Tata's storm in the EV market! Mahindra-MG lags behind, Maruti and VinFast surprise

The electric vehicle (EV) segment in the country recorded a record performance in May 2026, with total sales of 26,221 units. Strong growth was seen in the market compared to last year till May 2025, in which Tata Motors further strengthened its hold. Tata's share in the total market reached 39.01%, while Mahindra and JSW MG Motors also performed strongly.

Entry of new companies like Maruti Suzuki and Vinfast made the market more competitive. Overall, the EV sector has recorded more than 50% annual growth, which is the result of the government's sustainable mobility policy and increasing consumer demand. Let us take a look at the model-wise sales reports of the companies.

Tata Motors

Tata Motors maintained its dominance in the EV segment in May 2026. The company registered an impressive annual growth of 102% by selling 10,231 units. Its sales in May 2025 were only 5,068 units. Tata still remains the leader in the EV market with 39.01% market share. Strong demand for models like Nexon EV, Tiago EV and Punch EV brought this success to the company.

Mahindra

Mahindra stood second and sold 6,133 units, which is 96% more than last year's 3,130 units. The company's market share increased to 23.38%. XUV400 and recently launched new models helped Mahindra grow rapidly. The company is now preparing to further expand the EV portfolio.

JSW MG Motors

MG stood third in terms of sales. The company sold 4,936 units, which is 7% more than last year's 4,594 units. Although the growth rate was low, the company has confirmed its place in the top-3 by maintaining 18.82% market share. Windsor EV and Comet EV have received good acceptance.

Maruti Suzuki

New EV player Maruti Suzuki took the fourth position by selling 1,577 units in May 2026. This is the first big performance for the company in the EV segment. Maruti has entered the market through its WagonR EV and other upcoming models.

vinfast

Vietnamese company Vinfast secured the fifth position with sales of 1,224 units. This is a positive start for the company in India. Models with attractive designs and features attracted the attention of young buyers.

Apart from the top-5 EV car companies of May 2026, BYD has sold 683 units (28% YoY growth), Hyundai has sold 454 units (-37%), BMW and Kia have sold 345-345 units, Mercedes-Benz has sold 204 units. Tesla sold 35 units, while Volvo stood at 28 units. Stellantis sales dropped drastically to 22 units. Porsche has sold 4 units. Overall, the EV transition is progressing rapidly in both the premium and mass-market segments.
