Maruti Ertiga vs Toyota Rumion: Which 7-seater MPV has more power?

Both Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota Roomian are 7-seater MPVs, which are the best option for large families. Actually Roomian is a rebadged version of Ertiga. That means both are built on the same platform. Still, there are some differences in design, price, features and branding.

On one hand, Ertiga starts at just ₹ 8.80 lakh (LXi petrol) and the top variant (ZXi+ AT) goes up to ₹ 12.94 lakh. Whereas, Rumion starts from ₹ 9.56 lakh (E/S variant) and goes up to ₹ 13.86 lakh (V AT). Rumian is expensive around ₹70,000 to ₹1 lakh. Let us know what is the difference between these two?

Design and dimensions

The exterior of both the cars is quite similar, but Roomian has Toyota's premium touch. The front grille of the Roomian is trapezoidal like the Innova Crysta. There is a new bumper, fog lamps and new 15-inch alloy wheels. In length, the Rumion is slightly longer (4420 mm) while the Ertiga is 4395 mm. The rear is almost identical, only the badging is different. The styling of the Ertiga is classic Maruti, while the Roomian looks more premium and with chrome accents.

Cabin and Comfort

The cabin is almost completely identical. Dual tone dashboard, 7-seater flexible layout, 60:40 split second row and good space. The third row is also suitable for adults. Boot space is 209 litres. The beige color theme looks brighter in Ertiga, whereas the Roomian has a grey/dark tone. Both have the same 7-inch touchscreen, steering and AC vents. The Roomien has more cup holders and a better finishing touch in some variants.

Features and safety

Both have features like wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, auto climate control (top variant), cruise control, keyless entry, rear camera and power windows. The Roomian has the added benefit of Toyota Connected App (remote AC, location) and Arkamys audio. Ertiga has third row 12V socket and more variant options. Overall the features are 90% similar, but Roomian gives a premium feel.

Both have 6 airbags, ABS, EBD, ESP, hill hold, ISOFIX and rear camera as standard. The Ertiga has a global NCAP rating of 3-star (1-star in some earlier tests). Rumian is not tested separately. An improved TPMS (tire pressure monitoring) is also available in the Rumion. The safety of both is good.

Engine and Mileage

Both have the same 1.5 liter K15C petrol engine (102 PS power, 137-139 Nm torque), which comes with mild hybrid technology. It can be purchased with 5-speed manual or 6-speed auto transmission and CNG kit. ARAI claimed mileage is up to 20.51 kmpl in petrol and 26.11 km/kg in CNG.

As of now, Toyota is selling the rebadged version of the Glanza. Apart from this, the manufacturers also share vehicles like the Grand Vitara and Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Invicto and Innova Hycross. Now, Toyota is working on launching the Rumion in the Indian market, it will be the rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and soon go on sale in the Indian market.

2023 Toyota Rumion: Cosmetic changes

Toyota has made some changes to the Rumion so that it can be differentiated from the Ertiga. It now comes with a new grille that is inspired by the Innova. The front bumper has been redesigned. It gets a chrome surround that gives an up-market look to the MPV. Apart from this, the alloy wheels are new. They are finished in a two-toned machined finish.

2023 Toyota Rumion: Powertrain

Toyota will be offering the Rumion with two powertrains. There is petrol and CNG. Both use a Maruti-derived 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine. While running on petrol, it produces 101 bhp of max power at 6,000 rpm and a peak torque output of 136.8 Nm at 4,400 rpm. On CNG, the power is decreased to 86.63 bhp at 5,500 rpm and the peak torque output falls to 121.5 Nm at 4,200 rpm.

As standard, both powertrains get a 5-speed manual gearbox. The petrol engine will also be offered with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission with paddle shifters mounted behind the steering wheel.

2023 Toyota Rumion: Safety equipment

Toyota Rumion uses the Heartect platform and is offered with dual front airbags and front side airbags as standard. There is an Anti-lock braking system with Electronic Brake Distribution, Brake Assist, Engine immobilizer, Electronic Stability Program and Hill Hold. Apart from this, there are front seatbelts with pretensioners and force limiters, seatbelt reminders and a high-speed alert system.

2023 Toyota Rumion: Features

In terms of features, the Rumion will come with automatic climate control, steering-mounted controls, second-row AC, a 17.78 cm Smartplay touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, LED tail lamps and much more.

2023 Toyota Rumion: Price and variants

The Rumion will be available in six variants of S MT/AT, G MT, and V MT/AT, S MT CNG offering a wide range of options for customers. However, Toyota has not yet announced the prices of the MPV.
