Mahindra is working on a slew of new electric vehicles for the Indian market. The homegrown manufacturer showcased new concepts back in 2022 and is currently testing them on Indian roads. One of the five electric SUVs was the XUV.e9 which was spotted recently while it was charging at a Tata Motors dealership.

One of the first things that we can notice is that the charging port is located on the rear left-hand side. We have seen from the earlier spy shots that there is a plastic piece that covers the charging port. There is a C-shaped LED tail lamp that wraps around the charging port.

We also get a close look at the front-end design of the SUV Coupe. The LED headlamps are the same ones that are doing duty on the XUV.e8 so they are vertically stacked and have copper elements in them. There is also a slim air dam in the bumper for the airflow required for electrical components. There are also newly designed alloy wheels on the side with flush sitting door handles.

The Mahindra XUV.e9 will have dimensions of 4,790 mm in length, 1,905 mm in width, and a height of 1,690 mm. It will be based on the INGLO platform and feature a wheelbase of 2,775 mm. The XUV.e9 does look rather imposing and dominating because of its size which will be larger than the XUV700 for reference.

Mahindra, Ola Electric welcome new EV policy to invite global brands to India

  • The Centre has approved a new EV policy that is expected to lure foreign brands like Tesla to invest and manufacture in India.
Ola Electric
Indian auto manufacturers like Ola Electric believe that the new EV policy approved by the Centre will help India become the global EV hub of manufacturing and technology.

Indian electric vehicle manufacturers have welcomed the Centre’s decision to lower import taxes to invite foreign EV makers to invest in India and manufacture locally. On Friday (March 15), the Centre had approved a new EV policy which opened the gate for global EV brands to launch in India with the condition to invest a minimum of 4,150 crore and deadline of three years to start manufacturing locally. For India, aiming to be the next global hub for electric vehicles, the new policy could see a number of prominent companies like Tesla launching here soon.

India’s largest electric two-wheeler manufacturer Ola Electric and Mahindra, which plans to launch as many as five electric vehicles in India in the next few years, welcomed the Centre’s move. The Centre has promised to reduce EV import duties to 15 per cent for foreign carmakers if they fulfil the government’s condition on investments and local manufacturing. The policy says the imported EV prices should not exceed $35,000 (roughly converted to around 29 lakh). The condition restricts foreign EV makers to import no more than 8,000 electric cars to India in a year.

Mahindra and Mahindra issued a statement welcoming the new EV policy, It read, “The recently announced EV policy for new entrants reinforces the Make in India momentum, with requirements of bank guarantees, minimum investment commitment, and local value addition. This will help accelerate the EV ecosystem in India.” The carmaker, known more for its SUVs in India, currently offers XUV400 as the only EV in its lineup. Mahindra also said that first of its upcoming Born Electric SUVs is scheduled for India launch in January next year, most likely during the second edition of Bharat Mobility Global Expo.

Ola Electric too welcomed the new EV policy, calling it a ‘progressive decision’ to lower EV import duties. Bhavish Aggarwal, CEO and founder at Ola Electric, took to social media and said, “This is a win for the Make In India initiative & strengthens our manufacturing ecosystem, propelling India towards a greener future. India will become the global EV hub of manufacturing and technology.” Ola Electric sells the likes of S1 Pro, S1 Air and S1 X electric scooters in India.

Among global EV makers aiming for a India launch soon, Vitenam-based EV startup VinFast has also reacted to the new EV policy. Pham Sanh Chau, CEO of VinFast India, issued a statement saying, “We highly value the Indian Government’s new EV scheme as it aims to drive large investments in manufacturing, create competencies and upskilling, set up a robust supply chain and offer consumers world-class, zero tailpipe emission vehicles. With a long-term growth commitment in India, we have pledged an expenditure of $500 million.” VinFast is currently setting up an electric vehicle manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu. It plans to manufacture electric SUVs locally.

The new EV policy is seen as an opportunity for global EV brands like Tesla to launch in India. In fact, Tesla has been the most active among global brands to lobby for a lower EV import duty in India. The efforts, despite Indian EV manufacturers like Tata Motors demanding level-playing field for all, bore fruits finally. Tata Motors is yet to come out with an official statement on the new policy. However, the Centre has put certain conditions that will help to promote local manufacturing as well as bring in foreign carmakers to turn India into a new global EV hub.

The difference in the alloy wheels is notable with Mahindra moving away from the multi-spoke units on the current Thar 3-door to what appears to be a diamond-cut design. The test unit also appears to come with LED headlamps with circular LED DRLs, which further hint at the model being nearly ready for production.

The new Thar 5-door will be a more practical offering over the 3-door model while retaining the off-road capability. Previous spy shots have revealed features like the dashboard and seats, especially with a usable second row. It will also get features like an electric sunroof, a larger infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a centre armrest between the front seats, height adjustable seatbelts and AC vents for the rear passengers. It will also get a much larger boot space, making it far more practical regarding day-to-day driving.

The upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-door will also sport a longer wheelbase to support all the changes. Power is expected to come from the familiar 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo petrol engines, which could be tuned differently. Expect to see both manual and automatic transmission choices at the time of launch, while the model is also expected to arrive with 4×4. Mahindra could bring the Thar 5-door with just rear-wheel drive for a lower starting price. The SUV will take on the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and upcoming Force Gurkha 5-door when it arrives next year.

The 2024 Mahindra Racing M10Electro gets a new matte red shade, a first-ever for the team, along with silver and grey colours

The new Mahindra M10Electro gets a matte finish, which is a first in the team’s history. It also commemorates Mahindra Racing’s heritage in Formula E with 10 of the brand’s new twin-peak logos on the engine cover, one for each year of competition. The Indian team has been a part of Formula E since inception in 2014 with the championship heading into its tenth year of racing.

2024 Mahindra Racing Livery Formula E
Mahindra Racing has a new driver lineup for the upcoming Formula E season with Edoardo Mortara and Nyck de Vries behind the wheel

Speaking about the new livery, Fred Bertrand, CEO – Mahindra Racing, said, “It’s a new chapter for everybody at Mahindra Racing, and I’m very excited to unveil our livery for Season 10, which reflects both this and celebrates our long-standing commitment to Formula E. We have a very proud history in the Championship as a team, and the objective is for the actions we are taking now, in the present, to help build a brighter future on track. I can’t wait to see the cars take to the track in Mexico in the new livery.”

The last ten years have been full of many highs and a few lows for the team. This includes five e-Prix wins, 24 podiums and 10 pole positions. The last season though was rather forgettable and the team is now looking at a resurrection of sorts with the upcoming outing. Speaking to HT Auto earlier this year, Fred Bertrand explained that the team was looking forward to the new season with development still underway on the Gen3 car but was looking at a stronger return in Season 11.

To achieve this, the team had to start on a clean slate that included bringing drivers Edoardo Mortara (2021 Formula E champion) and F1 driver Nyck de Vries on board. Both drivers with their crucial experience and insight will be instrumental in the team’s turnaround strategy. Mahindra Racing also signed Indian racing driver Kush Maini as its reserve driver for the upcoming season. A more competitive team and car are expected to leave a strong mark in the upcoming season that kicks off on January 13, 2024, in Mexico.

Maruti Suzuki aims to make 40 lakh cars annually by 2031, focusing on new tech

[ad_1]

Maruti Suzuki plans to invest a whopping 45,000 crore to double its annual production capacity in the next eight years, reported PTI. Maruti Suzuki India’s chairman RC Bhargava reportedly said on Tuesday that the automaker plans to produce 40 lakh cars annually by 2031 with the influx of investment it is making to double production capacity. This comes at a juncture when the Indian auto industry like the rest of the global automobile industry is witnessing the introduction of new technologies and Maruti Suzuki is aiming to take a lead in that.

Besides focusing on doubling production capacity to 40 lakh cars annually by 2031, Maruti Suzuki is also emphasising on development of new technology for its vehicle fleet.

Despite being the largest car brand in India, Maruti Suzuki is yet to penetrate the EV segment, while Tata Motors, Hyundai, MG Motors and Mahindra along with several luxury car brands have already launched their respective products in the country’s electric car segment. Speaking about this, Bhargava accepted that the company is late in the segment but believes that it will not impact the brand by damaging its ability to get an adequate market share in the space.

He also said that Maruti Suzuki aims to launch six electric cars by the decade’s end, which would give it a strong position in the market. “Yes, we are behind some companies in launching EV but that does not mean that we are late in the market or that when we are coming in 2024-25, we will have in any way damaged our ability to get an adequate market share,” he added.

As Maruti Suzuki is thriving towards greener and cleaner powertrain technology, it will increasingly focus on a wide range of new technologies including electric vehicles, hybrids, CNG, ethanol and compressed biogas in the coming days, said Bhargava. Speaking about these technologies, he also said that it is difficult to predict what will happen in the next eight to ten years.

Bhargava also said that Maruti Suzuki has reached the 20 lakh units annual production and sales milestone. Now, it is aiming to double that figure by reaching the 40 lakh units annual production and sales milestone, he said. The plan will be part of the automaker’s ‘Maruti 3.0’ strategy, under which the company is targeting to add another 20 lakh units of production capacity with about 28 different car models in the market by FY 2030-31.

The Maruti Suzuki chairman said that the era ahead is going to be a very uncertain and challenging one. “The era before us is going to be a very uncertain era, a very challenging era. Putting up these two million cars itself will cost us something close to 45,000 crore. It depends how inflation goes but at the moment we estimate the cost about 45,000 crore for two million cars,” Bhargava said.

Mahindra Thar EV Concept to debut on 15th August

[ad_1]

Mahindra and Mahindra have teased an electric version of the Thar. It will be called Thar.e and will make its debut in concept form on 15th August in Cape Town, South Africa where the Mahindra is hosting an event called ‘Futurescape’ where the manufacturer will be showcasing a global tractor platform and a pick-up truck concept as well.

| Updated on: 05 Aug 2023, 12:44 PM

A screenshot from the teaser that Mahindra shared.

Not much is known about the Thar.e as of now. However, it can be expected that Mahindra will either re-purpose the existing platform of the Thar so that it can be used to fit batteries and electric motors or they will base the Thar.e on an all-new dedicated electric skateboard platform. Mahindra already has an electric platform called INGLO on which its upcoming electric SUVs will be based on.

Considering that Thar is an off-roader and comes with four-wheel drive, it makes sense for Mahindra to equip its electric version with a dual-motor setup where one motor sits on the front axle and another one sits on the rear axle. Having said that, what would be the icing on the cake would be a proper quad-motor setup. This means that each wheel will have its own electric motor to modulate the torque and traction individually while off-roading.

The teaser also shows us a glimpse of the rear tail lamp whose design is in line with the current Thar. So, it is a square unit with a smaller square inside. Considering this, it can be expected that the current design language of the Thar will mostly stay intact but will get a few changes here and there so that it can be recognized as the Thar.e and not the ICE version of the Thar.

Apart from this, it is important to note that Mahindra is only showing the concept version of the Thar.e so the production-spec version is still a few years away. Speaking of concepts, Mahindra will also showcase a pick-up truck concept which is expected to be based on the platform that Scorpio N and the upcoming Thar 5-door will use. Again, we do not know when the production-spec version of the pick-up truck will launch.

The Mahindra Scorpio N pickup concept will carry the legacy of the Mahindra Scorpio pickup truck and it will first break cover in South Africa.

Internally codenamed Z121, the new pickup truck will come with a longer wheelbase than the standard Scorpio N SUV. This will enable the pickup truck to accommodate a larger cargo deck. For reference, the Mahindra Scorpio Classic has a 2,600 mm wheelbase, while the pickup version of this SUV comes with a wheelbase well over 3,000 mm allowing the latter to have a cargo deck.

Mahindra has not revealed further details of the upcoming pickup truck concept, however, the teaser indicates that it will be well capable of tackling hard road challenges. A few design elements of the pickup truck concept include a double-cab body style, rugged looking front grille and chunky off-road spec tyres wrapping around large wheels.

Expect the production version of the Mahindra Scorpio N pickup truck to come to the market by 2025. It could arrive in both single and double-cab body styles. Speaking about the powertrain, the pickup truck could share the same petrol and diesel engines as the SUV. Also, there would be manual and automatic transmission options for the pickup truck. Expect it to come in both 2WD and 4WD options. It is not clear if the upcoming Mahindra Scorpio N pickup truck will replace the current Scorpio pickup or would sell alongside it.
