HiPhi A is an all-electric high-performance sedan designed and developed by a Chinese EV manufacturer called HiPhi. The electric super sedan is slated to make its debut at the 2023 Guangzhou Auto Show. The EV comes with a design that has been inspired by the automaker’s previous electric car HiPhi Z, which was unveiled in March this year.

HiPhi A
2/6

The HiPhi A looks like to have taken a bit of design inspiration from the Nissan GT-R, as its front profile comes with some significant resemblances. However, the overall design is distinctive and looks outlandish. The EV looks more like an elongated hatchback rather than a fully grown sedan.

HiPhi A
3/6

The EV sports a bifurcated roof spoiler with a sleek LED light bar integrated to it. There is another wider LED light-bar that acts as the taillight of the EV, while the car sports a massive rear diffuser enhancing its bold visual appeal. The EV manufacturer has clearly emphasised on the aerodynamic efficiency of the HiPhi A while designing the car.

HiPhi A

Inside the cabin, the car doesn’t boast an extraordinary look. However, being a high-end performance EV, the HiPhi A gets a premium vibe. There is a large landscape-oriented touchscreen infotainment system, a fully digital instrument cluster and a dual-spoke multifunction steering wheel. It looks like HiPhi has emphasised on digital interfaces inside the cabin of the car.

HiPhi A

The HiPhi A gets carbon fibre incorporated to various places inside the cabin that not only reduce the weight of the EV, but enhances rigidity as well. The car gets a centre console that reminds us of Lamborghini supercars. Clearly, the manufacturer has kept an eye on the details of the HiPhi A.

HiPhi A

HiPhi has revealed that the car comes with three different electric motors, with one mounted to the front axle and other two fitted to the rear axle and chanelling power to the rear wheels. Its battery pack size is unknown yet but expect a large pack to be there. HiPHi A promises 1,270 bhp of peak power and can run at a top speed of 300 kmph, with the capability to sprint to 96 kmph from standstill position in just two seconds.

The Sound Edition will come as the latest addition to the list of special edition iterations of the sedan and SUV.

Watch: Volkswagen Virtus: First Drive Review

Both the upcoming special edition cars are likely to come with a host of cosmetic updates across the exterior and inside the cabin. However, mechanically, both these special edition cars are likely to remain the same as the standard models.

Watch: Volkswagen Taigun: First Drive Review

The Volkswagen Virtus is available at a starting price of 11.48 lakh (ex-showroom), while the GT Edge Limited Edition of the sedan comes priced from 17.10 lakh (ex-showroom). The standard Volkswagen Taigun is priced at 11.62 lakh (ex-showroom), while the GT Edge Trail Edition and GT Edge Limited Edition of the Taigun are priced at 16.30 lakh and 18 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively. Expect the upcoming Sound Edition of Virtus and Taigun to be priced higher than the standard versions and to be based on the top-end trims of the respective cars.

Qatar MotoGP results: Di Giannantonio wins, Martin struggles to 10th place

Qatar MotoGP results: Di Giannantonio wins, Martin struggles to 10th place

After a commanding Tissot sprint victory on Saturday, Jorge Martin faced tyre issues and only managed 10th place on Sunday.

A thrilling MotoGP race under the floodlights in Qatar saw an ebullient Fabio Di Giannantonio take his first-ever MotoGP victory. Rounding out an all-Italian podium were Ducati Lenovo’s Francesco Bagnaia, who increased his championship lead, and Mooney VR46 Racing’s Luca Marini, who is strongly tipped to default to Repsol Honda next year.

  1. Martin struggles to 10th place, blames tyre issue
  2. Bagnaia’s championship lead grows to 21 points
  3. 37 points up for grabs at the final round in Valencia

Di Giannantonio-Bagnaia battle nearly ends in tears

Championship leader Francesco Bagnaia only managed fifth place in qualifying, but rocketed off the line to get the holeshot into turn one. Behind him, three other Ducatis jostled for the position – Marini and the Gresini racing pair of Di Giannantonio and Alex Marquez. Di Giannantonio emerged as the quickest of the chasers, and found himself glued to Bagnaia’s rear tyre for much of the race.

Had he been given a contract renewal for next year, Di Giannantonio may well have refrained from attacking Ducati’s star rider and championship hopeful. But seeing as how he’s currently unemployed for next year, the outgoing Gresini rider made a brave move to get past Bagnaia on lap 19. What followed was a hair-raising moment as Bagnaia got sucked into Di Giannantonio’s slip-stream braking from 350kph into turn one. The championship leader nearly ran into the back of his countryman, only narrowly avoiding contact, and running wide into the tarmac run-off area. Fortunately, with a 5-second gap behind him, Bagnaia was able to rejoin in second place, where he finished the race.

Jorge Martin sees championship hopes fade away

After a successful outing in Saturday’s Tissot Sprint sprint where he halved his points deficit to championship leader Francesco Bagnaia, Prima Pramac Racing’s Jorge Martin had a disastrous Qatar GP on Sunday, only managing 10th place. The Spaniard blamed his poor performance on a tyre issue – he had massive wheelspin at the race start, and seemed to struggle for rear grip throughout the GP, even looking back at his rear tyre immediately after crossing the chequered flag. The Ducati man was vocal about the issue in his post-race debriefs, saying that the tyre felt “like a stone” from the start, and he felt like the championship had been “stolen” from him.

With his 10th place finish giving him just 6 points, and Bagnaia picking up 20 points for his second place finish, the gap at the top of the standings grows to 21 points, with 37 points still up for grabs at the final round in Valencia this weekend. After Sunday’s result, Bagnaia has one hand already on the championship trophy – the Italian can afford to finish both races (the sprint and the main race) in fifth place and still be assured the championship victory. If this were to happen with Martin winning both races, the pair would end up equal on points, with the title going to Bagnaia by virtue of his greater number of race wins over the season.

He is currently competing in Formula 2 and scored his first podium in Melbourne, Australia, this year.

Speaking about joining Mahindra Racing, Kush Maini said, “It’s a huge honour to be joining Mahindra Racing. Being an Indian driver, and the team being Indian, it feels in many ways like coming home. A lot of my work will be concentrated on the simulator, and hopefully getting in the car for the Rookie Test. I’m just going to try and learn as much as I can, it’s a different style of racing. I’ll be doing as much work as possible on the sim with the engineers to try and be helpful for both Edoardo and Nyck and to try and help push the team forward on track. Mahindra is a huge manufacturer, so for me, it’s a massive deal to be signing with them. Being an Indian brand, it’s the cherry on top of the cake. I’m super excited to get started.”

Mahindra Racing’s CEO Frederic Bertrand, said, “We are excited to welcome Kush to Mahindra Racing as a Reserve Driver. He has a great record that speaks for itself in the junior formulae and is an exciting talent to add to our driver lineup. We are a very future-focused team, so the opportunity to support new and emerging talent, such as Kush, is one we are naturally keen to explore. We’ve been watching him in FIA Formula 2 this season, and we believe he has all the key skills and attributes to help Mahindra Racing push on for greater success in the future. His synergy with Edoardo, Nyck and Jordan will play an important role in the team’s continued push for better performance on-track, and off-track he is a superb ambassador for India within motorsport.”

Kush Maini is the protégé of two-time Formula 1 champion Mika Hakkinen and will be driving the M10Electro electric race car, alongside fellow reserve driver Jordan King. The team signed Nyck de Vries and Edoardo Mortara as its main drivers earlier this year. As part of his role, Maini will be involved in simulator sessions, attend selected e-Prix events to support the team and have the opportunity to test the M10Electro race car on select occasions. Maini was also signed by the Alpine Academy as a junior driver earlier this year

The 2023/24 Formula E will kick off in January next year with the Mexico e-Prix. The all-electric racing championship is all set to return to India for the second time next season with the Hyderabad e-Prix added to the calendar. Prior to Kush, Mumbai-based F2 driver Jehan Daruvala joined the team as a reserve driver last season.

F1: Max Verstappen wins inaugural Las Vegas GP concluding a chaotic weekend

F1: Max Verstappen wins inaugural Las Vegas GP concluding a chaotic weekend

He changed his tune — literally — following his 18th win of the season.

“Viva Las Vegas! Viva Las Vegas!” sang Verstappen as he crossed under the checkered flag waved by Justin Bieber. Verstappen had slammed Saturday night’s spectacle at every chance, yet raced in an Elvis-inspired firesuit and took the victory on the famed Las Vegas Strip.

“I hope everyone enjoyed it, we definitely did. Excited to come back here next year and try to do something similar,” said Verstappen, who had markedly reversed his weeklong position on the Las Vegas spectacle.

“It was a fun race. I enjoyed it,” he conceded.

Verstappen passed Charles Leclerc at the start then overcame a penalty to pass Leclerc once more with 13 laps remaining to continue his season-long dominance. Verstappen, Leclerc and Sergio Perez were driven in a limousine to a stage located near the Bellagio — “we go straight to the nightclub,” Verstappen told his fellow podium finishers — but they were instead treated to the casino’s famed fountain show.

The Bellagio fountains had been turned off all week and restarted as part of the victory celebration. None of the participants seemed remotely interested as they stood chatting. After receiving their trophies, they were treated to a New Year’s Eve-style fireworks show over the Strip.

Martin Garrix then launched into a throbbing DJ set to entertain those who opened their wallets for the most expensive spectator race of the season. Celebrities danced along on the grid and everyone seemed thrilled with the show. The stars in attendance included Brad Pitt, Rihanna, Usain Bolt and Shaquille O’Neal as F1 said it drew more than 315,000 spectators over the weekend and estimated an economic impact of $1.2 billion to Las Vegas.

“I really enjoyed it and I am especially happy that we finished the weekend on a high note because it was hurting me to see the sport that I love so much starting so wrong on Thursday,” said Leclerc. “The fact that we had an amazing race makes it all better.”

The race was the third stop this season in the United States, more than any other country, and was promoted by F1 and owner Liberty Media. But the event has been lambasted — especially by Verstappen — for its emphasis on becoming a neon extravaganza.

Tickets were expensive, hotels along the famed Strip hiked their prices, and the sporting element of the 21st race of the season was overshadowed by everything from celebrities, musical acts and a myriad of Elvis impersonators roaming the paddock that included a wedding chapel where former F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve was married earlier in the week.

Liberty expected to spend $500 million on the first grand prix it self-promoted, but paddock speculation before Saturday night’s race was that Liberty had gone well over budget. The entire event nearly imploded nine minutes into the first practice session on Thursday night when Carlos Sainz Jr. ran over a water drain valve cover on the track that badly damaged his Ferrari and F1 had to close the 3.85-mile (6.2-kilometer) circuit for inspection.

Fans were forced to leave at 1:30 a.m. Friday morning after witnessing just nine minutes of track activity. The second practice started at 2:30 a.m. and ran until 4 a.m., and instead of an apology, F1 simply offered $200 credits to the LVGP merchandise store to any ticket holders who had only purchased Thursday access. A class-action lawsuit was filed Friday against the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

It made it critical for F1 to deliver a good race Saturday night and, even though it was Verstappen’s sixth consecutive victory, it was one of the most spirited events of the season. Additionally, a track that had been likened to a “flying pig” because of its layout was praised for its raciness.

Seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, who finished seventh for Mercedes, said the circuit “provided a better race than most of the tracks we go to.”

“I don’t think the music stopped this entire weekend in the paddock,” said Logan Sargeant of Williams, the only American driver in F1.

Leclerc and teammate Sainz had qualified 1-2 on Friday but Sainz was handed a 10-place penalty on the starting grid because Ferrari was forced to change his car due to the damage from hitting the drain cover. That pushed Verstappen up to second for the start and he immediately pounced.

The Dutchman forced Leclerc off track to take the lead, and although Leclerc demanded that Verstappen be forced to give the position back, Verstappen was only handed a five-second penalty. He served it during a later pit stop, but his Red Bull is so strong, he remained in contention the entire race.

Leclerc passed Perez for the lead with 17 laps remaining, and then three laps later Verstappen passed his teammate to take second. He and Perez then worked to create a tow that allowed Verstappen to catch Leclerc for the win with 13 laps remaining.

Perez had worked his way past Leclerc for second but Leclerc grabbed it back at the finish to deny Red Bull its seventh 1-2 finish of the season.

“I wanted that win so bad,” Leclerc said. “I enjoyed it so much. Second place with a lot of fights. There is no better race for the first race in Vegas.”

With Hamilton finishing seventh, Perez locked up second to Verstappen in the season driver standings.

The Leclerc finish helped Ferrari cut its deficit to Mercedes to four points for second in the constructor championship heading into next week’s finale at Abu Dhabi.

Lando Norris of McLaren was involved in an early accident and taken to a local hospital for precautionary reasons. He was released shortly after the fireworks show.

2023 F1, Las Vegas GP results: Verstappen defeats Leclerc, Perez

2023 F1, Las Vegas GP results: Verstappen defeats Leclerc, Perez

Action-packed Las Vegas GP saw Verstappen defeat both Leclerc and Perez to score his 18th win this season.

The Las Vegas GP may have gotten off to a rocky start, but the venue delivered plenty of action on race day. Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez all led the race at some point, but Verstappen ended up taking his 18th win of the season. And it was a hard-fought win, with Verstappen overcoming a penalty, wing damage and overtaking his rivals along the way.

  1. Vertsappen wins, 2.070secs from Leclerc
  2. Perez goes from P11 to P3

Verstappen wins Las Vegas GP thriller

Verstappen took the lead at the start, but was handed a five-second time penalty for forcing Leclerc off track. Leclerc then passed Verstappen on Lap 16, just before the Red Bull driver headed into the pits to serve his penalty.

While trying to claw his way back into the lead, Verstappen collided with George Russell, with both cars picking up some damage in the process. Russell was given a five-second time penalty for the incident.

Down the order, Sergio Perez was gaining ground, having pitted on the opening lap after contact with Valtteri Bottas. The Safety Car – brought out to clean up the debris on track following the Verstappen/Russell clash – gave Perez the perfect opportunity. The Mexican took his final pitstop and emerged just behind Leclerc. He briefly even took the lead, but Leclerc repassed him a few laps later.

All of this allowed Verstappen to catch up and he cleared both Perez and Leclerc to take victory. With this, the Red Bull driver now equals Sebastian Vettel’s tally of F1 wins. “It was a tough one,” Verstappen admitted.

“I tried to go for it [with Leclerc] at the start. I think we both braked quite late, then I just ran out of grip and we ended up a bit wide, so the stewards gave me a penalty for that. Of course, that put us a little bit on the backfoot, I had to pass quite a few cars, then the Safety Car again. At the point already there was a lot going on in the race,”

“Once we had the message to the end we could go flat-out. You could clearly see with the DRS around here it was very powerful, so even when you would take the lead, if the guy behind would stay in the DRS, he would still have an opportunity to come back at you. I think it created quite a lot of good racing here today, so it was definitely a lot of fun.”

Leclerc defeats Perez for P2

Leclerc locked up into Turn 14, handing P2 to Sergio Perez. But the Ferrari driver remained within DRS range and pulled off a move on the very last lap, into the Turn 14 braking zone, to reclaim P2.

Russell finished P4 on track, but his penalty dropped him to eighth place. This handed P4 to Esteban Ocon. Lance Stroll was fifth, followed by Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton. Fernando Alonso and Oscar Piastri completed the top 10.

There’s just one more F1 race to go this year, with Abu Dhabi set to host the finale on November 24-25.

Kia Carens 1.5 Turbo review: Family car with a hint of excitement?

Kia Carens 1.5 Turbo review: Family car with a hint of excitement?

MPVs are often ignored by people when they are out in the market to buy a new car. Yes, MPVs do make a lot of sense for Indian families, they are spacious, and practical and would fulfil most of the household needs. However, not everyone prefers their design or wants to be seen in them. This is where the Carens from Kia changed the game. It is an MPV that takes design inspiration from SUVs.

By: Paarth Khatri
| Updated on: 18 Nov 2023, 18:00 PM

Kia has not made any cosmetic changes to the Carens.

Kia used to offer the Carens with three engine options – 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol, 1.4-litre turbo petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. A few months back, the 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine was replaced by a 1.5-litre turbo unit. The new engine is offered with a 6-speed iMT and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. We got to review the 1.5-litre turbo with DCT transmission and here are my thoughts about it.

Kia Carens 1.5 Turbo: Powertrain

The 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine gets a direct injection. It produces 158 bhp of max power and 253 Nm of peak torque. That is a bump of 20 bhp and 11 Nm over the 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

Kia Carens
The new 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine is very smooth and refined.

The engine pulls quite hard and there is plenty of torque available for quick overtakes. The power is delivered in a linear manner and there is torque available throughout the rev range. The engine is very smooth and refined too which helps in keeping the cabin quiet. There are three driving modes on offer – Eco, Normal and Sport. The Eco mode is plenty to drive in the city and the Normal mode is suited for driving on the highways. The Sport mode is where things get a bit serious as the engine gets more responsive, the transmission holds on to the gear and shifting gears can be a bit jerky.

Speaking of transmission, it is very seamless in Eco and Normal mode, most of the time the gearshifts are not even noticeable. It tries to hold on to the second gear in traffic which can make the driver feel a bit of lag. However, there are paddle shifters using which the driver can take manual control of the gearbox and they respond fairly quickly.

Kia Carens 1.5 Turbo: Ride and handling

Kia Carens
The interior feels quite premium and is well laid out. However, the piano-black elements could get scratched-up easily.

In terms of ride quality, the Carens is quite comfortable. The suspension does a good job of ironing out bumps and potholes. The steering is light which makes it quite easy to drive in cities. However, as soon as you show Carens some corners, you are immediately reminded that it is an MPV because of the body roll.

Kia Carens 1.5 Turbo: Fuel efficiency

In the city, we managed to get a fuel efficiency figure of just under 10 kmpl whereas out on the highways, the fuel efficiency climbed up to 17 kmpl.

Watch: Kia Carens Diesel: First Drive Review

Kia Carens 1.5 Turbo: Verdict

If you are looking for a people mover that does not look like a typical MPV, then you can take a look at the Carens. It comes packed with features, has an up-market interior and a powerful engine. So, it can serve as a family vehicle with a hint of enthusiasm because of that turbo engine.

Badminton player Saina Nehwal recently took the delivery of her new Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 priced from ₹1.61 crore (ex-showroom) (X/@NSaina)

The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 SUV is the performance version of the popular GLE SUV. The coupe-styled offering gets the AMG treatment complete with the Panamericana grille, quad exhausts, AMG alloy wheels, AMG sports seats, Alcantara leather upholstery, and so much more. Saina Nehwal’s AMG GLE 53 is finished in black, which lends a menacing look to the offering.

Much like its owner, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 SUV sprints when given the push. Power comes from the 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 engine tuned for 603 bhp and 850 Nm of peak torque, paired with the 9-speed AMG SpeedShift automatic transmission. The motor also comes with the 48-volt mild-hybrid system, called the EQ Boost, which further brings a power boost of 21 bhp and 250 Nm, improving initial acceleration and overall efficiency on the performance coupe SUV.

The AMG GLE 53 can sprint from 0-100 kmph in just 3.8 seconds with a top speed of 280 kmph. Other notable elements include the 22-inch alloy wheels, signature LED DRL styling, AMG steering wheel with shortcut dials, Nappa leather seats, twin-screen infotainment system with the MBUX UI, as well as an air suspension for an adjustable ride height.

Saina Nehwal seems to have a liking for coupe SUVs as the Padma Bhushan awardee previously owned the BMW X6, the model that started the trend of coupe SUVs. She was also gifted a BMW 3 Series by cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, the India brand ambassador of the German automaker at the time, for her stellar performance in the 2012 London Olympics. Hyundai Motor India also presented the sports star with the Creta First Anniversary Edition in 2016 for her win in the Australian Open Championship.

On the work front, Saina is now working to make a comeback to badminton on the international stage after a brief hiatus due to a knee injury.

Here too, the automatic transmission could carry a premium of about Rs. 1.30 lakh thus stretching the tentative price range from Rs. 18.0 lakh to Rs. 21.0 lakh (ex-showroom).

The 1.5L turbo diesel engine may only get the manual transmission. The Curvv diesel variants could cost between Rs. 12.50 lakh and Rs. 19.0 lakh.

V3Cars’ History Of Wins And Losses With Tata Cars

If you have followed our price reaction articles and videos for a while, you’d know that we tend to get the starting price pretty accurately for Tata cars. In case you haven’t seen our track record, you can visit the following links:

New-Gen Tata Nexon Price Reaction — Expected Vs Launch Price

2023 Tata Harrier Price Reaction — Expected Vs Launch Price

Tata Safari Facelift Price Reaction — Expected Vs Launch Price

You’ll notice a pattern in our price predictions for Tata cars. We tend to get the starting and lower variant prices quite well but our optimism takes over with higher trims. We expect Tata to be somewhat reasonable and they end up disappointing. This is even after we factor in their confidence. They show us a new level of confidence — or should I call it arrogance.

2 Sides To The Problem — How We Arrived At Rs. 11.0 Lakh Starting Price? — Curvv Base Model Expected Price

On the one hand, Tata are looking extremely confident in their offerings. Thus, the prices of their higher trims end up pushing new limits. The Nexon breached the Rs. 15.0 lakh limit — a first for a B2 SUV. The Harrier and Safari breached the Rs. 25.0 lakh barrier. With an ex-showroom price of Rs. 26.57, only the XUV700’s top variant with diesel-automatic powertrain and 4WD decisively breaches this limit. The 2WD version barely crosses it. Meanwhile, we have the Safari top model carrying an ex-showroom price of Rs. 27.34 lakh without a 4WD system. If that’s not arrogance, I don’t know what is.

On the other hand, we have the Curvv entering a segment with multiple big dogs. The Creta, Seltos and Grand Vitara have their feet welded in the C-SUV space with each car crossing the 10,000 monthly deliveries each. So, Tata aren’t just going against a segment leader. They have 3 established segment leaders.

Now, they may not have so much experience fighting off rivals in the D segment. But they sure have experience establishing a stronghold in the dense B2 SUV space. The Nexon managed to carve out a space for itself when EcoSport and Brezza were the top players. Sonet and Venue later attempted to cause some damage but failed to put a dent in Nexon’s popularity.

Moreover, Tata tend to keep the starting prices fairly reasonable. So, we don’t expect much deviation from the segment norm, which is about Rs. 11.0 lakh base price for a C-SUV.

Tata Curvv 2024 Top Model Expected Price

On the upper limit, the price of Rs. 21.0 lakh may not seem much like Tata’s as they usually blow through all established norms. But, this time, they have some serious competition. So, they may just keep their “confidence” in check and cap the Curvv’s launch price at Rs. 21.0 lakh for the 1.5L turbo petrol engine. Although, the larger engine may not become available at launch as the DCT might need more time with the 225Nm engine (new 1.2L turbo petrol) before doing duty with the 280Nm engine (1.5L turbo petrol).

New Renault Duster SUV leaked ahead of debut. Check what is new

French auto giant Renault is all set to take the covers off the new Duster SUV on November 29. The compact SUV, which was discontinued from Indian markets earlier, will come with fresh looks, updated interiors and new engine under the hood. Ahead of the unveiling, key details about the 2024 Duster have been leaked. Developed in collaboration with its UK partner Dacia, the new Duster is expected to be launched first in the European countries. India will have to wait at least till next year for the French carmaker to re-introduce the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos rival. Here is a quick look at what to expect from the new Renault Duster SUV.

By: HT Auto Desk
| Updated on: 17 Nov 2023, 14:14 PM

The new Renault Duster will look starkly different from the one that was sold in India. Developed with its UK-based partner Dacia, the new Duster will come with a new-look grille and a butch profile.

The SUV will be based on the French carmaker’s CMF-B platform. The French auto giant uses the dame platform for its electric vehicles too. The new Duster could come in ICE avatar, along with hybrid, CNG versions as well. The platform leaves Renault with a chance to even manufacture an electric Duster in future too.

The new Duster SUV will come with several changes in its design. The changes include new horizontal LED headlights, a new grille and a redesigned bumper with updated air intakes. The side profile will now come with more muscle and creases. At the rear, the new Duster will come with new Y-shaped light clusters and a sloping rear window with a spoiler.

The interior of the new Duster will also be heavily updated. According to reports, the SUV will come with new upholstery, redesigned dashboard among other changes. Expect the Duster to offer features like a larger touchscreen infotainment system measuring no less than 8 inches, digital driver display, wireless charger, sunroof, automatic climate control, wireless connectivity among others.

Under the hood, Renault is expected to offer the new Duster with both petrol as well hybrid powertrains. Among the new engines, Renault may add a 1.2-litre mild-hybrid unit which can generate 130 hp of power as well as a 1.6-litre fully-hybrid unit that can churn out 140 hp of power. A CNG version cannot be ruled out either besides the regular petrol Duster with a 1.5-litre unit. The engines are likely to be offered with both manual and automatic transmission.

Mumbai Trans Harbour Link road map, route, opening date, cost, details

Mumbai Trans Harbour Link road map, route, opening date, cost, details

After a long wait, the MTHL will be thrown open to the public from December 25, 2023.

Published On Nov 17, 2023 06:06:00 PM

Anyone who travels from South and Central Mumbai to Navi Mumbai should be rejoicing from December 25, 2023 as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) road opens to the public. This important and rather impressive feat of engineering should prove a boon to road users in the Island City and some of its suburbs. We’ve compiled some pertinent and fun facts about the MTHL to gauge just how beneficial it will be.

How long is it?

The total length of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link is 21.8km, and 16.5km of that goes over the Thane Creek, making it India’s longest sea bridge. To put that into perspective, the Bandra-Worli Sea Link spans just 5.6km, stretching over Mahim Bay.

There will be around 5.5km of highways on land, which will include interchanges to facilitate connections to the Eastern Freeway in Sewri, Mumbai and Chirle in Navi Mumbai. While most of the MTHL is made of concrete, there is a 4.7km steel span in the middle to allow for ships to pass underneath.

The MTHL will have six lanes – three east-bound and three west-bound – along with an emergency lane on both sides.

How fast can you go?

Commuters will be able to traverse the 21.8km length quite quickly as the MMRDA has assigned a speed limit of 100kph on the highway. In addition, the usual bunch up at toll plazas should be mitigated somewhat by an Open Road Tolling (ORT) system. Keep about Rs 200 available on your FASTag, as the toll amount for a private car should be in that region. The MMRDA has stated that tolls would be collected until 2045.

An India-first

For the first time in India, Orthotropic Steel Decks (OSDs) – seven of them – have been used to build a bridge. An OSD is a fabricated deck that consists of a structural steel deck plate stiffened either longitudinally or transversely, or in both directions, which increases load carrying capacities. The spans of the decks range between 90m and 180m.

Safety and security

There are a number of factors that contrinute to safety, and not just for vehicles on the road. One is that the Rs 17,843 crore project will have sound barriers, mufflers and ecologically sensitive lighting for large sections to protect the movement of flamingos and migratory birds. In addition, there will also be vision barriers – as some parts of the MTHL will go past the sensitive area of BARC – along with Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) such as the 130 speed cameras, CCTV cameras, variable message signs (VMS), and more.

Beyond Transport

A 5.6km-long temporary access bridge had been built to transport equipment and workers for construction, but instead of wasting money demolishing it, the MMRDA announced that it would convert the road into a bird-watching platform.

Made-in-India Honda Elevate unveiled in Japan as the new-generation WR-V

Made-in-India Honda Elevate unveiled in Japan as the new-generation WR-V

Honda has unveiled the new-generation WR-V SUV for the Japanese market and the all-new offering is none other than the Elevate sold in India. The Honda Elevate made its global debut in India earlier this year and the compact SUV is being manufactured and exported from the automaker’s Tapukara plant in Rajasthan to its home market. Interestingly, the WR-V was also a nameplate used by Honda Car India for its Jazz-based crossover, which was discontinued earlier this year.

The new Honda WR-V for Japan is the made-in-India Elevate exported from the automaker’s Tapukara facility

Honda says the WR-V name stands for “Winsome Runabout Vehicle” and winsome stands for “fun” and “cheerfulness.” The company says the new SUV has been developed keeping the versatile lifestyles of customers. While both versions look visually identical, there are plenty of changes on the Japanese model to take note of on the Japanese model.

The new Honda WR-V for Japan comes with an all-black cabin and different upholstery. In contrast, the Indian version gets brown and tan colours across the interior. The leather accents on the dashboard have been skipped as well. Honda Japan is also offering five monotone shades as against seven monotone and three dual-tone shades on the Indian version.

On the feature front, the JDM-spec model gets a different touchscreen infotainment system with buttons on the right, instead of the 10-inch infotainment unit seen here. The unit does come Honda remote control that allows you to remotely access certain functions on the car. It also gets Honda ALSOK rush service for theft and mischief, navigation, and in-car Wi-Fi. However, it misses out on features like an electric sunroof and wireless charging, which are otherwise available in the Indian model.

The Japanese-spec Elevate also gets Honda Sensing bringing a suite of ADAS features like a LaneWatch camera, reverse camera, Collision mitigation brake, Adaptive cruise control, Lane keeping support System, Auto high beam, parking sensors and a whole lot more. Power on the JDM-spec model will come from the 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated i-VTEC engine that’s also available in India. The petrol motor develops 119 bhp and 145 Nm of peak torque and will be available with only the CVT automatic option. India gets the 6-speed manual transmission as well. Much like India, Japan also does not get a hybrid version of the Elevate.

Two-wheeler sales witness double digit growth during festive season

Two-wheeler sales witness double digit growth during festive season

Roughly 2.5 million to 3 million two-wheelers sold between Navratri and the end of Diwali season.

The Indian two-wheeler market, which posted a flattish sale in the 2022 festive season, is back to a strong double-digit growth inching closer to the previous peak on the back of a growing economy and initial signs of revival at the bottom end of the pyramid. Close to 2.5 million to 3 million units are estimated to have been retailed between Navratri and the end of Diwali season.

The leading players Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor Company – three of the top four two-wheeler makers – claim to have grown by double digits in the first half of this season, starting from Onam in August till Navratri in October and are estimated to have sustained the strong momentum of Navratri and Dussehra into Dhanteras and Diwali, concluding the season with Bhaidooj.

Hero MotoCorp, the largest two-wheeler maker, had already guided for strong double-digit growth during the analyst conference call. Niranjan Gupta, CEO of Hero MotoCorp, had said the demand momentum has been very strong both from rural and urban markets. “The festive season has started off very well and overall, we do expect momentum building as we move forward. So far, we have grown by 15 percent and we expect that the market will grow in double digits this season,” Gupta said.

Last festive season, Hero MotoCorp had sold over 1.2 million vehicles between Navratri to Diwali, but this time around, assuming a minimum growth of 15 percent guided by the company, it is likely to have retailed about 1.3 million to 1.4 million.

And both its key Indian rivals – Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor Company – have already outperformed the market in the first half of the season from Onam to Dussehra and both companies had expressed confidence in posting a double-digit growth this season. “We are expecting 12-15 percent industry growth during the festive season as compared to a similar period last year. Our recently launched Pulsar N150 is doing well, and we expect to outpace the industry growth on the back of our strong performance in the 125cc plus segment,” Rakesh Sharma, executive director of Bajaj Auto, told our sister publication Autocar Professional during a quarterly media conference call.

This growth can be attributed to a key segment of entry two-wheeler buyers coming back. Hero MotoCorp has already witnessed a growth in its 100-110cc segment led by the new launches and TVS Motor Company too believes that the rural market is coming back and it will help the overall market.

Federation of Automotive Dealers Association (FADA) in its review of the Navratri-Dussehra season had said that the two-wheeler category saw several positive trends, buoyed by festive cheer and stronger rural demand. Enhanced availability of models, especially those in high demand from the previous year, along with better financial schemes, contributed to a solid market momentum.

“States going into elections also injected optimism into the market, leading to an increase in government spending and improved liquidity,” FADA said in its statement. “Despite a shift in festival dates with Diwali moving to November, the anticipation of the festive season stimulated purchase intent and dealers reported good stock preparation and robust ground efforts that led to an uptick in sales figures, showcasing a resilient and adaptive market.”

The average inventory for the two-wheeler segment was adequate at 40-45 days and there were numerous schemes being rolled out by vehicle makers to woo buyers, especially for the entry segment and in the rural and semi-urban areas.

Ninth-generation Toyota Camry breaks cover, becomes pure hybrid

Ninth-generation Toyota Camry breaks cover, becomes pure hybrid

Toyota Camry is one of the cars that have been in business for a long time, since March 1982. Now, the Japanese car manufacturer has taken the wrap off the new generation Camry, which comes as a pure hybrid car. This means the ninth generation Toyota Camry will come with a 2.5-litre inline-four engine paired with two compact electric motors, increasing the range for the midsize sedan as well as minimising its tailpipe emission. What’s more interesting is that being a pure hybrid car, the new generation Camry has essentially turned into a bigger Toyota Prius.

By: Mainak Das
| Updated on: 15 Nov 2023, 11:49 AM

The new Toyota Camry gets a 2.5-litre inline-four engine with two electric motors, churning out a power output between 222 bhp and 229 bhp.

The ninth-generation Camry comes as a heavy refreshed iteration instead of an all-new car. It rides on the same TNGA-K architecture that underpins the eighth-generation model. However, the updated model comes with a reworked suspension with new shocks and revised tuning, which ensure better riding comfort for the occupants. Toyota claims the car offers enhanced responsiveness and agile handling.

Also Read : Toyota Camry hybrid to Ford Mustang special edition: Cars to debut at Los Angeles Auto Show

On the design front, it looks similar to the predecessor, with a large lower front grille and slim LED headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights. The taillights too come with LED treatment. The new Camry gets a wide range of colour options including Ice Cap, Wind Chill Pearl, Celestial Silver Metallic, Underground, Midnight Black Metallic, Supersonic Red, Reservoir Blue, Ocean Gem and Heavy Metal. The last two paint options come as a new addition to the list. The sedan runs on 19-inch wheels.

Moving inside the cabin, the new Camry comes with a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment screen. The top trims get 12.3-inch displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment system. The infotainment system gets wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, in addition to having a wireless charging pad. The top-end trim gets a 10.0-inch heads-up display. There’s also a nine-speaker JBL audio system inside the cabin.

On the safety front, the new Camry gets Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite, which includes a pre-collision system that detects vehicles and pedestrians, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure assist, road sign assist, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The top trims offer an optional Premium Plus Package that adds traffic-jam assist, front cross-traffic alert, lane-change assist, panoramic view monitor, and front and rear parking assist with automatic braking.

On the powertrain front, the new Camry gets a 2.5-litre inline-four engine with two electric motors, churning out a combined output of 222 bhp peak power with front-wheel drive or 229 bhp maximum power with all-wheel drive.

Toyota Camry is not a big seller in India as it once was for the automaker but it retails around 150-200 units every month, which makes it a familiar model in the country. With the growing demand for hybrid models, the new Camry could find a better success rate in India, if Toyota brings it here.

New Bajaj CT 150X price in India, expected launch date

New Bajaj CT 150X price in India, expected launch date

The braced handlebar, hand guards and sump guard mark this out as a member of the CT lineup.

A new Bajaj commuter motorcycle has been spied testing, and a closer look suggests that it could be an upcoming model in the company’s CT lineup of rugged workhorses. While most of the test mule is covered in camouflage, there are certain key details visible which mark it out as a CT model.

For starters, the overall design approach, with a large circular headlight and a tall, wide handlebar, is very similar to the current CT 125X, which we took a spin on last year and were quite impressed by. And then there are a number of smaller elements as well. The presence of hand guards is quite unusual on commuters, but it’s something that we’ve seen Bajaj do on models like the Platina 110 ABS. The same goes for the sump guard and braced handlebar as well, which one doesn’t usually see in this segment, but the CT 125X gets both, as does this test mule. All this further strengthens the theory that what we see here is an early preview of an upcoming CT model.

There are also factors to suggest that this new model will sit above the existing CT 125X, the biggest among them being the more premium split-spoke design for its alloy wheels. It’s also not quite as utilitarian as the smaller 125, missing out on a rear luggage rack. Perhaps this could be a 150cc iteration of the rugged CT platform, called something like the CT 150X. After all, Bajaj recently discontinued the Pulsar P150, meaning that its only 150cc models are the sporty new N150 (which replaces the P150) and the aged Pulsar 150, leaving space for a basic, rugged commuter motorcycle.
