Bye FASTag, hi GPS-based toll collection: Is India ready?

Bye FASTag, hi GPS-based toll collection: Is India ready?

  • The Indian government is planning to introduce a GPS-based toll collection system across the country, replacing the current FASTag technology.
The Indian government is planning to introduce a GPS-based toll collection system across the country, replacing the current FASTag technology. (AP)

Ever since Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari announced that the government is planning to deploy a Global Positioning System (GPS) based toll collection system across India, the new technology has been making headlines. With this strategy, the government is planning to remove all the toll plazas or toll collection booths and enable GPS-based toll collection. This comes after FASTag became mandatory across India just a few years ago for all four-wheeled vehicles to enable automatic deduction of toll charges through Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.

Under the FASTag regime, the vehicles come with a FASTag chip-based sticker positioned on the windshield of the vehicle. When the vehicle passes through the toll gate, a scanner scans the FASTag sticker and deducts the specific amount automatically. This system has significantly reduced the waiting time at the toll plaza for vehicles compared to the era when toll charges were paid through cash or card. Eventually, this technology has resulted in reduced travelling time for the vehicles, better transparency and lower congestion at toll plazas. Now, the government is aiming to bring a more updated technology for this function, which will work as a GPS-based system.

(To buy a new FASTag, click here)

How GPS-based toll collection will work?

Just like the FASTag-based toll collection requires all vehicles to have a FASTag, the GPS-based toll collection system will make it necessary for all vehicles to have a GPS. The government plans to deploy this technology through a microcontroller with 3G and GPS connectivity. This will allow the NHAi or the regulatory agency to track the vehicle’s route through the GPS device onboard the car. It will transmit the data of how many toll roads the vehicles are taking, and how many toll gates the vehicles are passing through. Based on that, the estimated toll tax will be charged by the vehicle owner.

Also Read : How to buy and activate FASTag online: Key steps

Difference between FASTag and GPS-based toll collection

FASTag uses RFID technology for automatic deduction of toll tax bringing convenience and transparency. It is like a wallet that allows the system to deduct the toll charges automatically whenever the vehicle passes through the toll plaza. The FASTag account is directly linked to the bank account or wallet.

On the other hand, the GPS-based toll collection will differ from FASTag. It will track the vehicle throughout the journey, which brings the concern related to privacy, as the system will be able to monitor the vehicle all along. The system will be vigilant of vehicle movement and collect toll tax through GPS.

Renault Duster’s base variant may ditch touchscreen. Here’s reason to think so

Renault Duster’s base variant may ditch touchscreen. Here’s reason to think so

The base variant of Dacia Duster SUV, which has influenced the upcoming new generation Renault Duster, has ditched the touchscreen infotainment system

The base variant of the Dacia Duster SUV, which has influenced the upcoming new generation Renault Duster, has ditched the touchscreen infotainment system.

Before the launch of the Renault Kwid, the Renault Duster SUV remained one of the most successful cars from the French auto giant in the Indian market. Now, the car manufacturer is aiming to bring back the SUV to India again in late 2024. Renault has already unveiled the SUV a few months back. Based on the previously unveiled Dacia Duster, the new generation Renault Duster looks bolder than the model used to be sold in India.

Now, a new image has surfaced revealing the interior of the Dacia Duster’s base variant, which possibly previews the interior of the upcoming Renault Duster’s base variant as well. As it appears, the base variant of the SUV would miss out on a touchscreen infotainment system. However, there is a panel where the consumers can install a touchscreen infotainment unit from aftermarket. Overall, the base variant of the Renault SUV may look spartan in terms of distal interfaces.

Watch: 2024 Renault Duster breaks cover with bolder design, new engine

Speaking of the styling and features, the three-spoke multifunction steering wheel would come featuring a new and chunky look. The steering may come similar to the Dacia Duster one and sport a flat vibe at the top and bottom, while it would carry a plethora of control buttons. While the base variant may miss out on the touchscreen infotainment system, it would come with a fully digital instrument cluster. Among other features on the dashboard, there would be sharp-looking AC vents with horizontal slats and rotary dials for climate control functions at the centre console.

Interestingly, the rise of touch-sensitive digital interfaces and capacitive touchpad screens in modern cars has become a safety concern. The drivers tend to take their eyes off the road to navigate through the menus on the touchscreen to access various features. This is a major issue the Euro NCAP has recently highlighted. Hence, the safety rating agency has stated that from 2026, it will penalize automakers by lowering the safety rating of a car that doesn’t have physical control buttons for certain functions.

While the entry-level variants of many cars often come sans any touchscreen infotainment systems, in the last few years, even affordable small cars come with such units. The upcoming Renault Duster will not come as an affordable model. Instead, it would be positioned above the Kiger as an upmarket SUV. Hence it would be interesting to see if Renault India introduces the touchscreen infotainment system in the base variant of the car or continues with the spartan look visible in the Dacia Duster’s base variant.

  • The 2025 Nissan GT-R has been revealed for Japanese markets and while not officially confirmed, this could be the last production model of the GT-R.
The 2025 Nissan GT-R could be driving into the sunset marking the end of an era

The Nissan GT-R is every bit of a cult and the longest of the modern era of supercars to stay in production. However, it now seems Nissan is ready to draw the curtains on its halo offering. The company has revealed the 2025 GT-R for Japanese markets and while it’s not officially confirmed, this could be the last production model of the GT-R.

The 2025 Nissan GT-R arrives with minimal changes. The car gains a new Blue Heaven interior upholstery, while there’s a new T-Spec and Track Edition engineered by the brand’s performance division NISMO. Upgrades include new weight-balanced piston rings, connecting rods, and crankshafts. The Track Edition also gets aluminium certification plates and gold-coloured number plates in the engine bay.

Furthermore, Nissan says the 2025 GT-R will be sold in limited numbers although it does not suggest the number of units that will be sold. Another report suggests that the automaker has capped production to 1,500 units for the supercar.

Fondly called the Godzilla, the 2025 GT-R could be the last time we see the model roll off the production line. The R25 GT-R entered production in December 2007, although development started back in 2000. The automaker released two concepts, one in 2001 at the Tokyo Motor Show and the GT-R Proto at the same event in 2005.

The Nissan GT-R is a supercar icon and could come back as an all-electric offering

We hope Nissan gives the GT-R a bigger and brighter send-off to the icon that has been an integral part of the automotive culture globally. Meanwhile, Nissan is said to be working on an all-electric GT-R that could arrive by the end of this decade. The automaker also showcased the Hyper Force concept at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show hinting at the same.

Nissan GT-R’s last hurrah: Limited edition 2025 model to be announced

Nissan GT-R’s last hurrah: Limited edition 2025 model to be announced

In a bittersweet finale, Nissan prepares to bid farewell to its iconic GT-R with a final limited-edition model for the 2025 model year. Insider report

In a bittersweet finale, Nissan prepares to bid farewell to its iconic GT-R with a final limited-edition model for the 2025 model year. Insider reports hint at an exclusive release of only 1,500 units, with a portion of these expected to be high-performance Nismo models.

The Nissan GT-R, an icon in the world of supercars, is gearing up for its swan song with a final limited-edition model slated for the 2025 model year. Despite being on the scene since 2007, the R35 generation GT-R has maintained its status as a supercar slayer, thanks to its impressive performance figures.

According to insider sources cited by Japanese publication Mag X, Nissan is set to unveil the final 2025 model year GT-R on March 14. Reports suggest that only 1,500 units will be produced, with approximately 300 of them expected to be Nismo models. However, it remains unclear whether these limited editions will be exclusive to the Japanese market or offered globally.

Details about the final model are scarce, but given that the 2024 GT-R received significant visual updates just 12 months ago, including new front and rear fascias, major upgrades for the 2025 version seem unlikely. Perhaps there will be some minor aerodynamic tweaks or adjustments to the trim levels, but a complete overhaul seems improbable, especially for a model that will be discontinued after producing just 1,500 units.

Also Read : Lamborghini Huracan joins hands with Nissan GTR to challenge F1 racecar

If the reports are accurate and 2025 indeed marks the final year of the R35 GT-R, enthusiasts can expect some commemorative touches to the sports model, such as special badges or decals. Mechanically, the regular variant is likely to retain the same 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 engine found in the 2024 model, with 565 bhp and 632 Nm of torque. The GT-R Nismo variant could see a boost to 600 hp and 481 lb-ft (651 Nm) of torque.

When the GT-R first hit the market, it sent shockwaves through the supercar world, much like the original Honda NSX did in its time. It was one of the fastest production vehicles on the planet, capable of outpacing cars that cost significantly more. However, over the past 17 years, the supercar landscape has evolved, with lighter and more powerful competitors entering the market, outperforming the GT-R with ease.

While the 2025 GT-R may be the final chapter for the R35 generation, Nissan is likely to introduce a replacement in the near future. The form of the R36 model, however, remains a mystery. At the recent Japan Mobility Show 2023, Nissan teased the future with the Hyper Force concept, a GT-R-inspired model powered by electric motors capable of producing a staggering 1,341 bhp. This glimpse into the future suggests that the GT-R’s legacy of performance and innovation is far from over.

The new-gen Ford Endeavour and Ranger were spied on at the Chennai port recently, fuelling rumours of the American automaker’s return (Instagram/Weguide.auto)

The chatter around Ford’s return to the Indian market doesn’t seem to dying down. While the automaker is yet to officially make any announcement, rumours are rife that the American auto giant is planning for a comeback in 2025 and will start its new innings with the Endeavour (Everest in other markets) and Ranger models. Both models were recently spotted completely undisguised in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and now more images of the SUV and pickup have emerged online, showing its interior.

The images appear to be from the Chennai port where the Ford Endeavour and Ranger seemingly landed before they were ferried to the company’s facility on flat-bed trucks. Both the new Endeavour and Ranger seen in the spy shots are right-hand drive models. While the Endeavour was a Ford staple, the Ranger never went on sale in India. That said, with the market maturing and the arrival of models like the Isuzu V-Cross and Toyota Hilux, Ford could consider bringing the pick-up this time.

Also Read : Endeavour to Mach-E: 5 Ford cars we would like to see in India

The spy images offer a glimpse at the interior of both offerings. The cabin gets soft-touch plastics, leather upholstered seats, a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital instrument console, electrically adjustable front seats, ADAS and more. The features are available on the international version and it is likely that most of these features will be available on the India-spec model.

The new Ford Endeavour and Ranger are based on the T6 ladder-on-frame construction. Engine options will include the 2.0-litre diesel with a single turbo producing 180 bhp and 420 Nm, while the twin-turbo version churns out 210 bhp and 500 Nm. Expect to see the SUV and pick-up available with manual and automatic transmission choices.

It needs to be seen if Ford opts to bring the utility vehicles as Completely Knocked Down (CKD) or fully built units. The Endeavour’s return will bring back the age-old rivalry with the Toyota Fortuner, while also taking on the MG Gloster and Isuzu MU-X. That said, we still await an official announcement from the automaker.

Recently, a new-gen Endeavour was spotted in Chennai but it was not alone. There was another flatbed truck right behind the Endeavour that was carrying a Ford Ranger which is the smallest pick-up truck in the manufacturer’s lineup. Ford Ranger shares its underpinnings with the Endeavour which is sold as Everest in the global market. As of now, it is not clear what the Everest and Ranger are doing in Chennai. What is interesting though is the fact that Ford India’s plant is on the outskirts of Chennai so there is a possibility that both vehicles are headed towards the plant.

Pick-up trucks are very popular in the global market but not everyone wants such a large vehicle on a daily basis. This is where the idea of small pick-up trucks was generated. In the global market, there are a few small pick-up trucks such as Volkswagen Amarok and Ford Ranger and now Kia has announced that they are also bringing a pickup truck soon.

In the global market, the Ford Ranger is offered with three engine options. There is a 2.3-litre EcoBoost, 2.7-litre EcoBoost and a 3.0-litre EcoBoost. The 2.3-litre unit puts out 266 bhp of max power and 420 Nm of peak torque. Then there is the 3.0-litre unit that is rated for 399 bhp and 583 Nm. As of now, the 2.7-litre engine has not gone on sale. Ford says that they are targeting power and torque figures of 310 bhp and 542 Nm.

In India, we have the Toyota Hilux and the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross but the Ford Ranger is expected to cost more if it is launched here.

Car interiors evolving into living rooms

Modern car interiors are increasingly becoming more digitalised and smart, connected and feature-packed, essentially becoming an extension of the cons

Modern car interiors are increasingly becoming more digitalised and smart, connected feature-packed, essentially becoming an extension of the consumers’ living room.

A decade ago, visitors to an auto show would have seen cars with dashboards loaded with dials, knobs and mechanical buttons. Interactive engagement between the occupants and the car’s onboard system was still a futuristic idea. However, a decade later, the situation has gone through a massive evolution. Human-machine interfaces (HMI) are now taking over the car interiors with the auto OEMs implementing smart digital interfaces built on advanced technology platforms. This gradual and drastic transformation from mechanical to electronic HMI controls promises to revolutionize the driving experience of drivers and vehicle users.

The mechanical interfaces in passenger vehicles are increasingly being replaced by voice controls, touch-sensitive panels, digital surfaces, wireless communications etc. With the advent of advanced technology-aided features that are focused on the convenience and comfort of the driver as well as driving safety, technologies such as windshields being used as heads-up displays, showing traffic updates, weather reports and other information may become a reality shortly. Overall, the HMI capabilities in modern cars are growing increasingly sophisticated, propelling massive growth in the segment of the in-car electronics market.

A living room on wheels

Modern consumers are engrossed with the convenience of smart devices and the internet of things, which have become ubiquitous. While the consumers enjoy the convenience and advantage of such devices, they expect the same experience in their cars. OEMs too are increasingly focusing on providing the same to their car buyers. This is a key reason behind the rapid growth of connected cars and so many in-car features.

In an attempt to meet the market and consumer expectations as well as to remain competitive, car manufacturers have started connecting cars to the internet and providing smart user interfaces in these vehicles like those available on consumers’ smart devices, in their homes and at work. This strategy ensures seamless connectivity across the consumers’ devices irrespective of the place. In a nutshell, a car interior is increasingly becoming an extension of a vehicle owner’s living room or office.

The rapid growth of capacitive user interfaces including touchscreen that can be customised for various functions like infotainment, navigation and comfort settings, instead of the traditional mechanical knobs and buttons simply testify to this shift of consumer focus.

Flexibility of design

The growth of use in capacitive user interfaces has brought a revolution in car interior design as well, ensuring maximum physical comfort through ergonomic layout. This strategy is resulting in the contemporary cars’ interiors becoming sleek with cutting-edge aesthetics, even in the lower price categories.

The use of digitalized and sleeker HMI is maximising not only physical comfort for the vehicle occupants but offering greater design flexibility to the manufacturers as well. Modern cars are increasingly focusing on spacious interiors to ensure better creature comfort, while at the same time offering enriched experiences with features such as wireless communication, superior lighting and sound systems, internet or cloud connectivity etc.

The Aurus Senat Limousine was built for Russian President Vladimir Putin and the car was recently gifted to North Korea’s supreme leader Kim Jong Un

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently gifted a new car to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in a show of friendship between the two state leaders. The luxury limousine ‘Aurus Senat’ has been the talk of the town not for the gift itself but for violating the UN sanctions against Pyongyang. The UN sanctions ban the supply, sale and transfer of luxury goods, including cars, to North Korea. So, what is the Aurus Senat that’s caught in the eye of the storm? We break it down for you.

The Aurus Senat Limousine is Vladimir Putin’s official vehicle and the car is the first Russian luxury vehicle developed in the country. The Aurus Senat made its global debut in 2018 and was originally custom-made for the Russian president under the codename ‘Cortege’.

The Aurus Senat Limousine is the presidential state car while the shorter five-door sedan is also available for civilian purchase. Visually, the Senat borrows several cues from the Rolls-Royce Phantom luxury saloon, even as the company says its retro styling is inspired by the ZIS-110 Soviet limousine of the 1940s.

The Aurus Senat is sizeable at 5,631 mm in length and weighs a hefty 2,700 kg. President Putin’s stretched limousine measures 6,700 mm and also gets armoured protection. This includes bulletproof armour, reinforced glass, bomb-resistant underfloor protection, run-flat rubber tyres, as well as integrated “offensive” weapons and a self-contained oxygen supply. The presidential state car also gets its secure-line communication system.

The Aurus Senat’s cabin gets individually adjustable rear seats with entertainment screens for each passenger. The presidential vehicle is completely armoured as well

The cabin remains opulent on the Senat with the best of leather and finer materials gracing the cabin. The model gets dual instrument pods with a large TFT display in the centre and a large infotainment system slotted into the centre console. The rear seats get their respective screens, along with individually adjustable rear seats.

On the power front, the Senat stretched limousine gets a 6.6-litre V12 engine with about 850 bhp on offer, whereas the long-wheelbase saloon is powered by a 4.4-litre V8 developed by NAMI or the Central Scientific Research Automobile and Automotive Engines Institute in Russia. The motor is said to have been developed with inputs from Porsche Engineering and is tuned to produce 590 bhp and 880 Nm of peak torque.

The Aurus Senat joins Kim Jong Un’s fleet of luxury cars that includes Maybachs, Lexus, a Mercedes Pullman Guard and more

Kim Jong Un isn’t new to luxury cars and reportedly has a long line of opulent vehicles at his disposal. Reports suggest the leader has at least two Maybach 62s, a Mercedes-Maybach S650, a Lexus LX, a Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600, and a Mercedes Pullman Guard. The new Aurus Senat is now an addition to this list.

India’s passenger vehicle industry to see less than 5% growth in FY25, says Tata

India’s passenger vehicle industry to see less than 5% growth in FY25, says Tata

  • Tata Motors’ key official Shailesh Chandra has hinted at impending price hikes for passenger vehicles in the coming months.
Tata Motors’ key official Shailesh Chandra has hinted at impending price hikes for passenger vehicles in the coming months.

Despite the rapidly rising demand for personal mobility and SUV-mania across the country, India’s passenger vehicle segment is likely to see less than five per cent growth in the next financial year, forecasted Tata Motors. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Managing Director Shailesh Chandra stated that India’s domestic passenger vehicle industry is likely to see moderate to less growth in the next fiscal starting in April 2024. However, the Tata Motors official believes electric vehicle sales in the country will grow despite the slow pace of EV charging infrastructure development.

Passenger vehicles to see sluggish growth

Chandra said that in FY23, the industry witnessed 25 per cent growth in the passenger vehicle segment, which is expected to become moderate in this financial year to about eight per cent. The Tata Motors official said that the industry is currently witnessing a high base effect and in the next financial year, there will be be slightly challenging situation for the segment. This challenging situation would result in the industry recording less than a five per cent growth rate in the next financial year, claimed Chandra during an analyst call.

Watch: 2023 Tata Safari review: Family SUV with bachelor spirit?

Passenger vehicles likely to be pricier

In the last few months, automakers in India have announced price hikes for their respective passenger vehicle models citing increasing production costs due to factors such as surging raw material costs, inflation etc. Chandra hinted that there would be more such price hikes in the next financial year, which would pose challenges to the growth of passenger vehicles.

Citing various challenges for the growth of passenger vehicles in India, Chandra noted that while commodity prices have been stable in the past quarter or so, there is a risk that prices may go up going forward. He hinted that costs of crucial raw materials are going up, which may impact the prices of passenger vehicles negatively in the coming months.

Electric vehicles to continue growing

Tata Motors is spearheading the democratisation of electric vehicles in India’s passenger vehicles segment. The homegrown OEM is leading the Indian electric car segment with more than 80 per cent market share. In the last few years, the segment has witnessed rapid growth thanks to various factors such as rising costs of petrol and diesel, narrowing price gap between electric and fossil fuel vehicles, availability of various government subsidies and incentives for EVs, tightening emission norms, growing awareness about environmental pollution and vehicular emissions’ impact on that, the launch of new electric cars etc. Tata Motors believes this growth momentum will continue in the next financial year as well.

Chandra said that in 2023, while the overall passenger vehicle industry grew eight per cent on a year-on-year basis compared to 2022, electric vehicle sales surged by 95-100 per cent YoY compared to the previous year. “I think this trend is likely to continue. So companies with stronger portfolios in CNG and EVs will grow,” Chandra said.

Watch: Tata Altroz iCNG: First Drive Review

Interestingly, this growth projection comes despite the sluggish pace of growth for the electric vehicle charging infrastructure, which is considered a key factor for the growth of electric vehicle sales. “As far as EVs are concerned, I think the biggest challenge here is the pace at which the charging infra is growing. It is lagging behind the pace at which the EV adoption is happening,” Chandra noted further adding, “Given that the charging infra is crucial to the growth and expansion of EV market, we have gone for an open collaboration approach with all charge point operators as well as the oil marketing companies who are focusing on expansion of charging infra.”

Ford EcoSport 1.0-litre EcoBoost variants recalled in the US

  • The recall affects 137,790 units of the 2018-2022 Ford EcoSport and 2016-2018 Focus models with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbo petrol engine.
The recall affects the 2018-2022 Ford EcoSport and 2016-2018 Focus models powered by the 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbo petrol engine

Ford has issued a voluntary recall for the EcoSport subcompact SUV in the US, as per the documents filed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall affects 137,790 units of the 2018-2022 Ford EcoSport and 2016-2018 Focus models with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbo petrol engine. The NHTSA stated that the affected vehicles suffered from oil pressure issues due to a defective oil pump drive belt tensioner arm.

The issue is specific to the 1.0-litre EcoBoost variants of the Ford EcoSport and Focus models where the engine was paired with the 6F15 automatic transmission. The documents state that the belt tensioner arm may fracture because the retention caulk joint wasn’t robust enough to stand engine vibrations. This could end up with the tensioner separating from the backing plate and lead to the belt being degraded by loose teeth.

Also Read : Ford India rolls out last car from Chennai plant, a while EcoSport

The loose belt would then cause the loss of oil pressure, potentially causing damage and seizing the engine. The issue could lead to a loss in engine and braking power, and Ford said that it was aware of a crash due to this issue, which ended up injuring two people. Nevertheless, no fatalities were reported.

2018 Ford EcoSport Interior
The Ford EcoSport was discontinued in India and the US by mid-2022, soon after the automaker’s announced plans to end manufacturing in India

The recall is a part of the investigation by the NHTSA on about 250,000 EcoSports after reports of engine failure emerged in the 2018-2021 models. The EcoBoost engines were under the NHTSA’s scrutiny after 2022 when the US agency began investigations related to the Bronco in the US. About 700,000 Ford and Lincoln models were affected by the investigation powered by the 2.7-litre and 3.0-litre EcoBoost engines.

At the moment, it’s unclear whether the issue is specific to the US-spec EcoSport or if it includes the India-spec models as well. We have reached out to Ford India seeking a statement and will update this piece as and when the company responds.

The Ford EcoSport was discontinued in India and the US by mid-2022 after the automaker decided to cease manufacturing in India. In related news, Ford has been contemplating its return to the country, which is said to be one of the reasons why the Tamil Nadu plant has not been sold yet. Ford’s Sanand facility was sold to Tata Motors last year. The company recently trademarked the new-generation Endeavour in India hinting at the SUV’s return, which could be a second inning for the American automaker.
