The MG Windsor EV is all set to be officially launched in India today and will be the first crossover utility vehicle (CUV) from the manufacturer that also sells the ZS EV and the Comet EV in the country. While JSW MG Motor India has expertise in offering battery-powered mobility options, this is the first time it is entering the CUV space and is looking to cement its credentials of offering zero-emission, tech-laden cars that also offer great comfort. Now while the Windsor EV is essentially a re-badged version of the Wuling Cloud EV that is already sold in several international markets, the India-specific model is likely to feature some changes that will be unique to here. What does the name 'Windsor' mean?

On August 1, JSW MG Motor India confirmed that the Cloud EV in India will be called the Windsor EV. The company said that the name is named after Windsor Castle in the UK. A press release issued by the company at the time stated, “Windsor Castle is renowned across the world as a symbol of royalty and majesty, which is reflected in every detail of this CUV, which exudes fine craftsmanship, premiumness and spaciousness.”

Why is JSW MG Motor focusing on EVs?

MG is not one of the major players in the Indian car market. But it still sees a lot of potential in the nascent electric car market, where Tata Motors has a huge share. Companies like Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai are either not present or at least missing from the sub-brands. In the Rs 20 lakh price segment, new players have a level playing field. Around 35 to 40 per cent of MG's total sales in the country come from its electric models – the ZS EV and the Comet EV. Adding a third model in the form of the Windsor EV could add traction for the company, while other companies are also looking to enter the battery-mobility space. Joint venture between MG and JSW Group

In 2023, MG, owned by China's SAIC Motor, signed a joint venture with India's JSW Group. Battery-powered cars are seen as a key driver of growth, with executives claiming at least one new product is launched every three to six months here. The same executives also claim that the company is aiming to sell one million EVs in India by 2030.

A look at MG's India visit

MG began its journey in India in 2019 and the Hector was its go-to product at the time. The Hector remains its most popular model and competes in the mid-size SUV space. In the following years, the company also rolled out models such as a three-row version of the Hector called the Hector Plus, Astor, Gloster, ZS EV and Comet EV. The company has repeatedly underlined its ability to offer tech-heavy vehicles that primarily appeal to the young car-buying audience. But despite the options in its product portfolio, it is the Hector that remains the power player for the brand here.

New Delhi. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Tuesday announced significant changes in the National Highway Fee Rules. The new rules, called the “National Highway Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Amendment Rules, 2024”, introduce a zero-fee policy for the first 20 kilometres of travel on national highways. That is, you will not have to pay any toll for a journey of 20 kilometres.

This provision will be applicable only for those vehicles which are equipped with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) on-board unit. As per the latest amendment, vehicles other than those with national permit will not have to pay any fee for the first 20 kms of travel on national highway, permanent bridge, bypass or tunnel.

Toll will be charged only if the vehicle is driven more than 20 km
If a distance of more than 20 km is travelled in a day, users will be charged toll only for the actual travel distance over 20 km. The change is aimed at reducing the financial burden on drivers for short journeys, while maintaining a fair fee structure for longer journeys.

The order issued by the ministry said, “Under the Global Navigation Satellite System based user fee collection system, the driver, owner or person in charge of a motor vehicle other than a national permit vehicle using the same section will be charged zero-fee for travel up to 20 km per direction. If the distance exceeds 20 km, then only the actual travel distance will be charged.”

Earlier, in July, the Road Ministry had announced the implementation of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based toll collection system on a pilot basis on select national highways as an additional feature along with FASTag.

Repsol began sponsoring Honda when they entered Grand Prix racing in 1995 and since then they have enjoyed immense success with multiple constructors titles and riders championships.

Spanish oil company Repsol will no longer sponsor the Honda MotoGP team from next season, the Japanese motorcycle maker said on Sunday, ending an iconic partnership that spanned three decades.

Repsol began sponsoring Honda when they entered Grand Prix racing in 1995 and since then they have enjoyed immense success with multiple constructors titles and riders championships, riding greats such as Mick Doohan, Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez.

With Repsol as the main sponsor, Honda achieved 15 premier class world championships, 10 premier class team championships, 183 premier class wins and 455 premier class podiums.

“After 30 years of collaboration at the highest level of motorcycle racing, Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) and Repsol will part ways at the conclusion of the 2024 MotoGP World Championship,” Honda said in a statement.

“Honda HRC and Repsol have enjoyed a partnership that has become synonymous with success at the highest level.

“Beyond the sponsorship, it has been a true collaboration between both companies, striving to continue as a reference in Grand Prix motorcycling.”

Honda have struggled since Marquez won the last of his six MotoGP titles in 2019, with the Spaniard missing the entire 2020 season after an opening race crash.

The team soon fell behind Italian manufacturers Ducati and Aprilia, and Marquez also left the team at the end of the 2023 season when he switched to Gresini Racing – which uses Ducati machines.

Marquez's departure also sees Red Bull cut its ties with Honda, which has failed to produce a top-10 finish in MotoGP this season with either Joan Mir or Luca Marini.

Highways and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has raised the issue of the price of electric vehicles and their sale many times.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari says that the price of electric cars will be equal to that of petrol cars in the next 2 years. Their sales will start increasing as the price will become affordable for the common man. Nitin Gadkari has been in favor of electric mobility for a long time. Speaking at the 64th ACMA Annual Session, Gadkari emphasized on measures to make electric vehicles affordable for the general public.

Road safety is also a matter of concern
Gadkari also reflected on the skepticism he received from major automobile manufacturers a decade ago. “Ten years ago, when I was pushing for EVs, the automobile giants in India did not take me seriously. Now, they tell me that maybe they have missed an opportunity,” Gadkari said. He stressed that the industry's outlook on EVs has changed significantly.

During his address, the minister also urged automobile companies to contribute to road safety initiatives through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes. He emphasised that road safety remains a key concern for his ministry, as poorly designed and engineered roads are one of the major causes of accidents in India.

Subsidy is needed to promote e-vehicles
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also said that he is not against giving additional subsidies or incentives for electric vehicles (EVs) if the Finance Ministry or the Industry Ministry decides to implement them.

Gadkari said, “I am not against any additional subsidy or incentive for electric vehicles. If the Finance Minister and the Industry Minister want to give more, I have no problem.”

However, he pointed out that incentives would not be needed after two years, as by then the cost of EVs is expected to be at par with petrol and diesel vehicles. Nevertheless, he confirmed his openness to any further incentives during this transition period.

Shaoma will compete directly with Wuling Hongguang Mini EV. The demand for micro electric cars is the highest in China. The price of Bestune Shaoma is between 30,000 to 50,000 yuan (about Rs 3.47 lakh to Rs 5.78 lakh). It is expected that it will soon be launched in the Indian market as well, where it will compete directly with Tata Tiago EV and MG Comet EV.

Bestune showcased the Shaoma at the Shanghai Auto Show in early April 2023. It offered both hardtop and convertible variants. Currently, the hardtop variant is on sale, while the convertible variant has not been confirmed to be available for sale in the future.

This car has a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which makes it modern. The dashboard has an attractive dual-tone theme, which makes it even more stylish. The dual-tone color scheme of Xiaomi is such that it looks inspired by an animation film. It has large square headlamps with rounded edges, which make its profile attractive. Apart from this, aerodynamic wheels have been used in it, which can be helpful in increasing its range.

Bestune is based on the Shaoma FME platform, which includes dedicated chassis for electric vehicles (EVs) and range extenders. Earlier, a ride-hailing EV called NAT was also built on the same platform. The FME platform has two sub-platforms: A1 and A2. The A1 sub-platform is suitable for subcompact and compact cars with a wheelbase of 2700-2850 mm, while the A2 platform is used for cars with a wheelbase of 2700-3000 mm. Under this platform, the range of EVs can be 800 km and the range of range extenders can be more than 1200 km. Both platforms support 800V architecture.

Mahindra Thar: Engine and Performance
Talking about the powertrain of Mahindra Thar, its diesel engine is 2184 cc and 1497 cc while the petrol engine is 1997 cc. It is available with automatic and manual transmission. The mileage of Thar is 15.2 km/liter depending on the variant and fuel type. Thar is a 4 seater and its length is 3985 (mm), width is 1820 (mm) and wheelbase is 2450 (mm).

The company is selling the Mahindra Thar 3-door variant in 3 engine options, which include 1.5 liter CRDe diesel, 2.2 liter mHawk diesel and 2.0 liter mStallion petrol. The 1.5 liter diesel engine is mated to a manual transmission while the 2.2 liter diesel and 2.0 liter petrol engines are offered with manual or automatic gearbox options.

World EV Day: Which Indian states are best for electric vehicles?

Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Delhi and Karnataka have a strong position in terms of EV sales and charging infrastructure. But there are some states that have performed better in terms of EV charging infrastructure.

There is a power war going on among Indian states. It is a war for good, a war to adopt new technology and a war for zero-emission mobility. It is a race to win the highest electric vehicle (EV) adoption. With a clear shift towards electric mobility, many states are positioning themselves as leaders in EV adoption and the infrastructure that supports such mobility options.

As part of World EV Day celebrations, we take a closer look at what each state in India has done to accelerate EV adoption and how many EVs have been sold across states so far by 2024.

What is the status of electric vehicles in Uttar Pradesh?

Uttar Pradesh leads the country in terms of total EV registrations with over 2 lakh electric vehicles. A large portion of this number is of 3-wheelers. The state's population and economic activities play a vital role, but the government's proactive policies have helped drive EV adoption in the state. Recently, the UP government also announced the Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy to be extended till 2027. The EV breakdown by vehicle type in UP is as follows:

  • Two-wheeler EVs – over 38,000 sold
  • Three-wheeler EVs – over 1.6 lakh sold
  • Four-wheeler EVs – over 2,800 sold

What has Maharashtra done to promote the adoption of electric vehicles?

With over 1.26 lakh registered vehicles, Maharashtra ranks second after Uttar Pradesh in terms of EV-friendly policies. The state's governance policies have made it conducive for early adoption of electric vehicles. Moreover, Maharashtra is also emerging as an EV manufacturing hub, attracting companies like Tata Motors and Mahindra Electric. The breakup of EVs sold in Maharashtra is as follows:

  • Two-wheeler EVs – over 1 lakh sold
  • Three-wheeler EV – over 8,500 sold
  • Four-wheeler EVs – over 8,000 sold

How is the Karnataka EV movement progressing?

Karnataka is projected to sell over 99,000 vehicles in 2024, making it another contender for the title of most EV-friendly state. The Karnataka Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy aims to boost EV sales and establish the state as an EV and battery manufacturing hub. Karnataka's capital Bengaluru has already emerged as a major EV adopter thanks to its tech-savvy population. The sales of various vehicles are as follows:

  • Two-wheeler EVs – over 86,000 sold
  • Three-wheeler EV – over 4,800 sold
  • Four-wheeler EVs – over 6,800 sold

Can Tamil Nadu lead the EV race?

Tamil Nadu, which sold around 73,900 vehicles, is not only encouraging EV adoption but is also a leader in EV manufacturing. Tamil Nadu is already home to major auto manufacturing companies. The dual approach of promoting EV usage along with becoming a manufacturing hub has put Tamil Nadu in a strong position in India's EV landscape. The state report is as follows:

  • Two-wheeler EVs – over 64,000 sold
  • Three-wheeler EVs – over 4,200 sold
  • Four-wheeler EVs – over 4,600 sold

Will Bihar stealth and get ahead in the EV game?

Bihar has sold more than 65,000 electric vehicles in 2024 and a large portion of this number is three-wheelers, just like Uttar Pradesh. Below is a breakdown of the vehicles sold according to their types:

  • Two-wheeler EVs – over 10,900 sold
  • Three-wheeler EV – over 54,000 sold
  • Four wheeler EVs – more than 500 sold

Which state in India has the highest penetration of electric vehicles?

While the population and economic condition of a state play a big role in determining the fate of EV adoption, it is also important to note which states lead in terms of EV to population ratio. In this regard, Goa dominates, with EVs accounting for 14 per cent of total vehicle sales. Tripura is in second place with 13.73 per cent penetration of battery-powered mobility options, followed by Chandigarh (13.50 per cent), Delhi (10.72 per cent) and Assam (9.93 per cent).

Which state has the maximum number of EV charging stations?

Maharashtra leads in terms of charging stations, with 3,079 charging stations across the state. Delhi has 1,886 charging stations, while Karnataka has 1,081 stations. This is as per government data available till February 2024.

जीप इंडिया कंपास पर 3.15 लाख रुपये तक के लाभ दे रही है। इसमें 2.5 लाख रुपये की नकद छूट शामिल है। 18.99 लाख रुपये से 28.33 लाख रुपये के बीच की कीमत वाली कंपास केवल 170hp, 2.0-लीटर डीजल इंजन के साथ आती है जिसमें मैनुअल और ऑटोमैटिक ट्रांसमिशन विकल्प हैं। केवल टॉप-स्पेक मॉडल एस वेरिएंट में 4×4 विकल्प मिलता है। भारत में जीप की सबसे सस्ती एसयूवी टाटा हैरियर और महिंद्रा XUV700 जैसी कारों को टक्कर देती है।

वोक्सवैगन ताइगुन

3.07 लाख रुपये तक की बचत करें

वैरिएंट के आधार पर, Volkswagen Taigun पर 3.07 लाख रुपये तक के लाभ प्राप्त किए जा सकते हैं। अधिकतम छूट MY2023 Taigun 1.5 GT की अनसोल्ड इन्वेंट्री पर है। 1.0-लीटर इंजन वाली MY2024 Taiguns पर 60,000 रुपये से 1.25 लाख रुपये तक की छूट मिल रही है। Taigun की कीमत 11.70-20 लाख रुपये है और इसका मुकाबला Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Toyota Hyryder, मारुति ग्रैंड विटारा और हाल ही में लॉन्च हुई Tata Curvv और Citroen Basalt जैसे मॉडलों से है।

महिंद्रा XUV400

ग्रैंड विटारा लाइन-अप पर छूट पिछले महीने की तरह ही है। 115hp पेट्रोल-इलेक्ट्रिक पावरट्रेन द्वारा संचालित और 18.43-19.93 लाख रुपये की कीमत वाली स्ट्रॉन्ग हाइब्रिड रेंज पर 1.28 लाख रुपये तक का लाभ मिल रहा है। माइल्ड-हाइब्रिड लाइन-अप और CNG वेरिएंट पर अधिकतम छूट – जिनकी कीमत 10.99 लाख रुपये से 17.01 लाख रुपये है – क्रमशः 73,100 रुपये और 33,100 रुपये है। दोनों में 1.5-लीटर इंजन है, जो पेट्रोल पर 103hp और CNG पर 88hp बनाता है। पेट्रोल वेरिएंट में 6-स्पीड ऑटोमैटिक ऑप्शन और मैनुअल फॉर्म में AWD का विकल्प मिलता है। CNG कारों में स्टैण्डर्ड के तौर पर मैनुअल गियरबॉक्स मिलता है।

हुंडई अल्काज़ार

90,000 रुपये तक की बचत करें

अल्काज़ार फेसलिफ्ट की बुकिंग शुरू हो गई है और यही वजह है कि मौजूदा मॉडल को 90,000 रुपये तक की छूट पर बेचा जा रहा है। यह छूट 160hp, 1.5-लीटर टर्बो-पेट्रोल पर मैनुअल और डुअल-क्लच ऑटोमैटिक विकल्पों के साथ और 116hp, 1.5-लीटर डीजल पर मैनुअल और टॉर्क कन्वर्टर विकल्पों के साथ लागू है। अल्काज़ार हुंडई की टाटा सफारी और महिंद्रा XUV700 की प्रतिद्वंद्वी है।

होंडा एलिवेट

75,000 रुपये तक की बचत करें

होंडा एलिवेट पर वैरिएंट के आधार पर 75,000 रुपये तक के लाभ मिलते हैं। छूट अप्रैल 2024 से पहले निर्मित इकाइयों पर लागू है; होंडा ने उस समय सभी पांच सीटों के लिए छह एयरबैग, तीन-पॉइंट ईएलआर सीट बेल्ट और सीट बेल्ट रिमाइंडर जैसी सुरक्षा सुविधाएँ जोड़ी हैं। अप्रैल के बाद बनी एलिवेट एसयूवी पर 65,000 रुपये के लाभ मिल रहे हैं। होंडा की मिडसाइज़ एसयूवी हुंडई क्रेटा और किआ सेल्टोस को टक्कर देती है और इसकी कीमत 11.91 लाख रुपये से 16.51 लाख रुपये के बीच है।
