Maruti Suzuki to hike prices of its cars from January

Maruti Suzuki to hike prices of its cars from January

If you are planning to buy a Maruti Suzuki car soon, you have just one month to drive home one before it gets costlier. Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, has announced today (November 27) that it will increase the price of its models from New Year. The new prices will be applicable from January 1 next year. However, Maruti Suzuki has not specified if the fresh price hike will be applicable across all models and also the rate of price increase. The latest hike in Maruti Suzuki car prices will be implemented due to rising production costs.

On Monday, a regulatory filing from Maruti Suzuki said that the hike has become necessary due to ‘increased cost pressure driven by overall inflation and increased commodity prices.’ However, the carmaker assured that it is taking steps to minimise its effect on buyers. It said, “While the company makes maximum efforts to reduce cost and offset the increase, it may have to pass on some increase to the market. This price increase shall vary across models.”

Maruti Suzuki has not specified the quantum of the proposed price hike. The carmaker currently sells small to mid-size cars with few in the compact or large segment. Alto, its entry-level model as well as the smallest car in its lineup, comes at a starting price of 3.54 lakh (ex-showroom). The Invicto MPV, based on Toyota Innova HyCross, is the largest car Maruti sells. The price of Invicto starts from 24.80 lakh (ex-showroom).

Models like Baleno, Swift and WagonR are the three top-selling cars from the Maruti stable. These three cars generally are the highest selling vehicles in India on a monthly basis. Of late, Maruti Suzuki has also stepped up its SUV game, and has become the largest SUV manufacturer with models like Brezza, Fronx, Grand Vitara and Jimny as offerings. Maruti Suzuki has grabbed 22% of the SUV market share, so far in FY24, which is quite close to its target of 25% for the financial year. The Grand Vitara compact SUV, rival to the likes of Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, recently became the fastest model in its category to clock one lakh sales since its launch last year.

The video of the Mahindra five-door Thar test unit shared on social media shows the SUV with projector LED headlights placed on either side of a redesigned grille. The fog lights, placed on the bumper, are halogen units. At the rear, the five-door Thar is likely to get the square-shaped LED taillight units and a slightly tweaked bumper. The test mule seen in the video is a hard-top unit which will also offer an electric sunroof, a first in the segment if it makes it to the production version of the SUV. Earlier spy shots have revealed that the sunroof will be a single-pane unit.

The interior of the five-door Thar SUV will come with several changes as well, including updated features. The new Thar is expected to be offered with the same 8-inch digital touchscreen infotainment system that Mahindra offers in the Scorpio-N SUV. The bigger Thar is also likely to get new features like wireless phone charging and dual-zone climate control among others. Regular features like digital driver display, roof-mounted speakers, steering-mounted controls, wireless connectivity and more. Safety features coul include six airbags, parking sensors, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), electronic stability control (ESC) among others.

Under the hood, Mahindra is likely to use the same 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines for the five-door Thar SUV. The 2.2-litre mHawk 130 CRDe diesel can generate kicks out 130 bhp of power and 300 Nm torque. The 2.0-litre mStallion 150 TGDi petrol is capable of churning out 150 bhp of peak power and 320 Nm torque. However, the power output could be slightly different for five–door Thar. Both engines are likely to come mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox. Mahindra is expected to offer the five–door Thar with both 4WD system as well as rear-wheel drive technology.

Toyota Fortuner price, Hilux Champ, IMV0 SUV, India details

Toyota Fortuner price, Hilux Champ, IMV0 SUV, India details

Toyota has taken the wraps off the all-new Hilux Champ pickup, its first model based on the recently unveiled IMV 0 platform. Earlier this month, we had reported to you that this new Toyota pickup will be christened Hilux Champ upon debut.

The Hilux Champ has been unveiled in Thailand, which is where it will first go on sale; in the future, it will be launched in more markets like Indonesia, Africa and South America.

  1. Toyota Hilux Champ gets two wheelbase options
  2. Three engines, two gearbox options on offer
  3. IMV 0 platform to spawn a future affordable off-roader

Toyota Hilux Champ: what exactly is it?

The Hilux Champ is the second product for Toyota’s Hilux brand. It has been introduced as a customisable vehicle with as many as 10 configurations, depending on the market. This means, apart from the platform, mechanicals and some body panels, the Hilux Champ can be customised as per a buyer’s needs by third-party car body-builders.

This pickup is primarily aimed at customers who are looking for an affordable alternative to the Hilux, which has now grown much larger in size and also in price from the original. Toyota previewed the Hilux Champ as the IMV 0 concept at the Japan Mobility Show, and as the Toyota Rangga concept in Indonesia a few months ago. The model was also shown in the Philippines where there is a huge demand for customisable vehicles.

In production form, the Hilux Champ gets three powertrain choices. First is the 2.4-litre diesel good for 150hp and mated to either a 5-speed manual (350Nm torque) or a 6-speed automatic (400Nm torque). It also gets two naturally aspirated 4-cylinder petrol engine options – a 2.0-litre unit good for 130hp and 183Nm, and a 2.7-litre unit that delivers 166hp and 245Nm of torque. Both these engines also get a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox as options. Additionally, there are talks of a strong hybrid petrol option also making its way in some markets.

As far as wheelbase options are concerned, the Hilux Champ SWB is 4.9 metres long, 1.8 metres wide and 1.8 metres tall. It has a 2,750mm wheelbase, which is identical to the Toyota Innova Crysta. Meanwhile, the Hilux Champ LWB is 5.3 metres long, has a 3,085mm wheelbase, and is identical in width and height to the SWB version. Both versions get a 180mm ground clearance.

Toyota Hilux Champ could spawn an affordable Fortuner

While there is no official word on whether the Toyota Hilux Champ will make it to India, the IMV 0 platform, which is a ladder-frame unit, is meant for developing markets, and is likely to spawn an affordable version of the Fortuner. However, sources tell us the Hilux Champ is likely to make its way to India in the future, and the SUV derivative is expected to go on sale around a year after the pickup’s India launch.

Triumph Thruxton 400 in the works? New spy shots reveal upcoming 400 cc cafe racer

Triumph Thruxton 400 in the works? New spy shots reveal upcoming 400 cc cafe racer

Bajaj Auto and Triumph Motorcycles launched the maiden motorcycles from the partnership with the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X off to a good start. The bikes are made in India and will be sold globally as the most affordable Triumph bikes. It now seems the British bike maker is working on a third motorcycle as per the latest spy shots that surfaced on the internet. The new spy images reveal a cafe racer based on the Triumph Speed 400 in the works, which could be the new Triumph Thruxton 400.

By: HT Auto Desk
| Updated on: 27 Nov 2023, 00:08 AM

The Triumph Thruxton 400 could arrive next year sharing underpinnings with the Speed 400

The latest images reveal the motorcycle to be identical to the Triumph Speed 400, while the biggest addition is the bubble-type fairing on the motorcycle. The old-school fairing appears similar to the one on the Triumph Speed Triple RR, which could also serve as an inspiration for the entry-level cafe racer.

The test mule also reveals clip-on handlebars in place of a flat handlebar, while the rest of the bodywork including the fuel tank, side panels and tail section have been carried over. The riding posture also appears more dedicated thanks to the clip-ons, while the foot pegs remain slightly rear-set, like the Speed 400.

Triumph Motorcycles is all set to end the production of the Thruxton 1200 at the end of 2024 and it will be really interesting to see if the name could be revived for a brand new cafe racer based on the 400 platform. The bike is expected to continue using the 399 cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled motor that belts out 39.5 bhp at 8,000 rpm and 37.5 Nm of peak torque at 6,500 rpm on the Speed and Scrambler 400. The engine is paired with a 6-speed gearbox.

Triumph could continue the Thruxton name on the new 400 cc cafe racer, despite the Thruxton 1200 going out of production at the end of 2024

The Triumph Thruxton 400 will not only bring a more retro flair but also bring more visual volume to the motorcycle, which is otherwise missing on the tightly packaged Speed 400. Official details are yet to be confirmed but we expect Triumph to announce the motorcycle sometime next year. The company is currently working on commencing exports for the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X to Europe, while the Thruxton 400 could arrive globally by mid-2024 or in the second half of the year.

Toyota hopes SUVs will dominate Indian passenger vehicle market in 2024

Toyota hopes SUVs will dominate Indian passenger vehicle market in 2024

Toyota hopes the Indian passenger vehicle market will continue its growth momentum of 2023 into next year. The Japanese car manufacturer also believes that SUVs will continue to propel the growth momentum of the country’s PV market in 2024, just like in 2023. Speaking to PTI, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Executive Vice President and Country Head Vikram Gulati said that the Indian passenger vehicle market would carry forward the momentum of 2023 to the next purely driven by economic fundamentals, having already moved beyond pent-up demand-induced growth.

By: HT Auto Desk
| Updated on: 26 Nov 2023, 12:13 PM

Toyota hopes SUVs will push the Indian passenger vehicle market’s growth momentum in 2024.

In 2023, the Indian market witnessed the rapid growth of SUVs, which even outpaced the demand for hatchbacks and small cars that have been conventionally the bestselling segment in the country for decades. Gulati believes that SUVs are expected to witness fast growth in general in 2024, while the mid to higher end of the segment will see faster acceleration. He also said that the small cars category will remain a concern for the automakers.

The growth in the Indian passenger vehicle market will be very healthy in 2024, believes Gulati. “I think the market is growing. It will continue to grow in a very healthy way. We are well beyond the part when people were saying this is pent-up demand. We have built much beyond that, and the festive season has seen very good pickup,” he said talking about the outlook for 2024. He also stated that spending is going to be good in terms of people wanting personal mobility.

In 2023, the total sales of passenger vehicles in India are expected to cross the 40 lakh unit mark. In 2022, PV sales were at 37.93 lakh units, against 30.82 lakh in 2021. Clearly, the sales of passenger vehicles in India are moving upward at a fast pace, leaving behind the pandemic shock. SUVs are playing a major role in this growth momentum.

Watch: Toyota Innova HyCross: First Drive Impressions

The Toyota official believes that the current shift towards SUVs will continue in 2024 with more consumers willing to pay an additional amount for better features and safety. “In terms of performance and convenience, I think there is a very clear sign that customers will not compromise on that. What that basically means is going forward, we’ll see much of the current trend magnifying itself. Even within the SUVs, we see the mid to higher and SUVs growing,” he said.

While the SUVs are witnessing an ever-increasing demand and sales, small cars witnessing a significant slump in retail numbers. This remains a concern for the automakers and propelling the OEMs to shift towards utility vehicles. Speaking about this, Gulati said, “The challenge as we see today is more towards the smaller car segment. That will be interesting to see how that plays out.”

Toyota Kirloskar Motor is set for a record year in terms of sales in 2023. It has already clocked 1.92 lakh units in the January-October period of 2023, beating the previous highest yearly sales of 1.72 lakh units sold in 2012.

2024 Porsche Panamera unveiled globally with major upgrades

2024 Porsche Panamera unveiled globally with major upgrades

Porsche has unveiled the third generation of the Panamera in the global market. It is important to know that the 2024 Panamera is not an all-new car but Porsche has made enough changes that they are calling it a new generation. There are changes to the chassis, features, design, suspension and the engine too.

By: Paarth Khatri
| Updated on: 25 Nov 2023, 10:05 AM

The 2024 Porsche Panamera gets an all-new design while retaining its silhouette

The 2024 Panamera measures 5,052 mm in length, 1,937 mm in width and 1,423 mm in height. For the Executive versions, these figures will be bumped up to 5,202 mm, 1,937 mm and 1,428 mm. Up front, an additional air intake has been added above the number plate to help the engine breathe better and the window lines have been revised as well. Apart from this, there is a new set of headlamps and tail lamps as well. Overall, the 2025 Panamera looks sleeker and meaner.

The Panamera will now feature Matrix LED headlamps as standard. There is a new optional passenger display that measures 10.9 inches in size. The gear lever is mounted right next to the steering wheel and there are three driving modes – Normal, Sport and Sport Plus.

Powering the 2024 Panamera are four E-hybrid engines. The 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 has been revised and it produces 670 bhp of max power in conjunction with a new electric motor which itself produces 187 bhp. The total torque output is rated at 930 Nm and the engine comes mated to a redesigned eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission.

The Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid sprints to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and boasts a top speed of 315 km/h. Its battery capacity is now 25.9 kWh. This enables an equivalent electric range of up to 91 kilometres in the combined WLTP cycle. A new 11 kW on-board AC charger shortens the charging time at suitable charging points to 2 hours and 39 minutes.

The Panamera and Panamera 4 variants will also be available at the time of the launch. They use a 2.9-litre turbo V6 engine that produces 348 bhp and 500 Nm of peak torque. This is an increase of 22 bhp and 50 Nm when compared to the previous generation. It now takes 5.2 seconds to reach 100 kmph and has a top speed of 272 kmph. The all-wheel drive variants have a top speed of 270 kmph but they take 4.8 seconds to reach 100 kmph.

Porsche panamera price, colours, features, engine, performance, design and interior

Only standard V6 launched for now; no hybrids for India.

Following the global unveiling of the new third-gen PanameraPorsche has already launched its sports sedan in India, and the company says it will start official bookings by next week.

Porsche has only released the price for the regular rear-wheel drive V6 Panamera, which comes in at Rs 1.68 crore (ex showroom, India). The outgoing V6 Panamera was priced at Rs 1.57 crore.

The Rs 1.68 crore price tag, however, is before options, and standard equipment includes 8-way adjustable electric seats, matrix LED headlights, 6 airbags, a full-HD 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment and Porsche Communication Management (PCM) with Navigation, Mobile Phone Preparation, Audio Interface and Voice Control.

Technical specs include the 2.9 litre twin-turbo V6 engine coupled with an 8-speed PDK auto, rear-wheel drive and a two-way adaptive rear spoiler. Further technical details, including the exact power figures, are yet to be revealed.

The Porsche Panamera rivals the Mercedes-AMG GT63 S e-Performance 4-door Coupe (Rs 3.3 crore, ex-showroom).

New Porsche Panamera: no hybrid for India

The V8-powered models of the Panamera will be launched in India at a later date, however, Porsche says that India will not get both V6 and V8 hybrids as it found extremely few takers in the past. However, the GTS version – which will be revealed next year – will launch in India, making it the most powerful Panamera available; the Turbo models won’t make it here as they’re all hybrids.

This also means that the new, fully active suspension system will also not be available here as it needs the hybrid’s high voltage electrical system to operate. Thus, the Indian models will only come with the semi-active air spring setup.

Porsche Panamera long wheelbase to come later

In addition to the regular wheelbase, the Panamera will also have an executive long wheelbase model, given the high demand the previous version saw in China. The new long wheelbase model has been extended by 150mm, with the overall length stretching to 5.2 metres. Given that the previous long wheelbase Panamera was on sale in India, we expect the new model to also make its way here.

Those looking for the Sport Turismo estate version will be disappointed though, as globally, this body style will no longer be available on the Panamera. Porsche says it saw very few takers globally, and that it is limiting this estate body style to the Taycan.

Royal Enfield Shotgun 650 Motoverse Edition makes global debut

Royal Enfield Shotgun 650 Motoverse Edition makes global debut

Back in May 2023, we reported that Royal Enfield will be bringing the Shotgun 650 to the Indian market soon. Well, the manufacturer has finally taken the wraps off the motorcycle at Motoverse 2023. The Shotgun 650 is the fourth 650 cc motorcycle in Royal Enfield’s lineup after Interceptor, Continental GT and Super Meteor. We got a glimpse of the Shotgun 650 first at EICMA 2021 where it was showcased as SG 650 Concept and was a bobber. The continuous production model will be launched early next year.

By: Paarth Khatri
| Updated on: 24 Nov 2023, 21:57 PM

The Shotgun 650 is based on the same platform as the Super Meteor 650.

The Shotgun 650 gets a customised paint scheme in a blue shade with hand-painted graphics in neon yellow. The colour scheme adds a personalised touch to the motorcycle, just like the pinstripes on the Bullet 350. The Royal Enfield Shotgun 650 will be restricted to only 25 units in this blue shade and buyers will be selected based on a lucky draw conducted at RE Motoverse 2023. The company could introduce a new colour in limited numbers at a later date. The motorcycle will sell for 4.25 lakh ex-showroom and delivery of these 25 units will happen in January 2024. In addition to this, the limited edition motorcycle will be offered with an extended warranty and RSA service.

The Shotgun 650 shares its underpinnings with the Super Meteor 650. However, where the Super Meteor is a cruiser and comes with forward-set ergonomics, the Shotgun 650 will have a more neutral riding posture and is a bobber. There will also be a pillion seat on offer which will be removable. The handlebar is different than the Super Meteor 650 and it sits lower. The footpeg positioning is also different as they are centre set instead of forward set.

Royal Enfield Shotgun 650
A look at the rear of the Shotgun 650

Apart from the riding triangle, there are other subtle differences as well. The fuel tank, alloy wheels and headlamp cowl are different. The exhaust design is also different on the Shotgun when compared to other 650 cc motorcycles. Other than this, the lighting elements, switch gear and adjustable levers are the same as the Super Meteor 650.

Royal Enfield has not officially announced the specs but it is the same engine that is doing duty on the Super Meteor 650. The 648 cc parallel twin-twin engine produces 47 bhp and 52 Nm on other 650 cc motorcycles. It comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox with slip and assist clutch.

Volvo plans half of its India sales to come from non-fossil fuel vehicles

Volvo plans half of its India sales to come from non-fossil fuel vehicles

Volvo Cars plans to increase the share of clean fuel vehicles in India. The Swedish auto giant has said that it aims to sell at least one non-fossil fuel car out of every two vehicles it will sell by the end of this decade. Volvo currently offers two electric SUVs – the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge – as part of its India fleet. It also sells three other models, all of which come with hybrid powertrain. Volvo’s India plan reflects the carmaker’s global ambition to go all-electric by 2030.

By: HT Auto Desk
| Updated on: 24 Nov 2023, 08:58 AM

Volvo wants non-fossil fuel vehicles to contribute half of its overall sales in India by 2030 as part of its global plan to go all-electric.

Volvo India has been pushing to cut down on ICE offerings for some time. During the Covid years, the carmaker updated its entire lineup by offering hybrid powertrain across all models sold in the country. Volvo recently discontinued one of its ICE model XC40. Besides the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, Volvo also sells XC60 and XC90 SUVs as well as S90 sedan.

Kamal Bali, President and Managing Director at Volvo Group in India, said that the carmaker plans to achieve carbon-neutral by 2040. “At Volvo, we have set target that by 2030, 50 per cent of our vehicles will be non-fossil fuel-based. They will be non-polluting. Balance 50 per cent will become non-zero emission by 2040,” Bali said during an event on Thursday.

Between January and September this year, the Swedish auto giant has registered 40 per cent growth in sales by delivering 1,751 units. Bulk of the carmaker’s sales in India came from Volvo XC60 SUV which contributed to 35 per cent of the total volume. It is powered by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, petrol engine which is mated to a 48V mild-hybrid system as standard.

Though ICE models still contribute largely to Volvo’s sales in India, the two EV offerings have also started to make their impact. Jyoti Malhotra, Managing Director at Volvo Car India, had said, “It has been a remarkable three quarters with an encouraging 40% sales growth from January to September 2023 as compared to last year, driven by the XC60 and our Pure Electric offerings XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge.”

Volvo launched the C40 Recharge electric SUV in September at a price of 61.25 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom). It comes with twin electric motors paired to a 78 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and an AWD drivetrain. The dual electric motors are capable of generating 402 bhp of peak power and 660 Nm of maximum torque. The EV is capable of accelerating 0-100 kmph in 4.7 seconds at a top speed of 180 kmph.

Simple One price, range, bookings cancelled

Simple One price, range, bookings cancelled

This story came to light when one of our readers shared with us that he had been contacted by Simple Energy to cancel his pre-booking. Since this came as a phone call, the customer was uncertain whether it was a scam, so he wrote an email to the company’s customer care helpline to confirm if this indeed was the case. This was the response he received from Simple Energy’s customer care email id:

Our team is attempting to reach all our customers via telephone. Meanwhile, our intention is to create awareness among our customers about the recent fraudulent happening forging Simpleenergy Private Limited. This affects our brand value as customers believe these imposters and lose their hard-earned money. Hence, we are taking this step of initiating the refund to all our customers.

We reached out to Simple Energy for a statement and this is what the company shared with us:

It has come to our attention that certain customers have received emails urging them to cancel their pre-bookings with Simple Energy. We understand the concern and wish to clarify the situation to alleviate any doubts or uncertainties. These emails were specifically sent to select customers residing in cities where fraudulent activities were detected, posing a potential risk to our company’s reputation. This proactive measure was taken to safeguard our customers and offer them the option of a refund, should they wish to reconsider their pre-bookings.”

We are also given to understand that the customer care service is handled by an external agency and that this has led to some miscommunication. Simple tells us that this email has not been sent to all pre-booking customers, despite what was mentioned in the email.

Nevertheless, the rationale mentioned by Simple does leave some questions. For one, it does not explain why the customer who shared this with us received this notification as he had made his booking in August 2021, well before any fraudulent activities may have begun. Beyond that, it’s also strange to see any company asking its customers to take their money back as a safeguard against potential fraudulent activities – regardless of whether those customers have actually been a victim of said fraud.

It does come across that there is another possibility here – perhaps the company is looking to ease the load of back orders as it navigates through the journey of setting up and stabilising its production capabilities. This theory is reinforced by what is mentioned further down in Simple Energy customer care email sent to the customer:

“Once we have an experience center in your city, you will be the first priority customer as per the sequence of your pre-book to be reached for delivery of Simple One. In the meantime, please stay tuned to our social media platforms for more updates and also on our website.”

After all, Simple Energy’s sales numbers have trickled down to a halt in the last few months.

Back in May 2023, Simple stated that deliveries would begin in June in Bengaluru, with other cities to follow soon. The company also stated at that point that it had a target of setting up ‘140 to 150’ showrooms in India over the next 8 to 10 months. However, as in the past, things haven’t gone as promised and according to government registration data, Simple Energy has delivered less than 40 scooters to date.

To be precise, the company sold 10 scooters in June, 14 in July and 13 in August. Since then, the company has not delivered any scooters, as of 23 November 2023. We asked Simple about this as well and this is what we were told:

“Regarding zero deliveries, it’s important to note that this was attributed to a comprehensive pilot program aimed at evaluating real-world scenarios and potential user-related challenges. Such assessments are a standard practice to ensure the utmost quality and customer satisfaction.

We are pleased to inform you that following the successful conclusion of our assessment phase, Simple Energy is now positioned favourably. As a result, we are diligently planning to scale up our operations. Anticipate a significant surge in scooter deliveries by the end of November or early December, signifying our commitment to meeting your expectations.”

Have you made a pre-booking for a Simple Energy electric scooter and if so, have you received similar communication from the company? Do let us know if that is the case.

Triumph Motorcycles has launched the new Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X single-cylinder bikes in Malaysia. The Triumph 400 twins are the brand’s most affordable motorcycles globally and were launched in India earlier this year. The bikes are made in India in partnership with Bajaj Auto at its facility in Chakan, Maharashtra. Malaysia is one of the first markets overseas to get the bikes, while the company has confirmed both the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X will arrive in Europe including its home market, the UK, by early 2024.

While the Triumph Speed 400 is more road-biased over the adventure-ready Scrambler 400 X, both bikes share the same engine, semi-digital instrument console, all-LED lighting and a 13-litre fuel tank. Coming to differences, the Speed 400’s design is inspired by the Speed Twin and gets smaller 17-inch alloy wheels with a lower seat height.

The Triumph Scrambler 400 X is inspired by the Scrambler 900 and 1200 and comes with 19-inch and 17-inch rear alloy wheels. There’s also Ride-by-Wire with switchable traction control, while dual-channel ABS is standard with the option to turn off the rear ABS on the Scrambler.

Triumph Scrambler 400 X
Triumph Scrambler 400 X does have more road presence than the Speed 400. This is mostly because of the exhaust, accessories and height.

The 2024 Triumph Speed 400 is priced at 26,900 Ringgit (approx. 4.80 lakh), while the Triumph Scrambler 400 X is priced at 29,900 Ringgit (approx. 5.33 lakh) in Malaysia. That’s substantially more expensive than the Indian versions. The new Triumph Speed 400 will take on the KTM 390 Duke, Modenas Dominar 400 (Bajaj Dominar 400 in India), BMW G 310 R, Kawasaki Z400 and the like. The Triumph Scrambler 400 X will take on the Royal Enfield Scram 411, BMW G 310 GS, and the upcoming Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 in the same space.

Nissan Qashqai and Juke EVs to be manufactured in UK, say reports

Japanese auto giant Nissan Motor is likely to manufacture the electric versions of its two India-bound models Qashqai and Juke in United Kingdom. According to reports by British broadcaster Sky News, the Japanese carmaker will announce the development tomorrow, November 24. It is expected that these two models will be made at the carmaker’s UK plant located in Sunderland. Both these models were showcased in India last year in their ICE avatar along with the new generation X-Trail SUV. Qashqai and Juke are expected to hit Indian roads soon.

Nissan Motor had showcased the Qashqai and Juke, along with the new generation X-Trail SUV as the three upcoming models for India.

Rishi Sunak, Prime Minister of UK, is expected to visit Nissan Motor’s facility in northern part of the country on Friday. He is expected to be present when the announcement will be made by Makoto Uchida, CEO at Nissan Motor. Earlier in September, Nissan Motor had confirmed that two of its upcoming electric vehicles will be manufactured at its UK facility. According to reports cited by news agency Reuters, Nissan Motor is likely to invest $1.25 billion in UK to manufacture new electric vehicles. However, the carmaker is yet to confirm which two models will be manufactured there.

Nissan Motor showcased the ICE and hybrid versions of the Qashqai and Juke in India in October last year. The Juke is smaller in size compared to Qashqai, and could rival the likes of Creta and Seltos when launched in India. Qashqai could aim at the popularity of Harrier and others. The carmaker is currently testing the road feasibility of these models. The Qashqai has already been spotted on Indian roads during test runs.

The transmission job is handled by Nissan’s Xtronic CVT gearbox. Nissan also offers a 1.5-litre unit mated to an ePower gearbox with Qashqai. This engine is capable of generating 156 bhp of power. Nissan Juke comes with a 1.00-litre petrol engine, mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT gearbox. The engine can generate 115 bhp of power and up to 200 Nm of peak torque.

New Royal Enfield Himalayan: Price expectation

New Royal Enfield Himalayan: Price expectation

The new Royal Enfield Himalayan is one of the most anticipated launches of 2023 and the Oragadam-based motorcycle maker will finally reveal the prices at the RE Motoverse on November 24. The biggest congregation of Royal Enfield owners and enthusiasts, the Motoverse is just the right venue to announce prices of the new adventure tourer which gets a complete overhaul over its predecessor.

The new Royal Enfield Himalayan gets a host of upgrades and is the most advanced motorcycle yet from the manufacturer

The new Royal Enfield Himalayan replaces the Himalayan 411 in the company’s lineup. The bike has been developed from the ground up using an all-new twin-spar frame and a larger capacity motor. The new Sherpa 450 engine is liquid-cooled, a first for Royal Enfield, and also gets a forged piston among other lightweight components. Not only is it a more premium motorcycle but also rides like one with the engine packing more power than before.

The new Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 gets a liquid-cooled motor with 39.4 bhp and 40 Nm, paired with a 6-speed gearbox

The new Himalayan also receives tech upgrades in the form of a digital console, another first for the company and completely developed in-house by Royal Enfield, which we expect to see in more motorcycles going forward. The system comes with smartphone connectivity enabling turn-by-turn navigation, call/SMS alerts, as well as alerts for engine, battery health and more. The Himalayan 450 is also the first bike from RE to get Ride-by-Wire (RbW) which brings two riding modes – Eco and Performance – while you also get LED lighting across the motorcycle.

The new Himalayan 450 marks a big departure from the traditional offerings and this is arguably the brand’s most advanced motorcycle yet. We rode the new ADV earlier this month and came back impressed with what it had to offer.

Watch: Royal Enfield Himalayan review: Adventure icon with brand new fashion

The outgoing Himalayan 411 tops out at 2.28 lakh (ex-showroom) and the new ADV is likely to command a substantial price hike. We expect the new Royal Enfield Himalayan to be priced from 2.60 lakh onwards with the premium justifiable given the extensive list of upgrades over the older model.

The 2024 Royal Enfield Himalayan will be sold in three variants – Base, Pass and Summit – with key differences being the colour schemes. Expect to see a price difference of 15,000-20,000 between the three variants. This should bring the on-road prices in most cities to around the 3 lakh mark. Do note all three variants will be launched with tube-type tyres and the brand will offer tubeless tyres in India at a later date, which will command a more premium price tag. The company will also offer a host of accessories on the new Himalayan.

Ather 450X price, new scooters in 2024, new family-oriented scooter, next-gen Ather 450

Ather 450X price, new scooters in 2024, new family-oriented scooter, next-gen Ather 450

One will be aimed at more family-oriented use, while the other will build on existing models’ performance.

Confirming our previous reports, Ather Energy CEO and co-founder Tarun Mehta has now officially confirmed the launch of two new electric scooters in 2024 via a social media post. One will be a new family-oriented electric scooter aimed to address a few issues with the existing 450 series that’s focused on performance; the other will be an evolution of the existing 450X with improved performance and more features.

  1. New family-oriented scooter will have affordable pricing
  2. Existing 450X to gain more performance and features
  3. Both models confirmed for launch in 2024

New family-oriented Ather scooter: what to expect?

The current 450S and 450X are sporty, fun-to-ride scooters, but their compact size doesn’t quite bode well for practicality. And that’s exactly what Ather will be looking to address with the new scooter, possibly with a larger and wider seat, a more spacious floorboard and larger boot space to better suit the needs of an urban commuter.

The scooter may be tuned for greater range and gentler performance in order to better suit its use case. It’ll also likely be priced below the existing 450 range in order to make it accessible to a wider audience.

“It’s designed with your entire family in mind, offering comfort, ample size, and a whole lot more – all wrapped up in one fantastic package. We’re ensuring it’s affordable, making the Ather family experience accessible to more people,” said Mehta.

New Ather 450 with improved performance

Mehta calls this scooter an “evolution” of the existing 450 series, which is already one of the quickest accelerating (from 0-40kph) scooters in the country with a top speed of 90kph. Perhaps the new model could bring in a small increment in acceleration and push the top speed to 100kph. A slightly updated design with new features will likely also be part of the package. However, this will be accompanied by a premium over the existing range, but one that Mehta says will be justifiable.

“This new iteration is set to be the absolute pinnacle of refined performance. It will have best-in-class features that will redefine your riding experience. We’re launching in early 2024, and yes, it comes with a premium price tag, but trust me, it’s worth every bit,” he added.

Triumph Rocket 3 recalled in the US over faulty rear brake

Triumph Rocket 3 recalled in the US over faulty rear brake

Triumph Motorcycles has recalled the Rocket 3 roadster in the US over a faulty rear brake setup. The Triumph Rocket 3 bikes manufactured since 2020 have been affected by the recall and the company will replace the necessary components to fix the same. The motorcycle is the brand’s flagship and the bike features the biggest production engine on a two-wheeler. The recall extends to the Rocket 3 GT, R and TFC variants.

The recall for the Triumph Rocket 3 has been initiated in the US for models manufactured since 2020

Triumph says that over 3,500 units of the Rocket 3 have been produced since 2020, which fall under the purview of the recall. These machines are equipped with a 12.7 mm rear brake master cylinder and the unit is unable to move the brake oil to the set distance. This has led to air bubbles forming inside the cylinder, which could further increase pedal travel while braking. This could be a dangerous issue while riding but Triumph has not reported any injuries so far due to the faulty braking system.

In order to fix the same, Triumph will install a larger 14 mm rear master cylinder, which should allow the flow of oil adequately. The recall is specific to the US at the moment and it needs to be seen if it will be extended to other markets. The Rocket 3 is sold in India as well and the bike arrives as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). The motorcycle is priced from a whopping 19.90 lakh, going up to 21.50 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

The Triumph Rocket 3 gets the massive 2,500 three-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine tuned to produce 166 bhp and 221 Nm of peak torque. The motor is paired with a 6-speed gearbox. 0-100 kmph comes up in 2.73 seconds. The bike has a full aluminium frame with 47 mm Showa USD front forks and a fully adjustable Showa monoshock at the rear. Braking performance comes from 320 mm front and 300 mm rear discs with Brembo Stylema calipers. The bike gets dual-channel ABS, Cornering ABS, four riding modes, and more.

Toyota to set up its third plant in Karnataka, production to commence in 2026

Toyota to set up its third plant in Karnataka, production to commence in 2026

Toyota has further stated that it will invest about 3,300 crore for building the new production facility in Karnataka, which will be its third in India. Also, this plant is claimed to create employment opportunities for approximately 2,000 people. The Japanese car manufacturer has claimed that the decision to set up the new manufacturing facility comes as part of the auto company’s strategy to increase local production in India. The company currently operates two plants in India with a total production capacity of around 3.42 lakh units per annum. The automaker has planned two shifts for the new plant that can be scaled up with a third shift if and when needed. Currently, the two production facilities of the automaker are working three shifts to cater to pending orders.

Watch: Toyota Innova HyCross: First Drive Impressions

Speaking about the new production facility, Masahiko Maeda, Chief Operating Officer of Asia region for the carmaker, said that the Indian market has always been of great importance to the company. He also said that Toyota is hopeful that this new production facility will further elevate the automaker’s ambition to grow in the Indian market and globally. He also hinted that the new plant will play a crucial role in the brand’s strategy to make greener powertrain-equipped cars.

TKM started operations at its first plant in India in December 1999, which currently manufactures models like Innova Hycross, Innova Crysta, Fortuner and Legender. This facility has an installed production capacity of 1.32 lakh units every year. The second plant of the automaker is located at the same site and started production in December 2010. This facility has an annual production capacity of 2.10 lakh units and it rolls out models like Camry Hybrid, Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Hilux. TKM also sells models like Glanza and Rumion in India, which are sourced from Maruti Suzuki as part of the global collaboration between Suzuki and Toyota. The automaker also imports the Vellfire and LC 300 models to India as Completely Built Units (CBU).

Toyota Hyryder price, new manufacturing plant in India, investment plans

Toyota Hyryder price, new manufacturing plant in India, investment plans

First model from new plant to roll out in 2026.

Toyota has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the government of Karnataka to set up a third manufacturing plant in India, which would increase its production capacity by 1 lakh units per annum. The upcoming plant will also be situated at Bidadi near Bangalore – near the existing two –and will attract an investment of around Rs 3,300 crores. It will also generate about 2,000 new jobs.

  1. Toyota to invest around Rs 3,300 crore for new plant
  2. Will be the production base of an all-new three-row SUV
  3. To have a production capacity of 1 lakh units per annum

Toyota’s existing plants at Bidadi have a combined output of about 4 lakh units per annum, and this new plant – operational by 2026 – will add about 30 percent to Toyota’s production capacity. This announcement comes on the back of the brand completing 25 years in India.

This new plant will be the primary production base for an upcoming three-row SUV, which, as we have reported previously, will be a longer version of the Corolla Cross sold overseas. It’s codenamed the 340D and Toyota is expected to produce 60,000 units annually, with a launch likely by 2026.

Toyota three-row SUV to roll out from new plant

The Corolla Cross-based SUV for India will be underpinned by Toyota’s TNGA-C platform, which is also used by the Innova Hycross. Globally, the Corolla Cross has a wheelbase of 2,640mm, but the India-spec version will likely be lengthened by about 150mm, enough to add a third row of seats.

Not much is known on the styling front, but Toyota could choose to differentiate it from the Corolla Cross with a new nose and new soft parts, including a plastic bumper, grille and headlights. Given the additional length, it will also have a completely new rear end. The upcoming 340D SUV, however, will not be specific to India, and is likely to be exported to other markets as well, although it’s not known if it will spawn a Maruti derivative.

Future IMV 0 platform-based models headed to India

At the Japan Mobility Show that concluded last month, Toyota showcased the new IMV 0 ladder-frame platform, a low-cost version of the IMV platform that underpins the Innova Crysta and Fortuner. This platform will spawn more affordable alternatives of vehicles like the Hilux pickup truck and Fortuner SUV and is India-bound. It, however, remains to be seen which plant it will be produced in.
