Only 40 cars sold in October
Tesla, which opened its first showroom in India in July, sold 40 cars in October, taking total sales to 104 units. The company had delivered 64 units in September. The American electric vehicle (EV) maker is currently offering only the Model Y SUV in India.
FADA statistics
According to Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) data, India's EV market recorded retail sales of 18,055 units in October, compared to 15,329 units in September, registering a month-on-month (mom) growth of 17.78%.
37.5% decline
However, Tesla's retail sales declined by 37.5% in October. The company currently has two showrooms in India, one at Maker Maxity in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex and the other at Worldmark 3 in Aerocity, New Delhi. Tesla's entry into the Indian EV market is still in its early stages, but the Model Y's pricing makes it competitive against luxury electric SUVs from Mercedes-Benz and BMW.
Why is Tesla expensive in India?
The Model Y is offered in India as a completely built unit (CBU) and is available in rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration. It comes in two variants – Standard RWD which is priced at Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom) and Long Range RWD which is priced at Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Due to high import duty in India, these prices are much higher than global markets.
