There was a time when the real fun of driving a sports car was believed to be in a manual gearbox. But over the last two decades, the speed, convenience and better performance of automatic and dual-clutch transmissions (DCT) have led almost all supercar companies to move away from manual gearboxes. Ferrari was also following the same path and did not launch any new manual car after 2012.

Now the company has surprised everyone by introducing a limited number of Ferrari 12Cilindri Manual. The question is, why did Ferrari revive the manual gearbox when most customers prefer automatic transmissions? The reason for this is not just old memories, but to make the driving experience better than before. Let us know why Ferrari did this?

Direct connection between driver and car

Ferrari says the new 12Cilindri Manuale aims to bring back the physical connection between driver and car that has been lost in modern automatic transmissions. The company has specially prepared it for those customers who want to experience not only fast speed but also the feeling of gear changing.

The new Ferrari does not have a traditional manual gearbox. Instead the company has developed its new Manual By-Wire system. There is a gear lever and clutch paddles, but they operate an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission through an electronic control system. This means that the driver will get the full experience of manual gear changing, while the speed and accuracy of DCT will also remain intact. If needed, it can also be run in automatic mode.

Full feel of the manual

Ferrari has made this system so realistic that if the driver does not maintain proper coordination between the clutch and the accelerator, there will be a jerk in changing gears or the engine may even stall. This means that this is not just a manual for show, but a system demanding real driving skills.

Available to select customers

Ferrari will make only 1,499 units of this car. This number is inspired by the 1,499 cc capacity of the company's first V12 engine (1947). It is primarily designed for Ferrari lovers who want to relive the experience of driving a front-engine V12 Grand Tourer and a classic manual.

No compromise on performance

The new Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale has a 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 engine, which produces 830 hp of power and up to 678 Nm of torque at 9,500 rpm. This supercar accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds and its top speed is more than 340 km/h. That means, despite giving manual experience, its performance is no less than any modern Ferrari.

The chassis tuning has been overseen by ex-Formula 1 engineer Marco Fenello, with Brembo brakes allowing stopping from 100 to 0 km/h in just 33 metres. Safety features include Level 2 ADAS, a driver monitoring system, multiple airbags, electronic stability control and a body structure designed to resist rollovers.
