New Delhi. After Delhi, now it seems that Mumbai can also ban both petrol and diesel cars. The Maharashtra government has now formed a panel to do research on this matter and to find the possibility of banning petrol and diesel vehicles in Mumbai metropolis. There are 7 members in this panel. Officers want to ban petrol and diesel vehicles and allow only CNG and electric vehicles in the metropolitan region. This decision has been taken to control the city's deteriorating air quality.

Apart from the city of Mumbai, Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) includes areas of Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts. IAS officer Sudhir Kumar Srivastava is leading the new panel. The team will do research and submit a report with findings and recommendations in three months.

The government proposal to organize this research was passed on 22 January this year. The proposal states that the committee has the ability to include experts in this field as fellow members to do research and give feedback. All this started when the Bombay High Court has a automatic cognizance public interest on 9 January Decided to start the hearing of the petition. The court expressed concern over the increasing pollution and increasing traffic crowd in the area. It also questioned the impact of these issues on the living standard and environment of the people.

What did the High Court say?
The High Court said that vehicles are the main reasons for pollution in the city and said that the current measures taken by the government to prevent pollution are not enough. Following the High Court's comment, the state government decided to set up a committee of experts to do this research whether to ban petrol and diesel vehicles is a practical option. The committee was also asked to investigate whether it would be beneficial to allow only CNG and electric vehicles in MMR.

Committee has been formed earlier also
After this, the government formed a new committee. This is not the first time that the Maharashtra government has created such a panel. Nearly two decades ago, the state government formed the VM Lal Committee to address vehicle pollution in Mumbai. The panel was tasked to identify the causes of pollution and their impact on public health. It was also responsible for suggesting measures to reduce pollution.
