base. How it could affect sales

Hyundai Motor is facing a crisis in its home base of South Korea after a government organisation gave the green signal for unionized workers of the carmaker to go on strike. The protesting workers have been demanding a hike in wages and for the retirement age to be increased.

South Korea’s National Labor Relations Commission has permitted for Hyundai’s unionized workers to go on strike. Reuters, citing local reports, highlighted that these workers are now planning to gather and chart out their next course of action even though talks with the company management will continue as well.

The protesting workers had previously threatened to walk out unless Hyundai management agreed to their twin demands of wage increase and extension on the retirement age. The talks thus far has led to nothing significant.

Wage war at Hyundai: Potential fallout

If the unionized workers do go ahead with a general strike, this would turn out to be the first wage-related conflict at Hyundai in South Korea in five years. And it could not come at a worse time for the Korean car giant as it has been looking at ramping up production that has already taken a hit due to supply-related shortages.

A strike in the times to come could wreck havoc with delivery timelines of Hyundai models to the South Korean buyers, potentially ushering these customers towards rival brands. This especially so because the current inventories are rather minuscule.

It is further reported that Hyundai may be facing an operational loss of 1 trillion won ($755.37 million) if the strike does go ahead.

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has announced that they have received more than 50,000 bookings for the Exter. Bookings grew from 10,000 to 50,000 in just 30 days of launch. Both prices are ex-showroom and introductory.

Hyundai Exter is offered with a 3-year (unlimited kilometres warranty) along with an option of 7 years of extended warranty. It comes with footwell lighting, metal pedals, a shark-fin antenna, a smart electric sunroof, a dashcam with dual cameras, a wireless charger, rear AC vents, premium floor mats, paddle shifters, on-board navigation and support for multiple languages.

While running on CNG, these figures are reduced to 68 bhp and 95.2 Nm. The max power arrives at 6,000 rpm while the peak torque output arrives at 4,000 rpm.

The Petrol powertrain comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT. The CNG powertrain only gets a 5-speed manual gearbox. The engine is quite smooth and refined. Moreover, the manual gearbox also slots in with a positive feel and while the AMT gearbox shifts with a minimal head nod, making it one of the best AMTs in the market. Interestingly, the Exter AMT is also offered with paddle shifters.
