New Delhi. The Indian passenger vehicle market witnessed a tremendous surge in September 2025, according to industry data, with Tata Nexon emerging as the best-selling car. This surge in the market was due to the Navratri festival and the transition to GST 2.0, which boosted dealership activities across the country and continued footfall in showrooms.
Tata Nexon took the top spot in the charts with sales of 22,573 units, followed by Maruti Suzuki Dezire with 20,038 units to maintain its lead as the favorite in the sedan segment. Hyundai's Creta, one of the most popular SUVs, grabbed the third position with 18,861 units, while Mahindra's Scorpio maintained the strong demand for SUVs with sales of 18,372 units.

Demand for SUVs and hatchbacks
Compact SUVs and hatchbacks continued to drive volumes for automakers. Tata's Punch recorded sales of 15,891 units, becoming the brand's second best-selling model. Maruti Suzuki showed its strength in the market with its four models in the top 10. This includes Swift (15,547 units), WagonR (15,388 units), Frontex (13,767 units), and Baleno (13,173 units). Completing the top 10, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga sold 12,115 units, reflecting the demand in the MPV segment.
Retail sales of vehicles increased
FADA said total vehicle retails grew by 5.22% year-on-year, with two-wheelers, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and tractors all registering positive growth. Passenger vehicles, in particular, saw an impressive growth of +34.8% as buyers upgraded to higher variants and premium models to take advantage of lower GST rates and festivals.
Strong growth in September
The last week of September i.e. Navratri saw a significant growth in footfall at dealerships and vehicle deliveries, which proved to be a strong month for India's auto retail sector. Analysts believe that this sector is going to see further growth in the festive season.
