Triumph Thruxton 400 in the works? New spy shots reveal upcoming 400 cc cafe racer

[ad_1]

Bajaj Auto and Triumph Motorcycles launched the maiden motorcycles from the partnership with the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X off to a good start. The bikes are made in India and will be sold globally as the most affordable Triumph bikes. It now seems the British bike maker is working on a third motorcycle as per the latest spy shots that surfaced on the internet. The new spy images reveal a cafe racer based on the Triumph Speed 400 in the works, which could be the new Triumph Thruxton 400.

The latest images reveal the motorcycle to be identical to the Triumph Speed 400, while the biggest addition is the bubble-type fairing on the motorcycle. The old-school fairing appears similar to the one on the Triumph Speed Triple RR, which could also serve as an inspiration for the entry-level cafe racer.

The test mule also reveals clip-on handlebars in place of a flat handlebar, while the rest of the bodywork including the fuel tank, side panels and tail section have been carried over. The riding posture also appears more dedicated thanks to the clip-ons, while the foot pegs remain slightly rear-set, like the Speed 400.

Triumph Motorcycles is all set to end the production of the Thruxton 1200 at the end of 2024 and it will be really interesting to see if the name could be revived for a brand new cafe racer based on the 400 platform. The bike is expected to continue using the 399 cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled motor that belts out 39.5 bhp at 8,000 rpm and 37.5 Nm of peak torque at 6,500 rpm on the Speed and Scrambler 400. The engine is paired with a 6-speed gearbox.

The Triumph Thruxton 400 will not only bring a more retro flair but also bring more visual volume to the motorcycle, which is otherwise missing on the tightly packaged Speed 400. Official details are yet to be confirmed but we expect Triumph to announce the motorcycle sometime next year. The company is currently working on commencing exports for the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X to Europe, while the Thruxton 400 could arrive globally by mid-2024 or in the second half of the year.

While the Triumph Speed 400 is more road-biased over the adventure-ready Scrambler 400 X, both bikes share the same engine, semi-digital instrument console, all-LED lighting and a 13-litre fuel tank. Coming to differences, the Speed 400’s design is inspired by the Speed Twin and gets smaller 17-inch alloy wheels with a lower seat height.

The Triumph Scrambler 400 X is inspired by the Scrambler 900 and 1200 and comes with 19-inch and 17-inch rear alloy wheels. There’s also Ride-by-Wire with switchable traction control, while dual-channel ABS is standard with the option to turn off the rear ABS on the Scrambler.

Triumph Scrambler 400 X
Triumph Scrambler 400 X does have more road presence than the Speed 400. This is mostly because of the exhaust, accessories and height.

The 2024 Triumph Speed 400 is priced at 26,900 Ringgit (approx. 4.80 lakh), while the Triumph Scrambler 400 X is priced at 29,900 Ringgit (approx. 5.33 lakh) in Malaysia. That’s substantially more expensive than the Indian versions. The new Triumph Speed 400 will take on the KTM 390 Duke, Modenas Dominar 400 (Bajaj Dominar 400 in India), BMW G 310 R, Kawasaki Z400 and the like. The Triumph Scrambler 400 X will take on the Royal Enfield Scram 411, BMW G 310 GS, and the upcoming Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 in the same space.

The company previously had 15 operational dealers pan India, and it plans to increase to 50 outlets by October, and up to 100 by March 2024 across 80 cities. The strategy will also help bolster the company’s operations right time for the Triumph Scrambler 400 X’s arrival in two months.

Currently, Bajaj Auto is ramping up production of the Triumph Speed 400 at its Chakan 2 facility to meet the growing demand. The plant has an installed production capacity of 5,000 units for Triumph motorcycles, which could be increased further to address the demand. That said, production will be increased in a staggered manner, the company had clarified earlier.

Triumph Speed 400: Why is it so affordable?
