Both SUVs offer three-row practicality, big batteries and plenty of technology, but the XEV 9S has the edge in range while the Tomahawk EV undercuts it on price

The MG Hector Tomahawk EV has recently been launched and its most obvious rival is the Mahindra XEV 9S. Both offer seven-seat practicality, substantial battery packs and plenty of technology, but they take slightly different approaches. The MG focuses on value and simplicity with a single battery and front-wheel-drive layout, while Mahindra offers three battery sizes and a more powerful rear-wheel-drive setup.

The Tomahawk EV uses a 69.2 kWh battery pack paired with a single front-mounted motor producing 204 hp and 310 Nm. MG claims a 517 km MIDC range, while the SUV can charge from 30 to 80 percent in around 35 minutes using a 90 kW DC charger. It is also available in both five- and seven-seat configurations, depending on the variant. The XEV 9S, meanwhile, offers considerably more flexibility. Its battery choices include 59 kWh, 70 kWh and 79 kWh units, paired with motors producing 231 hp, 245 hp and 286 hp, respectively. Torque is rated at 380Nm across the range. Claimed ARAI range stretches from 521km to 679km, with all versions using rear-wheel drive.

The price difference is actually quite interesting. The Hector Tomahawk EV starts at Rs 19.49 lakh, making it marginally cheaper than the XEV 9S, which starts at Rs 19.95 lakh. MG also offers a BaaS option from Rs 13.99 lakh, with the battery charged separately at a per-kilometre rate. The XEV 9S, on the other hand, goes considerably higher in the range, with the fully loaded 79 kWh version crossing Rs 29 lakh ex-showroom.

The dimensions are fairly close too. The Tomahawk EV measures 4,745 mm long with a 2,810 mm wheelbase, giving it the proportions of a proper family SUV rather than a stretched compact model. The XEV 9S is also built around three-row practicality and is based on Mahindra’s dedicated INGLO architecture.

Equipment is an important part of both packages. The Tomahawk EV gets features such as a 15.6-inch touchscreen, 360-degree camera, Level 2 ADAS, panoramic sunroof and a 10-speaker Infinity audio system on higher variants. The XEV 9S counters with a triple-screen cockpit, panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon audio, connected technology and an ADAS suite.

For someone who needs a seven-seat EV at the lowest possible entry price, the Tomahawk EV is difficult to ignore. It also has the advantage of a relatively straightforward range, while MG’s BaaS option substantially reduces the upfront price. The XEV 9S, however, offers considerably more choice and stronger numbers, particularly with the 70 kWh and 79 kWh versions.

For me, the XEV 9S is the more complete electric SUV on paper. The larger battery options, stronger motors, rear-wheel drive and higher maximum range give it a clear advantage if budget isn’t the only consideration. But the Hector Tomahawk EV could be the smarter buy for a family that simply wants a spacious seven-seat EV without stretching the budget too far. And at around Rs 20 lakh, having two genuinely usable three-row electric SUVs to choose from is a pretty good problem to have.
