2026 Tata Punch has been launched with a new design, turbo-petrol engine and twin-cylinder CNG setup. Diesel variant is not possible at present due to price and regulations. The company says that Punch can be prepared with diesel engine but this will increase its price significantly which will not be right according to this segment.
New Delhi. With the launch of the all-new version of the 2026 Tata Punch, this micro-SUV has now moved towards the premium segment. It has included a new design, upgraded cabin, long feature list and most importantly, the option of turbo-petrol engine, which has further increased the popularity of Punch. However, amidst all these changes, a question arises that will Tata Motors ever offer Punch with a diesel engine? Come, let us find the answer to this question.

This question is not unnecessary. Tata has shown in the past that diesel engines can perform well in compact cars. For example, the Altroz still comes with a diesel option and is considered to be the best powertrain in its segment. Altroz and Punch are almost the same size and both have the same engineering platform.
Price will increase with diesel engine
Speaking to Auto Today, Mohan Savarkar, Chief Product Officer, Tata Motors, said that powertrain decisions are based on larger market realities. According to him, after the implementation of BS6 emission norms, the trend of diesel engines in small cars has decreased rapidly. According to BS6 Phase 2 regulations, the cost of diesel engines increases significantly, especially in segments where price matters a lot. Savarkar said that it is technically possible to make a diesel Punch, but this will take the price of the vehicle to a level which is higher than the expectations of customers buying micro-SUVs. He said, “The customers who buy Punch will find this price a little higher.” For this reason, Tata has not currently chosen the diesel option for Punch.
Petrol and CNG option
Instead, Tata has focused on petrol and CNG powertrains to increase the popularity of Punch. The biggest change in this is the new 1.2-litre iTurbo Revotron engine, which produces 120bhp and 170Nm power and comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox. This setup accelerates from 0-100kmph in just 11.1 seconds and is aimed at customers who want more power but do not want to buy a big SUV.
Twin-cylinder CNG setup
Like before, Punch also has naturally aspirated petrol engine and CNG option, which is now available with AMT. This is India's first SUV to have a twin-cylinder CNG setup and automatic gearbox. Currently, Tata Motors believes that these petrol and CNG options cater to both performance-seeking and budget-conscious customers. Although the idea of Diesel Punch sounds good on paper, it is unlikely to become a reality any time soon due to current regulations and pricing.
