New Delhi. America's enmity with China and Russia has now come to the fore on cars. The Joe Biden government of the United States is preparing to ban smart cars that come with software and technology from China and Russia. The US government has cited national security behind this move. Let us tell you, this is not the first time that China has faced such restrictions. Earlier, the US government has also banned Chinese tech companies Huawei and ZTE, accusing them of secretly monitoring its citizens.

The US Commerce Department is expected to propose a sweeping ban on the use of Chinese hardware and software in connected and self-driving vehicles on American roads. The US government has expressed concern that Chinese companies could collect sensitive information about drivers and infrastructure using their software.

America may lose control over cars
US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told reporters in a conference call on Sunday that a US government investigation that began in February found that software and hardware from China and Russia embedded in US vehicles posed a number of national security risks, including the potential for hacking to gain remote control of cars and the theft of drivers' personal data.

“In extreme circumstances, an adversary could shut down or take control of all vehicles running on its software in the United States at the same time, potentially causing accidents or blocking roads,” he said.

Ban may be imposed from 2027
According to a CNN report, this rule will not apply to cars with Chinese software already on US roads. According to the Commerce Department, the software ban will apply to vehicles manufactured from 2027 and the hardware ban will apply to vehicles manufactured from 2030.

The proposed regulatory action is part of a broader struggle between the world's two largest economies, the United States and China, to secure supply chains for the key computing technology of the future, from semiconductors to AI software. China, in particular, has invested heavily in the connected car market, and progress made by Chinese manufacturers in Europe has made the US nervous.

The Chinese government has its own concerns about the data being collected by Tesla's electric cars. Because of this, Tesla vehicles are banned from entering many sensitive premises in China.

What are connected cars?
Connected car feature is available in today's modern cars that run on the internet. Many features in it are controlled by Bluetooth and Internet through software. Modern cars, buses or trucks are coming with connected features whose data is recorded by the companies so that facilities can be provided to the person driving it. This is a kind of network through which cars remain connected and exchange information with the server. This process involves hardware and software that use Bluetooth, WiFi and cellular technology.

The proposal has a 30-day public comment period and the Commerce Department aims to issue a final regulation before the end of the Biden administration. The US government has said that an economic analysis of the costs expected for automakers and consumers to comply with the proposed rule will also be released.
