Imagine refuelling your vehicle and completing the entire payment without ever reaching for your smartphone or wallet. This seamless convenience is currently being piloted for Tata vehicle owners via a newly introduced system branded as “DrivePay.”
ToneTag has deployed this innovative in-car fuel payment solution for TATA.CARS in strategic partnership with IndianOil. Officially unveiled at the Global Fintech Fest 2026, the technology utilises an advanced IoT-enabled version of NPCI’s secure UPI Circle framework.
The system bridges the vehicle directly to the payment infrastructure through the car’s native dashboard interface. Initial installations are actively underway at select IndianOil retail outlets, with a wider commercial rollout scheduled over the coming months
How DrivePay Works
The main purpose of DrivePay is to make fuel payments possible through the connected car itself. After refuelling, the user can complete the payment from the vehicle interface. There is no need to use:
- A separate mobile payment app
- A physical bank card
- Another payment device
ToneTag provides the technology that connects the payment system with the vehicle. This makes the dashboard part of the payment process.
IndianOil Rewards Also Included
DrivePay is not only about making the payment. The system also connects with IndianOil’s XTRAREWARDS programme.
Eligible users can earn reward points while making fuel payments through the system. They can also do this without sharing their mobile number during the transaction.

Bengaluru Based ToneTag Behind the Technology
ToneTag is a Bengaluru based payment technology company under Naffa Innovations Pvt. Ltd. The company works on digital payment systems for connected devices.
Its technology has been successfully integrated across a diverse spectrum of hardware, including smartphones, merchant POS terminals, audio soundboxes, wearables, and smart vehicles
For DrivePay, ToneTag manages the core underlying technology layer that securely interfaces the connected vehicle with the cloud-based UPI payment framework.
Bengaluru Based ToneTag Behind the Technology
The partnership brings together four different parts of the system. IndianOil provides its fuel station network, TATA.CARS provides the connected vehicle platform, ToneTag handles the payment technology and NPCI provides the digital payment framework.
ToneTag also plans to explore similar services with other car manufacturers and mobility companies.
This could open the door to more payments through connected vehicles in the future. Fuel is the first use case for DrivePay, but connected cars could also be used for other services and purchases.
