As soon as you reach the petrol pump, first look at the display meter carefully. Make sure the meter is set to zero and no previous amount is visible. The pump should have a valid seal of the Petroleum Explosives Safety Organization (PESO). If the seal seems broken or fake then move to another pump. At many pumps the meter is manipulated through software, so always keep an eye on it.

Check quantity before and after inserting nozzle

Note the tank volume before inserting the nozzle into the tank and immediately after filling. If your tank was half full and the pump guy quoted fuel worth Rs 500, then there should be an increase of about 5 liters. If it increases less then complain immediately. Some pumps deliver less fuel by installing special devices in the nozzle.

Be careful with payment

When paying in cash, give the correct note and count the change. While making card or UPI payment, do not hand over the phone or card to the pump operator. Keep an eye on the swipe machine to ensure that the correct amount is being entered. Use digital payment apps where transactions are visible immediately.

Pay attention to pump cleanliness and staff behavior

Avoid dirty, dark or poorly lit pumps. Be alert if the staff is working in a hurry or trying to protect your eyesight. A good pump always has a clean board, working pressure gauges and a supervisor.

Take receipt and verify later

Be sure to take a digital or printed receipt every time. The name of the pump, date, quantity, rate and total amount should be clearly written in it. After reaching home, check the receipt and the condition of the tank again. If in doubt, lodge a complaint in the helpline of the concerned oil company or in the consumer court.
