Petrol Types in India

Petrol Types in India: The Indian auto market is going through a major fuel transition, where traditional fossil fuels have been rapidly replaced by ethanol-blended fuels. To reduce pollution and reduce dependence on crude oil imports, the government has started selling many types of petrol options in the country. Today, a total of 5 petrol options are being sold in the Indian market ranging from normal octane rating to high-performance and flex-fuel categories.

Depending on the engine of your vehicle, its capacity and your responsibility towards the environment, these fuels have been kept in different categories and their prices also vary widely. Come, let us know about all the types of petrol available in India from E20 to E85. What kind of vehicles are these for and what is their current price? Will know this also.

1. Regular Petrol (E20 – 91 Octane)

This is the most selling normal petrol in India, which is used in every common bike, scooter and car. Now this fuel is available with 20% ethanol mixture i.e. E20 standard at all the petrol pumps of the country. This petrol with 91 octane rating is the cheapest and practical option for daily city driving and eco-friendly travel. Its price in Delhi is currently ₹ 102.12/litre.

2. Premium Petrol (E20 – 95 Octane)

Indian Oil's XP95 and Hindustan Petroleum's Power Petrol come in this category. This is also based on E20 standard (20% ethanol), but its octane rating is 95. It contains special detergent additives which keep the engine valves clean. It gives excellent mileage and smooth performance for modern turbo-petrol cars and premium scooters. Its price in Delhi is currently ₹ 109.24/litre.

3. Super-Premium Petrol (0% Ethanol – 100 Octane)

Indian Oil's XP100 is the biggest example of this category. This is the only petrol in India, which is completely ethanol-free (0% Ethanol) and its octane rating is 100. This fuel is very expensive and is specially designed for supercars, racing bikes and vintage cars, so that their engines can get maximum power. Its price in Delhi is currently ₹ 170/litre.

4. E85 Petrol (Flex-Fuel)

At present it is being looked at from the perspective of future fuel. E85 petrol is introduced only for flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs). It contains up to 85% ethanol and only 15% petrol. Toyota, Maruti and Hero MotoCorp have launched some models running on E85 in the market. It is very safe for the environment and much cheaper than regular petrol, but it can only be put in vehicles with flex-fuel engines. Its price in Delhi is currently ₹ 82.12/litre.

5. E100 (Pure Ethanol Fuel)

With the cooperation of the Union Transport Ministry, E100 i.e. 100% pure ethanol fuel has also got the green signal in India. It is a biofuel made entirely from sugarcane, corn and agricultural waste, which does not contain even a drop of petrol. It is currently being used in select pilot projects and specially designed flex-fuel bikes and cars. Its price has not been made public yet.

British PM Starmer's visit to promote auto industry. here's why…

  • UK-India trade deal cuts tariffs, boosts auto and defense cooperation, boosts £1.3 billion Indian investment in Britain, and targets £25.5 billion trade growth by 2040.

The recently signed UK-India trade agreement is set to reshape bilateral economic relations in the automotive and defense sectors. During his two-day visit to India, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, hailed the agreement as a foundation for deeper commercial cooperation between the two countries.

Preferred Source Banner
Preferred Source Banner

The agreement, signed in July 2025, aims to cut tariffs on key goods including textiles, whiskey and automobiles. It also provides greater market access for businesses in both countries and is expected to increase trade by £25.5 billion (approximately) 3,025 billion pounds by 2040. Within just three months of signing, trade and investment between India and the UK has already increased by £6 billion (approx.) 711 billion), reflecting an early surge in confidence among industries.

Impact on automotive sector

The reduction in tariffs on cars is expected to be a game-changer for the automotive industry in both countries. For Indian automakers, the deal provides easier access to the UK market, opening the door for brands like Tata Motors, Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki to expand exports of electric and small cars. This supports India's goal of becoming a global EV manufacturing hub, aligning with “Make in India” and green mobility initiatives.

For British carmakers, lower import duties will make luxury brands like Jaguar Land Rover, Aston Martin and Bentley more competitive in India. With tariffs on high-end vehicles reduced, Indian consumers may see more affordable luxury car prices in the coming years. It could also encourage joint research and development in clean mobility solutions, as both countries emphasize sustainability and innovation in transportation.

New investment commitments

UK confirms 64 Indian companies will collectively invest £1.3 billion ( 153.4 billion in the UK across all sectors including automotive manufacturing, clean energy and tech startups). “This is just the beginning. This is the time to invest in the United Kingdom, to invest in this relationship and to invest in our shared future,” Starmer said while addressing business leaders at the India-UK CEO Forum.

Political context and perspective

Despite occasional differences over geopolitical issues such as the Russia–Ukraine conflict, both governments stressed that their economic partnership remains strong. PM Modi emphasized the “unique synergy” between India's growth dynamism and the UK's expertise, while Starmer reaffirmed his commitment to operationalizing the trade deal within a year. For India, the deal not only boosts trade but also strengthens its quest for industrial modernisation, self-reliance and global competitiveness in key sectors such as automotive, defense and clean energy.
