MG Motor India is going to introduce a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV next month i.e. on 16 July 2026, which will be based on the Wuling Starlight 560 available in the global market. A patent has been filed by SAIC-GM Wuling in India in March 2026, in which there are hints of MG branding. This launch will mark the company's formal entry into the PHEV segment in India, where options are currently limited.

The name of the model has not been announced yet, but the company's teaser says, 'Internet Inside has changed driving in India. Now the time has come for the next evolution of new energy vehicles. The initial showcase will be on the PHEV version, while the electric variant may also come later. This three-row SUV will target the growing hybrid demand of the Indian market. It has also been spotted during testing on Indian roads, which confirms the local development. Let's take a look at the details from design to powertrain.

Possible design and interior

Like the global model, this SUV will have an upright and bold SUV profile. It will have a tall bonnet, large front grille, squared wheel arches and black cladding on the lower body. LED headlamps and taillamps, roof rails, rear spoiler and 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels can be provided. The rear design will be slightly vertical and MPV-style. Length will be around 4,745 mm and wheelbase will be 2,810 mm. Both five- and seven-seater layouts may be available.

Talking about the interior, its cabin will be minimalist, with less physical switches. There will be a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen and 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster on the dashboard. The global model has features like automatic climate control and six-speaker audio system, which can also be found in India.

Features and safety

The Indian version is expected to have connected technology, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), wireless charging, panoramic sunroof and premium materials. Depending on the global model, it is likely to get multiple airbags, ABS, EBD, ESC, 360-degree camera and structural safety features.

Powertrain and performance

The PHEV version will have a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 20.5 kWh battery pack, which will give a total of 197 bhp power and 230 Nm torque. Electric-only range can go up to 100 KM in CLTC cycle. The electric version can get a range of up to 500 KM with 56.7 kWh battery and 136 bhp motor. It will offer smooth performance, better mileage and lower emissions. In the market, it competes with three-row SUVs like Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari. The estimated price can be kept around ₹ 30-40 lakh.

A testing mule of JSW MG Motor India's new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV has recently been spotted on Indian roads. This model is based on the Wuling Starlight 560 sold in China and is codenamed '520'. This will be MG's first mass-market plug-in hybrid SUV, which will be positioned above the Hector.

The test mule was spotted near the Halol plant near Vadodara, Gujarat, wearing a red temporary number plate (GJ 17). Despite heavy camouflage, many design elements were clearly visible. The company had recently announced at the time of Magister launch that six new cars will be launched in 2026, which also includes this PHEV SUV. There is a strong possibility of launch by October 2026 or December 2026. Let's take a look at the possible details.

The upright and boxy silhouette of the SUV is clearly visible in the spy shots, which will increase road presence. With its length being 4745 mm, width 1850 mm, height 1770 mm and wheelbase 2810 mm, it will prove to be the largest model in the segment. The front features dual-pod projector LED headlights with LED DRL strips at the top and bottom.

The PHEV version has a large functional honeycomb mesh grille, which is essential for engine cooling, while the EV version will have a closed front face. Air dam, front camera module and radar sensor were also seen on the lower bumper. The sides get 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, roof rails and a strong shoulder line. There is a provision of wraparound LED taillights, rear spoiler and wiper in the rear. The overall design is modern, premium and aggressive, which reflects MG's new design philosophy.

The interior will be quite minimalistic and tech-oriented. A 12.8-inch large touchscreen infotainment system, 8.8-inch digital driver display and two-spoke steering wheel will be available in a layout similar to the Chinese Wuling Starlight 560. The AC controls will be integrated on the screen, the center console will be very slim and clean. Automatic climate control and six-speaker audio system will be standard.

The cabin space is very generous. The rear seats can recline up to 125 degrees with 83 percent space utilization. Trunk space can increase up to 1945 litres. It will be available in both 5-seater or 7-seater options, which is ideal for family users. Expect premium features like panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, ambient lighting and wireless charging.

Features and safety

With MG's signature i-Smart connected technology, this car will provide over-the-air updates, remote control and voice commands. It will be provided with level-2 ADAS for safety, 360 degree camera, six airbags, ESP, hill hold, tire pressure monitoring and rear parking sensors with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, digital key, powered tailgate and multiple drive modes. It is expected to get good scores in Global and India NCAP.

Powertrain and fuel efficiency

This PHEV model is the most attractive part. Its 1.5 liter naturally aspirated petrol engine (106 hp, 130 Nm) is paired with an electric motor on the front axle. System output is 197 hp and 230 Nm. The 20.5 kWh LFP battery pack will provide a pure electric range of 100-125 km (CLTC). The total range can go up to 1100 km. Its claimed mileage will be around 25 KMPL. Expected price is Rs 25-35 lakh (ex-showroom).
