New Delhi. Mahindra & Mahindra is once again focusing on those SUVs which made a strong mark for it in the Indian market. The company is preparing major changes for its most popular models – Thar, Scorpio and XUV700. Electrification has been made central to Mahindra's long-term plans and recently the company launched the XEV 9S, which is the first 3-row electric SUV inspired by the XUV.e8 concept. Sitting close to the XEV 9e and BE 6 in the brand's EV portfolio, the XEV 9S carries forward the recognizable design language of the XUV700. XUV700 is ready for major changes even in models with internal combustion engine. Its new version will be launched next month with the name of XUV 7XO and its booking has already started.

no change in size
The size of the SUV will remain the same, but some important changes will be made in its exterior. The real change will be seen in its interiors, where Mahindra is designing a completely new dashboard, which will have a large triple-screen setup like the XEV 9S. Apart from this, cabin themes, trims and material quality will also be improved and many new features will be added.

Mahindra's lifestyle SUV
Thar is also going to step into the electric era. The electric version of the five-door Thar Rocks was shown through the Vision T concept, which retains the boxy design and powerful looks, but adds futuristic EV design elements. The new Thar EV built on NU_IQ architecture will have multiple battery pack options and dual-motor setup, which will provide four-wheel drive.

Mahindra Scorpio
There is going to be a big change in the Scorpio series also. Mahindra's Vision S concept gave a glimpse of a more premium and compact Scorpio N, which will be built away from the traditional ladder-frame construction. The upcoming Scorpio will be based on NU_IQ platform. Although it has been seen testing several times, the new compact Scorpio is expected to be launched only in late 2026 or early 2027. Meanwhile, the current Scorpio N will also get a mid-life update in the next few months, which will bring minor cosmetic changes and has already been spotted road testing.

Mahindra and Force
The competition between Mahindra Auto and Force Motors in the lifestyle SUV segment has been long ago. But it is clear that at present, Mahindra is a one -sided winner in this competition. The company is now stepping into the electric segment after selling Thar and Thar Rocks with petrol and diesel engines. Force Motors is also trying to make its place in the electric lifestyle SUV segment.

Waiting for official announcement

The company has not yet given any information about Gurkha EV, however, seeing the spy image, it is clear that the company has started testing Gurkha EV. It can be estimated that Force Motors is getting ready to compete with Mahindra, including an electric version of Thar. On August 15, Mahindra is preparing to showcase 4 new concept vehicles and one of them can be the Near Production version of Thar Electric.

Force Motors can develop an electric version of its Gurkha to compete with Mahindra's Future Electric Offerings. Looking at the test mule, we can see that it is fully visible without any chemoplas. If the company is actually developing the electric version of its already popular Gurkha, then there is less possibility of any change in the design in Gurkha EV. The newly unveiled Mahindra Thar.e concept is based on the automaker’s INGLO P1 EV platform instead of the ladder frame chassis that underpins the internal combustion engine-powered Thar SUV. This new platform is dedicated to electric vehicles and is claimed to enhance the rigidity of the vehicle as well as offering significantly higher safety for the occupants. Also, this platform claims to offer a long range for the EV, thanks to its capability to accommodate a large battery pack.

The Mahindra Thar.e electric SUV is expected to play a key role in the brand’s Born Electric range of electric cars that the auto company plans to introduce later this decade. Mahindra Thar EV Concept to debut on 15th August

Mahindra Thar EV Concept to debut on 15th August

Mahindra and Mahindra have teased an electric version of the Thar. It will be called Thar.e and will make its debut in concept form on 15th August in Cape Town, South Africa where the Mahindra is hosting an event called ‘Futurescape’ where the manufacturer will be showcasing a global tractor platform and a pick-up truck concept as well.

A screenshot from the teaser that Mahindra shared.

Not much is known about the Thar.e as of now. However, it can be expected that Mahindra will either re-purpose the existing platform of the Thar so that it can be used to fit batteries and electric motors or they will base the Thar.e on an all-new dedicated electric skateboard platform. Mahindra already has an electric platform called INGLO on which its upcoming electric SUVs will be based on.

Considering that Thar is an off-roader and comes with four-wheel drive, it makes sense for Mahindra to equip its electric version with a dual-motor setup where one motor sits on the front axle and another one sits on the rear axle. Having said that, what would be the icing on the cake would be a proper quad-motor setup. This means that each wheel will have its own electric motor to modulate the torque and traction individually while off-roading.

The teaser also shows us a glimpse of the rear tail lamp whose design is in line with the current Thar. So, it is a square unit with a smaller square inside. Considering this, it can be expected that the current design language of the Thar will mostly stay intact but will get a few changes here and there so that it can be recognized as the Thar.e and not the ICE version of the Thar.

Apart from this, it is important to note that Mahindra is only showing the concept version of the Thar.e so the production-spec version is still a few years away. Speaking of concepts, Mahindra will also showcase a pick-up truck concept which is expected to be based on the platform that Scorpio N and the upcoming Thar 5-door will use. Again, we do not know when the production-spec version of the pick-up truck will launch.
