Road accidents in India, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu accident data

Road accidents in India, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu accident data

Data reveals that 33.8 percent of all road accidents resulted in fatalities last year.

Road accidents claimed around 19 lives every hour in the country last year. Total accidents last year were 4,61,312, with fatal accidents amounting to 33.8 percent of that (1,55,781) and 4,43,366 injuries, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

  1. Tamil Nadu recorded highest number of accidents
  2. Uttar Pradesh tops list of fatal accidents

Compared to the previous year, the number of road accidents in 2022 increased by 11.9 percent. Similarly, the number of deaths and injuries also saw a rise of 9.4 percent and 15.3 percent, respectively. These figures highlight the growing concern and urgency to address road safety issues in the country.

Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, emphasised the wider implications of road accidents, stating, “Let us remember that the cost of road accidents is borne not only by the victims and their families but also by the economy as a whole, in terms of untimely deaths, injuries, disabilities and loss of potential income.”

State-wise accidents

Among the states, Tamil Nadu, with 64,105 accidents, recorded the highest number of road accidents in 2022 and accounts for 13.9 percent of the total. Madhya Pradesh followed closely behind with 54,432 accidents, representing 11.8 percent. In terms of fatalities, Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 22,595 deaths (13.4 percent of the total), followed by Tamil Nadu with 17,884 deaths, or around 10 percent of the total fatalities.

The category-wise distribution of accidents and fatalities reveals that the highways, with around 5 percent of total road network in the country, accounted for over 55 percent of total accidents and more than 60 percent of fatalities. Highways accounted for 36.2 percent of total persons killed in National Highways.

The worrying fact is that even with proactive steps taken by the government in the form of implementation of the Motor Vehicle Amendment Act 2019, which came into effect from September 1, 2019, has not helped in bringing down the accident rates. The MVA Act 2019 included provisions like a stiff hike in penalties for traffic violations, electronic monitoring of the same and enhanced penalties for juvenile driving, among others.

Should You Buy Hyundai Venue Petrol Or Diesel?

If you have a budget of about Rs. 13 lakh (ex-showroom), then we’d recommend the Venue SX (O) diesel variants. The price difference of Rs. 74,500 and a km-to-breakeven figure of under 60,000km is negligible since most owners would cover that distance in about 2-3 years of Venue ownership. The diesel variant of the Venue is not only more fuel efficient but could also serve as a solid companion on long drives. The stronger torque output will not only help you maintain good pace on the highways but can also make overtaking slower traffic a breeze.

However, it is important to note that if you buy the Venue diesel variants, you will have to contend with the higher noise, harshness and vibration levels that are an inherent characteristic of diesel engines.

Kia Carens 1.5 Turbo vs Carens 1.4 Turbo: Has fuel efficiency taken a hit?

Kia Carens 1.5 Turbo vs Carens 1.4 Turbo: Has fuel efficiency taken a hit?

Kia made a big splash in the Indian market when they launched the Carens. Generally, people do not want to be seen in an MPV but one thing that you will have to agree on is that MPVs are practical and suit our Indian conditions. This is where the Carens became successful, it retained the practicality of an MPV but had a design inspired by an SUV and an interior design that looks a segment above.

By: Paarth Khatri
| Updated on: 31 Oct 2023, 18:18 PM

The Carens uses SUV-derived styling which makes it quite a handsome-looking MPV.

Kia used to offer the Carens with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, a 1.5-litre diesel engine and a 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine. The manufacturer has now discontinued the 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine and replaced it with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol unit. However, it is still mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The new engine produces 158 bhp of max power and a peak torque output of 253 Nm. When compared, the 1.4-litre unit used to produce 138 bhp and 242 Nm. So, yes the new engine is more powerful. Now, the Indian market is very sensitive to fuel economy so a person might be wondering if a larger engine which is more powerful might be more thirsty.

We recently drove the Carens with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine extensively. During our testing, the Carens’ fuel efficiency hovered around 9 kmpl in the city. However, on the highway, we were able to stretch the fuel efficiency up to 17 kmpl while following the speed limits. Because the gearbox on the Carens turbo is a 7-speed unit, the MPV can cruise at 100 kmph doing just 1,800 rpm. This ensures that the cabin stays silent and is a comfortable place to be in.

Then there is the 1.4-litre turbo petrol which also delivers 9 kmpl in the city but on the highway, it returns around 16 kmpl. So, as it turns out, the 1.5-litre engine is slightly more efficient. This is probably because it has a larger displacement and it does not need to work as hard as the 1.4-litre unit out on the highways. Moreover, what also helps the 1.5-litre engine is the idle start/stop system which turns off the engine whenever the MPV comes to a stop and the restarts as soon as the driver takes his or her foot off the brake.

Maserati Quattroporte luxury saloon celebrates 60th anniversary

Maserati Quattroporte luxury saloon celebrates 60th anniversary

Italian luxury vehicle manufacturer Maserati has displayed the Quattroporte at the 45th Turin Motor Show, one of the biggest motoring events in the world. The luxury saloon completes its 60 years of existence this year, across six generations and more than 75,000 models produced. The car that debuted in the early 1960s, garnered acclaim and inspired successive generations.

By: HT Auto Desk
| Updated on: 31 Oct 2023, 16:38 PM

Over the years, the Maserati Quattroporte has been known as a living room on the move with extremely welcoming spaces.

Over the years, the car has been known as a living room on the move with extremely welcoming spaces, regal allure and an official car. The initial version was able to reach 230 kmph thanks to its eight-cylinder racing-derived engine. In its latest and highest-spec version, the model can reach 0-100 kmph in just 4.5 seconds at a top speed of 366 kmph.

The Quattroporte has made its way to the garages of some thrill-seekers, of kings and princes, and found a limelight in the background of many memorable films. It has been featured in more than 60 productions, to be precise. The saloon has also been photographed on red carpets or while accompanying the highest-ranking officials at solemn events and the significant VIPs in industry.

A mainstay of the automotive landscape in the 20th century, the Quattroporte still remains relevant in the new millennium sixty years later. “Quattroporte is Maserati’s history. A car that tells our story and has prestigiously represented us in the world of saloon cars, for over half a century,” said CEO of Maserati, Davide Grasso.

The latest Quattroporte has taken the stage once again after many years, in its most modern version. It incorporates all the restyling, progress in engineering, changes in corporate structure and yet retains the exclusivity. “A source of pride for us and an acknowledgement of that distinctively Italian character that Maserati has always aimed to export around the world with its creations,” Grasso added.

Mumbai Taxi, kaali peeli Padmini, Padmini Taxi, end of the road

Mumbai Taxi, kaali peeli Padmini, Padmini Taxi, end of the road

As the iconic kaali peeli Padmini bids Mumbai farewell, we look back at what it was like to drive one.

Published On Oct 31, 2023 04:48:00 PM

Think Bombay and the first image that pops up is that of Victorian buildings, red double-decker buses, and a compact Italian sedan from the ‘50s painted in yellow and black. The taxi, of course, is the Fiat 1100 D. A well-rounded family car in its time, later sold here as the Premier Padmini, it was enjoyable to drive in the right conditions, compact in dimension and reasonably practical.

This is probably why it made for such a successful taxi – first with a petrol engine, then a diesel, and finally running on CNG. Produced all the way from 1964 to 2001 (due to the licence raj), it was a car preferred by those who drove themselves and was only outlived by its compatriot, the even longer-running Hindustan Ambassador.

CNG feeder pipe to the carburettor and loose electric wires live in perfect harmony, radiator cap removed to reduce pressure.

Truth be told, it shouldn’t have been very successful as a taxi. It wasn’t as spacious or as comfortable as an HM Ambassador; it couldn’t carry as much luggage; and it didn’t ride quite as well either. Taxi drivers, however, loved it. It was ‘zippy’, compact, and agile and would make most gaps in traffic easily. What really set it apart, especially later in its extended life, was that it cost almost nothing to fix.

While the Fiat 1100 was pretty accomplished in its time and reasonably comfortable to ride in, the taxi fleet got tattier and rattier as the years went by. Soon, most were upwards of 20 years old, and that’s when we at Autocar India decided to drive one.

Steering wheel cover was a standard feature on the taxis.

But why test a 20-or-so-year-old taxi? The need to test the car came about from an argument with one of Mumbai’s finest practitioners of the art of ‘restrained aggression’ – a cab driver. He had tried his best to rear-end me as I stopped for a traffic signal and, to put it mildly, we exchanged a few words. “When have you last driven one of these?” he’d queried, pointing to his bedraggled Padmini. So, in the name of science, humanity and rank stupidity, we got ourselves behind the wheel of an old cab, testing equipment in hand.

Testing Mumbai’s iconic Premier Padmini kaali peeli

Having owned and driven three Fiat 1100s in the past, I thought I would be familiar with the car. Hah, what arrogance! Nothing, not even several taxi rides, with blown tyres, free-floating rear seats or severe alignment problems could have adequately prepared me. It’s no small exaggeration to state that none of the mechanical bits functioned as they should have. None. Okay, maybe the horn worked perfectly, but that was about it.

Start-up is a wheezy crrrrr, crrrr, crrr; hopeless, almost no sign of life. Finally, it starts. Then comes the difficult job of selecting first gear. The gear slots in, but only after grating severely, even with the clutch fully depressed. There was no turbo but, boy-oh-boy, is there lag. The delay can be counted in seconds.

Once the engine begins to rev, it’s maximum noise and no performance. We timed the car from 0-60kph; any more would have been too ambitious. It is slower than we even expect. So we tested it again. And it was slower still; overheating, stuttering and threatening to shut down. Tata Sumos and Mahindra Armadas back in the day were among the slowest cars we’d tested. They took between 11 and 12 seconds to do 0-60kph. This taxi took more than twice that time – 25.23sec.

All tyres have to be bald retreads.

What of stability, grip and braking you ask? Almost all cabs even back in the day ran an assortment of clapped-out tyres, many on their third or fourth retread. A large percentage are slicks, you regularly see others with the ply peeking through and punctures were common. Many cabs were also rotten to the core, their chassis bent and their floor pans drooping.

Once on the move, we discover there’s around 30deg of play on either side when you steer and you need to constantly correct to keep the taxi going straight. We conducted a full brake test – yes, we really were nuts. And here too the distance travelled is twice the worst braking figure we’ve ever recorded.

This taxi is so slow it takes 25sec to go from 0-60kph, twice as slow as the slowest car we’d tested then!

Though Fiat 1100s were accomplished cars in their prime, in the ’60s and ’70s, and performed all manner of roles well when maintained well in private hands, most Padmini taxis even over a decade ago were only fit for the junk heap. Devoid of any directional stability, and in possession of ineffective brakes, they were simply unfit for the road. No ifs, no buts. Just how badly would these cars have fared in a Global NCAP crash test? And how roadworthy or safe are some of our older taxis today? Does anyone care?

Between the 1.5L normal petrol and the turbo diesel, the choice isn’t as straightforward as the km-to-breakeven figure might suggest. It looks like the diesel engine is too expensive and requires over 1 lakh kilometres of driving to recover the higher upfront costs. However, the Carens diesel offers a far better torque output, which will certainly help when hauling a full load of 7 occupants.

Considering the better performance of the diesel engine, we believe that you can buy the Carens diesel even if you intend to drive the car for more than 60,000km. While the cost breakeven will only happen at over 1,00,000km, the performance advantage will pay itself off on a daily basis.

Uno Minda launches new range of side stand sensors and switches for motorcycles

Uno Minda launches new range of side stand sensors and switches for motorcycles

Forgetting to retract the side stand of a motorcycle or a scooter is one of the major reasons for road crashes involving two-wheelers. Leading automotive component manufacturer Uno Minda has introduced a new range of side stand sensors and switches that can mitigate this problem and make riding safer for motorcyclists. The auto component supplier has revealed in an official statement that this range of side stand sensors and switches will be available for motorcyclists as an aftermarket accessory across India.

By: HT Auto Desk
| Updated on: 30 Oct 2023, 17:17 PM

Uno Minda’s new side stand sensors are powered by magnetic sensor technology and ensure enhanced riding safety. (Representational image)

Uno Minda has claimed that the new side stand sensors and switches use advanced magnetic sensor technology. This technology disengages the engine circuit unit when the side stand is in an unsafe position, resulting in no propulsion for the motorcycle. The company claims that this technology ensures that bike riders ride safely. With the magnetic sensor-powered technology, the instrument cluster of the motorcycle gets an LED light indicator, which lights up when the side stand is in an unfavourable position, alerting the rider.

Several two-wheelers in India have been launched already with this technology. However, in those cases, the two-wheelers come equipped with the technology from the manufacturer. Uno Minda’s new range of side stand sensors will enable motorcyclists who have older models to get the same technology, enhancing their safety while riding.

Speaking about the launch, Anand Kumar, Head of Product & Strategy, Aftermarket Domain at Uno Minda Ltd., said that the side stand sensors are important because getting to a corner and having the side stand hit the road can lead to a crash. “We know that bikes generally come with a pre-installed side stand sensor. Side stand sensors are important because getting to a corner and having the side stand hit the road can lead to a crash. Uno Minda side stand sensors have been manufactured to cater to the durability requirements on India’s rocky trails,” he added.

The company has further claimed that the side stand sensor and switches are available across India at leading online and offline retail stores, at a price starting at 172. Also, the side stand sensors and switches come with a two-year warranty from the manufacturing date.

Limited-run Ferrari 499P Modificata sports prototype unveiled

Limited-run Ferrari 499P Modificata sports prototype unveiled

Italian luxury sports car manufacturer Ferrari has unveiled the 499P Modificata sports prototype at the Ferrari World Finals at the Mugello Circuit. The limited-series, non-competitive track use model is a substantially modified version of the 499P that claimed victory in the Centenary edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June this year. The unveiling is a part of celebration for the company’s historic return to the endurance racing in the 2023 season.

By: HT Auto Desk
| Updated on: 30 Oct 2023, 15:32 PM

The limited-run Ferrari 499P Modificata gets specially developed tyres.

Though the 499P Modificata is based on the 499P, it does not have to comply with FIA WEC sporting and technical parameters, which has allowed Ferrari’s engineering team to introduce a number of significant modifications to the model. The company claims that these changes enhance driving thrills and make the car’s performance more accessible.

Also Read : Ferrari 296 Challenge is a track-only monster with 690 bhp. Check it out

Some of these changes include the electric axle and four-wheel drive that can be activated even at low speeds. Then there is the ‘Push to Pass’ function, which offers drivers the option of an extra 120 kW of power. Ferrari has also used specific tyres developed by Pirelli and a complete recalibration of the suspension set-up, electronic controllers and engine mappings.

Elements that the 499P Modificata retains are the cockpit with its single-seater layout and ergonomics of the 499P, providing clients with exactly the same driving experience. The derivation from the 499P makes the model the highest-performance closed-wheel car that Ferrari has ever proposed for non-competitive use on the track.

The 499P Modificata’s hybrid powertrain combines a mid-rear mounted internal combustion V6 with an electric motor on the front axle, churning out max power output of 640 kW. The powertrain comes paired with a 200 kW electric motor with a differential and an Energy Recovery System (ERS) which recharges the battery during deceleration and braking.

The limited-series cars will be fielded in the new Sport Prototipi Clienti programme that will run alongside the existing F1 Clienti programme, from 2024. This will enable 499P Modificata owners to participate in a number of events on international tracks every year.

The price difference between the Sonet normal petrol and Sonet turbo diesel of approximately Rs. 1.63 lakh to Rs. 2.16 lakh is also justified, considering the higher performance of the diesel engine and the additional manufacturing costs for the latter’s turbocharger and intercooler. However, you’ll still need to drive the Sonet diesel about 1.05 lakh km to 1.40 lakh km to recover the higher upfront costs.

From a cost perspective alone, the Sonet diesel doesn’t make for a sensible upgrade over the Sonet normal petrol. However, this diesel engine is more suitable for highway driving than the 1.2L normal petrol engine. Considering the performance advantages, we believe you can buy the Sonet diesel if you intend to drive the car for about 1 lakh kilometres or more.

By using data such as inclination angle and angular velocity, the intension estimation controller performs calculations to estimate the user’s intentions, such as whether the user wants to stay in place, or to move toward which direction and at what speed. Based on the results of the estimate, the stabilization controller performs calculations to control the wheels so that the UNI-ONE does not lean too far and applies feedback control to achieve natural behavior that is neither too fast nor too slow.

Six decades on, the trip ends for Mumbai’s iconic ‘Premier Padmini’ taxis

Six decades on, the trip ends for Mumbai’s iconic ‘Premier Padmini’ taxis

Giving way to newer models and app-based cab services, these black-and-yellow taxis will now bow out from Mumbai’s streets, following the path of retirement recently taken by the BEST’s legendary red double-decker diesel buses.

A transport department official said the last Premier Padmini was registered as a black-and-yellow taxi at the Tardeo RTO, which has jurisdiction over the island city of Mumbai, on October 29, 2003. As the age limit for cabs in the city is 20 years, Mumbai officially won’t have a Premier Padmini taxi from Monday onwards.

“Yeh Mumbai ki shaan hai aur hamari jaan hai (it is the pride of Mumbai and life of mine),” said Prabhadevi resident Abdul Kareem Karsekar, who owns the last registered Premier Padmini taxi of Mumbai, bearing registration number MH-01-JA-2556.

This transition comes shortly after the phasing out of the last iconic diesel-powered double-decker buses in the fleet of public transporter Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking due to the end of their 15-year codal life.

The retirement of two once-ubiquitous and crucial modes of public carriers in a matter of weeks has left Mumbai’s transportation enthusiasts heavy-hearted, with some demanding that at least one ‘Premier Padmini’ be preserved on the road or in a museum.

Classic car enthusiast Daniel Sequeira said these sturdy cabs have been a part of the city’s landscape for more than five decades and hold sentimental value for several generations.

“In the city, we are preserving several old monuments. Similar to those, we also need to preserve these iconic cabs, which are living monuments,” said Sequeira, who has added an old taxi mechanical fare meter to his collection due to his love for these cabs.

A few years ago, the Mumbai Taximen’s Union, one of the biggest taxi driver unions in the city, had petitioned the government to preserve at least one kaali-peeli, but without any success.

Pradeep Palav, a Parel resident and art lover, said nowadays Premier Padmini taxis can only be seen in murals on walls in Mumbai. Though it has slowly vanished, it has conquered a place in people’s imagination and hearts, he said.

“Presently, we have scores of car models as taxis, but when it comes to painting a taxi only the black-and-yellow Premier Padmini pops up in our mind, as it ruled Mumbai’s streets for almost five decades and gave a face or identity to the city’s taxis,” Palav said.

Mumbai now has over 40,000 black-and-yellow cabs, though, in the late ’90s, it had about 63,000 of them, including the air-conditioned “cool cabs” with their distinctive ‘blue and silver’ colour scheme.

AL Quadros, general secretary of the Mumbai Taximens Union, recalled that Premier Padmini’s journey as a taxi started in 1964 with the model ‘Fiat-1100 Delight’, a powerful 1200-cc car with a steering-mounted gear shifter. It was small compared to “big taxis” like the Plymouth, Landmaster, Dodge, and Fiat 1100, called by locals as ‘dukkar Fiat’.

In the 1970s, the model was rebranded as “Premier President” and subsequently as “Premier Padmini”, after the legendary Indian queen Padmini. Thereafter, the car manufactured by Premier Automobile Limit (PAL) never went through a name change until its production stopped in 2001, he said.

Some 100-125 Premier Padmini taxis remained unregistered due to lack of availability of spare parts or other reasons, for a long time after production ceased. However, in 2003, car dealers managed to secure their registration and the last taxi registered then will now be scrapped, Quadros said.

In the ’60s, Mumbai and Kolkata would get 25-30 Fiat-1100D or Ambassador cars as taxis every second month, he said.

“The government had set the quota for two cities, but cabbies of Mumbai were reluctant to buy Ambassador and the same was the case with Fiat in Kolkata. Therefore, the union got the quota exchanged with Kolkata and consequently, Mumbai got only Fiat taxis,” Quadros said.

The octogenarian union leader said that Premier Padmini’s number was at its peak in the ’90s, but a big chunk of them went off the roads after the Maharashtra government set a 25-year age limit for cabs in 2008 and then brought it down to 20 years in 2013.

“Premier Padminis were popular among cabbies due to their smaller size, reliable engines, easy maintenance, and comfortable interiors, but after their production stopped, unavailability of spare parts became the main problem,” he said.

Cabbies then started adopting various hatchback models of Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai, he added.

Premier Padmini cabs were not just a mode of daily commute, but also a part of Mumbai’s cultural heritage as they featured in numerous Bollywood movies, including ‘Taxi No. 9211’, ‘Khaali-Peeli’, and ‘Aa Ab Laut Chale’. In many old Bollywood films, Premier Padmini cars and double-decker buses would be shown at the beginning to establish Mumbai.

Bharat Gothoskar, a city chronicler and founder of the KHAKI Heritage Foundation, said Mumbai’s taxis are yellow and black in colour due to VB Gandhi, a freedom fighter who later became an MP.

Gandhi had recommended to former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru that the upper part of the cabs should be painted yellow so that they can be spotted from a distance and the lower part black to hide any stains, said Gothoskar.

“Just after independence, there were many car models in India but later it was restricted to just two – Premier Padmini and Ambassador. Probably the tendency of Mumbaikars is to optimise space and hence the taxi drivers in the city would have preferred the Padmini as the kaali-peeli,” he said.

Karsekar, who owns the last Premier Padmini taxi of Mumbai, said it is difficult to maintain the vehicle due unavailability of spare parts, but he still wants to preserve his cab at own expense, if the government permits.

Karsekar, who has been driving taxis since 1988 and once owned seven Premier Padminis, said that even though his cab is old, people still admire it and prefer it over modern alternatives for the nostalgic experience they derive out of it.

“Once I was in Dadar near Babubhai Bhavanji. A well-dressed individual in a high-end car hailed my cab, directing his driver to follow us. When I inquired why he did so, he said he wanted to savour the experience of this iconic ride, which he might not get in future,” said Karsekar.

He shared a few more heartwarming stories of passengers choosing to travel in his cab, keen to preserve memories of the iconic taxis.

Karsekar said recently a man from South India flagged down his taxi and travelled from Dadar to Tata Mill, where he brought out his octogenarian parents and captured their photographs with the cab. He then handed 500 to Karsekar as a tip.

Raees Ahmed, another taxi driver, whose Premier Padmini recently got age-barred, said he drove the model for 15 years and only because of it he could run his house and complete the education of his brothers and now his kids.

Thai MotoGP results: Jorge Martin wins to reduce Francesco Bagnaia’s title lead

Thai MotoGP results: Jorge Martin wins to reduce Francesco Bagnaia’s title lead

Bagnaia promoted to second after Binder was handed a penalty for exceeding track limits.

Just a week after he missed out on the podium in Australia, Jorge Martin took a hard-fought victory in the 2023 Thai GP. Red Bull KTM’s Brad Binder finished second on road, but he exceeded lap limits which meant he had to drop down to third. Factory Ducati rider and reigning world champion Francesco Bagnaia was promoted to second.

  1. Just thirteen points separate Martin and Bagnaia
  2. Martin won both Sprint and main races this weekend

Battle for the podium

Martin led for much of the Thai GP, but on a few occasions Binder was able to overtake him, although he couldn’t make it stick. Bagnaia had a poor start and at one point during the race was in eighth place. However, he was able to make his way through the field in due course and was running fourth behind Alex Marquez, when the Gresini Ducati rider crashed out.

Quartararo, Marquez finish in the top 7

Factory Yamaha rider Fabio Quartararo, who qualified tenth, claimed he had a “good feeling” on the bike this weekend and was able to replicate this success out on the track. He finished the main race in sixth place. Repsol Honda rider Marc Marquez (who is moving to Gresini Ducati next year) took the chequered flag in seventh place, after battling with Quartararo for much of the race. In 2019, Marquez took his eighth world title while battling with Fabio at this very circuit.

2023 MotoGP world championship standings

Despite wins in both the Sprint and feature-length races Jorge Martin is still thirteen points adrift of championship leader, Francesco Bagnaia. Bagnaia’s VR46 academy stablemate Marco Bezzecchi is third in the overall standings.

MotoGP heads to Malaysia in two weeks’ time, so keep watching this space for the latest developments.

Suzuki to focus on vehicles with biogas fuel for India, showcases WagonR CBG

Suzuki to focus on vehicles with biogas fuel for India, showcases WagonR CBG

Japanese auto giant Suzuki has showcased a new WagonR at the Japan Auto Show which is powered by compressed biogas, or CBG. First showcased at the G7 Summit in Hiroshima in May this year, the WagonR CBG highlights the Japanese carmaker’s intention of using alternative energy, other than electricity, to power vehicles while attaining carbon neutrality by ditching petrol or diesel. Toshihiro Suzuki, CEO of Suzuki Motor Corporation, highlighted the usefulness of cow manures to produce biogas as alternative fuel. He said India could play a key role in making Compressed Biogas mainstream.

Suzuki WagonR powered by compressed biogas, or CBG, for India is displayed at the Japan Auto Show on October 26, in Tokyo. (AP)

Compressed Biogas (CBG) is made from decomposed organic waste like agricultural items, cow manure and even. The decomposed waste is refined through a process to reduce carbon dioxide and increase the methane content in the fuel. The process is somewhat similar to the way Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is made. The difference is that for CNG, the source of the fuel is natural gas.

During his speech at the Japan Auto Show this week, Toshihiro Suzuki said massive amount of cow manure is potentially a gold mine to generate Compressed Biogas. He said, “It is said that there are about 300 million cows in India. Do you all know? One day’s worth of cow dung from 10 cows is enough fuel to power one car for one day. From this basic point of view, we have developed the WagonR that runs on purified biogas.”

Suzuki also said that to achieve true carbon neutrality, the auto industry should look beyond electric vehicles and venture into alternative fuel like CNG and CBG. Suzuki’s plans to use CBG as alternative fuel for its vehicles is not new. The carmaker had earlier signed a deal with Banas Dairy and the National Dairy Development Board to setup a biogas production plant in Gujarat. In the next three years, Suzuki aims to set up around four biogas facilities at an investment of up to 230 crore.

The CBG version of the WagonR hatchback is unlikely to hit Indian shores anytime soon. Maruti Suzuki sells the CNG version of the hatchback besides the regular petrol version. There are also talks of an electric avatar of the boxy WagonR in near future.

With pollution spiked, Delhi to see return of Red Light on, Gaadi Off campaign

With pollution spiked, Delhi to see return of Red Light on, Gaadi Off campaign

Delhi is all set to see the return of ‘Red Light on, Gaadi Off’ campaign this season as pollution level in the national capital continues to increase ahead of Diwali festival. Gopal Rai, Environment Minister of Delhi said that the state government is planning to bring back the campaign that aims to reduce vehicular pollution in the national capital region. Delhi and the neighbouring region have already implemented the Graded Response Action Plan or GRAP to reduce polluting vehicles from plying in the city. The government plans stricter action in coming days to keep pollution under check.

The ‘Red Light on, Gaadi Off’ campaign was first launched in 2020 to reduce vehicular pollution as part of the15-point action plan to curb air pollution in Delhi. Earlier, before Covid years, Delhi government resorted to odd-even scheme under which private vehicles with registration plates ending in odd and even numbers were allowed to ply on every alternate days to reduce pollution.

Speaking on bringing back the ‘Red Light on, Gaadi Off’ campaign, Gopal Rai said, “One of the major causes of pollution in the national capital is traffic. To reduce the overall pollution in Delhi, we’ve had to decrease the vehicle pollution. Thus, we are introducing a ‘Red Light on, Gaadi Off’ campaign to create awareness among the public to curb vehicle pollution. In the next phase of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), eco-friendly bus service will be started. The work to introduce this bus service has already begun.”

The ‘Red Light on, Gaadi Off’ campaign promotes saving precious fuel as well as keep pollution levels in check. Drivers are encouraged to turn off their engines while waiting at traffic signals.

The national capital recorded ‘poor’ air quality on Thursday with the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 256. According to SAFAR-India, the air quality around Delhi University recorded ‘very poor’ clocking 316 AQI in the morning. Noida, Delhi’s neighbouring satellite city, recorded ‘poor’ air quality with AQI hovering at 269 while Gurugram was ‘moderate’ at 176 AQI.
