Tata Motors has launched Sierra EV in the Indian market after a long wait. Available at a starting price of just ₹ 18.79 lakh (ex-showroom), this SUV comes with 63 kWh and 75 kWh battery options. One thing was most discussed at the time of launch – why is the power output of the 75 kWh RWD variant less than the 63 kWh RWD?

The 63 kWh model produces 238 PS (175 kW), while the 75 kWh RWD produces only 209 PS (154 kW). This is a difference of 29 PS (about 12%), while the 75 kWh variant is also costlier and has a longer range. Tata has now given an official statement regarding this.

Why is power reduced in bigger packs?

According to Tata Motors, this is not a mistake but an intentional engineering decision. Both batteries are packed in the same volume. The 75 kWh battery uses high-capacity cells and Cell-to-Pack (C2P) architecture, achieving excellent packaging efficiency of 141 Wh/kg and 8.9 km/kWh energy efficiency.

This brings the ARAI range to 665 km (99 km more than 63 kWh). However, this resulted in a slight reduction in operating voltage, resulting in reduced peak power. The company says that the peak torque of 315 Nm is the same in both the RWD variants, so there will be no significant difference in daily driving and city-highway performance. 75 kWh is range-focused, while 63 kWh is performance-oriented.

Design and interior

Sierra EV comes with an attractive design like the ICE model. Its highlights are closed-off grille, end-to-end LED DRL, LED taillights, flush door handles, 19-inch alloy wheels with aero inserts and a large panoramic sunroof (1525mm x 925mm). The 2730 mm wheelbase and 622 liters of boot space add to the practicality.

The cabin has a triple screen setup (two 12.3-inch + 10.25-inch). Light colours, spacious feel, ventilated and memory seats, extendable under-thigh support, rear blinds and leatherette upholstery provide a premium experience.

Features and safety

12-speaker JBL sound system (Dolby Atmos), wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, EV Route Planner, DrivePay (UPI), AirConsole Gaming, iRA.ev connectivity, 540° camera and gesture-controlled powered tailgate are the big features.

The 63 kWh battery gives 565 km ARAI range, while the 75 kWh will give 665 km range. Both RWD have 315 Nm torque. AWD option is also available in 75 kWh. ARAI certified range of 543 km has been given for its large battery pack. The company says that its nationwide network is already ready for electric vehicles, in which showrooms and service centers have been upgraded and more than 1,50,000 staff have been trained to operate electric vehicles. The e Vitara will be available with battery-as-a-service programs and subscription plans, as well as assured buyback plans.

Export to more than 100 countries
The e Vitara has been introduced as a global electric SUV, which is made in India and is being exported to more than 100 countries. Exports began on September 1 from Pipavav Port in Gujarat, with more than 2,900 units being shipped to 12 major European markets in the month of August itself, including UK, Germany, Norway, France, Denmark, Switzerland, Netherlands, Sweden, Hungary, Iceland, Austria and Belgium.

It is the EV variant of the recently launched Carens Clavis MPV, and its claim is up to 490 km. Although Kia is already selling EV6 and EV9 in India, it is the first Made-in-India Mass-Market EV of the brand.

Long range
From inside, Carens Clavis Ev is very similar to Hyundai Creta Electric. Like its Hyundai Sibling, Kia MPV is available with a battery pack option – 42KWH unit with a claimed range of 404 km and a 51.4kwh unit with a claimed range of 490 km.

100 speed in 8.4 seconds

Carens Clavis EV is powered by 171hp and 255Nm front-axle mounted electric motor. KIA claims that it can achieve the speed of 0-100kph in 8.4 seconds. It also has a 4-level rejector braking and steering column-mounted drive selector.

What does the exterior look like?
In terms of exterior and interior design, there have not been more changes than Ice-Powered Carens Clavis, except some EV-specific updates. It has a slightly changed bumper, in which the charging port is now located on the nose of MPV. There is also a new Ice-cubbed LED fog lamps and a new silver trim on the lower bumper.

Interior

Inside, the dashboard design is also similar to ordinary carens. However, due to this being an EV, the Center Console area is designed with a new floating design, providing additional storage space. KIA has used different colors for upholstery, and it is especially available in 7-seater gauges.

In the case of safety, Carens Clavis EV consists of 6 airbags, ESC, ABS, hill-start assist, TPMS, and all four disc brakes as standard. Level 2 adas and 360-degree cameras are also available on high trims. There is also a virtual engine sound system for pedestrian safety.
