Pure electric models lead electrified car sales in India in the first half of the year, with homegrown automakers holding the maximum market share

Hybrid cars have long been leading electrification in many key auto markets worldwide, but India is one of the exceptions. With a much wider selection of models and a significantly lower tax rate, pure electric cars are outselling hybrids by a wide margin in the country.

In the first half of 2026, electric car sales were more than twice as high as hybrid car sales. To be specific 1,48,023 electric cars were delivered during the January-June 2026 period, as opposed to 57,855 hybrid cars. Electric cars are not only outselling hybrid cars but also seeing a significant growth in consumer adoption.

Compared to 82,535 electric cars sold in the first half of 2025, sales were up 79% in the January-June 2026 period. JSW MG Motor, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility are the companies driving the majority of this growth, having flooded the market with a host of new models over the last few years.

The MG Windsor was the best-selling electric car in India in the first half of the year, with 19,080 units delivered. Interestingly, the Mahindra XEV 9S, a premium three-row model, occupied the second position on the sales chart, with 18,074 units delivered. Most of its configurations cost more than double the average selling price of new cars. The even more expensive Mahindra XEV 9e ranked fifth, with 11,242 units delivered. Tata Motors’ Nexon.ev and Punch.ev occupied fourth and fifth positions, with 16,567 units and 15,683 units sold, respectively.

As for hybrid cars, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) and Maruti Suzuki dominate this space. The Toyota Innova Hycross was the best-selling hybrid car in India in H1 2026, with 27,812 delivered. The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder ranked second, with 18,577 units delivered. Maruti Suzuki’s Grand Vitara, Victoris, and Invicto occupied the third, fourth, and fifth positions on the sales chart, with 4,086, 3,231, and 1,418 units delivered, respectively.

While choices in the hybrid car segment are very limited, that’s about to change soon. Kia recently launched the Sorento Hybrid with competitive pricing, and it will launch a significantly more affordable Seltos Hybrid next year. Renault will launch the Duster Hybrid as its first hybrid model in India close to Diwali, and that is expected to be competitively priced as well. The company’s three-row SUV arriving next year would also be available with a hybrid system. Also expected in 2027 is the first-ever Hyundai Creta Hybrid, which would be a variant of the upcoming third-generation model.
