Will Tata Punch come with diesel engine? The company gave this answer

Last Updated:

2026 Tata Punch has been launched with a new design, turbo-petrol engine and twin-cylinder CNG setup. Diesel variant is not possible at present due to price and regulations. The company says that Punch can be prepared with diesel engine but this will increase its price significantly which will not be right according to this segment.

New Delhi. With the launch of the all-new version of the 2026 Tata Punch, this micro-SUV has now moved towards the premium segment. It has included a new design, upgraded cabin, long feature list and most importantly, the option of turbo-petrol engine, which has further increased the popularity of Punch. However, amidst all these changes, a question arises that will Tata Motors ever offer Punch with a diesel engine? Come, let us find the answer to this question.

diesel engine in compact car
This question is not unnecessary. Tata has shown in the past that diesel engines can perform well in compact cars. For example, the Altroz still comes with a diesel option and is considered to be the best powertrain in its segment. Altroz and Punch are almost the same size and both have the same engineering platform.

Price will increase with diesel engine
Speaking to Auto Today, Mohan Savarkar, Chief Product Officer, Tata Motors, said that powertrain decisions are based on larger market realities. According to him, after the implementation of BS6 emission norms, the trend of diesel engines in small cars has decreased rapidly. According to BS6 Phase 2 regulations, the cost of diesel engines increases significantly, especially in segments where price matters a lot. Savarkar said that it is technically possible to make a diesel Punch, but this will take the price of the vehicle to a level which is higher than the expectations of customers buying micro-SUVs. He said, “The customers who buy Punch will find this price a little higher.” For this reason, Tata has not currently chosen the diesel option for Punch.

Petrol and CNG option
Instead, Tata has focused on petrol and CNG powertrains to increase the popularity of Punch. The biggest change in this is the new 1.2-litre iTurbo Revotron engine, which produces 120bhp and 170Nm power and comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox. This setup accelerates from 0-100kmph in just 11.1 seconds and is aimed at customers who want more power but do not want to buy a big SUV.

Twin-cylinder CNG setup
Like before, Punch also has naturally aspirated petrol engine and CNG option, which is now available with AMT. This is India's first SUV to have a twin-cylinder CNG setup and automatic gearbox. Currently, Tata Motors believes that these petrol and CNG options cater to both performance-seeking and budget-conscious customers. Although the idea of Diesel Punch sounds good on paper, it is unlikely to become a reality any time soon due to current regulations and pricing.

It has become the first SUV in the country to be provided with AMT gearbox with twin-cylinder CNG technology, that is, it is the first CNG car that comes with an automatic gearbox. New turbo engine and CNG AMT for the first time in the segment The biggest change in this car is the new 1.2-litre i-Turbo engine, which produces 120 bhp and 170 Nm torque. This is the most powerful punch variant till date. A 6-speed manual gearbox is available with this engine and the company claims that it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 11.1 seconds.

Power and Performance
The existing 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which produces 88 bhp and 115 Nm of torque, will also be available in both manual and AMT options. At the same time, the biggest update so far has been seen in the 1.2-litre i-CNG variant. Tata's innovative twin-cylinder CNG technology, which is already known to increase boot space, now comes with a 5-speed AMT. With this, Punch has become India's first CNG SUV which has an automatic option. This combination makes driving easy. The 1.2-litre petrol engine with CNG produces 73 bhp and 103 Nm of peak torque.

exterior design
Inspired by the Punch EV, the 2026 Punch sports a new front look with vertically stacked LED headlamps and a wide 3D effect grille topped by a full-width gloss-black DRL bar. The SUV gets a wider and more powerful look with deeper and more sculpted bumpers, silver accents and functional air curtains. New dual-tone 16-inch alloy wheels, blacked-out ORVMs and six new body colors—Bengal Rouge, Caramel and Scientific—further enhance its road presence. At the rear, the connected LED tail-lamps housed in a black panel and the new bumper keep the Punch in line with Tata's latest design trends.

interior design
The layout of the Punch in the interior remains the same, but there has been a major upgrade in terms of materials and features. The biggest change is Tata's new two-spoke steering wheel with the brand's illuminated logo—previously seen on Tata's EV range. The center console now has a touch-enabled Clima Touch panel, making its look even more modern and clean.

The only SUV to snatch the number 1 crown from Maruti, better safety than German cars for just Rs 6 lakh, best in features too!

New Delhi. Maruti Suzuki has been leading the Indian car market for the last 22 years. If we look at the top-10 selling cars of every month, then mostly Maruti cars remain in the list. Maruti's cars like WagonR, Swift, Dezire and Ertiga are known as the best selling models in India. These cars always remain on the first, second or third position in terms of sales.

However, a few years ago, a car manufacturer of the country launched an SUV which snatched the number-1 crown from Maruti cars. This car has reached more than 4 lakh homes and offers the best performance, space and safety features at its price.

This car snatched the crown of number-1
Tata Punch is a well-known name in the Indian car market. Tata Motors launched it as a budget SUV in October 2021 and its popularity has continued since then. The company launched it at an ex-showroom price of Rs 5.49 lakh and it is still the safest car in its segment. The latest generation of Tata Punch is priced at Rs 6.12 lakh (ex-showroom) and this car comes with a 5-star Global NCAP safety rating. The company is offering it in petrol as well as CNG and electric versions.

Tata Punch gives a mileage of 27 Km/Kg in CNG.

Let us tell you that according to market research firm Jato Dynamics, a total of 1,16,000 units of Maruti WagonR have been sold between January and July 2024, while during the same period, Tata Punch has registered sales of more than 1,26,000 units. If we look at the contribution of models other than petrol in sales, then 45% of Wagner's sales came from CNG models. Whereas, the contribution of CNG and electric models in the sales of Punch was 47%.

The secret of Tata Punch's success
Punch is a micro SUV, which offers SUV like features at an affordable price. Additionally, Punch has moved beyond just petrol options to multi-fuel options, giving customers the option to choose from CNG and electric models in addition to petrol. Electric and CNG variants of the Punch make up 47% of its total sales, indicating the popularity of alternative fuel options. It is also clear from this change that the interest of consumers is now moving away from traditional fuel towards alternative fuel options.
