Maserati MCXtrema officially unveiled with 720 bhp, limited to just 62 units

Maserati has officially unveiled the MCXtrema at 2023 Monterey Car Week. Previously, the supercar was known as Project24. The MCXtrema is based on the MC12 but it is now a track-only vehicle which means that it is not road-legal. Only 62 units of the MCXtrema will be made and they are already sold out.

Maserati MCXtrema is based on the MC12. The MCXtrema is not road legal.

Powering this beast is the same 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine. It puts out 720 bhp of max power at 7,500 rpm and a peak torque output of 730 Nm at just 3,000 rpm. When compared to the MC12, Maserati was able to squeeze 108 bhp more.

To make more power, Maserati used new turbochargers and a racing exhaust along with other tweaks. The gearbox on duty is a six-speed sequential racing gearbox with a racing clutch and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The power is transferred only to the rear wheels.

At 1,300 kg dry, the MCXtrema is quite light. Maserati is using a carbon fibre monocoque chassis and 18-inch forged alloy wheels aluminium rims with centre lock fixing which helps in reducing weight. The body is made up of lightweight full-composite while the underfloor is fully closed with carbon fibre. The side windows and the windscreen is made up of polycarbonate.

As it is a ‘race car’, there is a safety roll cage and a 120-litre fuel tank, both of which are FIA-homologated. Apart from this, there is also an air jack system. The tyres are either racing slicks or wet ones.

Braking duties are done by ventilated carbon fibre brakes which come with adjustable racing ABS. Suspension duties are performed by double wishbone suspension in the front as well as at the rear. There are adjustable anti-roll bars and adjustable dampers on offer as well. The bucket racing seat is fixed and comes with four-point mounting. It is the steering column and the pedal box that can be adjusted.

Ford unveils the fastest Mustang ever as a street-legal 800-bhp supercar

US auto giant Ford Motor has unveiled its Mustang GTD, a limited version model, ahead of the Monterey Car Week in California, US. Designed for racing, this is the fastest Mustang ever produced by the carmaker from Dearborn. It is Ford Motor’s first real swing at some of the famous supercars with racing credentials that can match others. The new Mustang is inspired by the carmaker’s Mustang GT3 racing car which will take part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2024.

Ford Motor has unveiled a new performance version of its iconic Mustang which is inspired by its GT3 racing car.

The design of the Ford Mustang GTD is the most aggressive among the current generation of Mustang cars. The grille and the air intakes are large with a sporty bumper and hydraulically controlled front wings. The aggressive aerodynamic bodykit offers front splitter, a new hood, wider fenders with air vents, new side skirts, a new diffuser and a huge spoiler that also has a DRS system.

Ford has used a large amount of carbon fiber in the bodywork of the Mustang GTD to reduce weight. The engineers have used carbon-ceramic braking system from Brembo and forged aluminium to shape the 20-inch wheels. The tyres have a tread of 325 mm in front and 345 mm in the rear.

Under the hood, the Mustang GTD comes with a supercharged 5.2-litre V8 engine, which Ford says can roar up to 800 bhp. The engine comes mated to a 8-speed dual-clutch transmission unit. The Mustang GTD is also the first road-going Mustang to feature a dry-sump engine oil system.

The interior of the Mustang GTD also reflects its sporty character. The driver and front passenger get Recaro seats optimised for track use. The gears are changed with 3D printed titanium paddles on the steering wheel. The drive mode selector knob and nameplate are also made of titanium. The alloy has been borrowed from Lockheed Martin F-22 titanium components. At the rear, the Mustang GTD does not offer any seats, but has space for luggage.

The Ford Mustang GTD will be a limited edition model. The US carmaker is likely to launch the Mustang GTD for domestic markets by the end of 2024 or beginning of 2025.

GIIAS 2023: Sportier new-gen Honda WR-V Racer edition showcased in Indonesia

GIIAS 2023: Sportier new-gen Honda WR-V Racer edition showcased in Indonesia

The second-generation Honda WR-V was launched in Indonesia last year and the Japanese automaker has now showcased the new WR-V Racer edition at the 2023 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). The special Honda WR-V Racer edition brings sportier upgrades to the subcompact SUV and is a result of a collaboration between Honda Indonesia and local tuning firm “The Elite Indonesia.” The end result is a hot SUV ready to scorch the streets.

By: HT Auto Desk
| Updated on: 17 Aug 2023, 18:12 PM

The Honda WR-V Racer edition is a one-off creation and brings sporty look to the subcompact SUV

The Honda WR-V Racer edition is based on the top RS trim. It gets lowered coil spring suspension and new dark-finished 17-inch alloy wheels shod in wider and low-profile Michelin Primacy 4 tyres. The WR-V Racer also gets a new dark red paint scheme with a contrast black roof, while there’s a custom body kit added to give it an aggressive stance.

The body kit includes a lip on the front bumper, side skirts, and rear diffuser, all of which reduce the ground clearance even further. The chrome elements on the exterior have also been given a matte black finish, while you get a white and grey decal running across the doors with the “WR-V” branding. The rear sports a large wing and dual exhaust pipes to complete the look.

Speaking on the special build, Yusak Billy, Sales & Marketing and After Sales Director – PT Honda Prospect Motor said, “Each Honda product line has a sporty DNA, especially for our Small SUV products such as the Honda WR-V. We are presenting a modified form of collaboration for the Honda WR-V RS with The Elite to give a sporty impression to visitors, especially our consumers, where this product can also be the choice of young people and active young families.”

Honda has not revealed if the WR-V Racer has received any performance enhancements. In its stock guise, the subcompact SUV gets the familiar 1.5-litre naturally aspirated i-VTEC petrol engine tuned for 118 bhp and 145 Nm of peak torque. The motor is paired with a CVT automatic gearbox. Power goes to only the front wheels on this urban SUV.

The WR-V Racer edition will hopefully entice younger buyers into Honda dealerships, which remains the target audience for the model. It’s unlikely that the Racer edition will make it to production even in limited numbers. Instead, the Indonesian buyers will have to make do with the WR-V RS variant that gets a few visual enhancements. That said, this should give several prospective ideas related to upgrades and personalisation after purchase.

The made-in-India Citroen C3 Aircross automatic was showcased at the Indonesia International Auto Show 2023 and will be launched in a few weeks

The Citroen C3 Aircross for Indonesia gets a 6-speed torque converter as opposed to the 5-speed manual transmission seen on the India-spec model. The compact SUV also draws power from the same 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine tuned for 108 bhp, but peak torque is higher at 205 Nm for Indonesia, 15 Nm more than the Indian version. Citroen Indonesia promises a fuel efficiency figure of 17.5 kmpl on the petrol automatic version, as opposed to 18.5 kmpl claimed on the India-spec manual version.

The automatic transmission has been missing from Citroen’s lineup for the Indian market, both on the C3 hatchback and the upcoming C3 Aircross SUV. The 6-speed torque converter is expected to be sold in India as well at a later date on both of these models that share the same underpinnings. The 6-speed transmission is reportedly being sourced from Aisin.

With the C3 Aircross scheduled for launch in September this year, there’s a good chance the automatic version will arrive in the Indian market by the end of this year. Citroen India is also expected to bring the C3 hatchback automatic by the end of 2023 or sometime in early 2024. Considering the C3 Aircross will be sold in a single variant with either five or seven-seater options, the automatic transmission option will bring more choices for customers, not to forget sheer convenience for those looking for a city-friendly option.

Apart from the automatic transmission and more torque, the Citroen C3 Aircross for Indonesia gets different dual-tone grey and black seat upholstery. All the other features are being carried over as seen on the Indian model. Expect prices for the Citroen C3 Aircross to start from around 9 lakh, going up to 14 lakh (ex-showroom). Bookings for the new SUV will begin soon after prices are announced, while deliveries are set to commence in October.

Bugatti Chiron Super Sport Golden Era is masterpiece of hand-crafted luxury

Bugatti Chiron Super Sport Golden Era is masterpiece of hand-crafted luxury

Bugatti has unveiled a new special edition of the Chiron Super Sport. It is called ‘Golden Era’ and is a one-off project for the manufacturer. The request came from a Bugatti collector with a deep appreciation for Bugatti history and the intricate engineering of the W16 engine. He chose Chiron Super Sport to celebrate the combustion engine design. He also wanted to pay homage to the history that had led to the creation of this engine.

Bugatti will only make one unit of Chiron Super Sport Golden Era.

So, Bugatti back through its history and found several landmark moments. They chose some icons that defined the Bugatti brand. The concept featured 45 sketches of the brand’s icons that would be hand-drawn directly onto the car itself. The owner immediately fell in love with the idea. However, it took a lot of patience and craftsmanship.

The special edition boasts 26 hand-drawn sketches on the passenger side. Some of them are the Type 41 Royale – lauded as the most luxurious car when revealed in 1926 – and the Type 57 SC Atlantic, widely regarded as the most beautiful car ever designed. On the driver’s side, there are 19 sketches which consist of EB110, Veyron and Chiron. New methods and processes were crafted to ensure that these details would stand the test of time. They sit proudly within the interior including subtle ‘Golden Era’ stitching and hand-written ‘One-of-One’ motifs.

Bugatti had to create a brand-new technique to achieve the desired finish for the exterior artwork. In all, this stage of the process took more than 400 hours because it was so complex. But the designers didn’t stop there. They also customized the interior. On each of the door panels, three Bugatti icons were hand-applied with a bespoke paint and fine paint brush that would allow one of the design team to draw directly onto the leather.

Urban Cruiser Taisor nameplate trademarked in India. Is this Toyota’s Fronx-based SUV?

Urban Cruiser Taisor nameplate trademarked in India. Is this Toyota’s Fronx-based SUV?

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has trademarked the ‘Urban Cruiser Taisor’ nameplate in India and it’s quite likely that this will be the name of the automaker’s upcoming subcompact SUV. The automaker exited the subcompact SUV space with the discontinuation of the Urban Cruiser (badge-engineered Vitara Brezza) and will re-enter with another badge-engineered Maruti, the Fronx. This is expected to be the brand’s next launch after the Toyota Rumion.

By: Sameer Fayaz Contractor
| Updated on: 11 Aug 2023, 12:20 PM

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor name has been trademarked, which stems the possibility of a new subcompact SUV based on the Maruti Suzuki Fronx

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx shares its underpinnings with the new generation Baleno but gets a more butch look inspired by the Grand Vitara. It won’t be surprising if Toyota opts for a styling similar to its Urban Cruiser Hyryder. What we do know is that the Fronx and the upcoming Taisor are likely to share most components, as badge-engineered models tend to be. Expect to see a revised grille, tailgate, bumpers, and new alloys among subtle styling updates to make it visually different from the Maruti Suzuki Fronx.

The cabin will largely retain the same design and equipment levels with minor tweaks including new upholstery, colours and more. The Fronx is fairly loaded with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 360-degree camera, a head-up display, wireless charging and more.

The Fronx is offered with two engine options including the 1.0-litre BoosterJet turbo petrol with 99 bhp and 147 Nm of peak torque, as well as the more popular 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol with 88 bhp. It’s unclear as to which engine option will be offered on Taisor. Both engines are paired with a 5-speed manual. Automatic transmission options include a 6-speed torque converter on the turbo petrol, whereas the 1.2 NA uses a more cost-effective 5-speed AMT.

If Toyota opts to retail the turbo petrol engine, it will be a first for the automaker in India. That said, a CNG variant is also likely to join the stable considering it’s already available on the Fronx. The Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor is expected to arrive around the festive period this year. But before that, the automaker is gearing up to introduce the Rumion, which is another badge-engineered offering based on the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. The company will also begin deliveries of the Vellfire from November onwards.

BMW pulls plug on the 6 Series Gran Turismo, will be officially dead by November

BMW pulls plug on the 6 Series Gran Turismo, will be officially dead by November

BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is all set to meet the end of the road later this year, as the German luxury car brand is ready to pull the plug on this model by November 2023. Launched in 2017, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo has never been a market success for the automaker. BMW updated the 6 Series Gran Turismo back in 2021 and introduced an electrified powertrain to the car. The car has not been able to register many sales to private customers and has mostly been used as an airport and hotel shuttle in some European countries, which prompted the company to discontinue this model, reports BimmerToday.

BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo will go out of sale by November 2023.

While the report of the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo has been leaked unofficially, the automaker remains tight-lipped about the decision. The report claims that the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo will remain in production for a few more months before the 6 Series moniker is retired. The car brand has not seen satisfactory demand for the car. The report claims that it sold only 509 units in Germany in 2022, which marks an absurdly low number. Halfway through 2023, the 6 Series GT has sold just 237 units in the company’s home country, becoming the worst performer of the automaker.

BMW sells the 6 Series Gran Turismo in India as well. Powered by a diesel engine, the car is available at a starting price of 72.50 lakh (ex-showroom), in India. As of now, the car is available on the German auto giant’s website.

Meanwhile, BMW India has registered its best-ever half-year and quarterly sales during January-June and April-June periods this year, respectively. The automaker claimed that BMW and Mini together have sold 5,867 cars combined between January and June this year. The company also said that its flagship models witnessed the highest demand.

New-gen Mercedes-Benz GLC: What’s changed on brand’s bestselling SUV?

Mercedes-Benz has revealed the new-generation GLC for the Indian market and the brand’s bestselling SUV has witnessed a complete overhaul over its predecessor. The new offering is larger, more luxurious and packs updated powertrain options as well. Here’s a more detailed look at what we can expect from the second generation Mercedes-Benz GLC.

| Updated on: 05 Aug 2023, 12:16 PM

The 2023 GLC is now larger, more luxurious and loaded with features.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC will be offered with the familiar 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines paired with a mild-hybrid motor. The updated engines are paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission with All -Wheel Drive (AWD) as standard. The petrol unit develops 254 bhp and 400 Nm of peak torque, while the diesel churns out 194 bhp and 400 Nm of peak torque. The mild-hybrid further gives an additional boost of 200 Nm that helps improve low-end acceleration and overall fuel efficiency.

The cabin has seen a major upgrade and mimics that of the new-generation C-Class. This includes the new floating digital instrument console and the larger, vertically-stacked 11.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The unit runs the latest MBUX UI and gets a host of features including navigation, voice command, customisation options, along with telematics and more. The SUV is also loaded on the feature front with premium leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, Burmester sound system, three-spoke multi-function steering wheel, park assist and more.

On the design front, the second generation Mercedes-Benz GLC gets evolutionary styling. It’s still recognisable but looks bolder with cleaner lines all over. The SUV is also roomier with better legroom and shoulder room. It continues to be a five-seater and is positioned above the GLB in the brand’s lineup.

The compact luxury SUV will be available in two variants at the time of the launch – 300 4MATIC and 220d 4MATIC. The new GLC will compete with the Range Rover Evoque, BMW X3, Audi Q5 and the Volvo XC60 in the segment. Do check out the new GLC’s review coming soon.

Tata Tiago, Tigor iCNG updated with twin-cylinder tech. Check out prices

Tata Motors has launched the Tiago and Tigor iCNG variants in the country with its new twin-cylinder technology. The updated Tata Tiago iCNG is priced from 6.55 lakh, going up to 8.10 lakh for the XZ NRG CNG variant. Meanwhile, the Tata Tigor CNG is now priced from 7.10 lakh, going up to 8.95 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi. The same twin-cylinder CNG tech has also been introduced on the Tata Punch micro SUV.

The Tata Tiago CNG and Tigor CNG now get twin CNG cylinders with a capacity of 70 litres, the highest in the segment

The automaker introduced the new tech on the Altroz earlier this year and the cleverly factory-fitted CNG tanks liberate more room for practical cargo capacity. Tata’s twin-cylinder tech places two fuel tanks of a capacity of 70 litres combined in place of the spare wheel under the cargo area. This ensures there’s usable space to keep a suitcase, bags and more. The spare wheel is moved to the rear underbelly of the car on either vehicle.

Commenting on the launch, Vinay Pant, Head-Marketing, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, said, “Building further on our success with the Altroz iCNG, and to make the CNG segment even more hotly contested, we are excited to introduce the twin-cylinder technology in not just one but three products today – the Tiago, Tigor and the much awaited and loved subcompact SUV, the Tata Punch. I am confident that these introductions put together will make our CNG lineup appealing, holistic, and stronger than ever.”

The Tata Tiago and Tigor CNG draw power from the 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine. The motor has been detuned to produce 76 bhp and 97 Nm of peak torque on the CNG-powered version, while paired with only a 5-speed manual gearbox. Offered in multiple variants, the Tiago and Tigor CNG options also boast decent features when compared to their rivals – Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Hyundai Aura.

The Tata Tiago and Tigor iCNG were launched in January 2022 and the latest update makes the models more practical. The company says it has sold over 50,000 units of the CNG versions since the launch, helping the automaker command a 16 per cent market share in the overall CNG segment. Individually too, the CNG variants contribute 20 per cent to the Tiago’s overall volumes, 55 per cent to the Tigor and 40 per cent to the Altroz. Tata’s CNG range is available for private buyers though and not for commercial operators. Deliveries for the new updated CNG lineup should begin in a few days from now.
