Mahindra Thar

Mahindra Thar is the most popular option. 226 mm ground clearance, 41°+ approach angle, 36° departure angle and good breakover angle make it reliable on hilly roads. Options are available with 2.2L diesel (130 bhp, 300-320 Nm) or 2.0L petrol engine with 4×4, rear diff lock and automatic.

The Thar is comfortable in the city too, with good features and the 5-door Roxx variant is perfect for family use. Balanced ride on tough roads and powerful torque makes climbing easy at low RPM. However, in some cases body roll is felt. Its starting ex-showroom price is Rs 9,99,500.

Maruti Jimny

Maruti Jimny is the compact king. With 210 mm ground clearance, superior articulation (solid axle on both sides), 36° approach and 47-50° departure angles, it is most agile on tight mountain trails and narrow paths. ALLGRIP Pro 4×4 with 1.5L petrol (103 bhp) and low-range system is easy for beginner off-roaders. The light weight and small size (1645 mm wide) makes it fun to ride on winding mountain roads. But due to less power, maintaining momentum on long climbs can be challenging. Its ex-showroom price starts from ₹ 12.32 lakh.

Force Gurkha

Force Gurkha is the most hardcore off-roader. With 233 mm ground clearance, 700 mm water wading, front-rear diff locks and 2.6L diesel engine (138 bhp, 320 Nm), it is made for extreme terrain. Gurkha's gradeability of 35° and robust build is unmatched on dangerous mountain roads, deep rivers and mud. More space is available in 5-door variant. It is best for pure adventure and military-style users, but comfort is less on the road. Its starting ex-showroom price is Rs 16,30,910.

Our advice: If you want balanced performance, comfort and daily use then Mahindra Thar is best. For pure extreme off-roading and reliability, the Force Gurkha is unbeatable. Jimny will be ideal for narrow trails and fun driving. Prices range around Rs 12-18 lakh. Before choosing any of the three, check your budget and take a test drive.

The Thunder Edition comes with several accessories as standard. It gets a front skid plate, side door cladding, door visor, door sill guard, grip cover in rustic tan, floor mat and graphics on the exterior. There is also a garnish on the front bumper, ORVM, side fender and hood.

Maruti Suzuki has not made any other changes to the Jimny. It continues to come with a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, K-series naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 103 bhp of max power at 6,000 rpm and a peak torque output of 134 Nm at 4,000 rpm. It comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The manual gearbox delivers a claimed fuel economy of 16.94 kmpl whereas the automatic transmission delivers 16.39 kmpl. The SUV comes with four-wheel drive as standard and the automatic transmission is available on both variants.

In terms of safety equipment, the Jimny is equipped with 6 airbags, brake limited slip differential, ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Program, Hill Hold Control, Hill Descent Control, Rear View Camera, Brake Assist Function and Engine Immobilizer.

The top-end Alpha variant is equipped with a push start/stop button, cruise control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control and a larger touchscreen infotainment system. Apart from this, it also comes with automatic LED headlamps, headlamp washers, fog lamps, dark green glass window, body-coloured door handles, alloy wheels and electrically foldable ORVMs.

In terms of dimensions, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny measures 3,985 mm in length, is 1,645 mm wide and stands 1,720 mm tall. It has a wheelbase of 2,590 mm. The main highlight of this version of the vehicle is that it offers more cabin space than its three-door twin because of the longer wheelbase.
