Who made the batteries of Mahindra's electric cars, promises a range of 682 kilometers with lifetime warranty!

Who made the batteries of Mahindra's electric cars, promises a range of 682 kilometers with lifetime warranty!

New Delhi. Indian passenger vehicle manufacturer Mahindra has recently launched two electric SUVs which are making headlines due to their features. Mahindra has launched two new electric SUVs built on the INGLO platform, BE6 E and

However, to achieve this range, the company has not used an ordinary battery in these two cars, but a new battery developed in-house. Let us know which technology Mahindra has used in its electric car.

New battery prepared in-house
Developing battery technology is the most difficult task for any car manufacturer. Since, range matters a lot in an electric car and the customer's decision to buy an electric car largely depends on the range. The company has taken the help of Chinese car manufacturer BYD to develop battery technology. Mahindra is using LFP batteries sourced from BYD in both its new electric cars, which are equipped with blade battery technology and are being used in many electric cars around the world including China for their qualities.

However, the work of packing and assembling of these batteries is being done by Mahindra at its Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai, which is the company's state of the art facility.

LFP battery is equipped with many features
BYD's LFP battery is quite different from ordinary lithium ion batteries. In this battery, Lithium iron phosphate has been used instead of Lithium-Nickel, which has more capacity to store energy. Apart from this, this battery gets less hot even with continuous use and provides better protection from water.

The company has designed the battery chamber in the car in such a way that it can withstand temperatures ranging from -30 degrees to 80 degrees. This feature gives the company an edge in battery technology over other companies like Tata Motors and Hyundai.

Currently, Mahindra is sourcing LFP battery cells from China, but once the battery agreement with Volkswagen comes into force in 2026, the company will stop purchasing them from China.

Life time warranty on battery!
Mahindra has announced a life-time warranty on the batteries of its BE6 E and XEV.9e electric cars. This means that if the battery gets damaged, customers will not have to worry about the cost of replacing it. The company is giving a standard warranty of 10 years / 2,00,000 kilometers on the batteries of both the cars. If you sell the car before 10 years, the warranty will be transferred to the new owner.

Mahindra BE6 E and XEV.9e Price
Both Mahindra BE6 E and XEV.9e are advanced cars of the company. The base model of BE6 E is priced at Rs 18.90 lakh (ex-showroom), while the price of the base model of XEV 9e has been fixed at Rs 21.90 lakh (ex-showroom).

Range of more than 680 km
Both electric cars have a 59 kWh battery in the base model and 79 kWh battery in the top model. Both generate 231 PS power and 380 Nm torque in their base models. Whereas, their top models have a claimed range of 682 km and 656 km respectively. These electric cars have single motor and rear wheel drive (RWD) system.

Electric versions of Mahindra Thar, XUV, Scorpio, Bolero being planned

Electric versions of Mahindra Thar, XUV, Scorpio, Bolero being planned

Mahindra & Mahindra on Tuesday confirmed that all its existing models with internal combustion engines will eventually also come with an electric twin. While no timeline was assigned, the company confirmed that this plan includes Bolero, Thar and Scorpio.

Mahindra and Mahindra has announced that it will step up its EV game in India by launching electric versions of all its flagship models, including the Scorpio, Bolero and XUV models, in near future.

Mahindra currently offers XUV400 in the Indian market and will have models under its BE range soon as well. But the core ICE or internal combustion engine models too will come with electric powertrain ‘in the times to come’. the ICE and EV options of each model will be sold side by side but under different portfolio. The EVs will be under Born Electric Vehicle classification.

The electric versions of the Bolero. Thar, Scorpio and XUV are branded as Bolero.e, Thar.e, Scorpio.e and XUV.e, respectively. These models would eventually cater to the lifestyle buyer who is also environmentally concerned, says the company. Mahindra has also revealed that Oscar-winning music director AR Rahman will ‘design and build’ sounds that will go into upcoming all-electric models from the carmaker.

In August 2022, Mahindra & Mahindra had offered a glimpse at its upcoming electric vehicles during an event beld in United Kingdom. The carmaker had also showcased the new EV platforms which will underpin the upcoming Thar, XUV, Bolero and Scorpio-based electric SUVs.

Mahindra will showcase the concept version of the upcoming Thar.e, the electric version of its flagship off-road SUV Thar, in Cape Town later today. The carmaker had teased the Thar.e electric SUV ahead of the global debut. The teaser shows a glimpse of the rear tail lamp design which is in line with the current Thar. Considering this, it can be expected that the current design language of the Thar will mostly stay intact but will get a few changes to give some EV signature to the Thar.e.

It is expected that Mahindra will either re-purpose the existing platform of the Thar so that it can be used to fit batteries and electric motors or they will base the Thar.e on an all-new dedicated electric skateboard platform.
