Hyundai Creta EV has been in discussions among Indian electric vehicle enthusiasts even before the updated version of the mid-size SUV entered the market in January this year. Now, the Creta EV has been spotted in the wild in South Korea in a fresh spy shot image. A fully camouflaged test mule of the Hyundai Creta EV has been spied, giving us a clue about the possible design elements of the electric SUV.

The latest spy shot of the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV shows the SUV gets an identical LED daytime running light (DRL) spanning the entire width of the front profile. Also, it looks like the car will have similar styling elements including LED projector headlamps as the ICE variant of the Creta, which is currently on sale in India. However, being an electric car, it would feature a closed panel instead of a conventional radiator grille visible in the newly launched Creta facelift. The spyshot also reveals the electric Creta gets 17-inch aero-designed alloy wheels, which is specifically meant for the EV and comes as the most distinctive change compared to the ICE variant.

Watch: Hyundai Creta facelift review: Major step-up for the SUV king

The Hyundai Creta EV is expected to come with repositioned brand log, front-fender mounted charging port. Also, there will be a smoothened bumper with tweaked radiator grille. Expect the electric SUV to feature design tweaks at side and rear profile as well.

Speaking about features, the Hyundai Creta EV is expected to come equipped with a large touchscreen infotainment system with EV-based user interface, an all-digital instrument cluster with new graphics, revamped centre console. Also, there would be a 360 degree surround camera and Level 2 ADAS suite. The front camera is visible at the centre of the nose section at front profile.

The South Korean automaker is tightlipped about the specifications of the upcoming electric car. However, expect it to come offering about 450 kilometre range on a single charge thanks to 55-60 kWh battery pack.

Renault Duster’s base variant may ditch touchscreen. Here’s reason to think so

[ad_1]

The base variant of Dacia Duster SUV, which has influenced the upcoming new generation Renault Duster, has ditched the touchscreen infotainment system

Dacia Duster
The base variant of the Dacia Duster SUV, which has influenced the upcoming new generation Renault Duster, has ditched the touchscreen infotainment system.

Before the launch of the Renault Kwid, the Renault Duster SUV remained one of the most successful cars from the French auto giant in the Indian market. Now, the car manufacturer is aiming to bring back the SUV to India again in late 2024. Renault has already unveiled the SUV a few months back. Based on the previously unveiled Dacia Duster, the new generation Renault Duster looks bolder than the model used to be sold in India.

Now, a new image has surfaced revealing the interior of the Dacia Duster’s base variant, which possibly previews the interior of the upcoming Renault Duster’s base variant as well. As it appears, the base variant of the SUV would miss out on a touchscreen infotainment system. However, there is a panel where the consumers can install a touchscreen infotainment unit from aftermarket. Overall, the base variant of the Renault SUV may look spartan in terms of distal interfaces.

Watch: 2024 Renault Duster breaks cover with bolder design, new engine

Speaking of the styling and features, the three-spoke multifunction steering wheel would come featuring a new and chunky look. The steering may come similar to the Dacia Duster one and sport a flat vibe at the top and bottom, while it would carry a plethora of control buttons. While the base variant may miss out on the touchscreen infotainment system, it would come with a fully digital instrument cluster. Among other features on the dashboard, there would be sharp-looking AC vents with horizontal slats and rotary dials for climate control functions at the centre console.

Interestingly, the rise of touch-sensitive digital interfaces and capacitive touchpad screens in modern cars has become a safety concern. The drivers tend to take their eyes off the road to navigate through the menus on the touchscreen to access various features. This is a major issue the Euro NCAP has recently highlighted. Hence, the safety rating agency has stated that from 2026, it will penalize automakers by lowering the safety rating of a car that doesn’t have physical control buttons for certain functions.

While the entry-level variants of many cars often come sans any touchscreen infotainment systems, in the last few years, even affordable small cars come with such units. The upcoming Renault Duster will not come as an affordable model. Instead, it would be positioned above the Kiger as an upmarket SUV. Hence it would be interesting to see if Renault India introduces the touchscreen infotainment system in the base variant of the car or continues with the spartan look visible in the Dacia Duster’s base variant.

2025 Nissan GT-R announced for Japan, could be the last edition of the supercar

[ad_1]

  • The 2025 Nissan GT-R has been revealed for Japanese markets and while not officially confirmed, this could be the last production model of the GT-R.
2025 Nissan GT-R
The 2025 Nissan GT-R could be driving into the sunset marking the end of an era

The Nissan GT-R is every bit of a cult and the longest of the modern era of supercars to stay in production. However, it now seems Nissan is ready to draw the curtains on its halo offering. The company has revealed the 2025 GT-R for Japanese markets and while it’s not officially confirmed, this could be the last production model of the GT-R.

The 2025 Nissan GT-R arrives with minimal changes. The car gains a new Blue Heaven interior upholstery, while there’s a new T-Spec and Track Edition engineered by the brand’s performance division NISMO. Upgrades include new weight-balanced piston rings, connecting rods, and crankshafts. The Track Edition also gets aluminium certification plates and gold-coloured number plates in the engine bay.

Furthermore, Nissan says the 2025 GT-R will be sold in limited numbers although it does not suggest the number of units that will be sold. Another report suggests that the automaker has capped production to 1,500 units for the supercar.

Fondly called the Godzilla, the 2025 GT-R could be the last time we see the model roll off the production line. The R25 GT-R entered production in December 2007, although development started back in 2000. The automaker released two concepts, one in 2001 at the Tokyo Motor Show and the GT-R Proto at the same event in 2005.

The Nissan GT-R is a supercar icon and could come back as an all-electric offering

We hope Nissan gives the GT-R a bigger and brighter send-off to the icon that has been an integral part of the automotive culture globally. Meanwhile, Nissan is said to be working on an all-electric GT-R that could arrive by the end of this decade. The automaker also showcased the Hyper Force concept at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show hinting at the same.

Opinion: Highway speed limits need rethinking

[ad_1]

Low speed limits on a 6-lane road result in dangerous braking in front of speed cameras.

I write this column as someone who has evolved into a very sedate driver over the years. Don’t get me wrong, I have my fun on bikes in the right environment, but I find much more joy in driving to a destination as efficiently as possible rather than as fast as possible. I suppose it also helps that my personal car is a twenty-year-old Maruti Zen. It’s a car whose ability to transport you to a simpler time is something I adore, and it also doesn’t feel very comfortable above 100kph.

With that foundation laid in place, it’s time to get to the point of this column. Some of our speed limits are ridiculous to the point of being downright dangerous. A prime example would be what’s happening on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. A few years ago, the speed limit was raised from 80kph to 100kph and I think that number nicely balances the capability of our modern cars along with the driving skills of the average Indian road user.

However, this speed limit only applies to the straight stretches and the problem begins when you get to the ghat section between Khopoli and Lonavala. Here, the speed limit is immediately halved to 50kph, which is simply way too slow for a road that remains a very wide and flowing six-lane expressway throughout.

How do we know that this is far too slow? Well, the authorities have now erected plenty of new overhead gantries with speed cameras, and I’ve noticed that almost nobody – not even most commercial vehicles – are going that slowly, especially downhill. People either drive past with oblivion or suddenly and dangerously brake to avoid the fine.

Things get even worse when you’re on the elevated section over Lonavala where there’s a 30kph speed limit board that is soon followed by a row of new cameras. To put it into context, how absurd is this on a six-lane ‘expressway’,  an above-average athlete can run faster than that.

Having recently been stung by a Rs 2,000 fine for doing a very sedate 64kph on the expressway ghat, I tried slowing down to 30kph for this board and had to completely get off the road to do so without possibly causing a pile-up.

I really wonder how this hasn’t already been corrected. Do the authorities who set these speeds actually drive on these roads? Or have all these new speed cameras been intentionally placed right next to unrealistic speed limit boards? Either way, something has to change.

For bikes, things get worse, with painfully low speed limits on many state and national highways, and a growing number of strategically parked speed interceptor vehicles waiting to catch you out.

Speed limits are important and the steep fines associated with them do a good job of keeping reckless driving under control. But at the same time, more thought and science needs to go into the design of these limits, especially when tens of thousands of crores of taxpayer money is being put into road infrastructure development.

The very point of making great roads is to facilitate more efficient traffic movement, which will lead to a more efficient economy. Doesn’t it completely defeat the purpose if we are going to then artificially slow the traffic down again?

Skoda Epiq breaks cover as the brand’s most accessible EV

[ad_1]

The Skoda Epiq derives its name from the word epiq and is about 4.1 metres long, making it a tad shorter than the Skoda Kushaq, promising a range of 4

2025 Skoda Epiq Concept
The Skoda Epiq concept will enter production in 2025 and will be priced around 25,000 Euros (approx ₹23 lakh) in Europe

Skoda Auto has taken the wraps off its most accessible electric offering. The new Skoda Epiq electric SUV arrives as a design study with the final version to arrive in 2025. The Epiq derives its name from the word ‘epiq’ and is about 4.1 metres long, making it a tad shorter than the Skoda Kushaq, while promising a range of 400 km on a single charge. Prices in Europe will be around 25,000 Euros (approx. 23 lakh) in the European market.

The Skoda Epiq shares its underpinnings with the Volkswagen ID.2. The exterior adopts the Modern Solid design language, which the company says incorporates smart functionality and practicality together. The front gets the new Tech-Deck Face, which Skoda says is a modern interpretation of the brand’s radiator grille with the gloss black surface hiding the camera and adaptive cruise control radar.

The bumper features massive vertical slats, which reminds us of the iconic grille on Jeep SUVs. The shoulder line offers a bold and flat design at the side that adds to the rugged feel of the Skoda Epiq. Add to that the flared wheel arches and the T-shaped LED taillights at the rear.

The model gets a two-spoke steering wheel, a 5.3-inch Virtual Cockpit and a 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The dashboard features simpler lines with a gloss-black finish running across. Maruti Fronx on road price, Toyota Taisor, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor

Maruti Fronx on road price

[ad_1]

Urban Cruiser Taisor will be the smallest SUV in Toyota’s India line-up.

Toyota’s rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Fronx has been anticipated for long, and the company has now officially confirmed its debut on April 3. In August 2023, Toyota trademarked the “Urban Cruiser Taisor’ nameplate in India, which is what we expect the rebadged Fronx will be called. As is the case with the existing shared models between both brands, we expect some cosmetic differences inside out, although it will remain identical under the skin.

  1. New compact car is expected to be named Urban Cruiser Taisor
  2. Will be based on the Maruti Suzuki Fronx
  3. Updates will only be cosmetic in nature

Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor: new exterior and interior

The updates on the rebadged Fronx can be expected to be on lines of the BalenoGlanza as the Fronx itself is based on the Baleno. One can expect an all-new bumper with revised headlamp clusters, new LED daytime running lamp signatures, new alloys wheels, new tail-lamps along with a revised rear bumper. There will be no sheet metal changes – the differences are only going to be on the soft plastic parts.

On the inside, the dashboard will be identical to the Fronx, but it’s expected to come finished in new colours and trim materials. The seats are also expected to get new upholstery. And while the equipment list on top-spec models will be identical, from the pattern seen on existing shared models, Toyota is likely to offer the rebadged Fronx in fewer trims. Toyota will also offer better standard warranty to bring about some more differentiation.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor: powertrain options

The Fronx has two engines on offer – a 1.0-litre BoosterJet unit that makes 100hp and 147Nm, and a 90hp, 113Nm naturally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engine, with a 5-speed manual as standard. As for automatics, the turbo-petrol gets a 6-speed torque converter automatic while the petrol gets a 5-speed AMT.

It’s certain that the 1.2-litre petrol engine will be carried over to the Taisor – over 80 percent of Fronx buyers opt for this engine – but it remains to be seen if the Boosterjet is carried over as well (for instance, the Invicto doesn’t carry over the regular petrol engine from the Hycross).

If it does, then it will be the first turbo-petrol motor in Toyota’s line-up that’s primarily dominated by hybrids and diesels. The Fronx is also available with a CNG powertrain option and this should carry over to the Toyota derivative as well.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor: rivals and launch

The Urban Cruiser Taisor will mark Toyota’s return to the sub-4m SUV space after the Brezza-based Urban Cruiser was discontinued in late-2022, albeit in a new coupe-SUV guise. Apart from the Fronx, it will rival other compact SUV such as the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300, Maruti Suzuki Brezza and more. In terms of price, expect a marginal premium over a corresponding Fronx.

Kia Seltos, Kia Clavis India launch, Kia Sonet, new Kia SUV

Kia Clavis India launch

[ad_1]

Upcoming Kia Clavis is a sub-4-metre lifestyle SUV that will be available with petrol and electric powertrains.

Kia is set to introduce another sub-4-metre SUV despite having the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Hyundai Venue-rivaling Sonet. After a few test mules were caught testing on foreign soil, the upcoming Kia Clavis SUV has now been spotted testing in India for the first time.

  1. Kia Clavis SUV to be positioned between Sonet and Seltos
  2. To be a lifestyle offering, albeit without an AWD option
  3. Clavis petrol to debut by the end of this year, launch early 2025

Kia Clavis design highlights

While the test mule is fully camouflaged, the boxy shape of the SUV is evident. The SUV boasts of a flat roofline with functional roof rails, while the bonnet, nose and the rear-end are also upright and flattish. The diamond-cut alloy wheels seem to have taken inspiration from the facelifted fourth-gen Kia Carnival MPV. The Clavis will be a sub-4-metre SUV, but its upright styling would result in better headroom compared to the Sonet. Bigger windows would also contribute to the cabin feeling airier. Essentially, it will be more lifestyle-oriented that the Sonet which is quite urban.

Kia Clavis powertrain options

As we’ve reported earlier, the Clavis will be offered with both petrol and electric powertrains. Both versions will be based on the same platform and a hybrid powertrain could also be introduced at a later stage. However, all versions will feature a front-wheel drive configuration as standard, with specific details about the powertrains available closer to its debut.

Kia Clavis launch timeline

The petrol-powered Kia Clavis SUV is expected to be unveiled in India by the end of this year, followed by a launch in early 2025. The battery-powered version of the Clavis is expected to arrive about six months later. Considering its market positioning, the Kia Clavis will be slightly pricier than the Sonet, which is currently priced at Rs 7.99 lakh.

The design language remains unchanged on the 2024 Atto 3 but there are cosmetic and feature changes including a new infotainment system.

The 2024 BYD Atto 3 now comes with a new Cosmos Black colour option that brings a more premium look to the SUV. The model also gets a new gloss black finish on the chrome window surrounds, while the D-pillar insert is also finished in gloss black. The Build Your Dreams badge on the tailgate has been shortened to just the ‘BYD’ logo. The electric offering also gets new 18-inch alloy wheels that now get wider 235/50 R18, as opposed to 215/55 R18 tyres. The changes were made after customers in international markets reported a subpar grip from the rubber.

The cabin layout remains the same but the big update on the 2024 Atto 3 is the new infotainment screen. The model uses a larger 15.6-inch touchscreen system from the new Seal EV, as against the 12.8-inch unit on the current model. The screen continues to get the rotating feature enabling it in landscape and portrait modes. The cabin also features a new dark blue and black colour scheme, which exudes a fresh look to the interior.

BYD has also introduced software updates including the new ‘Intelligent Start’ system that allows the driver to start the car by pressing the brake pedal. The new infotainment unit also comes with Amazon Music support, a web browser, a karaoke function and a BYD app store. Other upgrades include a thicker sunroof shade, expanded voice recognition software, quieter navigation and proximity alarm alerts, as well as a new anti-theft alarm sound. The interior ambient lighting is also linked to Spotify songs being played.

The Build Your Dreams badge on the tailgate has been replaced by the simpler BYD logo on the 2024 Atto 3

There are no mechanical changes to the Atto 3. The electric offering continues to be underpinned by the e-Platform 3.0 with a 49.9 kWh blade battery that promises 345 km on a single charge. The electric motor is good for 201 bhp and 310 Nm of peak torque. A larger 60.5 kWh battery pack also powers the SUV with a claimed range of 420 (WLTP) on a single charge in international markets, while the India-spec version offers a range of 521 km (ARAI-certified).

BYD Atto 3, Atto 3 price, mid-lifecycle updates, new colours, interior and features

[ad_1]

Atto 3 borrows its larger touchscreen from Seal EV; no mechanical changes.

BYD has rolled out a mid-lifecycle update for the Atto 3 electric SUV overseas, and the updates include new paint options and an updated infotainment screen with more features. However, it remains mechanically unchanged. The BYD Atto 3 is the company’s highest selling EV in several markets, including India.

  1. Atto 3 gets larger touchscreen from the Seal EV
  2. Exterior gets a new all-black paint option
  3. Remains mechanically unchanged

BYD Atto 3 exterior and interior: what’s new?

There aren’t any cosmetic changes on the outside, but the Atto 3 gets a new ‘Cosmos Black’ exterior colour shade. The chrome window surround and the silver textured D-pillar trim have also been blacked-out. Furthermore, the alloy wheels have a slightly updated design and the ‘Build Your Dreams’ logo on the boot lid is now just spelt as BYD.

The more significant update is on the inside – the 12.3-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment has made way for a larger 15.6-inch unit that’s borrowed from the Seal EV. It also gets a new black-blue interior colour scheme that replaces the previous beige-blue colours. There, however, aren’t any cosmetic changes, but it does get a new ‘intelligent start’ system that allows the driver to start the car by just pressing the accelerator pedal.

BYD Atto 3 powertrain, specs and range

The Atto 3 is powered by a front-axle mounted electric motor that develops 201hp and 310Nm, allowing the Atto 3 to do the 0-100kph run in 7.3 seconds (claimed). It packs a 60.48kWh blade battery that has an ARAI-certified range of 521km. The Atto 3’s battery pack can be charged in around 10 hours using a 7kW Type 2 AC charger, while a 80kW fast charger takes around 50 minutes to go from 0-80 percent.

Given that the Atto 3 is already on sale in India, we expect the updated version to be available here pretty soon. BYD recently also launched the Seal EV as its third product in India.

Ather Rizta family electric scooter’s battery pack teased in new video

Car Guru

The teaser video shows the battery undergoing a 40-foot drop test to demonstrate the durability of the component that will power the upcoming Rizta f

Ather Rizta battery teaser
The Ather Rizta will be revealed on April 6 at the Ather Community Day (Instagram/Ather Energy)

Ather Energy will reveal the new Rizta electric scooter on April 6, 2024, at the Ather Community Day. Ahead of the debut, the company is slowly revealing little details about the upcoming offering in a bid to keep buyers excited. The latest teaser video has now dropped on Ather’s social media and shows the new battery pack on the Rizta.

The teaser video shows the battery undergoing a 40-foot drop test to demonstrate the durability of the component. The video ends with the battery pack successfully withstanding the impact at the end of the test. The company says that the drop test showcases the battery pack’s ability to withstand shocks when going over bad roads. That’s all the details the company has shared so far without giving out numbers on the capacity or range. The flat design though hints at the battery going under the floorboard, similar to the Ather 450X, which would ensure maximum space under the seat.

Also Read : Ather to reveal Halo smart accessory on April 6 alongside Rizta. What is it?

Details remain scarce but Ather has promised the biggest seat in the segment and under-seat storage for the Rizta family e-scooter. The company currently builds battery packs in the 2.9 kWh and 3.7 kWh capacities respectively. The former promises a range of 111 km, while the latter offers a range of 150 km (certified) on a single charge. It needs to be seen if the Rizta will get the same battery pack or if the company opt for something larger in the interest of a higher range.

The bigger battery pack will also increase the weight of the scooter, which will be another challenge for the company. Hence, it needs to be seen how the Rizta is engineered to accommodate the needs of the family scooter buyer. Complete details on the Rizta should be available early next month. Make sure to keep watching this space for all the action.

Porsche 911, Porsche 911 hybrid, India launch details

[ad_1]

Apart from hybrid tech, the Porsche 911 line-up will also get a major model update.

The Porsche 911 hybrid has been confirmed for a debut later this year, and this powertrain upgrade for the iconic 911 line-up is a part of a major model update that’s been two years in the making.

  1. Four new Porsche unveils in 2024
  2. Porsche 911 992.2-gen to get styling tweaks as well
  3. Porsche 911 has been in production for six decades now

Porsche 992.2-gen 911 coming this year

The ‘992.2’-generation Porsche 911 receives a host of mid-life revisions, including subtly altered exterior styling, a reworked interior and updated six-cylinder petrol engines. It is one of four new Porsche models arriving in 2024 – one of the German marque’s busiest years on record for new launches – alongside the new Panamera, Taycan and electric Macan.

The changes are intended to sustain the 911’s appeal through to 2027, when an all-new ninth-generation model will join the increasingly electrified Porsche line-up.

Porsche 992.2-gen 911 powertrain

The most significant change to the 911 in its sixth decade of production is the adoption of a unique petrol-electric hybrid system. Set to appear in a new four-wheel-drive model being revealed in the summer, it combines a tuned version of Porsche’s turbocharged six-cylinder engine with a specially designed electric motor housed within the front axle. The petrol engine provides drive to the rear wheels, while the electric motor drives the front wheels. A 48V integrated starter motor in the dual-clutch automatic gearbox will provide an electric boost and power ancillary components.

The new 400V system is claimed to generate its own energy reserves using the engine as a generator – in a function similar to that of a range-extender drivetrain – as well as via brake regeneration, negating the need for external charging.

Electric energy is stored in a specially developed lightweight lithium-ion battery. With an energy capacity well below the batteries used by Ferrari and Mercedes-AMG in their plug-in performance models, it has been configured specifically for rapid energy charge and discharge properties.

Secrecy surrounds the output of the new hybrid drivetrain, though Porsche is eventually expected to offer the new petrol-electric unit in a range of different performance levels. Both Turbo-E Hybrid and Turbo S E-Hybrid models have been mooted for introduction in line with the Cayenne and Panamera line-ups.

Before the eighth-generation 911 bows out later this decade, Porsche is also set to launch an 800hp-plus hybrid successor to the fearsome GT2 RS. A fully electric 911 is not immediately planned, and Porsche instead envisages them progressing into the future with electrified combustion engines in combination with new e-fuel derivatives to provide net-zero emissions.

Porsche 911 992.2: what else will be new?

Apart from the powertrain, the changes on the facelift include:

Enhanced cooling: To boost cooling for the front-mounted radiators and brakes, Porsche has given the new front bumper distinctive air ducts that house five vertical louvres on each side, in place of the three horizontal louvres of the existing model. It is most likely that they will incorporate some sort of active operation to better balance cooling and aerodynamic drag. There is also a larger central air duct book-ended by additional cooling channels on either side.

Revised headlamps: Instead of being housed within the top section of the bumper insert, the indicators are now integrated into the revised headlight assemblies that feature a new graphic design. As with the units used by the facelifted Cayenne, the new headlights are expected to offer HD matrix LED functionality with more than 32,000 pixels per unit and the capability of lighting up to 600 metres ahead.

Restyled rear end: The updated 911 receives new-look brake lights integrated into the top of a restyled rear bumper, and it also features inboard-mounted tailpipes within a revised diffuser.

Interior upgrades: The changes to the interior of the new 911 are more subtle. Prototypes use the existing dashboard architecture and other features, suggesting that most tweaks will involve software upgrades. Among the expected developments are new digital instrument graphics and the latest Porsche Communication Management system for infotainment functions.
