The 2025 Toyota 4Runner will get an electrically operable roll-down rear window, as shown in the latest teaser

Toyota has dropped a new teaser for its upcoming 4Runner SUV in the US. The Toyota 4Runner is set for a global debut on April 9, 2024, and while the offering is unlikely to make its way to the Indian market, a special feature has caught our attention. The upcoming 4Runner will get an electrically operable roll-down rear window and the new teaser demonstrates the new feature as one of the key highlights of the SUV.

The teaser video shows the rear window rolling down at the touch of a button at the top of the centre console. The feature makes access easier to the boot without having to open the hefty tailgate. This would be particularly useful for adding or removing small bags. Interestingly, the last car that had an openable rear window in India was the first-generation Hyundai Tucson.

Apart from the roll-down rear window, the teaser also previews a large tablet-style freestanding infotainment system on the new-gen 4Runner SUV. The cabin overall will be more up to speed with the newest Toyota offerings, while the model itself is based on the latest TNGA-F truck platform, which also underpins the Land Cruiser, Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, as well as the Lexus GX and LX SUVs. The SUV is about the same size as the Land Cruiser Prado but will be more utilitarian in its appeal.

Engine options expected include a 2.4-litre turbo petrol on the base variant, while a hybrid version could be added later. The current generation Toyota 4Runner has been on sale for the last 15 years and the new-gen model will see a complete overhaul on the SUV. The model continues to clock about 150,000 units every year, which makes it extremely popular in the market.

The recalled units of the Toyota Glanza are suspected to have a faulty fuel pump motor, which could lead to engine stalling

Toyota Kirloskar Motor has issued a voluntary recall for 2,305 units of the Glanza hatchback in the country. The affected Toyota Glanza models were manufactured between April 2 and October 6, 2019, and the defect is related to a faulty fuel pump motor. Toyota said that the recall campaign is in continuation to the one conducted on July 31, 2020.

More recently, Maruti Suzuki recalled 16,000 units of the Baleno for the same reason. Both the Glanza and Baleno share the same underpinnings and are essentially badge-engineered cousins. The models are made by Suzuki for either manufacturer. Toyota said that there could be a possible issue with the fuel pump motor in the affected vehicles, which could lead to engine stalling.

Toyota will reach out to customers of the affected vehicles and will carry out the rectification under the recall campaign procedures. The complete process will be free of cost. The popular hatchback comes with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine tuned for 89 bhp and 113 Nm of peak torque. It’s paired with either a 5-speed manual or an AMT unit. Toyota also offers a CNG version, making the Glanza its most affordable CNG model in the country. The Toyota Glanza is priced from 6.86 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) onwards.

Toyota is all set to expand its portfolio on April 3, 2024, with another badge-engineered offering. The company will introduce the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor, based on the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, which will come with different styling, while carrying the same interior and underpinnings. More details on the Taisor will be available soon, so make sure to keep watching this space for all the action.

Toyota temporarily halts bookings for the Rumion CNG due to overwhelming demand

Toyota Kirloskar Motor has announced that it has decided to temporarily halt bookings for the new Rumion E-CNG variant in the country. This has been done due to the overwhelming response for the MPV. The Toyota Rumion is a rebadged Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the company says the CNG variants are witnessing a strong demand. Toyota did not disclose the number of bookings received so far for the Rumion E-CNG.

Toyota Rumion gets few cosmetic changes when compared to the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and is offered with pure-petrol and CNG options

Meanwhile, bookings for the Toyota Rumion petrol will continue, the company confirmed. The Rumion draws power from the 1.5-litre K-Series petrol engine paired with manual and automatic transmission options. It’s made by Maruti for itself and Toyota. The Toyota Rumion is priced from 10.29 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards.

A statement from Toyota read, “We launched the All-New Toyota Rumion in August this year and have received an overwhelming response from our customers who have been waiting for a Toyota vehicle in the B-MPV segment. We are heartened to see the increasing inflow of enquiries and healthy bookings for the All New Toyota Rumion. The demand has surpassed our expectations, resulting in a long delivery time across variants, especially for the E-CNG option. This has necessitated us to temporarily halt bookings of the E-CNG option ONLY to avoid customer inconvenience due to a longer waiting period. However, we continue to accept bookings for the PETROL (NeoDrive) variants of the All-New Toyota Rumion.

As a brand that is deeply committed to delivering the best experience to its valued customers, we will continue to regularly assess the situation and do our best to resume the order booking of the said variant at the earliest. We appreciate our customer’s understanding as we work towards meeting the market demand in a timely and most suitable manner.”

Urban Cruiser Taisor nameplate trademarked in India. Is this Toyota’s Fronx-based SUV?

Urban Cruiser Taisor nameplate trademarked in India. Is this Toyota’s Fronx-based SUV?

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has trademarked the ‘Urban Cruiser Taisor’ nameplate in India and it’s quite likely that this will be the name of the automaker’s upcoming subcompact SUV. The automaker exited the subcompact SUV space with the discontinuation of the Urban Cruiser (badge-engineered Vitara Brezza) and will re-enter with another badge-engineered Maruti, the Fronx. This is expected to be the brand’s next launch after the Toyota Rumion.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor name has been trademarked, which stems the possibility of a new subcompact SUV based on the Maruti Suzuki Fronx

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx shares its underpinnings with the new generation Baleno but gets a more butch look inspired by the Grand Vitara. It won’t be surprising if Toyota opts for a styling similar to its Urban Cruiser Hyryder. What we do know is that the Fronx and the upcoming Taisor are likely to share most components, as badge-engineered models tend to be. Expect to see a revised grille, tailgate, bumpers, and new alloys among subtle styling updates to make it visually different from the Maruti Suzuki Fronx.

The cabin will largely retain the same design and equipment levels with minor tweaks including new upholstery, colours and more. The Fronx is fairly loaded with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 360-degree camera, a head-up display, wireless charging and more.

The Fronx is offered with two engine options including the 1.0-litre BoosterJet turbo petrol with 99 bhp and 147 Nm of peak torque, as well as the more popular 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol with 88 bhp. It’s unclear as to which engine option will be offered on Taisor. Both engines are paired with a 5-speed manual. Automatic transmission options include a 6-speed torque converter on the turbo petrol, whereas the 1.2 NA uses a more cost-effective 5-speed AMT.

If Toyota opts to retail the turbo petrol engine, it will be a first for the automaker in India. That said, a CNG variant is also likely to join the stable considering it’s already available on the Fronx. The Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor is expected to arrive around the festive period this year. But before that, the automaker is gearing up to introduce the Rumion, which is another badge-engineered offering based on the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. The company will also begin deliveries of the Vellfire from November onwards.

The fifth-gen Toyota Land Cruiser Prado will take several cues from the J60 generation Land Cruiser produced in the 1980s

The fifth-generation Toyota Land Cruiser Prado will be badged as just the ‘Land Cruiser’ in North American markets, while all other markets including India will continue to use the Prado name. The latest teaser reveals a more detailed look at the new Land Cruiser Prado like the squared-off headlamps, rectangular grille with the egg grate design and the ‘Toyota’ badging in the centre.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado will be sharing its underpinnings with the Lexus GX that made its global debut earlier this year. Expect the new Prado to be as boxy as the GX including the LED taillights that will also get a retro appearance. Both seem to be inspired by the J60 generation Land Cruiser built in the 1980s. Much like its predecessors, the new Land Cruiser Prado will also be a three-row SUV.

The new-gen offering will be based on Toyota’s TNGA-F platform with powertrain options ranging from petrol, petrol-hybrid and diesel depending on the market. India is expected to get the new-gen Land Cruiser Prado in the future, possibly with only the diesel engine. The automaker introduced the new-generation Land Cruiser 300 late last year and the SUV was quick to be sold out despite its high price tag of 2.10 crore (ex-showroom, India). Interestingly, the Lexus GX is also likely to make its way to the Indian market in a few months from now.
