A quick walk down memory lane

Over the years, Skoda Octavia gained immense popularity in the Indian market. When European cars were still a little out of reach for most Indians, Skoda quietly came onto the scene with simple promises: something solid, something premium, something different. That “something” turned out to be Octavia. It wasn't trying to be flashy or loud. The bus featured a tight build quality, a classy stance and an engine that really impressed people. Gradually, the Octavia became the car you saw in the neighborhood and immediately associated with success, not the flashy kind, but the “earned” kind.

And then Skoda did something that no one expected at that time. It decided to give this suave, executive-friendly sedan a suitably wild look. Enter the Octavia vRS, a car that looked innocent on the outside but had a mischievous smile under the hood. It transformed from a smart corporate choice to a celebratory badge of honor. For enthusiasts, it was the first time that something resembling a practical family car would make hearts skip a beat every time they drove it. This is where the story of RS in India began.

People began modifying these sedans to generate more horsepower, creating all kinds. Some sleeper builds can even rival sports cars, as shown on YouTube in 2010. However, fans were disappointed to receive the news in 2023 that the sedan was being discontinued. Enough of the history lesson, flashback to 2025, the Czech-made car got enthusiasts excited at the auto show. And recently I experienced this firsthand.

Let's talk about looks first because what's a film without buildup, right? The 2025 Skoda Octavia RS comes in five great colors, which include Mamba Green, Magic Black, Candy White, Race Blue and Velvet Red. Irrespective of the shade, the Octavia RS will win your heart with its sophisticated design. There are some updates to the fascia, which make the car look sharper than before. The bumper has been updated to look bold with sharp cuts, and the LED DRLs have also been updated to a new style. There are functional air vents on each side of the bumper, which coupled with the car's new aero-styled alloys are expected to make it more aerodynamic. The grille is now larger and the nose is lower, making the Octavia look like a supermodel posing for a magazine cover.

Greed doesn't stop here. Move to the rear, and the angled taillamps, along with the blacked-out spoiler, add a ton of character to the design. “There's a beast hiding inside me, but don't let anyone know,” the super slim twin exhaust whispers. Likewise, the VRS badges on the front and rear are equally subtle and patiently wait for you to figure out what they mean. The highlight of the car's side profile is its sloping coupe-ish roofline. Smooth in contrast to the sharp cuts of the front and back. The 19-inch alloy wheels might look better without the aero spokes, but then you win some and lose some. Peeking out from behind the alloy wheels are angry red calipers mounted on both the front and rear of the car.

Skoda Octavia RS: Cabin and features

Like Volkswagen Auto Group (VAG), the Octavia RS's dashboard is a 2025 minimalist. A touchscreen infotainment, a digital driver display and a few buttons. However, it does not feel outdated in any sense. I like to call it driver-centric. The steering wheel also feels amazing to hold. Most of the adjustments on the driver's display are adjustable via buttons on the steering wheel. For everything else, there's a 13-inch touchscreen. Now, both of these screens feature modern graphics and an easy-to-use interface.

Inside the cabin there are 'just clever' things that every Skoda offers, like a bin in the driver's door, an umbrella, etc. And it has every feature one could want, from wireless charging to electronically controlled seats. The seats themselves are quite supportive and finished in suede and leatherette. There's a suede pad with red stitching on the passenger side of the dashboard, which adds texture to the all-black cabin. The center console has a toggle switch for gear selection, which doesn't live up to the RS vibe. The rear seat also offers a good amount of practically usable space for three adults. But no one would want to buy this car for that, right?

Refinement levels are more than adequate. Despite enthusiasts' disagreements, the exhaust growl is noticeably less even in Sport mode. With the amazing fit and finish of the product, there is no question of unusual cabin noise.

Skoda Octavia RS: Drive Experience

Let's get to what you really want to know: how it runs. Now, I have to be careful here not to let my enthusiasm come out and give you an unbiased review of the sedan. However, the sedan is designed to fit exactly any individual. While driving the Skoda Octavia RS around the Buddh International Circuit, I was not able to test how it would handle the challenges that a sedan usually faces in the city. But whatever I tried managed to bring a smile to my face. The technology and grunt combined make a nice package on the track.

The Octavia RS today still suits its taste of everyday practicality, combined with a generous dose of sportiness. When you press the accelerator, you are pushed back into the seat. However, this is not an aggressive push, but a linear push. The transmission reminds you that this is still an executive sedan rather than a sports car. All said and done, this linear push takes the car from 0 to 100 km/h in around 6.4 seconds.

However, the Octavia RS shines in the corners. Spin the wheel and watch the 4.7 meter sedan change direction like a bird. One of the benefits of having front-wheel drive (FWD) is the freedom to throw your vehicle into a corner while you hold the gas without the stress of oversteering. And same is the case with this sedan. What further helps its case is the XDS+ differential, which keeps it glued even when all the kinks are gone. You do experience a small amount of body roll as you change direction, which isn't a huge deal but is noticeable.

The unit I was driving had been wandering around the track since morning and started shuddering while applying brakes. Despite this, braking performance remained solid. The pedal feel was just right, and it provided enough resistance to make you feel confident under hard braking.

Skoda Octavia RS: Verdict

Unfortunately, with only 100 units allocated, it's already sold out. The Skoda Octavia is a classic hot-hatch at its core, except that it's not a hatchback. What makes it great is its practicality, as well as overall performance. The Skoda Octavia will easily find a place in an enthusiastic father's garage. And it's the kind of car that will last until the kids grow up and learn to drive. Maybe just being there will turn a kid or two into an enthusiastic person. Of course, if you can afford one.

Asked whether the upcoming EPIQ EV would be introduced in the Indian market, Zelmer clarified that Skoda has separate plans for India, and not part of the company's strategy for the EPIQ sector.

Skoda sees India as an essential “second leg” for its business, which reduces dependence on European markets. This diversification is important, giving instability and geopolitical risk in other regions such as China and America. By investing heavy and committed to localized platforms, Skoda is aimed at a strong leg in India.

With its launch, Toyota has renewed its competition in the premium mid-size sedan segment. The closest rival of the 2025 Camry is the new Skoda Superb which was launched earlier this year in April.

Both these sedans have been launched with a revised list of features and technology. While the Camry gets a complete design overhaul and a new hybrid powertrain, the Superb comes with a generational update and a 2.0-litre unit that meets BS6 Stage 2 emission standards. While the global-spec 2025 Camry is available in four different trims, the Indian market will get only one variant, which is priced at 48 lakh (ex-showroom). There are six color options available and the car rides on newly designed 18-inch dual-tone alloys. The color options are: Cement Grey, Attitude Black, Dark Blue, Emotional Red, Platinum White Pearl and Precious Metal. The cabin is offered with dual-tone yellow-brown soft leather upholstery with a piano black center console.

The Superb is also offered in one variant and comes with three exterior color options, priced at Rs 54 lakh (ex-showroom). Color options include new Rosso Brunello and Water World Green colours. The third color option is Magic Black which was offered with the sedan before it was phased out from our shores. The Czech sedan is offered with cognac perforated leather upholstery with high contrast stitching. A piano black decoration with the Laurin & Clement logo is offered as an optional add-on.

Toyota Camry vs Skoda Superb: Exterior Design

The new generation Camry is completely different from the existing model in India and it gets a new front-end design. The mid-size sedan comes with a wide front grille and sharp headlamps, while the rear takes inspiration from the current generation Lexus sedan. The integrated LED DRLs come with sleek headlamps, while the large radiator grille gives the sedan a bold look.

In terms of design, the latest Skoda Superb is not much different from the last one sold in India. It comes with the usual Skoda grille with washers on the sides and full LED headlights. LED fog lights have been installed on the bumper. On the sides of the Superb, there are 18-inch Propass Aero alloy wheels. The LED taillights come with dynamic turn indicators. The sedan also has Laurin & Clément inscription on the front fender.

Toyota Camry vs Skoda Superb: Technical Features

The Toyota Camry includes a wide range of features, including two 12.3-inch displays for the infotainment and instrument cluster. The first enables wireless communication through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and includes connected car features. The sedan features a brand new pale brown soft leather interior. The front seats are 10-way power adjustable, and the driver has a memory function. The 2025 Camry also includes a panoramic sunroof, a wireless charging pad, a 9-speaker JBL audio system and three-zone climate control with rear AC vents.

Skoda has also revised the feature list for the new Superb. It includes a new 10.2-inch digital driver display and a 9.1-inch touchscreen infotainment panel that supports wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The car also comes with wireless charging, tri-zone climate control and more. The cabin is fitted with perforated Cognac leather, with a Piano Black design option available. The front seats can be electronically adjusted 12 different ways, and the driver's seat includes massage and memory functionalities. The driver gets a two-spoke steering wheel with paddle shifters.

Toyota Camry vs Skoda Superb: Engine and performance

The 2025 Toyota Camry is powered solely by a 2.5-litre inline-four petrol-hybrid engine with a combined maximum output of 226.8 bhp and 221 Nm of torque. Power is delivered to the front wheels via an e-CVT with 10-speed sequential shift mode for a manual driving experience. In global markets, the Camry is offered with all-wheel drive, with on-demand torque distribution between the front and rear wheels.

The Skoda Superb comes in its Laurin & Klement variant, powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder TSI petrol engine that meets India's current pollution standards. The unit is mated to a seven-speed DCT transmission. This engine is capable of producing 187 bhp and 320 Nm of peak torque.

Toyota Camry vs Skoda Superb: Safety Features

The 2025 Toyota Camry comes equipped with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), the automaker's in-house ADAS suite that includes lane-keeping assist, lane departure alert, a pre-collision system, dynamic radar cruise control, and automatic high beams. The vehicle also features nine airbags, a 360-degree panoramic rear-view monitor, ABS with EBD and braking assist and ISOFIX mounts at the rear. It includes vehicle stability and traction control systems, as well as TPM, hill start assist control with up/down assist, and an engine immobilizer.

The Skoda Superb will be one of the carmaker's safest models in India. While the Slavia and Kushaq received five-star safety ratings in the Global NCAP crash tests, the Superb received an equally high rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests. Apart from nine airbags, the sedan includes advanced safety technologies such as driver fatigue or drowsiness detection, a 360-degree camera, active chassis control, a tire pressure monitoring system and park assist with emergency braking assist.

Neither carmaker has released any official statement regarding the emissions penalties they may face. Car manufacturers have urged the Center that it would be inappropriate to reconsider imposing the new CAFE norms on vehicles manufactured throughout the financial year. The new CAFE norms, set by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency under the Union Power Ministry, were introduced in 2022 but were implemented from January last year. The Center has not yet released the CAFE norms report for FY 2022-23 and discussions are underway among stakeholders to get more clarity on the objections raised by carmakers.

What are CAFE criteria?

The report said eight carmakers, including Skoda, Renault, Nissan Motor and Force Motors, failed to comply with CAFE norms in the last financial year. CAFE norms, which were first introduced in India in 2017, are a set of rules that limit the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by a carmaker's fleet in a financial year. The rules were revised in 2022 with stricter norms. It states that all fleets should not consume more than 4.78 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers and carbon dioxide emissions should not exceed 113 grams per kilometer.

The Czech government said on Friday it would pressure the EU to review emissions rules ahead of the plan, saying tougher rules would harm the competitiveness of the European car sector.

The country's three big car plants – Volkswagen's Skoda Auto, Toyota and Hyundai – are expected to produce about 1.4 million cars in 2023 and make up about 10 percent of its gross domestic product.

Prague will urge the EU to move up a planned review of its CO2 rules from 2026 to 2025, Czech Transport Minister Martin Kupka told reporters.

“We also need to change the (emissions) limit for 2025,” Kupka said. He said that EU rules are not in line with market conditions.

“Sales of electric cars are falling … even though the EU had predicted growth and based its emissions limits on it,” Kupka said.

He said sanctions for failure to comply would prevent carmakers from investing in development, putting them at a disadvantage to rivals in China or the United States.

Kupka said Prague would invite ministers and European Parliament members from other EU countries to support the campaign.

The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) also last month asked Brussels to “come forward with urgent relief measures before the new CO2 targets for cars and vans come into force in 2025”.

Europe is racing to produce more electric cars as part of its green transition, with an EU deadline to phase out the sale of fossil fuel-burning cars by 2035 approaching.

But after years of growth, electric car sales began to decline in late 2023, and now account for just 12.5 percent of new cars sold on the continent.

The current generation Skoda Kodiaq has been around for a while and Skoda has already unveiled the new generation model globally. The next-generation Kodiaq is expected to arrive in India in 2025 and is expected to arrive via the Completely Knocked Down (CKD) route.

Skoda reportedly will also bring back the Superb and Octavia to the Indian market later this year. Reports suggest that the current generation Superb will be reintroduced as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). Furthermore, the company has the Enyaq electric SUV in the pipeline for India, while it recently announced the made-in-India subcompact SUV that will go on sale in 2025.

The voluntary test for the Hyundai Verna was one of the last tests to be done by Global NCAP for India.

The front and rear bumpers come updated, while the LED matrix headlamps, new alloy wheels and reworked boot lid with Skoda lettering along with new wraparound and sharp-looking LED taillights will enhance the car’s visual appeal.

As Skoda has already revealed, the new generation Superb sedan will come featuring a 10-inch fully digital instrument cluster inside the cabin, while the key attraction will be the 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The touchscreen infotainment system will come with wireless mobile connectivity, while the car will also get dual-tone brown and black upholstery and heated and ventilated front seats among other features. As the auto manufacturer has hinted, the new generation Skoda Superb will come offering a more premium vibe than the current model.

On the powertrain front, the new generation iteration of the premium sedan would get four different powertrain options. These will include a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, a 2.0-litre diesel engine, a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol mild-hybrid engine, and a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol plug-in hybrid engine. Transmission options for the sedan would include manual and automatic gearboxes. Expect the India-bound version of the new Skoda Superb to come with the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit. Upon launch, the new Skoda Superb will revise its competition with rivals like the Toyota Camry, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series and Audi A4.
