  • Mahindra Thar is currently available with discounts till 3 Lakhs and short waiting period of up to 3 months.
Mahindra Thar is available with 19 variants in three engine options and three trim levels.

Mahindra Thar has been one of the most popular SUVs in India since its introduction. The three-door lifestyle off-roader received a five-door version in the form of the Mahindra Thar Rocks a few months ago, but that didn't take away from the appeal of the three-door Thar. Since its launch, Thar has been in high demand, with barely any offers or discounts and the longest waiting period in the line-up. But, with the launch of the Thar Rocks, there have been some major changes in the marketing of its three-door sibling, which is actually making the deals better for consumers.

After significantly reducing the waiting period of Mahindra Thar, the domestic auto giant is now offering Discount of Rs 3 lakh on SUV. Interestingly, the amount can be increased further depending on the negotiation skills of the customer. Mahindra Thar Earth Edition, which was introduced as a special edition earlier this year, comes with maximum mileage.

Available in both 4×4 and 4×2 drivetrain layout options, the SUV is priced between 11.35 lakh more Rs 17.60 lakh (ex-showroom), the Mahindra Thar now has a waiting period of up to three months, which is significantly lower than before the launch of the Thar Rocks.

Mahindra Thar: waiting period

There is now a waiting period of up to three months on the 4×4 variants of the Mahindra Thar SUV. Available in both soft-top and hardtop options, the latter has a waiting period of up to three months for the petrol variant, while the diesel model comes with a waiting period of up to two months. The soft-top convertible variant commands a waiting period of up to three months for both petrol and diesel engine variants. There is a waiting period of up to two months for both petrol and diesel engine models of the Mahindra Thar 4×2 variant.

Mahindra Thar: What powers the SUV?

Mahindra Thar 4×4 is available in two engine options. There is also a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel motor. Both these engines are available with transmission options of a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed torque converter automatic unit. The petrol engine produces a maximum power of 150 bhp, while the diesel motor produces a maximum power of 130 bhp.

Mahindra Thar 4×2, on the other hand, is available with a 1.5-litre diesel engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. There is also a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine available, which is shared with the 4×4 variant. The diesel engine generates maximum power of 116 bhp and maximum torque of 300 Nm. This diesel engine gets a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, while the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol motor is only offered with a six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.

Endeavour to Mustang Mach-E: Five Ford cars we would like to see in India

Endeavour to Mustang Mach-E: Five Ford cars we would like to see in India

Endeavour to Mustang Mach-E

  • US–based auto giant Ford Motor is expected to return to India soon with models like new Endeavour SUV and Mustang Mach-E.
Ford Everest, earlier sold as Endeavour SUV, is one of the most awaited cars from the US-based auto giants expected for a comeback in new avatar soon.

Ford Motor could soon to return to India as the US-based carmaker recently filed a few design patents for the domestic market and two of its global models spotted on Indian roads recently. Ford Motor has not officially made any statement on the future of Ford India yet. However, the carmaker is expected to make a comeback after two years after stopping production in 2022. From Figo to Ecosport, Ford has offered several popular models in India before it left the market. While these models may not return to India, here is a look at five global cars which one would like to see on Indian roads when Ford returns.

The Endeavour SUV, rival to Toyota Fortuner, is one of the most awaited models in India. The rival to Toyota Fortuner, Endeavour has been one of the best-selling models in the large SUV space before Ford stopped making cars in India. Recently, Ford Everest was seen on Indian roads, triggering speculation of the SUV’s return. Everest is basically the new generation avatar of the Endeavour SUV sold globally.

The Everest SUV spotted in India comes powered by a 2.0-litre turbo diesel or a 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel engine. The turbo engine can churn out 168 bhp of power while the bi-turbo can generate 208 bhp of power. The torque output peaks at 405 Nm and 500 Nm. The turbo diesel engine uses a 6-speed automatic transmission whereas the Bi-turbo gets a 10-speed automatic transmission. Both gearboxes get SelectShift and Ford offers 4×2 as well as 4×4 drivetrains.

Ford Ranger

The Ranger pickup truck is another model that was spotted on Indian roads along with the Everest SUV. The Ranger, which could rival the likes of Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max sold in India, is one of the smallest pickup trucks Ford offers in global markets.

Ford offers the Ranger pickup globally with three engine options. There is a 2.3-litre EcoBoost, 2.7-litre EcoBoost and a 3.0-litre EcoBoost. The 2.3-litre unit puts out 266 bhp of max power and 420 Nm of peak torque. Then there is the 3.0-litre unit that is rated for 399 bhp and 583 Nm. As of now, the 2.7-litre engine has not gone on sale. Ford says that they are targeting power and torque figures of 310 bhp and 542 Nm.

Ford Bronco

IF Ford was to have an SUV that can rival the likes of Mahindra Thar or Maruti Suzuki Jimny, it would probably be the Bronco. Ford launched the Bronco SUV in 2021 with both two-door and four-door 4X4 versions for the first time. Ford Bronco SUVs are offered in two powertrain options. There is a 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6 petrol engine which can produce 310 horsepower and 542 Nm of torque. It also comes equipped with a 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder engine which can churn out 270 hp of power and peak torque of 420 Nm.

Ford Mustang Mach-E

Ford used to sell the Mustang sports car in India before it wrapped up business three years ago. However, the Mustang can return to India in its new electric avatar when Ford makes a comeback. Ford Mustang Mach-E, which was recently trademarked in India, comes with up to 502 km of driving range. Ford offers the EV equipped with two battery choices – a 72 kWh unit and a 91 kWh unit.

Ford F-150 Lightning

As EV adoption in India grows and customers look forward to newer models, Ford may find an opportunity in the electric pickup segment with the F-150 Lightning. Launched for the first time in 2022, the F-150 Lightning is one of the most popular electric pickup trucks in the US.

The Ford F-150 Lightning pickup truck comes with a range of 482 km on a single charge. Equipped with dual electric motors, one on each axle, the electric pickup can achieve 563 horsepower and a staggering 1,050 Nm of peak torque. F-150 Lightning can go from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in just four seconds. Ford claims that with a super fast DC charger, the F-150 Lightning can replenish around 87 kms of charge in just 10 minutes, charging the battery from 15 to 80% in just 41 minutes. The towing capacity of the F-150 Lightning, an important characteristic in pickup trucks, is 4.53 tonnes.

Mahindra Thar 5-door spied testing with production-ready wheels, launch in 2024

The Mahindra Thar 5-door is one of the most eagerly awaited offerings from the automaker’s stable. The Thar 5-door has been spotted testing on multiple occasions and the latlatest spy shots that emerged online remind you that the model is closer to launch. The latest images show a camouflaged test mule of the lifestyle SUV, albeit wearing production-ready alloy wheels.

The Mahindra Thar 5 door is slated to arrive in 2024 and will be a lifestyle vehicle positioned above the ₹15 lakh mark (Instagram/cars_universe_yt)

The difference in the alloy wheels is notable with Mahindra moving away from the multi-spoke units on the current Thar 3-door to what appears to be a diamond-cut design. The test unit also appears to come with LED headlamps with circular LED DRLs, which further hint at the model being nearly ready for production.

The new Thar 5-door will be a more practical offering over the 3-door model while retaining the off-road capability. Previous spy shots have revealed features like the dashboard and seats, especially with a usable second row. It will also get features like an electric sunroof, a larger infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a centre armrest between the front seats, height adjustable seatbelts and AC vents for the rear passengers. It will also get a much larger boot space, making it far more practical regarding day-to-day driving.

The upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-door will also sport a longer wheelbase to support all the changes. Power is expected to come from the familiar 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo petrol engines, which could be tuned differently. Expect to see both manual and automatic transmission choices at the time of launch, while the model is also expected to arrive with 4×4. Mahindra could bring the Thar 5-door with just rear-wheel drive for a lower starting price. The SUV will take on the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and upcoming Force Gurkha 5-door when it arrives next year.

Tata Sierra EV design patent leaked; to take on Mahindra Thar Electric

Tata Sierra EV design patent leaked; to take on Mahindra Thar Electric

Launched in 1991, the Tata Sierra two-door SUV has reached a cult status in recent times and Tata Motors hinted at resurrecting the nameplate in an all-new electric avatar. The automaker unveiled the Sierra concept at the 2020 Auto Expo as a three-door offering and then as a five-door electric SUV at the 2023 Auto Expo. And now, a design patent related to the Sierra EV has been leaked online, promising the model’s imminent arrival.

By: HT Auto Desk
| Updated on: 10 Dec 2023, 22:07 PM

The Tata Sierra EV is expected to arrive in showrooms in 2025

The design patent gives more details on the Tata Sierra EV and the elements that could likely go into production. The front profile remains largely unchanged with the LED strip running across the width of the SUV, while the headlamps are integrated into the bumper, which now gets vertical slats similar to the ones seen on the new Tata Nexon EV facelift. Other notable elements include the muscular haunches on the bonnet, a skid plate up front and body cladding on the sides. You can also make out the ‘.EV’ badge on the front doors, which will be more common on Tata’s EVs going forward.

Tata Sierra EV Concept
The Tata Sierra EV concept was one of the showstoppers at the 2023 Auto Expo

Tata Motors is known to retain most elements from the concept on the production version and that seems to be likely with the Sierra EV as well. The flush door handles, flashy alloy wheels, and a slight heft on the D-pillar further add to the muscular look. The large windows and massive quarter glass should also bring a more roomy feeling at the back.

Details on the powertrain aren’t available yet but the upcoming Tata Sierra EV is expected to come with two electric motors, one on each axle, which will also bring all-wheel drive to the SUV. The interior is expected to be a big step up from Tata’s existing offerings and is likely to carry several elements from the concept version. Also, expect to see an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) among other advanced tech.

The Tata Sierra EV is expected to be pitched as a lifestyle offering and is expected to enter production in 2025. It’ll be interesting if Tata also brings an internal combustion engine version with petrol and diesel powertrain options. The Sierra EV will take on the Mahindra Thar Electric that’s also expected to arrive in the latter half of the decade as a five-door offering. Meanwhile, Tata is gearing up to introduce the Curvv electric compact SUV in 2024, which will be followed up with the Curvv ICE a year later. The Tata Harrier EV is also slated to arrive next year.

Electric versions of Mahindra Thar, XUV, Scorpio, Bolero being planned

Electric versions of Mahindra Thar, XUV, Scorpio, Bolero being planned

Mahindra & Mahindra on Tuesday confirmed that all its existing models with internal combustion engines will eventually also come with an electric twin. While no timeline was assigned, the company confirmed that this plan includes Bolero, Thar and Scorpio.

Mahindra and Mahindra has announced that it will step up its EV game in India by launching electric versions of all its flagship models, including the Scorpio, Bolero and XUV models, in near future.

Mahindra currently offers XUV400 in the Indian market and will have models under its BE range soon as well. But the core ICE or internal combustion engine models too will come with electric powertrain ‘in the times to come’. the ICE and EV options of each model will be sold side by side but under different portfolio. The EVs will be under Born Electric Vehicle classification.

The electric versions of the Bolero. Thar, Scorpio and XUV are branded as Bolero.e, Thar.e, Scorpio.e and XUV.e, respectively. These models would eventually cater to the lifestyle buyer who is also environmentally concerned, says the company. Mahindra has also revealed that Oscar-winning music director AR Rahman will ‘design and build’ sounds that will go into upcoming all-electric models from the carmaker.

In August 2022, Mahindra & Mahindra had offered a glimpse at its upcoming electric vehicles during an event beld in United Kingdom. The carmaker had also showcased the new EV platforms which will underpin the upcoming Thar, XUV, Bolero and Scorpio-based electric SUVs.

Mahindra will showcase the concept version of the upcoming Thar.e, the electric version of its flagship off-road SUV Thar, in Cape Town later today. The carmaker had teased the Thar.e electric SUV ahead of the global debut. The teaser shows a glimpse of the rear tail lamp design which is in line with the current Thar. Considering this, it can be expected that the current design language of the Thar will mostly stay intact but will get a few changes to give some EV signature to the Thar.e.

It is expected that Mahindra will either re-purpose the existing platform of the Thar so that it can be used to fit batteries and electric motors or they will base the Thar.e on an all-new dedicated electric skateboard platform.

Mahindra Thar EV Concept to debut on 15th August

Mahindra and Mahindra have teased an electric version of the Thar. A screenshot from the teaser that Mahindra shared.

Not much is known about the Thar.e as of now. However, it can be expected that Mahindra will either re-purpose the existing platform of the Thar so that it can be used to fit batteries and electric motors or they will base the Thar.e on an all-new dedicated electric skateboard platform. Mahindra already has an electric platform called INGLO on which its upcoming electric SUVs will be based on.

Considering that Thar is an off-roader and comes with four-wheel drive, it makes sense for Mahindra to equip its electric version with a dual-motor setup where one motor sits on the front axle and another one sits on the rear axle. Having said that, what would be the icing on the cake would be a proper quad-motor setup. This means that each wheel will have its own electric motor to modulate the torque and traction individually while off-roading.

The teaser also shows us a glimpse of the rear tail lamp whose design is in line with the current Thar. So, it is a square unit with a smaller square inside. Considering this, it can be expected that the current design language of the Thar will mostly stay intact but will get a few changes here and there so that it can be recognized as the Thar.e and not the ICE version of the Thar.

Apart from this, it is important to note that Mahindra is only showing the concept version of the Thar.e so the production-spec version is still a few years away. Speaking of concepts, Mahindra will also showcase a pick-up truck concept which is expected to be based on the platform that Scorpio N and the upcoming Thar 5-door will use. Again, we do not know when the production-spec version of the pick-up truck will launch.
