This change towards EV reflects changes in people's mindset and more and more people are choosing clean mobility solutions instead of diesel, which is considered harmful to the environment.

Diesel pollution
Diesel fuel consists of 24 carcinogenic agents and therefore, it has long been contributed to people's health and increase air pollution. According to Kolkata government data, the sale of electric vehicles increased from 3,628 units in 2023 to 5,925 units in 2024. In 2022, this number in Kolkata was less than half of 2,197 units. Diesel vehicle registration declined from 5,994 units to 5,897 units in 2023. However, with the sale of 75,862 units last year, petrol -powered cars remained the top priority of customers.

Government gives tax exemption
One of the most important reasons behind the growth in EV's sale was a subsidy from the West Bengal State Government, including registration charge, road tax and exemption on the purchase of electric two-wheelers and four-wheeler models.

Diesel or petrol? Which car will be more saving on buying, understand the complete mathematics of savings

A lot of savings can be done in a diesel car in the year compared to petrol car.

Highlights

  • Diesel cars can save more than petrol cars.
  • A diesel car can save Rs 23,400 annually at 30 km/day.
  • If the price of diesel is 90 and petrol is Rs 100 per liter.

New Delhi. India is a price sensitive market and this is the reason that there is a large number of customers who prefer to take vehicles with diesel powertrain instead of petrol. The big reason for this is savings. Customers want them to save well in fuel cost in long run. If you are also confused that which of both diesel or petrol is better for you, then today we remove your confusion.

We will do a calculation in this article with a 30 -km daily running, on the basis of which you can do a later personalized calculation based on the needs of daily running.

Suppose a diesel car gives a mileage of 20 km/liter and a petrol car gives a mileage of 15 km/liter.

Diesel car (20 km/liter): 30 km/day ÷ 20 km/liter = 1.5 liters/day
Petrol car (15 km/liter): 30 km/day ÷ 15 km/liter = 2 liters/day
Diesel Car: 1.5 x 30 = 45 liters
Petrol Car: 2 x 30 = 60 liters

Annual fuel cost
Diesel Car: 45 x 12 = 540 liters
Petrol Car: 60 x 12 = 720 liters

Fuel cost calculation
Suppose the price of diesel is Rs 90 per liter and the price of petrol is Rs 100 per liter (approx).

Annual fuel cost
Diesel Car: 540 x 90 = 48,600 rupees
Petrol Car: 720 x 100 = 72,000 rupees

Savings in a year on diesel compared to petrol car: Rs 72,000 – Rs 48,600 = Rs 23,400
