Despite having the same working principle, AWD and 4WD are fundamentally different technologies meant for providing additional traction and channelling power to multiple axles or wheels.

The automotive industry is full of complex and interesting jargon. AWD and 4WD are two of them. AWD means All-Wheel Drive, while the 4WD means 4 Wheel Drive. Interestingly, a large number of car buyers and car owners think both the AWD and 4WD are the same. However, this is a misconception. While the underlying principles of both these two technologies are driving all the wheels of a car, AWD and 4WD are not the same.

Here is a comprehensive explainer to help you understand the differences between AWD and 4WD.

All-Wheel-Drive (AWD)

The All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) system powers all the four wheels of your car. There are two types of AWD systems, either the full-time AWD or part-time AWD. In full-time AWD, the system powers both the front and rear wheels all the time. On the other hand, the part-time AWD powers either the front or the rear wheels all the time. In both these two different types of AWD systems, the driver has no control over the power output a wheel or the set of wheels receive.

Based on the data received from a range of sensors, an onboard computer decides the amount of power, gauging the traction status of each wheel’s tyres. If the computer senses a certain wheel requires more power than the available amount, the AWD system sends additional torque instantly. In this process, the AWD system maximises the car’s traction in different driving conditions.

4-Wheel Drive (4WD)

The fundamental logic behind the 4-Wheel Drive (4WD) system is the same as the AWD, which is powering all the wheels. However, deep delving, the 4WD powers all four wheels of the car, with the energy channelled equally to the front and rear wheels. There are two types of 4WD systems, just like the AWD. These are full-time 4WD and part-time 4WD.

In full-time 4WD, all four wheels of the vehicle are powered at all times, while in part-time 4WD, generally the rear wheels are powered continuously with power sent to the front wheels only when needed. This is the area where the 4WD differs from an AWD, as the decision to send power to a set of wheels is taken by the driver manually through a button or a lever, not the vehicle’s onboard computer.

Additionally, a 4WD system gets two different modes, which are low-range and high-range. While the low-range mode is useful to maximise traction in low-speed or intense off-road situations, the the high-range mode improves traction in less intense off-roading and in slippery driving conditions like loose sand, gravel, and snow or ice.

Ni hao, fly now: After dominating EV space, China sets sights on flying cars

  • A number of Chinese firms are looking at dictating the course which aim to turn flying cars into reality.
File photo of AirCar flying car during the course of its maiden test flight in Slovakia.

China is the world’s largest vehicle market. China is the world’s largest electric vehicle market. And it is likely that the country may take a lead in the fast-developing world of flying cars as well. A number of China-based companies are working on either developing models or procuring the technologies that would turn the ultimate dream in personal mobility sphere into reality.

In prime focus is Cangzhou-based company called Hebei Jianxin Flying Car Technology that recently bought exclusive rights to build AirCar, a flying car that successfully conducted its maiden test flight in 2020 and completed an inter city flight in 2021. Developed by Slovakia-based company called Klein Vision, AirCar will now serve as the basis on which Hebei Jianxin Flying Car Technology will develop its own versions of flying cars. These will be used for flights within pre-defined areas within the Chinese territory, according to the BBC.

Also Read : How flying cars can take over global farms, covering one acre every minute

The AirCar from Klein Vision is capable of operation on both surface as well as in the air. Its dimensions are similar to a conventional vehicle and is powered by a BMW-sourced engine. But it takes all of 120 seconds to transform into a flying machine that can travel an air distance of 1,000 kms at an altitude of 8,200 feet. It is also entirely capable of making maneuvers during flight time although it will require a runway and is not capable of vertical lift-off and landing.

Chinese dreams of flying cars take flight

While Hebei Jianxin Flying Car Technology now has the exclusive rights to build AirCar aircraft inside an undisclosed area in China, noticeable moves have been made by rival companies here too.

A Chinese company called Autoflight tested a drone capable of flying passengers. The drone was flown between Shenzhen and Zhuhai and completed the distance in 20 minutes. It would have taken around three hours to cover the distance between the two Chinese cities by road.

Then there is another company called eHang which received a safety certificate from officials in the country for a flying taxi powered by batteries.

All of these developments show that China has the potential to pave the way for flying cars to take over skies, both in the country and the world over. Experts and industry watchers point out that flying cars are inevitable and the only two big questions that remain are how to make these mobility options more cost viable and the regulations and supporting infrastructure that would be required.

Kia Carens, Kia Carens EV, Kia Clavis, Kia AY EV SUV, India launch details

Apart from two mass market EVs, Kia will also bring the EV9 flagship SUV to India.

Ho Sung Song, Kia president and CEO announced at its Investor Day 2024 that two new models, including the Carens EV, will be launched in emerging markets like India to meet diverse demands. He also informed that the company will be launching the EV9 in India – its flagship – in 2024 to spruce up its EV play.

“The EV line-up strategy involves following up our flagship EV models with the introduction of mass EV models for enhanced consumer accessibility,” he said.

  1. Kia to bring two mass market EVs in India
  2. Kia Clavis EV and Carens EV will launch in second half of 2025

Kia Carens EV, Clavis EV to launch in second half of 2025

Sources say that the company is likely to launch a mass market electric SUV codenamed AY-EV, which will likely be called Kia Clavis upon its launch in the second half of 2025. Around the same time, it is also planning to bring in the Carens-based EV, codenamed the KY-EV.

Interestingly, the Kia AY SUV with a petrol powertrain is likely to hit the roads in the first half of 2025, and Kia estimates that both EV models are likely to bring in combined volumes of 50,000-60,000 units by 2026.

Kia has aggressive sales plans for EVs

“The goal for 2026 is to achieve sales of 5,87,000 units of mass EV models, with the aim of accounting for 66 percent of total EV sales,” Song added. As for the market-specific sales strategies, in key markets, Kia will continue growth by building a full EV line-up by creating new demand using Purpose Built Vehicles (PBVs). “In emerging markets, we will differentiate the brand with enhanced high-quality customer experiences and respond to increasing demand by diversifying manufacturing bases,” he explained.

The flexible manufacturing line and ICE-derived EVs are a part of Kia’s plan to de-risk itself if the sales momentum for EVs does not take off. “While short-term concerns about EV demand slowdown may exist, in the long-term, EV demand is expected to continue to grow considering the global CO2 reduction regulations and the downward trend of EV prices,” Song said.

Kia’s future EV launch plans

Overall, a total of 15 EV models have been decided for a launch by 2027. Beginning with the launch of the EV3 this year, additional models such as the EV2, EV4 and EV5 will be introduced in major markets, for a total of 6 mass-market models.

“The EV sales target of 1.6 million units by 2030 requires selling 1.3 million more units than 2024. The proportion of EV sales in major markets is planned to grow from 13 percent in 2024 to 52 percent by 2030, with the Korean and North American markets reaching up to 40 percent, and Europe up to 79 percent,” shared Song, but he did not have specifics on the Indian market’s volumes or share of EVs.

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner will get an electrically operable roll-down rear window, as shown in the latest teaser

Toyota has dropped a new teaser for its upcoming 4Runner SUV in the US. The Toyota 4Runner is set for a global debut on April 9, 2024, and while the offering is unlikely to make its way to the Indian market, a special feature has caught our attention. The upcoming 4Runner will get an electrically operable roll-down rear window and the new teaser demonstrates the new feature as one of the key highlights of the SUV.

The teaser video shows the rear window rolling down at the touch of a button at the top of the centre console. The feature makes access easier to the boot without having to open the hefty tailgate. This would be particularly useful for adding or removing small bags. Interestingly, the last car that had an openable rear window in India was the first-generation Hyundai Tucson.

Apart from the roll-down rear window, the teaser also previews a large tablet-style freestanding infotainment system on the new-gen 4Runner SUV. The cabin overall will be more up to speed with the newest Toyota offerings, while the model itself is based on the latest TNGA-F truck platform, which also underpins the Land Cruiser, Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, as well as the Lexus GX and LX SUVs. The SUV is about the same size as the Land Cruiser Prado but will be more utilitarian in its appeal.

Engine options expected include a 2.4-litre turbo petrol on the base variant, while a hybrid version could be added later. The current generation Toyota 4Runner has been on sale for the last 15 years and the new-gen model will see a complete overhaul on the SUV. The model continues to clock about 150,000 units every year, which makes it extremely popular in the market.

NX 350h Overtrail edition gets chunkier tyres and an exclusive paint scheme.

Lexus India has launched the NX 350h Overtrail edition at Rs 71.17 lakh (ex-showroom, India), which is outdoors-inspired and gets minor updates reflect that.

Lexus NX 350h Overtrail exterior

The Lexus 350h Overtrail edition is available in a single, exclusive paint shade called ‘Moon Desert’, which is similar to the paint scheme seen on the Thar Earth Edition. The Lexus Overtrail also gets specific blacked-out exterior elements such as the grille, wing mirrors, door handles and roof rails. Since the SUV is more focused on the outdoors, the company has given it a new set of alloys and tyres. While the NX 350h F-Sport, Exquisite and Luxury ride on 235/50 tyres and 20-inch alloys, the Overtrail gets 18-inch matte black alloys shod with 235/60-section tyres, which the brand claims will improve driving on broken roads.

Lexus NX350h Overtrail interior

On the inside, the NX 350h gets a synthetic black leather interior with earthy-coloured highlights on trim pieces such as the front armrest, seat edges and door panel. Equipment-wise, the NX 350h gets a leather-wrapped steering wheel with a heating function, electrically adjustable seats, ventilated front seats, a powered tailgate, Mark Levinson 17-speaker audio system, an ADAS suite and more.

Lexus NX 350h Overtrail powertrain and suspension

Like the Lexus NX 350h F-Sport, the Overtrail edition also gets the brand’s variable dampers system, however, other things remain the same. The SUV is powered by a 2.5-litre petrol engine that’s mated to two electric motors, one in the front and one in the rear, with a total system output of 243hp. Power is transferred to all wheels via a 6-step e-CVT gearbox.

Lexus NX 350h Overtrail rivals

The NX 350h rivals other luxury SUVs like the Audi Q5 (Rs 65.18 lakh), BMW X3 (Rs 68.5 lakh), Mercedes-Benz GLC (Rs 74.45 lakh) and Volvo XC60 (Rs 68.9 lakh).

Tesla has kicked off production for India-bound electric cars at its Giga Berlin facility, claims an HT report. The electric car manufacturer has started producing right-hand drive cars for the Indian market in its Berlin factory and hopes to have them on the roads of this country by the end of 2024, the report has stated quoting a person familiar with the OEM’s plans. Produced in a small number, these electric cars would be used as test prototypes in the Indian environment. However, the person didn’t reveal which models of the auto company are being produced as the Indian market-spec right-hand driver versions. Expect the EVs like Model 3 and Model Y to reach Indian shores.

Interestingly, this news comes immediately on the heels of the report that Tesla is sending a team to India in the third week of April to scout for locations to set up its manufacturing facility in the country. The OEM is reportedly planning to set up its India plant with an investment of about $3 billion.

The report stated that Tesla is working on its India plan in two dimensions, export and manufacturing dimensions. This comes after the Indian government announced its new EV policy in March this year, in which the customs duties for importing electric cars were reduced to boost electric mobility in India as well as local manufacturing. Also, this policy mandated that the OEMs could enjoy lower customs duty only if they set up manufacturing facilities in India with a certain level of investment. The Indian government linked the policy to a simultaneous manufacturing investment commitment above a certain threshold, within a specified period, and with a strong localisation of the supply chain as well.

In November 2023, it was reported that Tesla was working on its proposed most affordable car, which is likely to be a two-door sedan or SUV, which is specially focused on the Indian market. This affordable EV is meant to debut in Germany and India will be the second market for the car. This electric car is meant to be manufactured in Giga Berlin only. However, with the Indian market in focus, it will be later produced in Tesla’s intended India manufacturing plant as well.

Tesla is reportedly considering Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu for its intended India manufacturing plant site, primarily because these are coastal states with major ports, which will allow Tesla to export the cars produced locally in the country to overseas markets. The report further stated that Tesla will possibly make the largest foreign direct investment in India, including a direct and immediate investment of $3 billion to produce its most affordable new small car. Besides that, there would be a $10 billion commitment from its other partners to support this manufacturing ecosystem in the country, and a cumulative $15 billion in the battery industry ecosystem as well.

Actor Ranbir Kapoor brings home the Bentley Continental GT worth over ₹6 crore

Actor Ranbir Kapoor brings home the Bentley Continental GT worth over ₹6 crore

This is Kapoor’s second uber-luxury ride in less than a year after he bought the new-generation Range Rover in August last year. The actor has a penchant for British wheels as his garage seems to suggest. While the Range Rover is his daily driver, the Bentley makes for a special car with its opulence and roaring V8 and W12 engines.

Also Read : Ranbir Kapoor’s new Range Rover SUV: All you need to know

Kapor’s Bentley Continental GT is finished in a fantastic shade of Blue Sapphire. It’s unclear at the moment whether the actor opted for customisation options, which would likely be the case. The Bentley CGT has an extensive options pack and the more boxes you tick, the heavier it gets in the pocket. The two-door offering looks timeless with its twin headlamp design that has evolved over the years, while the rear gets the jewel-themed LED taillights.

The cabin is a mix of old-world charm and new-age technology. The marquee British automaker has retained its luxury quotient with the use of leather upholstery and veneers surrounding the cabin, while the car also comes with electrically adjustable seats, and a 16-channel, 1,550-watt Bang & Olufsen surround sound system. The car also gets the optional Bentley Rotating Display that allows you to customise the instrument console, while there’s a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay. USB-C charging points, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and remote access via the app. The Continental GT also gets Adaptive Cruise Control, lane detection, autonomous parking, night vision camera, park assist and more.

Power on the Grand Tourer comes from the 4.0-litre V8 engine that develops 542 bhp and 770 Nm of peak torque. The model can sprint from 0-100 kmph in 4 seconds with a top speed of 318 kmph. Being a tourer, the Bentley CGT has been designed for long hours of high-speed driving and aims to keep its occupants comfortable.

The Bentley Continental GT brings back a proper exotic to Ranbir’s garage after ages. The actor previously owned the Audi R8 in the initial years of his career. The red Audi performance car was famously gifted to him by his father, the late Rishi Kapoor. He went on to own the Mercedes-Benz G63 in a pristine white shade later. The actor then moved to using the Range Rover for most of this decade.

On the work front, Kapoor is expected to play Lord Ram in the upcoming Ramayan trilogy directed by Nitesh Tiwari of Dangal fame. He will also be seen in Love and War directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and co-starring wife Alia Bhat, along with Vicky Kaushal. There’s also Animal Park, a sequel to Animal in the works, as well as the next two instalments of Brahmastra.

2024 Porsche Taycan facelift review, features, performance, battery, range, charging and comfort – Introduction

2024 Porsche Taycan facelift review, features, performance, battery, range, charging and comfort – Introduction

Upgraded Porsche electric sedan boasts even more power and sees a substantial jump in range.

The Porsche Taycan is a car we know really well. We’ve dragged it, we’ve set lap records in it  and we even drove one from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. The takeaway was always the same. The Taycan is the enthusiast’s electric car. Today, I’m in Sevilla, Spain to see how the story has moved forward. Say hello to the updated Porsche Taycan.

2024 Porsche Taycan: What’s new

In a nutshell, Taycans across the board are faster courtesy power upgrades and there’s a significant increase in range too made possible by a new battery chemistry, larger battery pack (up to 105kWh), enhanced aero, more efficient regen braking and tweaked electronics. Of the three Taycan versions bound for India, the standard Taycan sees power upped to 435hp (from 408hp), 0-100kph is down 6 tenths of a second to 4.8 seconds and range with the optional 105kWh Performance Battery rises 35 percent to 678km (WLTP)!

The Taycan 4S goes up to 598hp and slashes the 0-100kph dash time to 3.7 seconds while the 884hp Turbo brings that time down to 2.7 seconds. Markets abroad will also get the 952hp Turbo S, and the wild 1100hp Turbo GT (0-100kph in 2.2 seconds)!

2024 Porsche Taycan performance

It’s the 4S that’s my ride for the day. And the very first point of note? Performance. Responses are instant and the build of speed is ferocious. So much so that you’ll rarely get an opportunity to go full throttle. Given the space you can also use the Formula E-derived push to pass function. Pressing a button on the steering mode selector has the motors give their all for 10 seconds at a time. That’s an added 90hp over the standard 500hp and it’s brilliant fun to use. It’s just crazy the insane power electric motors have unlocked. Mind you, this Taycan 4S is second from the bottom in terms of power. Faster Taycans will require you to recalibrate your sense of speed.

2024 Porsche Taycan ride, handling and features

More powerful motors aside, the Taycan also gets a redone suspension. Air suspension is standard and an optional Active Ride function works behind the scenes to keep the ride flat. It’ll even have the car lean into corners like a motorcycle to maximize grip and the suspension trickery works eerily well.

The Taycan corners flat no matter what speed you’re doing and belies its 2.2 tonne mass. It’s crisp at the steering too, and grips the road as if its life depended on it.  In fact, you almost feel like you’re always driving slower than the cornering speeds the Taycan is capable of. It really is the handling that separates the Taycan from other high performance EVs. But, and this is a complaint with all EVs, despite all the power, all the handling prowess and even this artificial noise, the driving experience isn’t as emotive as you’d expect in a Porsche. it feels a bit distant and you don’t want your Porsche to feel that way.

The other cool bit? That Active Ride suspension has an added function of raising the car when the door is unlocked easing the process of getting in and out. Inside, the Taycan looks familiar with its three screen layout but the interface has been upgraded. The optional passenger display (the fourth screen) gets added functions and what’s nice is that a special coating means the contents of this screen aren’t visible to the driver.

The rear seat is comfy with ample room. Just don’t expect to sprawl out here.  As ever, you can also spec your Taycan to your liking for a big price, though.

2024 Porsche Taycan battery and charging

Those buying the Taycan for its virtues as an EV will have much to like. Ride comfort is good, the cabin is quiet and the new range figures should do away with range anxiety. The new battery chemistry has also unlocked a higher charge speed up to 320Kw, and allows the Taycan to charge at a faster rate for a longer period of time too.

Also helping the Taycan go the distance are aero tweaks at the bumpers, though the biggest giveaways to this being the latest version of the electric car are its subtly redone headlights now with standard fit Matrix LED tech. Taycan enthusiasts will notice subtle tweaks to the tail lamp internals while the glowing Porsche lettering is a cool detail.

2024 Porsche Taycan price and verdict

The updated Taycan goes on sale in India shortly and we expect prices to start at Rs 1.6 crore (estimated ex-showroom) with the Turbo S likely around 2.8 crore.   The neck snapping acceleration might not be enough to make converts of ardent petrolheads but for well heeled buyers open to going electric, the Taycan is arguably the most exciting choice around. It’s fast, handles like a Porsche should and even feels India-friendly in its ability to tackle bad roads. The latest iterations’ enhanced range and added performance make the package feel even more complete.

To sum it up then, the Taycan remains electric and electrifying.

Real Driving Emissions (RDE) norms: Everything you want to know about it

Real Driving Emissions (RDE) norms: Everything you want to know about it

  • Real Driving Emissions (RDE) come as a significant technological upgrade in the BS6 emission norms.
Real Driving Emissions (RDE) come as a significant technological upgrade in the BS6 emission norms.

It’s been one year and a day past, the second stage of Bharat Stage Six or BS6 emission norms has been implemented across India. A key element of the BS6 emission regulation is the Real Driving Emission (RDE) norms. In fact, it can be called the driving force behind the second phase of the BS6 emission norms.

While we know that the BS6 emission norm is the latest emission regulation, that the vehicle manufacturers in the country must comply with while developing and making their respective vehicles, the idea of RDE is not clear to many.

Also Read : India might revise upcoming vehicle emission norms? Here’s why

To clear up your confusion, here is a comprehensive fact sheet about the RDE.

What is RDE?

Currently, to comply with the BS6 norms, vehicle emission measurements and tests are largely tested and determined in the laboratory with artificial scenarios that replicate the real world without any external influence. This results in differences between emission data produced during the lab test and in the real world. Here comes the RDE which has been developed as a testing method to measure emissions in actual driving conditions rather than laboratories.

The RDE mandates that vehicle manufacturers equip their vehicles with a Portable Emissions Measurement System (PEMS). Also, the norms mandate that diesel vehicles must come with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems onboard. The SCR uses Diesel Exhaust Fluid (AdBlue), which significantly reduces emissions of compounds such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) by converting pollutants into water, nitrogen and small amounts of carbon dioxide. This eventually reduces the overall tailpipe emission of the vehicle.

During the first phase of BS6 norms, automakers could comply with regulations through the Lean NOx Trap (LNT) system, which allowed sub-2.0-litre diesel engines to achieve lower pollution levels. The bigger diesel motors already upgraded to the SCR system during the initial phase of BS6 emission norms. However, with the second phase of BS6 enforced, the automakers will have to use more sophisticated and expensive SCR systems.

RDE impact on car buyers

While the automakers have been bearing the majority of the impact of RDE implementation, the consumers are facing the impact mainly in the form of price hikes for vehicles. In the last one year, several automakers have increased their passenger vehicles’ pricing significantly irrespective of variants and powertrains. The small cars too have seen a significant price hike overall. These price hikes can be attributed to the overall production cost surge owing to the new norms among others. come

The recalled units of the Toyota Glanza are suspected to have a faulty fuel pump motor, which could lead to engine stalling

Toyota Kirloskar Motor has issued a voluntary recall for 2,305 units of the Glanza hatchback in the country. The affected Toyota Glanza models were manufactured between April 2 and October 6, 2019, and the defect is related to a faulty fuel pump motor. Toyota said that the recall campaign is in continuation to the one conducted on July 31, 2020.

More recently, Maruti Suzuki recalled 16,000 units of the Baleno for the same reason. Both the Glanza and Baleno share the same underpinnings and are essentially badge-engineered cousins. The models are made by Suzuki for either manufacturer. Toyota said that there could be a possible issue with the fuel pump motor in the affected vehicles, which could lead to engine stalling.

Rural demand & SUVs propel India’s record-breaking car sales in FY24

Rural demand & SUVs propel India’s record-breaking car sales in FY24

Rapid surges in SUV sales have propelled the growth in rural market sales for all the carmakers in India, while demand for small cars has slumped sign

Rapid surges in SUV sales have propelled the growth in rural market sales for all the carmakers in India, while demand for small cars has slumped significantly.

Rural India emerged as the driving force behind the record-breaking sales of passenger vehicle sales in FY24. After registering 41.2 lakh passenger vehicles in the CY23, now the Indian auto industry has sold 40 lakh PVs for the first time in a financial year in FY2024, reported Mint. Interestingly, this growth came despite the sliding numbers of hatchbacks, which conventionally remained the driving force behind the Indian passenger vehicle market as well as the rural PV sales.

The report has stated that in FY24, the Indian passenger vehicle market registered a total of 42.3 lakh units and one in every two cars sold in the country were SUVs. The overall passenger vehicle market in the country witnessed an 8.7 per cent year-on-year (YoY) growth over the 38.9 lakh cars sold in the previous financial year, which was another record for the Indian auto industry. Clearly, the sales of the passenger vehicles are on the momentum of creating incremental growth records over the last two financial years.

All OEMs register record rural sales

All the major car manufacturers in India reportedly witnessed all-time-high sales in rural markets in the last financial year. The demand and sales in the rural markets even overtook the urban markets, where the most preferred vehicles are SUVs.

Speaking on the rural demand and sales of Maruti Suzuki, the country’s most-selling passenger vehicle brand, Shashank Srivastava, executive committee member of Maruti Suzuki, said that sales for the OEM in the rural market were 7.87 lakh units, registering an 11 per cent YoY growth. He added that it was much better than the OEM’s urban market growth. “Rural sales of 7.87 lakh units this year, a growth of 11% year-on-year, have been much better than urban growth. Rural growth for the year is about 11% and urban growth is about 7%. And so, this is the highest-ever rural sales that we saw, which also should be a very good signal for the economy,” Srivastava said.

The second bestselling carmaker in India, Hyundai, attributed the rise in rural sales to multiple factors such as infrastructure development, increased access to information, and improved road quality across the country. Tarun Garg, Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai Motor India, said that rural sales for the OEM, for which SUVs account for more than 60 per cent of its total sales, reached a record 19.44 per cent in FY24, up from the previous year’s 18 per cent. This means that nearly one in every five Hyundai cars sold in India in FY24 were sold in rural areas. This signified a burgeoning consumer base beyond urban markets.

For homegrown auto major Tata Motors, rural sales contribute around 40 per cent to the OEM’s total sales. In the past five years, Tata Motors claims to have witnessed a five-times increase in rural market growth. The report quoted a Tata Motors spokesperson revealing that models like Tata Nexon, Punch and Tiago were the company’s highest-selling passenger vehicles in the rural markets in FY24. The OEM also attributed this sales surge to models like Punch CNG and Tiago EV.

What’s driving the surge in rural PV sales

The SUV segment in the Indian passenger vehicle market has been growing at a rapid pace over the last couple of years and it was no different in FY24. In the last fiscal, one in every two passenger vehicles sold in India, were SUVs, becoming the driving factor behind the overall PV sales growth as well as the rural market also. The segment reportedly registered its sharpest growth of 28 per cent in the last fiscal, while sales of hatchbacks or small cars accounted for 28 per cent of the total PV sales volume. The sales of hatchbacks witnessed a 12 per cent slump in the just concluded fiscal, compared to the FY23.

This comes as a major shift in trend. Earlier, the rural markets mostly preferred small cars at the entry level, but over the last couple of years that seems to have changed with aspirations of rural consumers also rising. Speaking on this, Shashank Srivastava said that the percentage sales of smaller cars is still higher in rural areas, but the overall segment construct of the markets is converging. Key factors such as rising rural incomes, higher internet penetration and connectivity are leading this change, Srivastava said. He also said the exponential growth in rural sales isn’t an isolated phenomenon, but a culmination of various factors fostering economic buoyancy in the countryside. “There seems to be a convergence in the segment choices of the rural and the urban consumers with a small lag of time,” the Maruti Suzuki official added.

SUVs and MPVs help Maruti Suzuki clock 15% jump in car sales in March

SUVs and MPVs help Maruti Suzuki clock 15% jump in car sales in March

Models like Fronx, Brezza and Grand Vitara continue to lead Maruti Suzuki’s charge in the SUV segment while Ertiga and XL6 power the carmaker in MPV s

Maruti Suzuki continues to witness increase in sales of its utility vehicles with SUVs like Fronx, Brezza, Grand Vitara and Jimny.

Utility vehicles have proved to be the game-changer for Maruti Suzuki yet again as the carmaker recorded a 15 per cent jump in passenger car sales in March. With the help of SUVs and MPVs like Brezza and Ertiga among others, Maruti clocked more than 1.52 lakh sales last month. While the utility vehicle segment continues to witness rise in sales, the compact cars like Baleno and Swift continues a downslide for the carmaker. Overall, Maruti Suzuki ended the financial year with record sales of more than 21 lakh cars.

Compact cars from Maruti Suzuki continues to be the biggest contributor to its sales despite falling numbers. Maruti sells models like Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift and WagonR in this segment. In March, Maruti clocked 71,832 units in the segment which is lower than 69,844 units it could sell during the same month last year. Maruti is expected to see some upward movement in the segment when it launches the facelift version of the Swift and Dzire sometime later this year.

The biggest gainer among Maruti cars are its SUVs and MPVs. With sales of 58,436 units in March, Maruti saw an impressive 57 per cent increase over 37,054 units sold in March last year. SUVs like Brezza, Fronx and Grand Vitara remain the best-selling models for Maruti in this segment. In the MPV segment, Ertiga and XL6 remain among the top-selling models.

Also Read : EVs and CNG cars power Tata Motors in March with 14% increase in sales.

Small cars like Alto and S-Presso also saw rise in sales in the last month of the fiscal. The two models found 11,829 takers in March, marginally higher than 11,582 unit sales during the same month last year. Ciaz, the only mid-size sedan in Maruti’s lineup, saw only 590 units dispatched last month.

Also Read : Hyundai Creta walks away with another record month, 16,458 units sold in March.

Overall, Maruti sold 21.35 lakh cars in the last 12 months, a record for India’s largest car manufacturer. Out of these, Maruti’s sale in India was nearly 17.60 lakh with almost 10 per cent increase over the last financial year. In FY2023-24, Maruti’s overall exports also hit a record of 2.83 lakh units. In March alone, Maruti exported 25,892 units.

New MotoGP owners, Liberty Media Dorna takeover

New MotoGP owners, Liberty Media Dorna takeover

Dorna to retain management team led by Carmelo Ezpeleta; deal valued at €4.2 billion.

Formula 1 owner Liberty Media has announced an agreement to acquire MotoGP, through a takeover of current rights holder Dorna.

The official announcement confirms that the current Dorna management structure, led by CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta will continue. Liberty Media will acquire 86 percent of Dorna, in a deal with an enterprise value of €4.2 billion (over Rs 37,000 crore) and an equity value of €3.5 billion (over Rs 31,000 crore).

  1. Liberty Media to acquire 86 percent of Dorna
  2. Carmelo Ezpeleta will remain CEO

American mass media company Liberty has owned the rights to Formula 1 since 2016. The championship has since witnessed a spike in popularity, especially in America, partly due to the success of the Drive to Survive Netflix series.

The company is now set to acquire approximately 86 percent of Dorna, which has held the commercial and TV rights to MotoGP since 1992. Dorna also holds exclusive rights to Moto2, Moto3, MotoE, and the Superbike World Championships, among others.  The acquisition is expected to be completed by end-2024 and is subject to clearances and approvals by competition and foreign investment law authorities.

The official announcement stresses that Dorna will “remain an independently run company” and business will remain based in Madrid. Carmelo Ezpeleta will continue in his role as CEO and MotoGP will retain its current management team.

“We are thrilled to expand our portfolio of leading live sports and entertainment assets with the acquisition of MotoGP,” said Greg Maffei, Liberty Media President and CEO.  “MotoGP is a global league with a loyal, enthusiastic fan base, captivating racing and a highly cash flow generative financial profile. Carmelo and his management team have built a great sporting spectacle that we can expand to a wider global audience. The business has significant upside, and we intend to grow the sport for MotoGP fans, teams, commercial partners and our shareholders.”

Before the Liberty takeover, British private investment company Bridgepoint Group owned 39 percent of Dorna, while the Canadian public pension fund CPPIB owned 31 percent. Under the current deal, Dorna management will retain approximately 14 percent of their equity business.

“This is the perfect next step in the evolution of MotoGP, and we are excited for what this milestone brings to Dorna, the MotoGP paddock and racing fans,” said Ezpeleta.

“We are proud of the global sport we’ve grown, and this transaction is a testament to the value of the sport today and its growth potential. Liberty has an incredible track record in developing sports assets and we could not wish for a better partner to expand MotoGP’s fanbase around the world.”
