Hyundai has patented the design of a new off-road 4X4 SUV named Boulder in India, which will potentially be launched in the market to compete with off-road SUVs like Mahindra Thar. The Boulder Concept, which was presented globally at the New York International Auto Show in April 2026, caught everyone's attention with its boxy and rugged design. Now with the patent filing in India, the company is preparing this hardcore off-roader for the Indian market.
This SUV will be built on body-on-frame architecture, which will provide better off-road capability than conventional SUVs. According to reports, it may also get the option of Electric Vehicle (EV) powertrain, which will make it a new option for eco-friendly off-roading. Design and Styling
The design of Boulder Concept is very aggressive and adventurous. It has a boxy silhouette, flared wheel arches, rugged skid plates and strong bumpers. The patent document shows some changes to the skid plate housing, bumper and side profile, which will make the production model more practical. This SUV will come with a modern look with futuristic interior.
Powertrain and performance
Official details have not been released yet, but if reports are to be believed, the Boulder could be the company's first body-on-frame SUV. It is likely to come with AWD (All-Wheel Drive) system, differential locking and ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) powertrain as well as EV variants. Position in Indian market
It is clear from the patent filing in India that Hyundai is developing this model for the local market. Compared to Mahindra Thar, Boulder will come with more premium positioning.
