Tesla Model Y becomes cheaper! Premium RWD variant launched for just ₹ 50.89 lakh

Tesla has launched the premium RWD variant of its popular electric car Tesla Model Y in India at an aggressive price. The company has recently reduced the ex-showroom price of this variant by Rs 11.10 lakh from the top variant to Rs 50.89 lakh. This step has been taken to make the Indian EV market more attractive and increase competition.

This update is a big milestone for Tesla in India, where despite 100% import duty, the company has brought the price to an affordable level. The Model Y Premium RWD will now compete directly with luxury electric SUVs like the BMW iX1 and Mercedes CLA EV. Deliveries are scheduled to begin from July 2026 and customers can book online. EMI option is also starting from ₹39,990 per month. Let's take a look at its design, battery, motor and range details.

Design

The design of Tesla Model Y is minimalist and aerodynamic. It comes in a crossover SUV style, with sleek lines, flush door handles and a clean front-rear profile. 19-inch Crossflow wheels are standard. The new 2026 model comes with a slightly refreshed look, which includes improved aerodynamics and road noise reduction. This is a 5-seater SUV, which has a panoramic glass roof as standard, which makes the cabin spacious and bright.

The cabin feels quiet and refined with noise-deadening insulation.

Features and safety

Its feature list includes 16-inch touchscreen + 8-inch rear screen, ventilated and heated seats, panoramic glass roof, advanced autopilot (FSD optional, additional ₹ 6 lakh), 360-degree camera and over-the-air features with wireless updates.

Tesla vehicles are always known for safety. Model Y has received a 5-star crash rating. It has 9 airbags, forward collision warning, emergency braking, lane departure avoidance and 360 degree sensors. Along with structural safety, both active and passive safety are available.

Which one is better to buy between Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model YL? Know

Which one is better to buy between Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model YL? Know

The difference between Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model YL is mainly in size, seating and performance. The starting price of Model Y in India is around ₹59.9 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Model YL goes up to around ₹61.99 lakh. That is, for a nominal price difference, Model YL offers more space, more seats and better performance, making it more attractive especially for family use.

Talking about design, both SUVs get Tesla's signature minimalist styling, smooth body lines and LED lighting setup. However, the Model YL is slightly larger in size and longer, which makes its road presence look more powerful. It has been given newly designed alloy wheels and a slightly updated rear look, which makes it different from the standard Model Y, but the overall design language remains largely the same.

Cabin and Comfort

The biggest difference is seen in the interior. While Model Y comes with a 5-seater layout, Model YL has been introduced in a 6-seater (2+2+2) configuration. Captain seats and third row are also provided in the second row of Model YL, which makes it more practical for a large family. Due to the long wheelbase, it gets better legroom and headroom, which provides more comfort in long journeys.

Features and safety

Both the cars are quite advanced in terms of features, but Model YL is slightly ahead. It has features like large touchscreen infotainment system, separate display for second row, premium sound system, heated steering wheel, adaptive suspension and ventilated seats. All these upgrades make it a more premium and comfort-focused SUV, especially for those who prioritize technology and luxury.

In terms of safety, both models get Tesla's Advanced Safety Package, which includes multiple airbags, ADAS (autopilot features), 360 degree camera and several driver assist systems. Despite the extra seating in the Model YL, the safety features are tuned to provide adequate protection to passengers in every row, making it a reliable choice for families.

Battery, Motor and Range

Model Y gets about 60 kWh battery and rear-wheel drive setup, while Model YL has a larger battery of about 88 kWh and dual motor AWD system. This makes Model YL more powerful and its 0-100 km/h acceleration is also better. In terms of range, Model Y can run up to about 500 km, while Model YL offers a longer range of up to about 680 km, which makes it more suitable for long drives.

Overall, if you want a stylish and practical electric SUV then the Model Y is adequate, but if your priority is more space, more seats, better performance and longer range, then the Model YL may prove to be a more sensible choice.
