Tata Motors is expected to launch around eight new models in coming days. Some of these models, including the Punch EV and Harrier EV, have already been confirmed for launch by next year.

Tata Motors is currently the leading carmaker in India in the electric vehicle segment. It offers models like Nexon EV, Tiago EV and Tigor EV. Tata also has two of India’s best-selling SUVs in Nexon and Punch. The carmaker recently launched the facelift version of the Harrier and Safari SUVs. Besides EVs and ICE vehicles, Tata also offers a few CNG models including the Tigor, Tiago, Punch and Altroz. The carmaker will expand all these portfolios with new models in coming days.

Here is a look at some of the new and upcoming cars from Tata Motors stable worth waiting for.

Punch is the smallest SUV in Tata Motors’ lineup in India. The rival to Hyundai Exter, Punch is available in both petrol and diesel versions along with CNG kit too. In August this year, Tata Motors confirmed that it will launch four electric vehicles by early 2024. These upcoming electric vehicles also include the Punch EV, which has already been spotted a number of times during test runs. According to reports, the Punch EV will use the same Ziptron technology that is doing duty on the Nexon EV. The size of the battery could be the ones used for Tigor EV or the Nexon EV. Tata Punch EV could offer range of more than 300 kms in a single charge in the long-range version.

Tata Motors showcased the Curvv Concept model in 2022 highlighting how its design language will change for upcoming models. A year later, the carmaker is preparing to launch Curvv in the production form. Tata had showcased the ICE version of the Curvv at the Auto Expo held earlier this year. Sailesh Chandra, MD at Tata Motors, had confirmed that the Curvv ICE version will be launched in India ahead of its EV avatar by 2024. With either 1.2-litre and 1.5-litre petrol engines under its hood, the Curvv SUV is expected to take on the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara among others in the compact segment.

Tata Curvv EV

Showcased first as an electric concept, the Curvv SUV is likely to see its EV version launching in India after the ICE version. The Curvv EV will be based on Tata Motor’s X1 platform which will be heavily reworked to become EV ready. According to reports, the expected range of the Curvv electric SUV will be between 400 kms and 500 kms in a single charge. It is not clear if Tata Motors will use the same battery the Nexon EV facelift uses.

Tata Harrier EV

Tata Motors unveiled the Harrier EV at Auto Expo 2023 earlier this year. The carmaker has confirmed that the EV version of Tata’s flagship SUV will go on sale in 2024. It has been spotted testing on roads ahead of its launch within the next few months. Built on the Gen 2 EV architecture, the Harrier EV will come with V2L and V2V charging facilities. As far as design is concerned, the unit showcased by the carmaker at the Auto Expo is slightly different from the Harrier facelift SUV launched in October. Tata Motors has not revealed much about the powertrain and its specifications yet.

Tata Altroz EV

Showcased at the Auto Expo 2020 in concept form, Tata Altroz EV is one of India’s most awaited electric cars. This would be the second hatchback from the carmaker after the Tiago to get an electric version. The Tata Altroz EV is expected to draw power from the automaker’s Ziptron powertrain, which would comprise a permanent magnet AC motor channelling energy to the front wheels via a single-speed transmission. Expect the Altroz EV’s lithium-ion battery pack to offer a range of around 300 kms in a single charge, which could come with fast charging capability.

The Altroz premium hatchback is also expected to get its most powerful variant in the Racer version, which was showcased at the Auto Expo 2023. The sporty-looking version of the hatchback, complete with a dual-tone theme of red and black with white stripes, could be Tata’s answer to the likes if Hyundai i20 N Line. The Altroz Racer is powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. It produces 120 bhp and 170 Nm of peak torque. These power outputs are more than the Altroz iTurbo. Also, the gearbox has been upgraded, the Altroz Racer gets a 6-speed unit instead of a 5-speed unit.

Tata Nexon CNG

The Nexon SUV, Tata Motors’ best-selling car in India, is currently offered with petrol, diesel and electric versions. However, the carmaker could complete Nexon’s family with the introduction of its twin-cylinder iCNG technology too. The carmaker recently launched the CNG version of Punch SUV. There are talks that Tata Motors is also planning to use the same technology in Nexon too. The sub-compact SUV’s key rival Maruti Suzuki Brezza is the only model in the segment which is offered with CNG technology.

The much-awaited Sierra SUV from Tata Motors was first showcased back in 2020 during Auto Expo. In the 2023 edition of the auto show, Tata Motors returned with an EV concept version of the SUV. Tata Motors has confirmed that the Sierra EV will be launched in India by 2025.

All-New Duster is built on the CMF-B platform which is a flexible platform that was first used on the latest Sandero and Logan models, then on Jogger. The new platform has helped in increasing space for the passengers, and luggage and has also helped in electrification of the SUV.

The 2024 Duster comes with 4×4 Terrain Control with 5 driving modes – Auto, Snow, Mud/Sand, Off-road and Eco. The 4×4 versions get a ground clearance of 217 mm with an approach angle of 31° and a departure angle of 36°.

The SUV now comes with a new 7-inch digital cluster and a new 10.1-inch central touchscreen. There is wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Arkamys 3D Sound System and navigation with real-time traffic data.

The 2024 Renault Duster is based on the Bigster concept.

Powering the 2024 Renault Duster are three engine options – Hybrid 140, TCe 130 and Eco-G 100. The four-cylinder, 1.6-litre petrol engine comes mated to two electric motors and an electric automatic gearbox. The petrol engine produces 92 bhp whereas one electric motor produces 48 bhp and the other motor is a high-voltage starter generator. The battery pack on offer is a 1.2 kWh unit that can be charged using brake regeneration. Moreover, the engine always starts on electric power.

Then there is a new 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that runs on Miller cycle with a 48V mild hybrid motor. The electric motor helps the combustion engine when the car starts or accelerates and this also helps in reducing average consumption. The regenerative braking system charges the 0.8 kWh battery. This powertrain will be offered with a 6-speed gearbox in the 4×2 and 4×4 versions.

Tata Motors launches its fourth vehicle scrapping centre in Chandigarh

Tata Motors launches its fourth vehicle scrapping centre in Chandigarh

Tata Motors has opened a new vehicle scrapping facility, its fourth, in Chandigarh today (November 28). Announcing the start of the new facility, the carmaker said the state-of-the-art facility will be able to scrap around 12,000 end-of-life vehicles each year. The vehicle manufacturer further stated that the new facility is named as Re.Wi.Re, which stands for Recycle with Respect. The new facility was unveiled by Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility on Tuesday.

| Updated on: 28 Nov 2023, 13:38 PM

Besides the new vehicle scrappage facility in Chandigarh, Tata Motors also has such centres in three other cities including Jaipur, Bhubaneswar and Surat.

Tata Motors said that the facility has been developed and operated by its partner Dada Trading Company. According to the carmaker, the facility will help scrapping of vehicles using environment-friendly processes. The facility, which is fully digitalised, will be able to scrap both passenger and commercial vehicles. It has dedicated centres to dismantle components like batteries, tyres, as well as fuel, oil, liquid and gas. The carmaker said the scrapping centre has dedicated cell-type and line-type dismantling for both type of vehicles.

This new vehicle scrapping centre is the fourth such facility run by Tata Motors. Previously, the carmaker had opened three such centres in Jaipur, Bhubaneshwar and Surat. Shailesh Chandra, MD at Tata Motors, said, “This state-of-the-art facility not only emphasises our unwavering commitment to responsible manufacturing but also represents our dedication to creating a greener and cleaner environment. The establishment of the fourth such facility is a testament to our relentless pursuit of reducing carbon emissions, promoting a circular economy and cultivating a culture of recycling.” In September this year, Tata Motors inaugurated its Surat vehicle scrapping facility. It is capable of recycling 15,000 vehicles every year.

Tata Motors said scrapping of old vehicles will help in getting rid of polluting vehicles and make way for safer and more fuel-efficient vehicles to enter the market. It echoes Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s vision to discard old vehicles. Gadkari had said that the Centre’s vehicle scrapping policy will increase automobile sales by 18 per cent. He had also said that using the raw materials sourced from scrapped vehicles will save 33 per cent cost on raw material procurement.

The Vehicle Scrappage Policy introduced for the first time in August 2021, focuses on phasing out old and unfit vehicles across India in order to reduce the vehicular pollution level as the older vehicles are known for polluting the environment more than the newer models. This policy aims to de-register private cars that are aged more than 20 years and commercial vehicles aged more than 15 years.

Maruti Suzuki to hike prices of its cars from January

Maruti Suzuki to hike prices of its cars from January

If you are planning to buy a Maruti Suzuki car soon, you have just one month to drive home one before it gets costlier. Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, has announced today (November 27) that it will increase the price of its models from New Year. The new prices will be applicable from January 1 next year. However, Maruti Suzuki has not specified if the fresh price hike will be applicable across all models and also the rate of price increase. The latest hike in Maruti Suzuki car prices will be implemented due to rising production costs.

Maruti Suzuki has announced that it will increase the prices of its cars in India from January 1 next year. (REUTERS)

On Monday, a regulatory filing from Maruti Suzuki said that the hike has become necessary due to ‘increased cost pressure driven by overall inflation and increased commodity prices.’ However, the carmaker assured that it is taking steps to minimise its effect on buyers. It said, “While the company makes maximum efforts to reduce cost and offset the increase, it may have to pass on some increase to the market. This price increase shall vary across models.”

Maruti Suzuki has not specified the quantum of the proposed price hike. The carmaker currently sells small to mid-size cars with few in the compact or large segment. Alto, its entry-level model as well as the smallest car in its lineup, comes at a starting price of 3.54 lakh (ex-showroom). The Invicto MPV, based on Toyota Innova HyCross, is the largest car Maruti sells. The price of Invicto starts from 24.80 lakh (ex-showroom).

Models like Baleno, Swift and WagonR are the three top-selling cars from the Maruti stable. These three cars generally are the highest selling vehicles in India on a monthly basis. Of late, Maruti Suzuki has also stepped up its SUV game, and has become the largest SUV manufacturer with models like Brezza, Fronx, Grand Vitara and Jimny as offerings. Maruti Suzuki has grabbed 22% of the SUV market share, so far in FY24, which is quite close to its target of 25% for the financial year. The Grand Vitara compact SUV, rival to the likes of Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, recently became the fastest model in its category to clock one lakh sales since its launch last year.

Toyota hopes SUVs will dominate Indian passenger vehicle market in 2024

Toyota hopes SUVs will dominate Indian passenger vehicle market in 2024

Toyota hopes the Indian passenger vehicle market will continue its growth momentum of 2023 into next year. The Japanese car manufacturer also believes that SUVs will continue to propel the growth momentum of the country’s PV market in 2024, just like in 2023. Speaking to PTI, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Executive Vice President and Country Head Vikram Gulati said that the Indian passenger vehicle market would carry forward the momentum of 2023 to the next purely driven by economic fundamentals, having already moved beyond pent-up demand-induced growth.

By: HT Auto Desk
| Updated on: 26 Nov 2023, 12:13 PM

Toyota hopes SUVs will push the Indian passenger vehicle market’s growth momentum in 2024.

In 2023, the Indian market witnessed the rapid growth of SUVs, which even outpaced the demand for hatchbacks and small cars that have been conventionally the bestselling segment in the country for decades. Gulati believes that SUVs are expected to witness fast growth in general in 2024, while the mid to higher end of the segment will see faster acceleration. He also said that the small cars category will remain a concern for the automakers.

The growth in the Indian passenger vehicle market will be very healthy in 2024, believes Gulati. “I think the market is growing. It will continue to grow in a very healthy way. We are well beyond the part when people were saying this is pent-up demand. We have built much beyond that, and the festive season has seen very good pickup,” he said talking about the outlook for 2024. He also stated that spending is going to be good in terms of people wanting personal mobility.

In 2023, the total sales of passenger vehicles in India are expected to cross the 40 lakh unit mark. In 2022, PV sales were at 37.93 lakh units, against 30.82 lakh in 2021. Clearly, the sales of passenger vehicles in India are moving upward at a fast pace, leaving behind the pandemic shock. SUVs are playing a major role in this growth momentum.

The Toyota official believes that the current shift towards SUVs will continue in 2024 with more consumers willing to pay an additional amount for better features and safety. “In terms of performance and convenience, I think there is a very clear sign that customers will not compromise on that. What that basically means is going forward, we’ll see much of the current trend magnifying itself. Even within the SUVs, we see the mid to higher and SUVs growing,” he said.

While the SUVs are witnessing an ever-increasing demand and sales, small cars witnessing a significant slump in retail numbers. This remains a concern for the automakers and propelling the OEMs to shift towards utility vehicles. Speaking about this, Gulati said, “The challenge as we see today is more towards the smaller car segment. That will be interesting to see how that plays out.”

Toyota Kirloskar Motor is set for a record year in terms of sales in 2023. It has already clocked 1.92 lakh units in the January-October period of 2023, beating the previous highest yearly sales of 1.72 lakh units sold in 2012.

Volvo plans half of its India sales to come from non-fossil fuel vehicles

Volvo Cars plans to increase the share of clean fuel vehicles in India. The Swedish auto giant has said that it aims to sell at least one non-fossil fuel car out of every two vehicles it will sell by the end of this decade. Volvo currently offers two electric SUVs – the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge – as part of its India fleet. It also sells three other models, all of which come with hybrid powertrain. Volvo’s India plan reflects the carmaker’s global ambition to go all-electric by 2030.

Volvo wants non-fossil fuel vehicles to contribute half of its overall sales in India by 2030 as part of its global plan to go all-electric.

Volvo India has been pushing to cut down on ICE offerings for some time. During the Covid years, the carmaker updated its entire lineup by offering hybrid powertrain across all models sold in the country. Volvo recently discontinued one of its ICE model XC40. Besides the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, Volvo also sells XC60 and XC90 SUVs as well as S90 sedan.

Kamal Bali, President and Managing Director at Volvo Group in India, said that the carmaker plans to achieve carbon-neutral by 2040. “At Volvo, we have set target that by 2030, 50 per cent of our vehicles will be non-fossil fuel-based. They will be non-polluting. Balance 50 per cent will become non-zero emission by 2040,” Bali said during an event on Thursday.

Between January and September this year, the Swedish auto giant has registered 40 per cent growth in sales by delivering 1,751 units. Bulk of the carmaker’s sales in India came from Volvo XC60 SUV which contributed to 35 per cent of the total volume. It is powered by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, petrol engine which is mated to a 48V mild-hybrid system as standard.

Though ICE models still contribute largely to Volvo’s sales in India, the two EV offerings have also started to make their impact. Jyoti Malhotra, Managing Director at Volvo Car India, had said, “It has been a remarkable three quarters with an encouraging 40% sales growth from January to September 2023 as compared to last year, driven by the XC60 and our Pure Electric offerings XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge.”

F1: Max Verstappen wins inaugural Las Vegas GP concluding a chaotic weekend

F1: Max Verstappen wins inaugural Las Vegas GP concluding a chaotic weekend

He changed his tune — literally — following his 18th win of the season.

“Viva Las Vegas! Viva Las Vegas!” sang Verstappen as he crossed under the checkered flag waved by Justin Bieber. Verstappen had slammed Saturday night’s spectacle at every chance, yet raced in an Elvis-inspired firesuit and took the victory on the famed Las Vegas Strip.

“I hope everyone enjoyed it, we definitely did. Excited to come back here next year and try to do something similar,” said Verstappen, who had markedly reversed his weeklong position on the Las Vegas spectacle.

“It was a fun race. I enjoyed it,” he conceded.

Verstappen passed Charles Leclerc at the start then overcame a penalty to pass Leclerc once more with 13 laps remaining to continue his season-long dominance. Verstappen, Leclerc and Sergio Perez were driven in a limousine to a stage located near the Bellagio — “we go straight to the nightclub,” Verstappen told his fellow podium finishers — but they were instead treated to the casino’s famed fountain show.

The Bellagio fountains had been turned off all week and restarted as part of the victory celebration. None of the participants seemed remotely interested as they stood chatting. After receiving their trophies, they were treated to a New Year’s Eve-style fireworks show over the Strip.

Martin Garrix then launched into a throbbing DJ set to entertain those who opened their wallets for the most expensive spectator race of the season. Celebrities danced along on the grid and everyone seemed thrilled with the show. The stars in attendance included Brad Pitt, Rihanna, Usain Bolt and Shaquille O’Neal as F1 said it drew more than 315,000 spectators over the weekend and estimated an economic impact of $1.2 billion to Las Vegas.

“I really enjoyed it and I am especially happy that we finished the weekend on a high note because it was hurting me to see the sport that I love so much starting so wrong on Thursday,” said Leclerc. “The fact that we had an amazing race makes it all better.”

The race was the third stop this season in the United States, more than any other country, and was promoted by F1 and owner Liberty Media. But the event has been lambasted — especially by Verstappen — for its emphasis on becoming a neon extravaganza.

Tickets were expensive, hotels along the famed Strip hiked their prices, and the sporting element of the 21st race of the season was overshadowed by everything from celebrities, musical acts and a myriad of Elvis impersonators roaming the paddock that included a wedding chapel where former F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve was married earlier in the week.

Liberty expected to spend $500 million on the first grand prix it self-promoted, but paddock speculation before Saturday night’s race was that Liberty had gone well over budget. The entire event nearly imploded nine minutes into the first practice session on Thursday night when Carlos Sainz Jr. ran over a water drain valve cover on the track that badly damaged his Ferrari and F1 had to close the 3.85-mile (6.2-kilometer) circuit for inspection.

Fans were forced to leave at 1:30 a.m. Friday morning after witnessing just nine minutes of track activity. The second practice started at 2:30 a.m. and ran until 4 a.m., and instead of an apology, F1 simply offered $200 credits to the LVGP merchandise store to any ticket holders who had only purchased Thursday access. A class-action lawsuit was filed Friday against the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

It made it critical for F1 to deliver a good race Saturday night and, even though it was Verstappen’s sixth consecutive victory, it was one of the most spirited events of the season. Additionally, a track that had been likened to a “flying pig” because of its layout was praised for its raciness.

Seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, who finished seventh for Mercedes, said the circuit “provided a better race than most of the tracks we go to.”

“I don’t think the music stopped this entire weekend in the paddock,” said Logan Sargeant of Williams, the only American driver in F1.

Leclerc and teammate Sainz had qualified 1-2 on Friday but Sainz was handed a 10-place penalty on the starting grid because Ferrari was forced to change his car due to the damage from hitting the drain cover. That pushed Verstappen up to second for the start and he immediately pounced.

The Dutchman forced Leclerc off track to take the lead, and although Leclerc demanded that Verstappen be forced to give the position back, Verstappen was only handed a five-second penalty. He served it during a later pit stop, but his Red Bull is so strong, he remained in contention the entire race.

Leclerc passed Perez for the lead with 17 laps remaining, and then three laps later Verstappen passed his teammate to take second. He and Perez then worked to create a tow that allowed Verstappen to catch Leclerc for the win with 13 laps remaining.

Perez had worked his way past Leclerc for second but Leclerc grabbed it back at the finish to deny Red Bull its seventh 1-2 finish of the season.

“I wanted that win so bad,” Leclerc said. “I enjoyed it so much. Second place with a lot of fights. There is no better race for the first race in Vegas.”

With Hamilton finishing seventh, Perez locked up second to Verstappen in the season driver standings.

The Leclerc finish helped Ferrari cut its deficit to Mercedes to four points for second in the constructor championship heading into next week’s finale at Abu Dhabi.

Lando Norris of McLaren was involved in an early accident and taken to a local hospital for precautionary reasons. He was released shortly after the fireworks show.

She was also gifted a BMW 3 Series by cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, the India brand ambassador of the German automaker at the time, for her stellar performance in the 2012 London Olympics. Hyundai Motor India also presented the sports star with the Creta First Anniversary Edition in 2016 for her win in the Australian Open Championship.

On the work front, Saina is now working to make a comeback to badminton on the international stage after a brief hiatus due to a knee injury.

The side profile will now come with more muscle and creases. At the rear, the new Duster will come with new Y-shaped light clusters and a sloping rear window with a spoiler.

Made-in-India Honda Elevate unveiled in Japan as the new-generation WR-V

Honda has unveiled the new-generation WR-V SUV for the Japanese market and the all-new offering is none other than the Elevate sold in India. The Honda Elevate made its global debut in India earlier this year and the compact SUV is being manufactured and exported from the automaker’s Tapukara plant in Rajasthan to its home market. Interestingly, the WR-V was also a nameplate used by Honda Car India for its Jazz-based crossover, which was discontinued earlier this year.

The new Honda WR-V for Japan is the made-in-India Elevate exported from the automaker’s Tapukara facility

Honda says the WR-V name stands for “Winsome Runabout Vehicle” and winsome stands for “fun” and “cheerfulness.” The company says the new SUV has been developed keeping the versatile lifestyles of customers. While both versions look visually identical, there are plenty of changes on the Japanese model to take note of on the Japanese model.

The leather accents on the dashboard have been skipped as well. Honda Japan is also offering five monotone shades as against seven monotone and three dual-tone shades on the Indian version.

On the feature front, the JDM-spec model gets a different touchscreen infotainment system with buttons on the right, instead of the 10-inch infotainment unit seen here. The unit does come Honda remote control that allows you to remotely access certain functions on the car. It also gets Honda ALSOK rush service for theft and mischief, navigation, and in-car Wi-Fi. However, it misses out on features like an electric sunroof and wireless charging, which are otherwise available in the Indian model.

Ninth-generation Toyota Camry breaks cover, becomes pure hybrid

Ninth-generation Toyota Camry breaks cover, becomes pure hybrid

Toyota Camry is one of the cars that have been in business for a long time, since March 1982. Now, the Japanese car manufacturer has taken the wrap off the new generation Camry, which comes as a pure hybrid car. This means the ninth generation Toyota Camry will come with a 2.5-litre inline-four engine paired with two compact electric motors, increasing the range for the midsize sedan as well as minimising its tailpipe emission. What’s more interesting is that being a pure hybrid car, the new generation Camry has essentially turned into a bigger Toyota Prius.

By: Mainak Das
| Updated on: 15 Nov 2023, 11:49 AM

The new Toyota Camry gets a 2.5-litre inline-four engine with two electric motors, churning out a power output between 222 bhp and 229 bhp.

The ninth-generation Camry comes as a heavy refreshed iteration instead of an all-new car. It rides on the same TNGA-K architecture that underpins the eighth-generation model. However, the updated model comes with a reworked suspension with new shocks and revised tuning, which ensure better riding comfort for the occupants. Toyota claims the car offers enhanced responsiveness and agile handling.

On the design front, it looks similar to the predecessor, with a large lower front grille and slim LED headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights. The taillights too come with LED treatment. The new Camry gets a wide range of colour options including Ice Cap, Wind Chill Pearl, Celestial Silver Metallic, Underground, Midnight Black Metallic, Supersonic Red, Reservoir Blue, Ocean Gem and Heavy Metal. The last two paint options come as a new addition to the list. The sedan runs on 19-inch wheels.

Moving inside the cabin, the new Camry comes with a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment screen. The top trims get 12.3-inch displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment system. The infotainment system gets wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, in addition to having a wireless charging pad. The top-end trim gets a 10.0-inch heads-up display. There’s also a nine-speaker JBL audio system inside the cabin.

On the safety front, the new Camry gets Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite, which includes a pre-collision system that detects vehicles and pedestrians, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure assist, road sign assist, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The top trims offer an optional Premium Plus Package that adds traffic-jam assist, front cross-traffic alert, lane-change assist, panoramic view monitor, and front and rear parking assist with automatic braking.

On the powertrain front, the new Camry gets a 2.5-litre inline-four engine with two electric motors, churning out a combined output of 222 bhp peak power with front-wheel drive or 229 bhp maximum power with all-wheel drive.

Toyota Camry is not a big seller in India as it once was for the automaker but it retails around 150-200 units every month, which makes it a familiar model in the country. With the growing demand for hybrid models, the new Camry could find a better success rate in India, if Toyota brings it here.

The new Ferrari 296 GTB pays homage to the iconic Ferrari Dino sports car that was introduced in the 1960s. The Ferrari 296 GTB draws power from the 2,996 cc (ergo 260 moniker) twin-turbo V6 engine that’s paired with an electric motor. The petrol hybrid engine is tuned to produce a combined output of 807 bhp and 741 Nm. The power figures are enough to get the supercar from 0-100 kmph in 2.9 seconds with a top speed of 330 kmph. The 296 GTB can run on electric power alone with a 7.45 kWh underfloor battery that has a range of 42 km and at speeds up to 135 kmph.

BMW 7 Series to get Level 3 autonomous driving technology

BMW 7 Series to get Level 3 autonomous driving technology

BMW 7 Series sedan is all set to receive the Level 3 autonomous driving technology. The German luxury has revealed that the 7 Series flagship sedan will receive the BMW Personal Pilot L3 system from next year, which is essentially a hands-free driver assistance technology. The L3 autonomous driving technology is capable of controlling the car at speeds up to 60 kmph. Also, the addition of this new technology increases the price of the car significantly.

By: HT Auto Desk
| Updated on: 12 Nov 2023, 09:55 AM

The BMW Personal Pilot L3 works with the help of a host of sensors and cameras and the hardware makes the 7 Series’ kidney-shaped grille more cluttered.

BMW has revealed that the 7 Series and i7 models will receive this advanced autonomous driving technology in Germany initially. However, it is not sure when the India-spec model will receive this feature.BMW will offer this hands-free driving technology as an option to the customers of the 7 Series and i7. This technology works with the help of multiple sensors and cameras that are fitted to the front of the car. BMW claims that the technology can work in broad daylight as well as in the dark.

Watch: BMW i7 electric sedan: Luxury on wheels

The current generation BMW 7 Series is already a more opulent and tech-friendly sedan than before. The addition of the Personal Pilot L3 will further enhance the capabilities of the car. The i7 comes as the all-electric alternative to the 7 Series and takes on the Mercedes-Benz EQS. BMW India launched both the 7 Series and the i7 in the country earlier this year in January.

While the BMW Personal Pilot L3 would essentially make driving easier for the 7 Series and i7 drivers, the technology doesn’t help the luxury cars’ design. To get this technology, both the BMW 7 Series and i7 get ultrasound sensors, radar and 3D lidar. Some of the hardware required for this technology is fitted into the upper part of the massive kidney grilles. There are now inset trapezoidal areas with rectangular sensors positioned on each side of the grille, which add some extra clutter to the grille. The addition of these sensors makes it look like small kidney-shaped parts are on top of larger kidney grilles.

Volvo XC40 petrol SUV discontinued in India

Volvo XC40 petrol SUV discontinued in India

Volvo Auto has pulled the plug on the XC40 compact luxury SUV in India with the model now delisted from the company’s website. The move though isn’t surprising since the automaker already brought its all-electric sibling in the form of the XC40 Recharge, which has been garnering a stronger response. The XC40 mild-hybrid petrol was available in the single, fully-loaded B4 Ultimate trim, priced at 46.40 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

The Volvo XC40 mild-hybrid petrol has been discontinued with the all-electric XC40 Recharge now positioned as the brand’s most accessible offering

While the petrol-powered XC40 was Volvo’s most accessible offering in the country, that mantle is now taken up by the XC40 Recharge priced from 56.90 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards. This leaves the larger Volvo XC60, S90 and XC90 as the only ICE-powered offerings in the company’s lineup.

Volvo C40 Recharge
Volvo’s entry-level offerings in India are now all-electric with the XC40 Recharge SUV and C40 Recharge coupe priced at 56.90 lakh and 62.95 lakh (ex-showroom) respectively

The move to focus on electric offerings is in line with Volvo’s plans to go all-electric in the coming years. The company will phase out petrol cars globally, replacing them with electric models. This is in line with the brand’s global electrification target of 2030. The automaker launched the C40 Recharge earlier this year in India and said that it hopes to convert half of its sales to EVs by 2025.

The Volvo XC40 Recharge already accounts for about 27 per cent of the automaker’s total sales in India. The electric SUV draws power from two electric motors tuned for 402 bhp and 660 Nm with 0-100 kmph coming up in 4.9 seconds. Meanwhile, the ICE XC40 used a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system tuned for 197 bhp and 300 Nm, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The e-SUV gets a 79 kWh battery pack that offers a claimed range of 418 km on a single charge. The battery can be recharged from 10-80 per cent in 28 minutes using a fast charger.
