Road accidents have taken a horrific form in India. According to the data, during the year 2025, 1,83,382 people lost their lives in the entire country, that is, an average of 21 people are dying in road accidents every hour. 502 deaths have been recorded daily. The total number of road accidents increased by 5.30 percent to 5,13,563, which means 59 accidents are happening every hour.
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has given these figures in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. These figures show the serious situation of road safety. The participation of two-wheelers is highest. The main reasons are increasing population, number of vehicles and lack of adherence to traffic rules. The government has also made a strategy to deal with this problem. However, these records show that much improvement is still needed.

A total of 5,13,563 road accidents were recorded in 2025, which is much more than in 2024. Of these, 1,83,382 deaths occurred. An average of 502 deaths every day and 21 deaths every hour underlines the seriousness of this problem.
state wise status
Tamil Nadu has recorded the highest number of road accidents at 71,387, while Uttar Pradesh has recorded the highest number of deaths at 27,550. This situation has arisen due to high traffic density and number of vehicles in both the states.

In 2023, there were 1,72,890 deaths in 4,80,583 accidents. In 2024, this number increased to 4,87,707 accidents and 1,77,175 deaths. In 2025, this figure has now increased significantly to 5,13,563.

According to Nitin Gadkari, the Central Government has adopted '4E' strategy for road safety. This includes Education (Education), Engineering (Engineering of roads and vehicles), Enforcement (Enforcement) and Emergency Care (Emergency Care).
