Maruti Suzuki has quietly discontinued its entry-level Nexa car Ignis in India. Amidst the continuously falling sales and increasing micro-SUV trend, the company is now preparing to play a big bet. The new Y43 SUV may arrive soon to compete with Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter. If you were thinking of buying Ignis, this could be your last chance. Know the complete news.
Maruti Ignis has been discontinued.
Maruti Suzuki has quietly discontinued its popular micro-hatchback Ignis in India. According to dealer sources, production has been stopped more than a month ago and most dealerships have now stopped taking new bookings. However, Ignis is still listed on the company's official website, with ex-showroom prices starting from Rs 5.35 lakh to Rs 7.55 lakh. This is mainly to sell the remaining stock.
Ignis was launched in January 2017. This was the cheapest car sold under the Nexa network. Its unit design, high ground clearance and attractive look for young customers made it very popular in the cities. Initially there were 1.2 liter petrol and 1.3 liter diesel engine options, but the diesel variant was discontinued in 2018. It received a minor facelift in 2020, which included some styling and feature updates.
Customers were not available
Ignis was never a big success in terms of sales. Its peak year was 2022, when about 51,000 units were sold. After that sales continued to decline. In February 2026, there was a decline of about 50 percent in sales on an annual basis. Maruti revised the prices, but demand did not improve. The main reasons were less updates, lack of features and rapid growth of micro-SUV segment in the market. Customers have now shifted towards vehicles like Tata Punch and Hyundai Exeter, which offer better road presence, safety and user-appeal.
Preparation to bring small SUV
Maruti Suzuki does not want to leave this segment empty. The company is working on a new sub-compact SUV, whose internal codename is Y43. It will be a direct rival of Tata Punch and Hyundai Exeter. The Y43 is expected to be launched in late 2026 or early 2027. This will be a B-segment SUV, which is likely to include modern features, better safety and reliable engine technology of Maruti.
Special opportunity for Ignis lovers!
The discontinuation of Ignis will bring changes in Nexa's entry-level portfolio. Dealers can give huge discounts on the remaining stock, so customers who liked Ignis can take advantage by acting quickly. However, the company is unlikely to revive the Ignis name. Y43 may come as its spiritual successor.
