The premium compact SUV segment in India has two different approaches to practicality. The new third-generation Audi Q3, which has made its India debut ahead of its launch later this year, brings a redesigned exterior, a heavily updated cabin and more technology. The BMW X1 LWB, meanwhile, takes the existing X1 formula and stretches it to offer more room for rear passengers.

With the Q3 expected to cost around Rs 60 lakh (ex-showroom) and the X1 LWB already priced at Rs 49.90 lakh (ex-showroom), the two SUVs are separated not only by dimensions but also by what they prioritise. Here is how the Audi Q3 and BMW X1 LWB compare on design, interior, engine and price.

Audi Q3 vs BMW X1 LWB: Design

The new Audi Q3 gets the more substantial visual overhaul of the two. It measures 4,531mm in length, 1,859mm in width and 1,623mm in height, with a 2,681mm wheelbase.

Its front end features split LED headlamps positioned above a wide grille, while the lower bumper gets a honeycomb-patterned air intake and silver skid plate. At the rear, split tail-lamps are connected by an LED light strip, with an illuminated Audi logo sitting between them.

The BMW X1 LWB, in comparison, retains the familiar X1 design but extends the body to 4,616mm. Its 2,800mm wheelbase is 108mm longer than the standard X1, making the stretched proportions quite easy to spot.

The Q3 gets Audi’s curved Digital Stage, combining an 11.9-inch Virtual Cockpit with a 12.8-inch MMI touchscreen. The gear selector has moved to the steering column, freeing up space between the front seats. Other highlights include a Sonos sound system, panoramic sunroof, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control and a 360-degree camera.

The BMW counters with a curved widescreen display running BMW Operating System 9, a floating centre console, wireless smartphone charging and a Harman Kardon sound system. Its biggest advantage, however, is space. The X1 LWB offers 109mm more knee room for rear passengers, along with wider rear openings and larger rear corner windows.

Audi Q3 vs BMW X1 LWB: Engine and Performance

For India, the Q3 is expected to continue with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 202bhp and 320Nm, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and quattro all-wheel drive.
