In this edition of Un-Popular Weekend Destinations (from Delhi), I got stuck in dunes near Jaipur and traversed some narrow streets of Mandawa in the Jimny.

A Solitary Escape In The Timeless Sands

With the Good Friday long weekend approaching, I had my eyes set on exploring some dunes and sandy trails of Rajasthan. A quick search for dunes led me to finalising Kalpana Nagar dunes as my destination for this adventure. It’s one thing to drive through sand pits deep enough to get even a burly SUV stuck at an off-road track. It’s another to drive through endless sands where you could not only get stuck, but also get lost.

But, I wanted some privacy. Privacy to explore my limits. Privacy to get stuck and not have someone remind me that I’m a newbie. After all, I was looking for places to get stuck. Because how you get out of it is what matters. That’s how you gain experience.

I spent a few hours there playing around with the various combinations of 2H, 4H, 4L and electronic off-road settings. I wanted to learn how to get rolling when I dug my wheels in too deep. After playing around with the Jimny, it was time to head back home. Time well spent!

Change Of Plans

When I was done, I noticed that I had several missed calls from Piyush, who was in Mandawa at that time and I called him back to apologise. But I had a damn good excuse!

He insisted I visit him, and knowing that I had a 4X4, recommended I take a detour wherever possible to absorb more of the local vibe. I think he just wanted me to get lost in the vast desert or get stuck in some narrow passages with a dead end and no way to reverse out of.

Along the highways, and via Sikar, the drive to Mandawa from the other side of Jaipur is almost 200km and about 180km from my hotel in Jaipur. “Do hell with it. Let’s see what the Jimny can do.” — I thought to myself and promised to meet Piyush the next day.

To make sure I don’t turn my back on him, through his connections, he allowed me access to a privately-owned forest reserve near Jaipur. Before wrapping up my day, I spent a few hours in the reserve where I saw deers and nilgai. When I had dunes on my mind, forests were nowhere near my plans. Yet, I ended up playing in the sands and meditating in a mini forest, all in a matter of a few hours.

Tales Of Trails

The next morning, I started my drive from Jaipur to Mandawa a little early. I took a few detours and picked lines that look like they’re barely a pixel wide on Google Maps. Till dusk, I held my horses and decided that I shouldn’t stray too far from the wider roads. I didn’t want to disturb the locals with bright lights and leave them covered in dust. But once it got sunny, I had greater visibility and I could better evaluate the risks when going off the road.

I engaged in enough trail hunting to lose my way. In the desolated regions of Rajasthan, not only did I lose the data and cellular connection, even the GPS started acting up. With intermittent GPS disconnections and poor accuracy, if I wanted to reach Mandawa the same day, I had to do some old school navigation. For the Gen Z, that means performing the tough task of getting out of the vehicle and asking people for directions. In person, no less.

Via Kamalsar, I finally reached Mandawa. I should have been drained by this time but the caffeine flowing through my system kept me energised and awake at the wheel.

Now that I have had time to think it over, I guess it was probably the itch to gradually keep moving towards the Jimny’s limits and keep pushing my own in the process that kept me going. I think it was adrenaline, but I’ll let caffeine take the credit for this one.

A Needle Does What A Hammer Can’t

Driving through Mandawa, once again, had me thanking my stars that I had the Jimny. Its narrow body granted me the freedom to drive through the open air art gallery. As fun as it would have been to walk through it all, after so much driving in the last 2 days and a lot of physical and mental exertion, having the option of bringing the car with me felt like a blessing.

We met at the Mandawa Castle, which, back in the day, used to be the accommodation for the royals. Now, a good part of it is turned into a hotel. So, it’s a nice way to experience the royal life and get a feel for travelling back in time – some 250 years or so.

Loyalty Amidst Royalty

After a lavish lunch, Piyush took the keys and we started moving again. He said something about experiencing ‘horsepower’. “Petrol engines are known for horsepower and I have been experiencing horsepower for the better part of the past day and a half. How else might I experience horsepower?”, I thought to myself. Through some trails, we arrived at the Mandawa Safaris stud farm, which is owned by one of his acquaintances.

There, I got up close with true bred Marwari horses. These are said to be part of Chetak’s bloodline. For those who barely stayed awake in the History class, Chetak was the legendary steed of Maharana Pratap. He trusted Chetak with his life when he led his army into the battles during the late 1500s. And the horses paid for that trust and love with an unmatched loyalty.

I can say with pride that I have had the honour of riding some of these horses, though not galloping at their full strength. Having that much power at your command and keeping it under control at the same time takes a lot of training and practice. I certainly didn’t possess either of those but a short trot did feel like I was starting to get in the rhythm with these magnificent beings.

By the way, if you have a long weekend to experience a royal lifestyle, horseback riding in the timeless sands of Rajasthan and dune bashing, then you don’t need to go through Jaipur like I did. You can skip the Pink City, which gets even more crowded on long weekends and head straight to Mandawa.

The drive is considerably shorter than Delhi-Jaipur but it’ll take about the same time to reach this un-popular weekend destination from Delhi. You don’t even need to bring your own 4X4. They have their own collection of ATVs and off-roaders.

A Memorable Experience

After a good long sleep, I started my journey back home. Driving along the highways to Delhi, I had a sense of satisfaction that the Jimny afforded me. If I had something bigger, I would have had to leave it at the gates of Mandawa and explore the art on foot. If I had something without 4WD, I wouldn’t have had so much fun playing around the sand dunes.

Since Piyush has a lot of experience driving around in the sands of Rajasthan, I engaged him in a conversation about the car we were driving. While we were discussing 4WD vehicles, we also discussed the importance of having a heavy vehicle. You see, when a vehicle gets stuck, putting extra weight on it, helps it find grip where we have none and get out of a sticky situation. This led me to believe that a heavy vehicle should be ideal to traverse the sands of Thar desert.

Then he dropped on me a profound piece of nugget, which I’ll never forget. He asked me:

 

Do you want to ride on the sand or in the sand?

There was no back and forth between us on the topic after that. But there was a lot of pondering to do on this subject on my way back. I used the peace and quiet while driving on the highways to think of situations where extra weight would be helpful in the sands. I couldn’t come up with any. Could you?

Travelogue: Tripping With The XL6 – The Jack Of All Trades, Master Of Some

These past two years have been tough on mankind. With the small trips becoming the new resolutions, something as small as a road trip felt like the best source of exhilaration. When I was given an opportunity to travel with the XL6, the first picture that came to mind was of lush green mountains, natural waterfalls, and winding roads. With those tempting thoughts, I planned the route and the places to visit. Filled the Maruti Suzuki XL6 to the brim, checked the tyre pressure, and off we went to Dehradun!

Completely unaware of the sublime Delhi-Meerut expressway, we trusted Google Maps which rerouted us to the older way of reaching Dehradun. Starting from Gurugram, the first scenic location was the Signature Bridge near Ghaziabad. Covered with fog and low-slung clouds, it’s known to be the tallest viewpoint in Delhi. After clicking a few pictures, we continued on the journey to reach Muzaffarnagar. Google Maps suggested we take some country roads. However, it was a rather intriguing route, with loads of traffic and tractors loaded with sugarcane. That’s when I came to realise the fact that Uttar Pradesh is indeed the largest producer of sugarcane crops.

The sight of sugarcane triggered cravings for carbs in me. So, I stopped by a stall for some garam samosas. We loaded up and carried on with the trip and to our surprise, we weren’t the only ones traveling to Dehradun on Christmas. On our way, we saw several cars with UP14, HR26, HR38 and DL09 plates. The samosas warmed us up really well. So, we grabbed some cold drinks and the front cup holders, which get air-con circulation, kept them cool while we sipped it intermittently. Another nifty feature of the XL6 was auto headlamps. When entering the tunnels, the headlights turned on before I could reach for the stalks and turned off automatically as we exited.

The route we were on was throwing occasional rough patches, beaten roads of villages, large flocks, and whatnot. But the supple ride quality of the XL6 kept the occupants unaware of how poorly I was negotiating bad roads. To some extent, the rather small 15-inch wheels witih taller sidewalls also helped with the comfort. The benefits of the XL6 became more apparent when the going got more treacherous.

As we reached Dehradun after a long journey, the roads became narrower. On day 1, our goal was to reach Dhanaulti and enjoy the mesmerising scenic views. We got there eventually but after a lot of hassles. I blame Google Maps again for suggesting us the longer and more treacherous route. The roads were broken and we didn’t witness a single piece of tarmac. Multiple landslides along the way had made the roads miserable. But to our surprise, the XL6 didn’t break a sweat. The 1.5L hybrid petrol engine, coupled with short gearing offered good torque at the wheels even at low-ish RPMs.

The motor of the XL6 is very tractable, and I wasn’t hunting for gears every now and then. Even in the city for that matter, it could drive in 3rd gear from as low as 20kmph. In most of the instances, I forgot that I was in 3rd gear throughout the traffic. That single character of the XL6 makes it a great hauler in the city.

After covering a good 25-30 km on the way, we ventured back to the base as the roads ahead were only meant for 4x4s. After having the famous Maggi of mountains, we found a hotel to snooze a bit before heading to Mussoorie the next morning. Unlike Dhanaulti, the roads leading to Mussoorie are really good – long switchbacks and banked twisties. While constantly working the steering wheel, I started to appreciate the light steering wheel of the XL6. Had it been any other SUV, I would have faced severe pain in my forearms and shoulders for sure.

The roads of Mussoorie had barely any traffic when we arrived early in the morning. Once we reached the top, it started getting crowded and the roads kept getting narrower. Hence, we decided not to go to the rather famous Mall road. We found a scenic private property down the hills, which had Alpine trees and a small pond.

We clicked a good bunch of photos and started our journey back to Gurugram, and this time, Google Maps recommended the Delhi-Meerut expressway. The new expressway is really smooth and has wide lanes. On our way back, we witnessed some drizzling throughout. So, we didn’t push the car and kept well below the speed limit to stay on the safe side.

Once we arrived back home, I thought of calculating the expenses after tanking up the cheaper Gurugram diesel. During our 800km weekend getaway, we covered a good mix of highways, city roads, treacherous mountain roads and twisty turns with steep climbs and descents. With 4 occupants and a weekend’s worth of luggage, our petrol XL6 delivered 17.7kmpl. The short gearing in the XL6, that is its USP in the city, takes a toll on the highways. Hence, if you want to get good FE, then you should keep the engine around 2000rpm. In the top gear, you can cruise at around 80kmph with the tacho needle hovering just a shade over 2000.

Our trip to Dehradun and Mussoorie was full of scenic views, great roads, and good food. And honestly, we couldn’t have asked for a better companion to deal with the ‘off’ road patches we ran into during the trip. It’s supremely comfortable and spacious, frugal and reliable. Till now, I never understood why the XL6 existed when we have the affordable and more practical Ertiga. But the XL6 turned out to be a better family car with a premium experience and captain seats for all occupants. If you want a good looking family mover and have reliability and comfort and fuel efficiency high on your priority list, then look no further than the Maruti Suzuki Nexa XL6.

Audi Q7 On A Family Comfort Test – Long Drive Delhi-Uttarakhand

I believe the mountains do not call everyone. Some visit them out of compulsion. I have my reasons to go to the highlands of Uttarakhand; my wife has her extended family there. Unfortunately, she’s not fond of long drives, and particularly dislikes the twisty mountain roads. Yes. Such people, even with their origins in the hills, do exist. We also had our daughter along for the ride. She neither minds the twists nor the smooth highways as long as she has some source of entertainment and her ‘papa’ and ‘mommy’ by her side.

Monday being a Holi-day, we had our long weekend planned with the extended family in Mussoorie, and I had the task of driving my people up the mountains without any complaints.

Almost a year back, the V3Cars Team drove the Audi Q7 from Mumbai to Delhi via the Statue of Unity in Gujarat. The car left us impressed with its comfortable seats, superbly insulated cabin and the powerful 3.0L turbo petrol engine. There are very few cars that my wife approves of when it comes to comfort, and I knew the Q7 would get her approval.

“Are you sure we have the right car for this drive?” asked the wife, and added, “It’s going to take us more than 6 hours to reach, and it’s a long weekend for everyone else too. We need something comfortable when we are stuck in traffic.” The Q7 is plenty capable in this aspect.

We usually pack more than what is required. While it was just the three of us, we had two large bags, a laptop bag and a tote bag with some essentials for the weekend. The Q7 is a three-row car, and with the third row completely folded, the space was more than adequate. We always tell our daughter to help us with our chores. She played her part by pressing the button to lower the Q7 to help us stuff the boot!

And off we went, leaving early in the morning so that we could beat the rush. We started from Gurgaon and passed through Delhi, Ghaziabad, Meerut and Muzaffarnagar to reach Dehradun via Haridwar so that we could avoid the twisty roads. The Q7 is a mile muncher of the highest order — the front seats are particularly well-cushioned and accommodating.

Our daughter found her sweet spot in the rear bench with the Q7’s entertainment system playing her favourite content on YouTube. I liked her using it more than the iPad – this way the screen is farther and she could sit more comfortably with a lower risk of neck pain.

The Q7 is a large 5m car and it feels like it’s taking up more than just a lane on the highways. But, its 3.0L 340PS engine makes sure you can move from one cluster of slow-moving cars to the next pretty quickly. Before I even had a chance to have some fun with the acceleration, we were in the twisties leading up to Mussoorie.

Hill stations these days are heavily commercialised, but we reached before the narrow uphill roads got congested. Nevertheless, our average speed for the entire trip was around 40kmph only, such was the traffic.

While I didn’t get my chance to floor the pedal and enjoy quick acceleration, I got more than enough time to truly connect with the Q7. The Mumbai-Delhi drive was mostly on wide, flat highways where we have little opportunity to get a good sense of the Q7’s handling. Climbing up the hills, steering out one curve into the other suddenly made the car feel far more compact than it is. I never expected a car as large as the Q7 to feel so nimble.

With the car’s responsive handling, my natural tendency led me to push it a little further. Thankfully, neither the wife nor the daughter felt enough discomfort to even notice that we were keeping a good pace. Until then, I did not know if the Q7 would pass my wife’s comfort test, but I was heavily impressed with the fact that I could enjoy my mountain drive while the occupants experienced barely any inconvenience.

And so, we reached Mussoorie. Without any complaints from anyone this time around.

“Are we here already?”, asked my wife. This was probably the first time ever that she felt that the drive ended earlier than expected. I immediately knew that the Q7 had passed the test with flying colours. As I parked the car, I felt relieved as my choice got my family to Mussoorie in utmost comfort. I’m also thankful to the wonderful team at Audi India for arranging the Q7 on such a short notice.

Honda City Facelift Petrol – Exterior Review

In terms of dimensions, there is not much difference between the pre-facelift and facelift versions of the City. However, in the 2023 model’s ZX variant, the front and rear bumpers are significantly restyled, making it slightly longer than the older City.

Headlamps

The front bumper has a carbon fibre-type trim on its lip, and the fog lamp housing also gets minor styling changes. Due to the criss-cross pattern of the lower grille, the chequered flag-type upper grille and the sharp bumper design, the face of the car looks sportier. The City now also comes with auto wipers, which were not available before.

City Side Exterior

There is only one change on the side of the car – the design of the alloy wheels. These look sporty from certain angles, but the City still looks under-tyred. It deserves wider tyres to match the car’s size and length, if not bigger alloy wheels.

City Rear Exterior

The changes around the rear are as subtle as those at the front, but somehow the styling of its rear diffusers is more striking. These also get carbon fibre detailing, like at the front, which makes the car look sporty. The car also has a rear spoiler on its boot lid, which complements its design.

The boot space of the City remains the same as before, so it is 506L for the petrol version and 306L for the hybrid.

2023 Honda City Petrol – Interior Review

City Interior

Moving inside the cabin, there are not many changes here either. You still get the dual-tone beige-black interior with glossy wooden accents in the petrol model and ivory cabin with glossy carbon-fibre trim in hybrid variants. The design of the dashboard and interior space remains the same. The cabin now also has a wireless phone charger just ahead of the front armrest in the hybrid version. In the petrol version, it is a removable accessory, which draws power from the front 12V power outlet.

2023 Honda City Petrol and Hybrid – Engine Performance And Drive Review

The City still comes with a 1.5L petrol engine, which produces a maximum power of 121PS and peak torque of 145Nm. The power output of the City hybrid is 126PS and peak torque is 253Nm. Both powertrains were also present in the pre-facelift City with the same performance figures.

Mahindra — 4/8 SUVs With 4WD (50% Coverage)

Mahindra have the largest number of 4WD cars in their portfolio and Jeep are the only mass market carmaker matching them in this regard. And if you factor in the Scorpio Classic and the Bolero, both of which earlier had a 4WD option, then the count goes up to 6 vehicles for a 75% coverage.

They are cashing in on this SUV craze with the largest number of SUVs on offer. The Thar perfectly sets the stage for the rest of their SUVs to borrow the rugged, go-anywhere personality. Then, having an option of 4WD in 4 of their vehicles makes it worth a look for buyers who absolutely need that capability.

Maruti Suzuki — 2/7 SUVs With 4WD (29% Coverage)

Maruti Suzuki are the next in line with 7 SUVs. The Jimny is their halo off-roader but even the Grand Vitara has the option of 4WD with a manual transmission. We’re pretty confident that it is a made-to-order kind of a variant with very limited production because of the scarce demand. But, having that option in the variant lineup helps the Vitara earn that SUV tag. This further spills into their lineup and it’s supposed to help them sell more vehicles with this SUV styling.

While you may laugh at someone expecting 4WD capabilities from a small car like the Ignis, it’s worth noting the Ignis does get the 4WD option in some international markets. So, it has more of those SUV genes in it than other mini SUVs like the Punch, Exter and the now-discontinued KUV100.

Now, Kia are a tricky one. They have 2 SUVs and 1 electric car in the portfolio with 4WD but it’s not an SUV. Their halo product, the imported EV6 electric, has rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options. So, I’d say, they’re still doing much better than the carmakers selling SUVs without showing any expertise with 4WD in India.

I’m merging Skoda and Volkswagen into one heading as they’re not only part of the same VW Group of companies, but also because their scores are identical. They both have 2 SUVs in their Indian lineup — one for the mass market buyers and one for an elite group of buyers, who,  might I add, are an extremely sensible bunch.

This group of buyers sees VW and Skoda’s expensive cars from a different angle. They’re like affordable luxury cars without the premium badge on the nose and an accompanying inflated price tag. From their angle, they aren’t buying expensive cars from mass market brands but luxury cars without the baggage tagging along.

With that little off-topic nugget, let’s come back to the question at hand. They both have one 4WD SUV in their portfolio and one without. That’s a good 4WD coverage considering that they only have 2 SUVs each in India. The presence of the more expensive, larger SUV here lends the smaller one some of that SUV vibe.

Brands WIthout 4WD in Portfolio

Among car manufacturers that don’t have 4WD in any of their vehicles, we have Citroen (4 SUVs), Renault (2 SUVs) and Honda, Nissan, BYD with 1 SUV each.

Here, Citroen have the highest number of SUVs but no 4WD option. However, considering their limited reach in the country (in terms of sales and service outlets) and their age in the Indian market, it’s easy to digest the lack of 4WD cars. The rest of the brands have too few SUVs in their portfolio and not enough volumes to justify having a 4WD in the portfolio.

With that assumption, Tata Motors end up with a staggering 6 SUVs in their portfolio. NONE of these SUVs have the option of 4WD. They are also preparing the Curvv or Frest for launch in the near future. This is an SUV based on the Nexon’s platform and it’ll compete with the Creta, Seltos, Grand Vitara and other SUVs from the C-segment. Since the Nexon itself only has a front-wheel drive powertrain option, it’s safe to assume that the Curvv/Frest will also support only a front-wheel drivetrain with a petrol/diesel engine.

Thus, soon, they will have 7 SUVs in their portfolio and none of them will have the 4WD or AWD option. This is a startling fact about a major SUV manufacturer in India as they don’t have the 4WD in the portfolio to demonstrate their capabilities. It puts me in a difficult position when I have to refer to their products as SUVs, when literally all of them are nothing more than glorified, oversized hatchbacks.

They don’t have a halo product in the lineup with 4WD to lend the SUV vibe to the rest of their crossovers. While I don’t expect them to have a 100% coverage for 4WD like Jeep (all vehicles have 4WD option), at least having one is not an unreasonable expectation. It becomes even more difficult to digest when you look at Skoda, Volkswagen and Kia. All of these 3 carmakers have at least 1 vehicle with 4WD in their Indian portfolio even though they only have 2 SUVs in their portfolio.

One of them is about reclaiming your life. With a 4-wheel drive, you probably could do things they didn’t even show in the video. The first ad encourages you to go outdoors and get dirty.

The other one is about indulging in luxuries…which is good too but on a different plane — and — when the features work as intended. Even if they do, the ad feels like it’s pushing you towards laziness as they demonstrate the ability to open the tailgate without using your hands. Now, I wouldn’t mind this with the Harrier, which doesn’t have a reputation to live up to. But in the Safari ad, with the tagline “Reclaim your life”, it feels totally out of sync.

While the old ad only teases a small part of what the car is capable of, the new one pretty much sums up its capabilities. Even in the real world, the Safari is not capable of doing anything the Kia Sonet diesel can’t. In fact, the Sonet diesel does a few things better than the Safari while costing several lakhs less. Once you go into deeper analysis, you’ll find out that the Sonet offers more features. Moreover, the features in Kia cars have a much higher probability that they will work as intended during the ownership.

The Brezza has the most powerful naturally aspirated petrol engine amongst its competitors. It is also more powerful than the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger’s turbo petrol engine. Most of the Brezza’s competitors offer a turbo-petrol engine and a diesel engine. The Brezza however, does not get either.

Maruti Brezza City Highway Mileage – Petrol Manual & Auto

Maruti claim a fuel efficiency figure of 20.15kmpl for the Brezza manual and 19.80kmpl for the Brezza automatic transmission. During our relaxed city drive in the new Brezza with the manual transmission, the SUV delivered an indicative fuel efficiency of more than 17kmpl. Given that the automatic transmission has an additional gear, which will let the engine cruise at a lower RPM, we think the automatic transmission will be more fuel efficient on highway drives.

Maruti Brezza – Performance

The Brezza does not feel low on power. When we drove the Brezza with the 5-speed manual transmission, we found the clutch was light. The gear shifts were also smooth. The car can manage even at relatively higher gears. As the engine is naturally aspirated, the power delivery is linear. Hence, there is no power loss even at low RPMs. The car picks up linearly throughout the rev range.

When we drove the manual Brezza on the highway, we felt that the car deserved a 6-speed manual transmission. While cruising at 100kmph, the engine was revving at 3000rpm. At such speeds, the engine felt strained, as if it had no power in reserve. Hence, picking up pace without downshifting could take a lot of time. Let us point out that the NVH levels were low even at 3000rpm.

On the other hand, the Brezza with the 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission was cruising at 2000rpm at 100kmph. Hence, it felt comparatively relaxed while driving. The gear shifts of this transmission are smooth. While there are no drive modes on offer, one can shift gears manually by using paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.

The new Brezza feels comfortable over most of the inconsistencies of the road. It also felt confident while maintaining a straight line on highways. The steering wheel feels light, which makes manoeuvring in city traffic very easy. The braking of the Brezza is good for the performance it offers. However, more initial bite would have made decelerating more confident.

Overall, the new engine of the Brezza is inherently refined in nature. The added gears in the automatic transmission have improved the high-speed cruising ability of the car. So, if you drive on highways frequently, you could opt for the automatic transmission over the manual without compromising fuel efficiency. We did miss the 6th gear in the manual transmission, which would have significantly aided the cruising ability of the car. However, even without it, we have nothing to complain about the dynamics of the car.

Considering that Tata Motors usually offer CNG in their lower-mid all the way to top variants, we should see the CNG option available in Pure and higher trims.

Nexon CNG Expected Price Logic

Tata Motors have the upper hand in offering a CNG-bifuel option in the B2-segment along with a usable boot space. The Nexon CNG will also become the only turbo petrol car in India with CNG bi-fuel option. Since the other carmakers don’t have a turbo CNG engine, the Nexon CNG should offer remarkable drivability even after experiencing some drop in performance.

Still, we expect them to follow the industry standards and maintain the status quo. While they will become the only one to offer CNG and a usable boot with a turbo petrol engine, they don’t have a strong grip in the CNG market. Thus, we expect them to follow the norm of charging Rs. 95,000 for the lower running costs of CNG cars. Limiting the reach of the CNG powertrain to Pure and higher variants will also help Tata position the Nexon CNG as a premium alternative.

Thus, we expect the Nexon CNG to come with the manual transmission and cost between Rs. 10.75 lakh and Rs. 14.55 lakh.

Ingress and egress in the Brezza is unchanged, and is not a complex task. The floorboard, roof and seats are placed at an appropriate height. This makes getting in and out of the Brezza easy.

Front Seats Review

Dashboard

The Brezza gets an all new interior. It is mainly all black, save for some brown trim on the dashboard along with grey detailing, which stretches till the passenger side of the centre console. The cabin is filled with hard plastics all around, which is of the same quality as the pre-facelift Brezza. The centre console is sturdy and the fitment of the glovebox is satisfactory. The glovebox is cooled and can store a bottle along with the owner’s manual.

Other storage spaces in the cabin include bottle holders in the front doors, cupholders in the centre console with some space to put keys and a small storage under the front armrest. There is also a wireless charger in front of the gear lever and a sunglass holder on the headliner.

Centre Console

There is a USB port and a 12V socket ahead of the gear lever. The controls for the auto AC sit above them. Then, there is a free-standing 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system at the top of the dashboard. It supports wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and has good touch feedback. The new Brezza gets Arkamys-tuned audio system with surround sound. It gets 3 preset sound modes and we found the audio output to be satisfactory.

The touchscreen infotainment can also be accessed via controls on the left spoke of the steering wheel. There are telephony controls behind the leather wrapped steering wheel, with cruise control buttons on the right spoke. There are also paddle shifters behind the steering wheel in the automatic variants. The instrument cluster gets an analogue speedometer and tachometer, with a small, coloured MID in the centre. You can access information on the screen via the old-school pins, which look dated.

Steering

On the right side of the dashboard, there is the engine start/stop button along with controls for the head-up display, 360-degree camera, traction control and auto engine start/stop function. The new Brezza gets a head-up display, which is similar to the ones seen in the new Baleno. It displays information such as speed, tachometer, fuel-efficiency and time. The HUD helps the driver access important data without having to look off the road.

The new Brezza also gets a 360-degree camera. It shows the 3D view of the car and its surroundings and its feed is displayed on the touchscreen. The quality of the camera feed is impressive as well. The new-Brezza also gets an electric sunroof with a sufficiently thick sunshade. The new Brezza is the first Maruti car to get a sunroof.

Sunroof

The new Brezza also gets ambient lighting on the doors and footwell area. However, it only lights up in one colour – blue. Amenities for the driver include auto dimming IRVM, tilt and telescopic steering wheel adjustment, electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs and height adjustable driver seat.

The driver seat is fairly comfortable. The view from the driver seat is clear and one can see the edges of the bonnet, making the drive more confident. While the whole cabin has a modern vibe to it with various upmarket features, there is a gripe. All the backlit switches, such as the AC controls, steering-mounted controls, etc. have an orange backlighting. This looks dated in an otherwise modern cabin.

Getting in and out of the rear seats of the Brezza is easy. The floorboard and seats are at an appropriate height, Additionally, the roof of the Brezza does not slope at the rear, which means your head will likely not collide with the roof.

Rear Seats Review

The rear seats of the Brezza have enough knee room and legroom. The rear passengers can slide their feet under the front seats, making more room for their legs. The headroom for the rear passengers is good as well. We think that 2 adults can very easily travel in the rear seats of the Brezza. The back and base of the seats are well-cushioned and comfortable but the underthigh support seems a bit lacking.

Rear AC

We wrote this review from the perspective of a 5’8” passenger sitting behind the driver of a similar height. Features for the rear seat passengers include 2 adjustable headrests, an armrest, rear AC vents, type-A and type-C USB charging points, 60:40 split rear seats and ambient lighting.

Verdict – Maruti Brezza Facelift Interior Review

Overall, the Brezza facelift looks way more modern inside than the pre-facelift model, which carried forward the same interior for more than 6 years. While the layout is completely new, material quality inside the new Brezza remains unchanged. Several new features further enhance the Brezza’s interior and make the in-cabin experience better. The Brezza has enough space for a family of 4 adults and a kid.
