New Delhi. Mahindra's flagship SUV Scorpio has achieved a significant milestone in sales. Recently, Mahindra has completed the production of 9 lakh units of its popular SUV from Chakan plant in Pune. The 9 lakhth car to roll out of Mahindra's plant was the Scorpio-N model, which is a new avatar of Scorpio and was launched in June 2022.

The Scorpio made its debut in India in 2002 and has received several facelifts and updates since then. Currently, Mahindra is selling both the Scorpio-N and Scorpio Classic variants in India.

How much is Scorpio selling for?
The Mahindra Scorpio is currently the company's best-selling model. The new generation Scorpio-N and the old Scorpio Classic have made it more popular than Mahindra's other SUV, the Bolero. In May, Mahindra sold 9,318 units of both the SUVs. Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO, Mahindra & Mahindra, announced this historic achievement on social media. He wrote, “Today was a very special day. We were at the Chakan plant to celebrate it with the team. It was an emotional moment to send the Scorpio N off the line.”

The Mahindra Scorpio-N SUV is larger than the Scorpio Classic. This SUV is 206 mm longer, 97 mm wider and has a 70 mm longer wheelbase than the previous generation model. It has 18-inch and 17-inch diamond cut alloy wheels. The SUV includes features like signature double barrel LED projector headlamps, long stacked LED tail lamps, shark-fin antenna and electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs. On the other hand, the Scorpio Classic retains the design language of the old Scorpio with some updates.

The engine of Scorpio N is also powerful
The Scorpio Classic SUV comes only with a diesel engine. It has a 2.2-litre engine that generates 130 bhp of power and 300 Nm of peak torque with a 6-speed gearbox.

The Scorpio-N gets a 2.2-litre diesel engine that can generate 172 bhp and 370 Nm of torque. The torque output increases to 400 Nm in the six-speed torque converter automatic transmission variants. The lower variants produce 130 bhp and 300 Nm. Apart from this, the Scorpio-N is also available with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which produces 200 bhp and 370 Nm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter gearbox.

What is the price?
The Scorpio Classic is priced at ₹ 12.64 lakh (S variant), while the S11 trim is priced at ₹ 16.14 lakh. The Scorpio-N starts at ₹ 13.05 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes up to ₹ 24.51 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top-spec Z8 L AT AWD variant.

Sri Lanka has announced to allow the import of vehicles in a phased manner from October 1. The decision has been taken after four years and is part of the island nation's efforts to restore its economy in line with IMF conditions.

An official statement issued by the Presidential Media Division (PMD) on Friday said the ban on public transport vehicles, commercial vehicles and private motor cars will be lifted in three phases as part of a comprehensive economic reform strategy linked to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Extended Fund Facility (EFF) programme.

The PMD statement said the Cabinet's approval to allow motor vehicle imports comes after four years of “stringent import restrictions” that were imposed to preserve the island nation's foreign exchange reserves during an acute economic crisis.

With the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, Sri Lanka imposed import restrictions to preserve foreign exchange reserves, as there was then a need to use the dwindling resource for essential imports such as medicine, fuel and food.

The depletion of foreign exchange reserves in April 2022 has led to an unprecedented economic crisis in Sri Lanka, forcing the island nation to declare a sovereign debt default, its first since gaining independence from Britain in 1948.

Sri Lanka is currently in talks with the IMF, which has made external debt restructuring a condition of a US$2.9 billion bailout package to be released in tranches.

“With the significant improvement in foreign exchange reserves and strengthening of the rupee, the Council of Ministers has decided to lift all vehicle import bans/restrictions until February 2025. This decision is part of our ongoing efforts to restore normality in the economy and meet the needs of our people,” Foreign Minister Ali Sabri said in a post on X.

The PMD statement said that under the first phase, the import of public transport vehicles will be allowed from October 1; under the second phase, the import of commercial vehicles will be allowed from December 1, and under the third phase, motor cars for personal use will be allowed from February 1, 2025.

It added that imports of new vehicles “are expected to boost economic activity due to increased government revenues, particularly from vehicle imports, which have historically been an important revenue source for the country.”

It said that since resumption of imports would put pressure on foreign exchange reserves, additional customs duty would be imposed to mitigate the impact.

According to the data, the average discount on vehicles right now is Rs 38,816, which was Rs 34,630 in 2023.

After the meeting, Chief Minister Stalin shared the information on social media platform 'X' (formerly Twitter) and wrote, “Very interesting discussion with the Ford Motors team! Explored possibilities of renewing Ford's three-decade-old partnership with Tamil Nadu to restart manufacturing in Tamil Nadu.” He also shared some pictures with this post, in which he was meeting Ford officials.

Ford's statement
Ford said in a statement that the company wants to use this plant again to produce vehicles for global markets. However, the company has not yet given official information about the vehicles to be manufactured in this plant or other details. Earlier Ford used to produce cars and engines in this plant, but after closing business in India, this plant became inactive.

Will Ford launch cars in India?
After the talks between the Tamil Nadu government and Ford, discussions about Ford's possible return to India have intensified. However, Stalin's statement makes it clear that Ford will mainly produce vehicles for export. It is not yet clear whether Ford will launch any new vehicle in India or not.

New Delhi. MG Motor India has finally launched its third full electric car, the Windsor EV, in India. The introductory price of this car has been fixed at Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom). However, there is a big twist in this. This price is only for the car, while the company will rent the battery as a “service”, which will be charged Rs 3.5 per kilometer.

Bookings for the MG Windsor EV will begin from October 3, and test drives will be available from October 13. So far, the company has not revealed the full price and delivery dates of this compact utility vehicle (CUV). The Windsor EV will be available in three variants including Excite, Exclusive, and Essence.

MG Windsor EV: Exterior
As mentioned earlier, the MG Windsor EV is a rebadged version of the Wuling Cloud EV sold in China. Inspired by the design of the Cloud EV, the Windsor EV features a sleek split headlight setup and connected LED DRLs. Its side profile looks quite simple and attractive, with flush door handles and 18-inch alloy wheels giving it a clean and modern look.

MG Windsor EV: Features are great
Inside the car, there is a massive 15.6-inch infotainment system, which is the largest in its segment and offers seamless connectivity with integrated apps like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and JioSaavn. The 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster further enhances the driving experience. The rear seat reclines up to 135 degrees, while the front electrically adjustable seats and rear AC vents add extra comfort.

One special thing is that the MG Windsor EV is the first mass-market EV to feature a stunning glass roof. Apart from this, it has premium features like 6-way electrically adjustable driver seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and 256 multi-color ambient lights. Other features include wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 9-speaker Infinity sound system, wireless phone charging, and powered tailgate.

MG Windsor EV: Battery and Range
The MG Windsor EV is powered by a 38kWh LFP battery that uses prismatic cells. The battery sends power to an electric motor that is mounted on the front axle. The motor produces 134 bhp of power and 200 Nm of torque. According to ARAI, it has an estimated range of 331 km on a single full charge. It has four drive modes: Eco, Eco+, Normal, and Sport.

MG Motor is also offering multiple charging options with the Windsor EV. This includes a 3.3 kW CCS2 connection, which takes 13.8 hours to charge the battery. Apart from this, 7.4 kW and 50 kW charging options are also available, which can charge the battery in 6.5 hours and 55 minutes respectively. The battery can also be charged with a 45 kW DC fast charger. Along with this, MG is renting out the battery as a service at a rate of Rs 3.5 per km.

MG Windsor EV: How much will it cost to run?
Suppose you travel 50,000 kms in a year with this electric car, then the battery rent will cost you less than Rs 2 lakh. That means after buying MG Windsor EV, you will pay Rs 3.5 lakh as battery subscription cost.

The five-door Mahindra Thar Rocks is arriving at dealerships across India and test drives are set to begin from September 14. Prospective buyers can reserve it from October 3 by visiting Mahindra's official website, while select dealerships have already started taking unofficial bookings for the new off-roader. The Mahindra Thar Rocks is offered with two engine options: a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel. The petrol engine is only available with rear-wheel drive and produces 160 bhp and 330 Nm of torque with a manual gearbox or 174 bhp and 380 Nm of torque with a torque converter. The diesel engine offers rear-wheel drive and 4×4 configurations, producing 150 bhp and 330 Nm of torque with a manual or 171 bhp and 370 Nm of torque with the same TCA gearbox.

The five-door Thar gets a host of safety technologies, including a Level-2 ADAS with 10 features. It gets stability control, cruise control and traction control as well as hill hold and descent. Mahindra has also fitted a 360-degree surround view camera with blind spot monitoring and EPB with auto-hold functionality.

Along with the TCA gearbox, the Mahindra Thar Rocks gets two new off-roading features over the older three-door Thar, and these are called CrawlSmart and Intelliturn. CrawlSmart allows the driver to maintain low speeds between 2.5 kmph to 30 kmph without any input, and it can automatically adjust the throttle to overcome obstacles in the car's path. Intelliturn also assists in steering in difficult terrains by locking one of the rear wheels using the electronic locking differential.

New Delhi. To promote the sale of electric vehicles, the central government has announced a new subsidy scheme PM E-Drive. This scheme has been implemented after the FAME II subsidy scheme ended in March this year. However, only electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers and electric buses are included in this subsidy scheme, while electric and hybrid cars are out of this scheme. This scheme will remain in force till March 2025.

Under PM E-Drive, a total amount of Rs 10,900 crore has been set aside for 24,80,000 electric two-wheelers, 3,16,000 three-wheelers and 14,028 electric buses. This will be implemented as the third phase of the FAME scheme. Let us tell you that under the FAME-2 scheme, more than 16 lakh electric vehicles have been provided the benefit of subsidy.

Availability of charging stations will increase
Additionally, Rs 500 crore each has been set aside for electric trucks and hybrid ambulances, aimed at promoting EV adoption in critical service sectors and the commercial vehicle segment for the first time. The scheme for trucks will provide incentives only to those who have a scrapping certificate obtained from vehicle scrapping centres approved by the Road Ministry.

The e-drive scheme will also aim to develop a comprehensive charging infrastructure. Charging infrastructure development is also being promoted, with Rs 2,000 crore being provided for installing 22,100 fast chargers for electric four-wheelers, 1800 fast chargers for e-buses and 48,400 fast chargers for e-two-wheelers and three-wheelers.

Apart from the subsidy, the government also announced a Payment Security Mechanism Fund (PSMF) of Rs 3,435 crore for 38,000 electric buses, which will reduce financial risks for bus operators and promote electrification of the public transport network.

Those who buy electric cars will not get subsidy
Those buying private electric cars under the PM E-Drive scheme have been excluded from the subsidy. This is a big blow to India's largest electric car company Tata Motors and other electric passenger car manufacturers.

Union Heavy Industries Minister H D Kumaraswamy said the aim is to achieve 10% EV penetration in the two-wheeler sector and 15% EV penetration in the three-wheeler sector by March 2026 and accelerate the adoption of EVs and set up the necessary charging infrastructure to promote clean transportation. Responding to a question about the reason for excluding electric cars from the scheme, he said GST for private electric cars is at the lower slab of 5%.
