This SUV, which was launched 34 years ago, created a ruckus, then had to be discontinued, this was the reason

New Delhi. Everyone is excited about the recently launched 2025 Tata Sierra. Do you know that this legendary SUV was India's first SUV? Some vehicles were way ahead of their time and could not attract people's attention. Tata Sierra is the best example of this. In 1991, when Indians did not know much about SUVs, Tata introduced India's first premium Indian SUV. Before the Sierra, Tata was known for its commercial vehicles; Sierra was his first passenger car. Find out why the 1991 Sierra was way ahead of its time.

New design for Indians
The design of Tata Sierra was new for Indians. Its unique design was three-door, with large rear windows curved towards the roof. The Sierra was one of the boldest looking vehicles of 1991. The ladder-on-frame chassis of the Tata Sierra was taken from the Telcoline pickup truck, which increased its size.

India's first premium SUV
Tata Sierra was the first premium SUV in the Indian market. Sierra introduced many such features, which were seen for the first time not only in this segment but in the Indian automobile industry. The Sierra's interiors had features like power windows, power steering, tilt adjustment for the steering, central air conditioning and central locking. Also, the large rear window and vintage sofa-like rear seat provided a great experience to the rear passengers. The Sierra came with two rear windshield wipers, which are not found in many modern vehicles; This was necessary given the large rear windshield.

equipped with diesel engine
While in 1991, other big companies were selling only passenger vehicles with petrol engines, the Sierra came with a diesel engine. Tata launched Sierra with a 2 liter naturally aspirated diesel engine, which gave 63 HP power and 120 Nm torque. Rear-wheel drive was standard on the Sierra and 4×4 was optional. The 4×4 powertrain layout with the diesel engine was a revolutionary feature in the 90s. Tata provided the Sierra with a unique dog-leg 5-speed gearbox, with first gear placed on the lower-left instead of the traditional H-pattern.

Turbocharged engine launched in 1997
Later in 1997, Tata launched a turbocharged version of the Sierra, which produced 89 hp power and 190 Nm torque. This version came with an H-pattern gearbox, which further improved the driving experience of the Sierra. The three-door design of the Tata Sierra in 1991 was not very useful for Indian families. Moreover, its starting price was Rs 5 lakh (on-road Mumbai), which reached Rs 8 lakh (on-road Mumbai) in the late 90s. In its initial years, Tata Sierra had to compete with popular Maruti vehicles like Maruti 800, Omni and Gypsy. Maruti cars were cheaper and looked more practical according to the Indian budget. Later Mahindra also launched Armada, which had the same engine as Sierra but was priced lower. In 2002, Mahindra Scorpio gave tough competition to Sierra.

Had to shut down in 2003
The Tata Sierra was in the market from 1991 to 2003; Only 667 units were sold in 1991 and sales reached 3,910 units in 1994–95. After this there was a decline in sales. Due to low sales, Tata shifted its focus to other vehicles. This was the reason why this revolutionary Indian SUV remained out of the public eye.

We recently got behind the driving seat of Tata's latest SUV, the Sierra. During our drive, we tested the SUV on multiple parameters including 0 to 100 acceleration. The test was professionally conducted by HT Auto on a closed, private road. As always, this test was conducted under controlled conditions by trained drivers. Readers are strictly advised not to attempt any speed or acceleration test on public roads.

What were the testing conditions?

The tested Sierra was equipped with Tata's newly introduced 6-speed automatic gearbox and was set to Sport mode, which ensured that the powertrain was operating in the most responsive manner. The SUV was powered by the new 1.5-litre Hyperion turbo-petrol engine, rated at 158 hp and 255 Nm of torque.

To achieve the cleanest possible launch, the brakes were held while revs built up before releasing, a standard procedure in controlled acceleration testing. This allowed the turbo to rev up a little earlier. The vehicle was carrying two adults, one at the wheel and one pillion, each weighing around 60–70 kg. The fuel tank was filled to full capacity, increasing the total test load.

What were the results?

Under these conditions, the Sierra accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.96 seconds, according to the stopwatch time. For a midsize SUV with a full tank, two passengers, and an automatic transmission, the result puts the Sierra among the faster offerings in its segment. Especially considering that this is a new powertrain-gearbox combination that is undergoing preliminary evaluation, it's not just a number. The 1.5 turbo petrol Hyperion engine is what makes the SUV frolic like a kid inside a ball pit.

Why does this test matter?

Acceleration statistics are not just about straight motion; They provide insight into how a vehicle will react during highway mergers, overtakes and climbs. With the Hyperion turbo-petrol engine and the new 6-AT that shows promising response, the Sierra is set to deliver a more engaging driving experience than previous Tata petrol SUVs.

Tata Sierra first drive review: A bold but friendly beast

Tata Sierra first drive review: A bold but friendly beast

And now Tata has done it again by bringing back the Sierra. Only this time it is safer, looks more modern and includes more technology. It all comes at a starting price 11.49 lakh (ex-showroom), which, against the backdrop of its rivals, actually looks more attractive. But the Sierra promises much more than its rivals. More in terms of appearance, the Sierra also brings more space and history associated with the tag.

The Sierra letters are placed at the front and rear to remind of the iconic nameplate.

However, does the Sierra have enough power to live up to its claims? Does it have enough content to justify its price? To find out exactly this, we sat in the driver's seat of the SUV. And here's what we found out:

Designed by Martin Ulharich, the design of the SUV marks a significant step up from what Tata has traditionally produced for quite some time. Towards the front, the face gets a square shape. The corners have been rounded to give it a softer look. There is a certain freshness to connected LED DRLs as they do not have an end-to-end lightbar type design. The headlamps are also sleek, being only 17 millimeters thick. However, this does not affect the performance of the beam. In fact, it's one of the brightest LED projectors I've seen on any comparable SUV. Some may also notice a slight resemblance to the SUV's distant cousin, the Defender. Personally, I don't get it; However, I could immediately notice with Sierra that panel lag was addressed.

tata sierra
The Sierra gets super slim headlamps without compromising on visibility.

On the side profile of the Sierra. One thing that set the original Sierra apart from other SUVs of the time was the beautiful and huge quarter glass, which extended all the way to the roof. And to make the new SUV clearly 'Sierra', Tata decided to keep it there. Although the new one has no detailed quarter glass, it tries to resemble the original by adding a piano black finish just above the quarter glass. The 19-inch alloy wheels really add to its character, setting it apart from other SUVs that offer a maximum size of 18 inches. It is painted in Piano Black color around the wheel arches and the entire lower part of the car. This is an unconventional choice from Tata, as piano black tends to tarnish very easily.

tata sierra
From the side the Sierra looks like a daring yet futuristic SUV.

Going behind the car, for reasons unknown, the SUV reminds me of Iron Man's mask. It gets a flat rear end with slim single-piece LED tail lamp, which gives a futuristic touch to this SUV. The clamshell-boot door opening is also unique, allowing easy access to the SUV's 622-litre boot. The boot door is electronically operated and has gesture control for convenience. There's a bit of boot loading that gets in the way of things, but it's not big enough to be a problem.

tata sierra
The boot of Tata Sierra has been designed in such a way that it is suitable for use in most places.

One of the most attractive elements of the Tata Sierra is its color palette. It is offered in six options, which include Andaman Adventure (Bright Yellow), Bengal Rouge (Bright Red), Coorg Clouds (Metallic Silver), Munnar Mist (Colour Changing Dark Green), Pristine White and Pure Grey. We traveled around the city in Andaman Adventure and Bengal Rouge shades, and the car attracted people like bees on blueberry cheesecake. The SUV was attracting attention partly because of its iconic nameplate, but the colors were also adding fuel to the fire.

tata sierra
The colors of Tata Sierra attract attention on the road.

Tata Sierra: Performance and driving dynamics

We tested the newly engineered 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine along with the existing 1.5 diesel powertrain in Tata's portfolio on this new SUV. Keeping the best in mind for last, let's start with the diesel.

The 1.5-litre Cryojet is a familiar powertrain brought over from the Curve. Tata hasn't made much changes here; The engine senses torque and pulls in a linear manner. There is a small amount of turbo lag at start, which is a characteristic of turbocharged vehicles. The refinement levels of this engine are also something one can write home about, as it doesn't feel like a diesel unless pushed very hard. This engine of Sierra can be paired with 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. Now, the 6-speed automatic is a brand-new Japanese torque-converter transmission manufactured by Aisin. Now the transmission works well when driving comfortably around town. It shifts smoothly and downshifts quickly for overtakes. However, when you want it to be in manual mode, the transmission allows only superficial control. Once you step on the accelerator, it holds the gear until you reach redline and then upshifts for you, which is neither necessarily a good thing nor a bad thing. It also does not allow 'money-transfer'; The transmission keeps it safe even in manual mode.

tata sierra
A total of three engine options and three transmission options are available in Tata Sierra.

Enough of that, now let's address the elephant in the room and talk about the 1.5-litre Hyperion engine. I'm also eager to tell you about it, because it's more fun to drive than a diesel. And that's very admirable, considering that diesel engines tend to push people into their seats once the turbos are spooled up. The new Hyperion brings a new life to the Tata Sierra with its spirited character. The Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) gives the SUV even better low-end pull than the diesel. The engine pulls and pulls some more, and doesn't stop pulling. If you're keen enough there's a subtle amount of turbo whirring that can be heard, making the drive all the more satisfying for an enthusiast. It accelerates from 0-100 kmph in just 10 seconds, and that's an impressive feat for an SUV that stands 1.7 meters tall and weighs close to 1.5 tonnes.

tata sierra
The Tata Sierra handles rough roads well without moving around too much.

With a ground clearance of 205 mm, you feel confident in the SUV driving around large speed bumps and rough roads. Talking about rough patches, the suspension has been tuned on the soft side and it absorbs bumps even at high speeds of 60 kmph. Tata claims that they have integrated the technology and tuned the suspension in such a way that even if you are driving at highway speeds, the car will absorb unexpected and sudden shocks well. The slightly softer suspension imparts slight body roll to the animal; However, it is far from being unbearable. For an SUV of this size, it grips the tarmac very well and changing direction is not too difficult.

Tata Sierra: NVH levels and interior experience

Now inside, the cabin is a great place to stay; NVH is equipped with both engine options. Diesel noise is not going to bother the passengers. Road noise insulation also seems like a job well done. There are no rattles or rattles from inside either. The Sierra feels like a well-built and premium SUV here too.

Overall, the cabin looks and feels like a very premium space with a triple-tone interior combining black, off-white and beige colours. The expansive sunroof creates a very airy cabin feel and lets you enjoy the views above you more than ever.

tata sierra
Tata Sierra gets triple-tone interior.

The dashboard features the Sierra's 'piece de resistance', a triple-screen setup built like one big screen. This single unit consists of a passenger screen of 12.3 inches, an infotainment screen of the same size and a driver display of 10.25 inches with all the important information. They not only look good but also provide a lot of functionality inside the SUV.

The passenger screen lets kids play games through a controller connected via Bluetooth. One can connect a set of headphones and watch a movie on this screen. However, it won't be better than the Dolby Audio installed in the car, which delivers a very premium cinematic sound experience with the help of 12 speakers.

The car is also loaded with personalization features that allow the user to preset memory function seats, ambient lighting, AC temperature and even sunroof position. All you have to do is enter the car, touch the screen and load your profile, and the car will set everything up according to your chosen preferences.

tata sierra
Some people may enjoy operating touchscreen climate controls, while others may be frustrated by the lack of physical controls.

The panel below the touchscreen houses a soundbar that shoots mid-range music frequencies for you. Just below this is the touch-operated dual-zone climate control panel. This panel also has touch buttons for fog lamps, hill descent control, parking lights, lock unlock and 360-degree camera functionality.

There are plenty of cubby holes all around the car to hold your bottles, cups and even a dedicated storage for your umbrella. One storage that could have been better designed is the cubby under the driver's armrest. It's a deep but narrow space, good for holding bottles but not accessible enough for other things like mints, keys, and other accessories.

Tata Sierra: Verdict

The Sierra is a big, bold, and future-proof SUV, at least for a few years. It offers great engine options which are powerful. The new automatic transmission balances affordability and maintenance costs with everyday usability and performance. The entertainment suite and air cabin are good enough to keep the family happy. It is a great all-rounder package for a family man who still wishes to stand out.

Now, the image shows that the on-road prices of Sierra in Delhi start from Rs 14.70 lakh and go up to Rs 20 lakh. Apart from this, the price of its EV version has also been revealed in the image – which starts at Rs 20.70 lakh (on-road, Delhi) and the top trim is priced at Rs 25.90 lakh (on-road, Delhi). But are these prices true?

Is the price list right or wrong?
If you look carefully at the image, the names of ICE variants have been given as Pure, Adventure and Emotion. Whereas Emotion trim is not included in the trim options of Sierra. Additionally, there is no AMT option offered in any trim, while the Sierra comes with a DCA gearbox option, but there is no trim with a DCA gearbox on the sheet. It is clear from this that the entire price list given above can be considered wrong. Tata will soon announce the full prices of the model, before the bookings begin.

On-road price in Mumbai
At present, the Indian automaker has only revealed the starting price of this model – which is Rs 13.5 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). However, according to Tata, the price of the top trim can go up to Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom).

What else is special?
Tata has tried to make Sierra premium and affordable. In this, you get a triple-screen setup (10.25 inch, 12.3 inch and 12.3 inch), powered driver seat, ventilated front seats, Level 2+ ADAS, 12-speaker JBL Black sound system with Dolby Atmos, dashboard-mounted Sonic Shift soundbar, AR head-up-display, powered tailgate, largest panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera and many more. Features are available. Apart from this, Tata is also planning to include AWD configuration in this model in future. Also, the electric version of Sierra will also be launched by the end of the next financial year.

New Delhi. Tata Motors has created a huge buzz in the market by launching its latest SUV Tata Sierra SUV. The price, look, features of this SUV, everything is being discussed in the automobile industry. New updates are coming about it continuously. Now a new update shows that Tata Sierra, the company which is not limited to just diesel and petrol variants, is going to bring many variants of this car. These will also be offered with all wheel drive, 7 seater layout and CNG. With these additions, the company will target buyers who like big families and off-roading.

Sierra Family Expansion

The Sierra is positioned as a midsize SUV, positioned between the Tata Curve and the larger Harrier SUV. Due to its bold and rugged styling, large cabin and feature-rich interior, this SUV is much talked about in the market. However, to take this success forward, Tata is planning to introduce new variants above the standard 5-seater, which will maintain their identity apart from the brand's larger SUVs. The company is working on a 7-seater variant. This 3-row layout will fall between the existing Sierra and full-size D-segment SUVs, giving Tata an opportunity to enter this fast-growing segment in India. Due to the Sierra's long wheelbase design and its modular architecture, this type of configuration is possible without major structural changes.

All-wheel drive and CNG option also in the pipeline

Tata is also working on all-wheel drive options for the Sierra, targeting buyers who want better traction and mild off-road capability, but don't want to compromise on everyday needs. The adult version will come stage wise, in which the adult will be available in the electric Sierra (EV) from the beginning of 2026. The internal combustion engine (ICE) adult variant is expected to be launched in early 2027. Along with the adult, Tata is also considering a CNG variant in view of the increasing demand for fuel efficiency and eco-friendly options in the midsize SUV segment. This will give customers a practical option for long distance travel and budget-friendly driving. The launch of CNG Sierra will depend on the development of the segment.

ARGOS Platform

The foundation of all these future variants is Tata's new ARGOS platform (All-Terrain Ready, Omni-Energy, and Geometry Scalable Architecture), which will support the 2025 Sierra. This modular architecture allows Tata to adopt multiple powertrains such as petrol, diesel, CNG, hybrid and EV. It also supports adult hardware, multiple wheelbase options and different interior layouts, making it easier for the brand to introduce new Sierra variants with less re-engineering.

New Delhi. Tata Motors has made headlines by launching the all-new 2025 Sierra mid-size SUV in India. This SUV is becoming increasingly popular due to its great looks and advanced features. However, most people are ignoring the fact that Sierra is also the most practical SUV in its segment, because it has a huge boot space. According to reports, its boot is so big that it even leaves behind some popular MPVs, especially when the third row is folded.

tata sierra

Champion of boot space: First of all, let us tell you that the new 2025 Tata Sierra offers the largest boot space in the mid-size SUV segment. It has a boot space of 622 litres, which is the highest in this segment. Its nearest competitor MG Astor has a capacity of 488 litres. At the same time, the boot of Sierra is 44 percent more than other popular SUVs in the segment like Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, because both the South Korean SUVs have only 433 liters of space.

Boot space of Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser

Apart from this, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Highrider have the least boot space, which is only 373 litres. Honda Elevate has 458 liters of boot space, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun have 385 liters, and Citroen C3 Aircross has 433 liters of boot space. These figures prove that Sierra has no competition in terms of rear boot capacity.

Bigger boot than popular MPV

Tata Sierra is not only the boot space champion in the mid-size SUV segment, but it also leaves behind popular MPVs like Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota Rumion. Ertiga and Rumion have only 209 liters of boot space with the third row. Even with the third row folded, it offers only 550 liters of space, which is less than the Sierra's 622 litres.

kia carens

Talking about Kia Carens, it has a boot space of 216 liters with the third row. When the third row is folded it reaches 645 litres. However, it is worth noting that the Sierra, which is not an MPV, offers only 23 liters less space than the Carens. This makes the Sierra one of the most practical mid-size SUVs on the market. Apart from the size of the boot space, Tata Motors has also ensured that the wide and downward opening tailgate of the Sierra makes it easy to load and unload bulky items. Also, the flat boot floor and low wheel arch intrusion make it easier to fit more luggage in the boot. Even if 622 liters seems less, the capacity can be increased to 1,257 liters by folding the middle row.

large boot space

Those who want to use the Sierra in the city may not find such a large boot space of much use. But there are many people who need more boot space for long distance travel. For such buyers, the large boot space ensures that they can carry more luggage, that too without compromising on cabin space.

price

Tata Sierra has been launched in India at a starting price of Rs 11.49 lakh. At this price, many buyers will be interested in buying Sierra, because it has a new, modern design and many practical features.

Tata Motors launches the new Sierra in India, which has features like 10.25-inch digital cluster, 12-speaker JBL Black sound system and Level 2+ ADAS, but some features are better in Creta. Although Sierra has many amazing features, but there are many features which could have made this SUV more amazing but it does not have these features. Here we will tell you about some such features.

Finally, Tata Motors has launched the new Sierra in India. This SUV has surprised everyone with its design and features. However, there are some features which we wish Tata Motors would have provided in it.

The Sierra comes with a powered driver seat with memory function, but the co-driver seat comes with manual adjustment. This is not a major drawback, but this feature is available in the Creta and it could have been included in the feature-loaded Sierra as well.

Another feature which is in Creta but not in Sierra – Powered Boss Mode. With the amount of space available on the rear seat, Powered Boss Mode could have further enhanced the luxury experience. Although, Boss Mode is available in it, but it has to be done manually. We feel that this feature should have been there because Tata Motors itself introduced it with Safari in the affordable segment.

Still, this isn't a deal-breaker feature, but it would be nice if it were. Tata Motors has paid a lot of attention to rear seat comfort and it would have been better if there was a rear wireless charging pad. Currently, this feature is available only in Hyundai Creta in this segment.

This sounds familiar, doesn't it? Actually, Tata Motors had recently given a small update to Tata Curve. New features like R-Comfort rear seats were included in it. The specialty of this feature is that it has passive ventilation function. So even though the Sierra doesn't have fully rear ventilated seats, the brand could have offered R-Comfort seats from its own Tata Curve.

Otherwise, Sierra is a feature-rich SUV. It also gets a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.3-inch touchscreen system, 12.3-inch co-driver touchscreen, 12-speaker JBL Black sound system, Level 2+ ADAS, electronic parking brake, adjustable thigh support for front seats, ventilated front seats, 2-step reclining rear seats and much more.

Tata Sierra is going to compete with Hyundai Creta in the Indian market.

Tata Sierra was one of the most awaited cars of this year. Now after its launch it will be interesting to see the response of the customers.

Tata Sierra 2025 design: A new take on a classic
It was not easy for Tata Motors to reintroduce the Sierra, especially considering the sentiments associated with the brand. But it would not be wrong to say that Tata has introduced a design which is connected to its roots and at the same time is completely modern and premium.

  • Ground clearance: 205 mm
  • Water Wading Capacity: 450mm

strong road presence
Its size is equal to other SUVs in the segment like Creta and Seltos. However, the Sierra looks taller and wider. It will have better road presence. The 19-inch alloy wheels are the largest in the segment, which is on par with a large SUV: this gives the Sierra a confident and powerful look. Marker lights have been provided in the flush-fitting door handles, which will make them easy to identify in the dark. However, it is not motorized like the XUV700. The new Sierra does not have a spare wheel in the boot like the older model. By placing the wheel there, the boot will open from the side and the door will become heavy, which will reduce the practicality.

Andaman Adventure, Bengal Rouge, Munnar Mist, Coorg Clouds, Pristine White and Pure Grey. You can see all the Sierra colors in real world images here. Tata Sierra Dark Edition is also expected to arrive soon.

Tata Sierra Interior: Lounge Experience

The wait is over, Tata Sierra will make a grand comeback today after 34 years

The wait is over, Tata Sierra will make a grand comeback today after 34 years

New Delhi. Tata Motors is going to launch its most important and much awaited product today – All-New Sierra. Prices of ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) variants will be released today. Earlier reports had said that the ICE variant of Sierra will be based on the ATLAS (Adaptive Tech Forward Lifestyle Architecture) platform. The same architecture is also used for the existing curve. But according to our sources, Sierra will be based on a completely new platform. It has been designed and tuned to strike a balance between better road performance and ride quality. The new Sierra will be manufactured in Sainand. Sources have also said that the new Sierra will be manufactured at the Sainand factory, which Tata Motors bought from Ford. The acquisition of this plant was completed in January 2023. Whereas, Curve is manufactured in Ranjangaon facility.

There will be both petrol and diesel engine options
While the Harrier and Safari come with only diesel engines, the Sierra will be available in both petrol and diesel engine options. It will get two petrol engines – one 1.5 liter naturally aspirated engine which will give a power of around 120hp and the other 1.5 liter direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine, which was shown at the Auto Expo 2023. The turbo-petrol engine will generate power of around 170hp and 280Nm and will be available in higher variants.

Apart from this, diesel engine will also be available. Earlier reports had said that the company may offer a detuned version of Harrier's 2.0 liter diesel engine in Sierra. But according to the latest information, the compact SUV will get a 1.5 liter turbocharged diesel engine. Powertrain specifications may be revealed later today. The all-new Sierra will come with front wheel drive (FWD). The original Sierra of the 90s had rear-wheel drive, with some higher variants also offering four-wheel drive (4WD).

4×4 support
Interestingly, the platform of the new Sierra also supports 4×4 and if there is demand, Tata Motors can also bring this option in the future. Triple-screen setup will be available. The cabin of Sierra has been brilliantly designed and many features have been provided in it. The biggest attraction is the triple-screen setup, which will have three 12.3-inch screens – driver information display, central infotainment screen and front passenger entertainment display. This setup will be available only in higher variants. Two screens and a HUD (Head Up Display) can be found in the lower variants.

These features are also present
Apart from these, the higher variants will also get panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, ventilated seats, wireless charger, 360-degree camera, electronic parking brake and more. The vehicle will also have premium audio system and connectivity features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The design of the new Sierra (ICE) is praiseworthy. It has sharp lines, clean body panels and smart design elements. The highlight of the exterior design is the curved rear window glass, which creates the visual effect of a large panoramic glasshouse – reminiscent of the single-piece rear glass of the original Sierra.

hidden door beadings
Apart from this, hidden door beadings are also provided in it, which gives it a clean and attractive look. Another smart feature is the clamshell designed boot lid. This means that when you open the boot, the tail lamps will also rise. Tata's design team has given the SUV secondary tail lamps (warning lamps), which are located behind the boot lid. They will be able to give warning to other vehicles even when the boot is open. It also has red puddle lamps, which were also available in the original SUV.

collision with creta
Being a compact SUV, the new Sierra will face tough competition from the Hyundai Creta, which is currently the leader in the segment. The company says that Sierra will offer more features than Creta. It has been designed and engineered to be more premium and desirable than the Creta (and other mid-size SUVs like Seltos, Grand Vitara, Urban Cruiser Highrider etc.). EV version will also come soon. All-electric version of Sierra will also be launched soon. Tata Motors has already shown its design. The market launch is expected in the coming months.

India's first SUV was launched 34 years ago, hard to believe the price, now it will make a comeback in a new avatar!

New Delhi. There are many options for SUV cars in the current Indian market. You can choose your car according to your budget and choice. There was a time when sedan and hatchback cars used to dominate the Indian market. Now SUV models are dominating the market. But do you know which was India's first SUV? When was it launched? And how much did it cost? If not, let us know.

Tata Sierra: India's first SUV
Tata Motors' Sierra car was India's first SUV which was launched in 1991. That means 34 years ago. At the time of launch, this car was a completely different car in itself. No other such model existed in India. The entire concept of SUV was new in India.

How much did the first SUV cost?
At the time of its launch in 1991, the price of this SUV was Rs 5 lakh. In today's times, this price may seem quite low but it was not so. This was a huge amount in 1991 and with this price, this car was counted among the most expensive cars of that era.

Return on 25th November
The most important thing is that the company is once again going to launch Tata Sierra in the Indian market in a new avatar. This car will be officially presented by Tata Motors in India on 25th November.

Why was Sierra special?

indigenous engineering

It was the first Indian car to be designed and engineered entirely for personal use, keeping the Indian market in mind. Earlier, the jeeps available in the market were either foreign designs or were primarily built for utility purposes.

Features ahead of time

Sierra was way ahead of its time. This was the first car in India in which features like power windows and adjustable steering wheel were provided. It was also available with factory-fitted air conditioning (AC).

Powerful and offroad capability

It was a 3-door SUV, with its unique identity being the large glass window at the rear (called the Alpine Window). It was built on body-on-frame construction, which made it very strong and suitable for rough roads. It also had the option of 4×4 (four-wheel drive) variant, which made it an excellent off-roading SUV.

engine:

Initially it came with a 2.0-litre diesel engine. Later, the company also introduced a turbocharged diesel engine (2.0-litre, 87 bhp) in 1997, which further increased its performance. When the Sierra was launched in 1991, it was priced around or above ₹5 lakh. At that time, popular cars like Maruti 800 were available for ₹1 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh. In comparison, the Sierra was a premium and expensive offering. Due to its high price and three-door design, its sales were not as successful as expected, and production was discontinued in 2003.

Hyundai Creta, the 'queen' of SUVs, does not have these features, Tata Sierra has them in abundance, 'Mahamukabala' will take place on 25th November

New Delhi. Tata Sierra has surprised everyone by showing its presence in the compact SUV segment. The new SUV will compete with the best-seller Hyundai Creta. Today, let's take a look at the features that the Sierra has but the segment's best-seller doesn't. In the coming time, it will be interesting to see how much competition the Sierra SUV can give to the Hyundai Creta.

triple screen display
Tata Sierra gets triple screen display feature for the first time in the segment. While the exact dimensions have not been revealed, it is expected to have a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and 12.3-inch co-passenger screen. In comparison, the Hyundai Creta gets dual 10.25-inch screens for the touchscreen and instrument cluster. Apart from this, Tata Sierra also has the feature of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which is not available in Hyundai Creta.

12-speaker JBL sound system
The design of Sierra has changed a lot. Compared to Hyundai Creta, it has a 12-speaker JBL sound system, whereas the Creta has an 8-speaker Bose sound system. Tata Sierra has another major feature – Sonic Shift Soundbar which is given on the dashboard itself – this feature can offer a different experience for music lovers. Extendable Thigh Support Another big upgrade on the Tata Sierra is the extendable thigh support option on the front seats, which the Creta does not have. Extended thigh-support is a very underrated feature that adds to the comfort of the SUV.

Tata Sierra Vs Hyundai Creta Features
Powered Tailgate with Gesture Control The Tata Sierra gets a powered tailgate with gesture control, and the boot space of the Sierra is expected to be more than that of the Creta. However, exact dimension details will be revealed during its launch. Along with this, warning lights are also available in Sierra.

fast charging
Sierra has Type-C charging and wireless charger, which is also available in Creta. But, the differentiating feature is the 65W fast charger which is included in the Sierra and not in the Creta. Tata Sierra vs Hyundai Creta Features – 19-inch alloy wheels. Tata Sierra gets 19-inch alloy wheels, which is a first in the segment. Whereas 18-inch wheels are available in Creta.

Tata Sierra launch and price
Tata has already revealed the Sierra, but has not announced its price yet. However, the price of this SUV will be revealed on November 25. According to us, the price of Tata Sierra is expected to be between Rs 12 lakh to Rs 23 lakh on-road in Mumbai.
