Inside the Stellantis plant: How India became a major powertrain base for the group

The early focus on capacity building, machining, supplier development, quality and a culture of practical technical training shaped the backbone of its Indian operations. The Hosur Powertrain Plant, operational since 2017, stands today as the most visible expression of that strategy, emerging as a key node in the group's global engine and transmission network.

A long and layered legacy of India

Stellantis' footprint in India is shaped by a long manufacturing lineage that dates back to the Fiat era, when powertrain production formed the backbone of the company's local operations. Fiat's engine programs helped establish one of India's early high-precision supplier bases, supported by dedicated machining lines, training systems and long-term component partnerships. This ensured continuity as the organization transitioned from Fiat to FCA and later Stellantis, with the powertrain remaining the most stable element of its Indian strategy.

Through this legacy, India evolved as a sustainable manufacturing contributor to global engine and transmission programs. The experience gained over decades, including supplier relationships and workforce capacity, created the conditions for Stellantis to develop India as a key node within its international powertrain network. The Hosur plant, which came online in 2017, was a direct extension of this approach, designed from the beginning to meet both domestic and export demands while working in accordance with global quality, testing and process standards.

A powertrain complex built for scale

Spread over 110 acres, the Hosur facility produces three engine families – 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol, 1.2-litre turbo-petrol (Gen-3) and 2.0-litre SDE diesel, along with multiple manual transmission variants (6-speed and 5-speed families). About 95 percent of production is exported, supplying more than 20 markets in Europe, Türkiye, the Middle East and Latin America. Overall, Hosur's engine and gearbox lines account for about 5 percent of Stellantis' global powertrain volumes.

plant comes out closer 350,000 transmissions per year, a number that says as much about scale as it does how much work gets done under one roof. Most of the machining and assembly is done in-house, supported by the vendor ecosystem that has developed with the factory. 300 engine parts and 120 gearbox components come from suppliers that have been integrated into the operation over time. It's this depth that helps the plant maintain high localization: the engine shop runs a 60:40 local-to-import ratio, and the gearbox line is not far away.

Operational Efficiency and Process Discipline

The way the lines have been set up also reflects a very Indian balance between efficiency and practicality. Stellantis has opted for a semi-automated layout, not fully manual, not fully robotic, which gives operators room for customization while maintaining the rhythm of automation. The result is a line that runs 50-60 percent more efficiently than a fully manual setup, yet remains faster to reconfigure than the fully automated European systems against which it is benchmarked. Lead times tell the same story: Gearbox assembly in Hosur is typically completed four to five months faster than at many of the company's other global plants, which is a sobering indicator of how mature the processes here have become.

Testing capacity has expanded in line with production requirements. Stellantis was the first company to adopt cold-test technology in India, developing its system in just two months, whereas these projects elsewhere typically require five months. Today, 60 percent of engines undergo cold testing, with the remaining units validated through mandatory hot tests.

Workforce, skills and local impact

Hosur's workforce profile reflects the plant's dual role as a high-precision manufacturing site and a regional employer. The site directly employs around 1,500 people drawn from 16 Indian states, with women comprising around 18 per cent of the workforce. Stellantis estimates that the plant supports more than 5,000 direct and indirect jobs in the surrounding economy through supplier activity, logistics and services.

Skill development is inherent in the Hosur model. The in-house training institute has recorded a 95 percent first attempt pass rate for trainees; New recruits receive two weeks of structured on-the-job and classroom training, while team leaders undergo a three-month development track.

The plant currently operates three shifts with 33 trained team leaders (approximately 11 per shift), and provides over 150 hours of training per operator per year. These investments are aimed at building stable shop-floor competency that can meet global quality standards and support increasingly complex verification tasks.

Beyond employment, the plant runs community and CSR programs focused on STEM education, school infrastructure and road safety, actions the company takes as part of its local integration strategy.

Stellantis' manufacturing plant in Hosur claims to get 92 percent of its energy from renewable energy, 74 percent from wind and 18 percent from solar.

Sustainability integrated into operations

Sustainability is a core operating principle. The rooftop solar system covers all buildings except the administrative block; The site gets 92 percent of its energy from renewable energy, 74 percent Air and 18 percent solar. With 2 MW of solar PV installed and the deployment of another 1.3 MW, the plant will save 10,622 tonnes of CO₂ in 2024, equivalent to planting 136,000 trees. The 2025 target is to save more than 14,000 tonnes of CO₂ (equivalent to approximately 180,000 trees). The plant's gearbox operation already has the lowest energy consumption per unit recorded within the Stellantis network; The engine line is in second place, with plans to reach benchmark status by 2025.

Part of the global powertrain network

Stellantis operates 44 engine and transmission plants worldwide. Within that network, Hosur's mix of scale, localization and technical capability makes it one of the group's more competitive sites. Hosur's capacity is about 45-50 per cent of that of many plants elsewhere, indicating its larger role given the breadth of the group's footprint, a company briefing said.

Hosur's production accounts for about 5 percent of Stellantis' global powertrain volumes for the engine and gearbox families it produces. The stake is significant given the company's multi-brand portfolio and declining number of plants dedicated to ICE as the group reallocates resources to electrification in other areas.

Platform, India Made IP and Export

India's engineering footprint extends beyond manufacturing. The smart car platform developed in India is the basis of Citroen C3, eC3, air cross and this basaltIt is exported to many markets where the platform's balance of cost and convenience is suitable. Additionally, powertrain and gearbox supplies from India also power Stellantis van platform vehicles as well as several global models based on STLA Small and STLA Medium platform cars. Many components for the STLA Large EV architecture are also being sourced from Indian suppliers, indicating a two-way flow of capacity from India to Stellantis' EV ambitions.

Export performance is a central issue of the Hosur story: largely from the current export contribution Rs 4,000 crore, Stellantis' target 10,000 crore by 2026, with Hosur as a major contributor to that growth.

Retail Strategy and Market Positioning

On the business front, Stellantis is building its retail network in India in parallel with manufacturing growth. Citroen aims to reach 80 to 130 touchpoints in FY26, Jeep aims for around 78, and the group is expanding service reach to 135 centers by adding 7-8 touchpoints per month. The combined network currently covers 69 percent of the addressable market.

A plant built for today, designed for tomorrow

While Hosur holds a central role in ICE production, the facility and India's supplier base are being oriented towards a multi-energy future. Stellantis is running hydrogen pilots in Europe and assessing how hydrogen-optimized combustion and hybrid architectures can be integrated into existing production flows when market economics and infrastructure allow. In practice, the plant's process discipline, training system and engineering presence make it a suitable pivot point should Stellantis decide to expand alternative powertrains from India.

Hosur is more than a factory: it is a working link in a global production and engineering system. By producing multiple engine families and transmission variants in line with global standards, maintaining high localization, investing in workforce training and delivering measurable sustainability benefits, the plant strengthens India's role in Stellantis' industrial map. As the automotive sector moves towards a multi-speed transition, Hosur provides the Group with operational continuity and flexible capabilities, qualities that will matter during the next stages of powertrain development.

This special edition is based on the existing top-spec Model S variant and has been given some cosmetic updates that make the SUV even more attractive. Thanks to these visual additions, the Track Edition is priced Rs 25,000 more than the Model S. There has been no change in its features or powertrain. Like any other Jeep special edition model, the new Compass Track Edition gets several cosmetic changes like 'TRACK' lettering on the hood deckle, piano black accents on the grille and badges, and its own signature Track Edition badging, which makes it even sportier and more special. The new 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels have been given a tech gray finish which gives it a different look. Although no new colors have been added to the body color palette, the Track Edition can be chosen from the existing three color options: Pearl White, Brilliant Black and Exotica Red.

Interview: Jeep India reveals product strategy & what an electric future holds

In the nearly decade-long presence in India, Jeep SUV models have competed in both the mass-market space as well as the luxury space. But the performance in terms of sheer volumes has not been much to write home about. So what makes the Jeep brand tick in a country which now has the world’s third-largest vehicle market in terms of sales? Is the business about number of units sold or is it about establishing and maintaining a premium image? And what does the future hold for a brand that prides in the rugged credentials of its offerings at a time when electric vehicles (EVs) are fast becoming a rage?

HT Auto recently caught up with Jeep India Brand Director Priyesh Kumar to get an inside view on the sidelines of the unveil event of the 2024 Jeep Wrangler. Here are excerpts from the interview:

HT Auto: What does the Wrangler brand mean to Jeep and to, specifically, customers here in India?

The latest Wrangler from Jeep gets subtle style updates on the outside, feature additions within and is powered by a 2.0-litre petrol motor.

Priyesh: Wrangler is a product which has been known for its off-roading (capabilities). But what’s going to happen maybe time to come is that Wrangler is going to be equally good for the on-roading. New features that are getting added, like ADAS, Nappa leather seats, better navigation screens, six airbags, all those things are also going to give you an equally good on-road experience.

HT Auto: Wrangler has always been a bad boy. So what you are saying is it will be a bad boy but now with a good heart?

Priyesh: To some extent, yes. It is a bit poetic but it is correct.

HT Auto: How much has the Indian car-buying audience evolved to the whole concept of adventure driving, and what does it mean for a brand like Jeep and a model like Wrangler?

Priyesh: When it comes to the evolution of Indian customers towards experiencing lifestyle products, and maybe off-roading-capable products, they (customers) are still evolving. To further promote it, we are doing a lot of things like Jeep Camps, Jeep Trails, where we invite our customers to actually experience the product.So what I am saying is that it (fondness for off-road driving) is gradually coming up and it will help us as a brand.

HT Auto: But then help me understand what does Jeep stand for as a brand. Because on one end of the spectrum, you have the Compass and then the Grand Cherokee on the other. So does Jeep want mass appeal or have an aspirational aura?

The newest version of the Grand Cherokee was launched in India in 2022. It sits on the top of the Jeep product pyramid in the country.

Priyesh: We are going to be more accessible to all segments of customers. The Compass, Meridian, Wrangler or the Grand Cherokee are all premium products, and we will maintain that premium-ness. Going forward, it will be a lifestyle statement as well. But as I mentioned, the customer base itself is evolving, the customer thought process is evolving. So that’s going to definitely help Jeep as a brand.

HT Auto: But let’s be honest, are you also chasing volumes because frankly, cars like Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, as capable as they are and as much as they may carry the aspirational tag, won’t bring in the numbers and volumes (in terms of sales)?

Priyesh: I will not say that we are not in that number game. But we are not going to compromise on the quality of customers or the profile of customers which we are looking at.What we’re looking at is to expand that base altogether. Network expansion is on the cards so our cars are more accessible. A key pillar of our strategy is going to be corporate sales. So, there are a couple of things which we are looking at.

HT Auto: So volume, but not in the actual definition of volume?

Priyesh: We are not going to be in that rat race. But yes, we have also aspirations and we will pick up the volumes with all the things which I mentioned to you.

HT Auto: Jeep has products in the global markets that are positioned below or at par with Compass in India. Why not explore the idea of getting some of those products , like the Renegade for example, to the Indian market?

Jeep Renegade sold in several foreign markets has smaller exterior proportions than the Jeep Compass.

Priyesh: We are evaluating everything to be very honest with you. It’s not being limited to, let’s say, Compass on one side and Grand Cherokee. We are also evaluating the ever-changing customer expectations and market dynamics. On the basis of these, we will come with those products, whatever we find is appropriate for the market and makes business case for us.

HT Auto: Jeep CEO Antonio Fulani recently said that in India, a fair degree of localisation has been achieved but also hinted that more is required. You have 500 suppliers in the country. In your view, what more can possibly be done to bring down costs?

Priyesh: We have around 70 per cent localisation and are looking to take it to 90 per cent. If we have to grow, we can’t be limiting ourselves to our current numbers. So localisation makes the overall ecosystem more friendly to the Indian market. And that’s what is one of the priorities we have.

HT Auto: Going back to the product portfolio, can you give us a look into what is next after the 2024 Wrangler?

Priyesh: So I will start with what we did recently. We launched the Compass Night Eagle special edition which is a fully loaded variant. Then obviously, now is time for the new Wrangler. Then we have the Meridian 2.0. Again, we are looking at which all features should be part of the Meridian so that it isaligned to the market. It has to be something which appeals (to buyers) and it has to maintain the core DNA of Jeep. So all those things are being evaluated, post that also we will have a couple of product launches. But at this point in time, I am not in a position to share that.

HT Auto: What about electrics and what does battery technology and adoption hold for a brand that is about lifestyle, about adventure, about off-roading like Jeep. How do you not just stay relevant but stay ahead of the curve?

Priyesh: Globally, we have also got electric vehicles. Going forward, there are going to be some big ones like Wagoneer S and Recon. So globally, we are already there. In the domestic market, we are still exploring which products suit the market here. We are closely monitoring customer expectations, government policies, infrastructure development and regulations. We are very serious about this and we will come out with an option soon.

Jeep India is all set to bring the updated Wrangler off-roader to the market on April 22, 2024. The Jeep Wrangler facelift made its global debut nearly a year ago and the SUV is all set to make its way to the Indian market with a comprehensive upgrade to its design and feature list. Here’s a look at what you can expect.

The Jeep Wrangler facelift will get an all-black with the trademark seven-slat design being slimmer than before. There are new alloy wheels, different wheel sizes and multiple roof options available globally. Jeep India will likely bring the soft top and hard top options to the Indian market.

2024 Jeep Wrangler
The 2024 Jeep Wrangler gets a new infotainment screen and repositioned AC vents, while most of the other controls remain unchanged

The cabin will also get subtle changes including the revised dashboard layout features a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and repositioned AC vents, which will be standard on all trims.

The Wrangler facelift will also get Jeep’s latest Uconnect 5 user interface bringing more connected tech to the off-roader. Furthermore, there will be the new Trails Offroad guide with 62 off-road trails incorporated into the system. Other upgrades include the 12-way electrically adjustable front seats, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a semi-digital instrument console, and more.

Power on the Jeep Wrangler facelift for India will come from the 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine tuned for 266 bhp and 400 Nm of peak torque, while paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The SUV will also get the Jeep Selec-Trac full-time Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) system. There won’t be a diesel engine for the Indian market.

The Wrangler is presently available in two variants – Unlimited and Rubicon – and we expect the same to continue on the facelifted model as well. The current version is priced between 62.65 lakh and 66.65 lakh (ex-showroom) respectively, and expect the new version to command a marginal premium over the same. The Jeep Wrangler will take on the Land Rover Defender in the luxury off-roader segment.

Year-end discounts are a great way to snatch a good deal on cars, especially with new model-year vehicles rolling in from January onwards. Do note that while the discounts do look sweet, they may erode some value of the car in resale later. You should also consider if the vehicle is due to a major upgrade in the new year and how long would it take for deliveries to begin before finalising a vehicle in the last few days of the calendar year.

On the mechanical front, the India-spec Jeep Wrangler is offered with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine tuned for 268 bhp and 400 Nm of peak torque. The motor is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The SUV gets the Select-Trac full-time 4WD system on the Unlimited variant, while the Rock-Trac 4WD system with front and rear locking differentials and an electronic sway bar disconnect is offered on the Rubicon trim.

The Wrangler also gets a heavy-duty suspension with gas shocks, 18-inch aluminium wheels with a full-size spare tyre, and more. The feature list is equally extensive with LED headlamps with DRLs, LED fog lamps, leather seats, steering wheel and gear knob, a 7-inch digital instrument console, an 8.4-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, steering wheel mounted control, dual-zone climate control and more.

Since the launch of the first Jeep Wrangler (YJ), the automaker went on to sell 630,000 units of the off-roader between 1987 and 1995. The Jeep Wrangler started life as a two-door model with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder and a 4.2-litre inline six-cylinder engine options. Over the years, the automaker went on to introduce the four-door version, which is sold globally as well including in India. The fifth-generation Wrangler will make its way to the Indian market at a later date.
